Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2017 Velo City Pizza is located in San Mateo, California. My little family of three was heading out for lunch and I turned to Yelp for help : ) Originally, we were going to try a spot in Half Moon Bay but when I saw my Yelp friend Hen's review on this place- I decided we should give it a try. My Yelp friend Hen is really spot on with his reviews of restaurants. We arrived a little before noon (on a Saturday) and there was no parking nearby on the street, so we parked a few blocks away from the main street and walked over. I could see how parking during peak hours would be challenging. It's located on a quaint street with other restaurants and shops. At first I thought Velo City Pizza was a play on the word: velocity, meaning the speed of something in a given direction. Actually, the name of the restaurant is named, 'Velo,' meaning bike in French because one of the co-owners and his wife are cyclists. The interior theme is cycling. The wall art here is very cool along with the seating stools that have bicycle peddles. The red pizza oven is gorgeous. You can watch the pizzas being made behind a clear partition. Upon entering we were greeted by the one of the owners Phil. He was very helpful in explaining the menu since it was our first time. In the upstairs area- they have paper plates, utensils, water and napkins. Our order was brought up to us. The pizza was served fresh and hot. The combo was fantastic, the ingredients were fresh and the crust was delicious and crispy. The one thing I didn't care for were the pepperonis - I found them to be too spicy. When it came to dessert time, my husband and son wanted to sit downstairs. The gelato pops were a perfect end to our meal . When we were about to leave I noticed cigarette from a passerby. The front of the pizza place is open- which allowed the icky cigarette smoke inside and a few flies (eww). One fly even made it up to the second level when we were having lunch earlier. I think the shop should have a screen or air curtain to prevent bugs from getting into the restaurant. The small wheel pizza at seven inches was perfect for our four year old. The 16 inch combo pizza was more than enough for my husband and I - so we had leftovers. The pizza is good tasting and I would recommend it to my family and friends. It would be awesome if they had a medium sized pizza that was around $15.00 - just having a small seven inch and a large 16 inch pizza just doesn't cut it so to speak, there needs to be a middle option : ) Good pizza and drinks but a tad on the pricy side. Oh man I really wanted to like this place because of the good reviews but this just didn't do it for me. When we first got our pizza it looked great. We got half Ricotta, Spinach, Mushrooms and Roasted Garlic and half Artichoke, Mushrooms, Spinach, Tomatoes and Black Olives Pizza ($32 for 16"). [1] For the ricotta half I really did like the ricotta. I could taste the herbiness and how fresh it was but the rest of the slice fell short. I wish they put on more ricotta. Two dopes of it on each slice is definitely not enough. The tomato sauce, I didn't feel like there was enough spices to it. If you look at the picture you can see the red sauce but not a whole lot of spices. Maybe that's how some people like it but not working for me. I love roasted garlic but could barely taste any essences of it. The worst part of the slice was that the bottom was little more burnt than I'm use to. I do like some char to my crust but it mine was a bit too much. [2] The artichoke half, tasted just like the other half of the pizza but instead of ricotta it had artichoke. From the picture you can tell it looks pretty much the same all around. We didn't notice it until we were more than halfway done but they forgot the black olives. Given my experience I don't know if I would really come back. I was pretty disappointed. I do like the decor especially upstairs with the unicycle looking stools but the pizza was not to my liking. read more

Located on 25th avenue in San Mateo, we ordered a few pizzas from Velo. We ordered a small #5 Artichoke, Mushrooms (sauteed), Spinach, Tomatoes, Black Olives (Moroccan) and a 16" Lamb (halal), Ricotta, Red Onions, Bell Peppers, Sun-Dried Tomatoes and a Salami, Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Ham with Artichokes. Their website was a little weird but its functional. Since their pizzas cook in 90 seconds, you need to indicate the time you will pickup so your pizza isnt cold. Our pizzas were ready 2 minutes early! Pickup was smooth and the pizzas were great. The crusts were thin and pizzas had lots of toppings. We would order from here again. read more

Cannot say enough GREAT things about PJ's Pizza (formerly Velo City). First PJ's has excellent customer service! When I was organizing a Sip and Paint charity fundraiser for my local nonprofit organization benefitting families affected by childhood cancer and was in need of a caterer, PJ's was quick to respond and was very enthusiastic about helping out and giving back to the community! We coordinated with the owner, Phil, who was extremely kind, professional, responsive and very generous with helping us out. We know that it is not an easy time for businesses, so we appreciate Phil, PJ's Pizza and their philanthropy in helping us serve the pediatric oncology population! Secondly, their pizzas are EXCELLENT. All of our guests and volunteers agreed and had a great time. The pizzas were so delicious and by the end of the event, they were all gone as they were a huge hit! I was born on the east coast so my daily food groups were vegetables, fruit, bread (wow we were wrong about that one) and pizza. I have not had pizza in a while so came to San Mateo to try this place. Parking is easy since its not in the insanity of B street on Friday night. Overall my wife and I left wanting more. We ordered a sausage, mushroom, pepper pizza. By the way they have vegan cheese which I had (yay for no lactose!) The ingredients were very fresh. However the pizza itself was soggy, which was weird considering the reviews. The outside of the crust was burnt all around. I noticed the outer edge of the crust was much thinner than the rest, thus burnt outside and soggy inside. Was about $45 with 2 drinks. Not my style but others may enjoy. read more

Really like this great new pizza spot in San Mateo on 25th. Skinny place and easy to miss, but definitely worth finding and really enjoyed our pizza tonight. Only options are personal pizza and basically a large pizza and only thin crust - great brick oven style pizza. One of the awesome things about this place is that their mozzarella and pizza sauce are both made in house as well as some of the other toppings including lamb. Had sausage and lamb on my pizza and it was absolutely delicious. The tomato sauce also has a deep Roma tomato like taste which is really great. And, the kids enjoyed it. I'll say again, I am not one to leave a great review unless it truly deserves it. First time visiting Velo City pizza. I was in town picking up a friend's relative from the airport and we wanted something to eat beforehand. Thank goodness I stumbled across this place! We walked in and I spoke to the proprietor and he gave us a rundown of the menu. Everything looked and sounded delicious. We chose the chicken pesto artichoke, and the "combo". The chicken pizza was fantastic! Light crispy crust, chicken was tasty, artichoke was sized just right to cover the whole pie, topped of with drizzled pesto that set everything off! The combo was very delicious as well. Sauce was amazing, toppings were fresh that overall made a great tasting pie. Even though the sauce was made to perfection, it was applied a little too heavy which overpowered the toppings a bit. The place was clean and welcoming. Great for take out or staying to grind. I had been craving pizza for a while and this hit the spot. It truly is an artisan pizza and I felt like I was eating a gourmet meal rather than "just" a pizza. My boyfriend and I shared a 16" with half #4 (Mushrooms, Spinach, Roasted Garlic, Ricotta) + tomatoes and half #7 (Salami, Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Ham). The whole thing was outstanding, especially the house-made ricotta (WOW) and salami. I wouldn't change a thing. One of the best quality pizzas I've ever had. I can't recall the last time I had a pizza where I was able to taste the flavor of like every single ingredient. I got the small wheel #2 Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Bell Peppers, Black Olives. The crust was perfect, not too thick or thin. It's so sad to find out the good reviews this pizza place have, do not go with my bad experience l had mostly for what l paid for the small pizza. Starting with the dough which should be soft and crunchy but this dough what's hard to chew and very thin, also the tomato sauce which l don't know what type was, had a weird smell and taste. Also the pizza was kind of burn. The cheese was not even melted as fresh mozzarella is. To me this pizza is not what l read in the reviews. This is the worst experience eating pizza from this place. As someone who has had a lot of pizza... I've been looking for somewhere as my regular spot since moving to the area. This pizza. Guys. This pizza. Made me feel like a kid again l. I have never been so pleasantly surprised by pizza in my life. Nothing "flashy" or "upscale" needed. Just quality quality quality in every aspect. I'll certainly say that it is unique. Phillip told me he makes the sauce fresh without sugar from his training in northern Italy . I also order a caesar salad, which he said he makes the caesar dressing fresh. Phillip build up my expectations. A little over 10 minutes later, I received my order. I parked in a shaded area, began. The pizza smelled great! The sauce tasted slow-cooked, with rich flavors. Probably the best pizza I've had in the bay area. I ordered online today. The website is simple and straightforward without any issues. The pizza is thin crust and so yummy. Not burnt, crispy, but soft on the inside. The tomato sauce was delicious. It's a very obvious difference compared to the bad pizza places I've had with jarred tomato sauce (yuck). Don't be fooled. It's hard to tell by the photos but if you're looking for an honest pie that isn't on their specialty list, look elsewhere. I can't comment on the specialty pizzas but this review is for a make your own order. Pizza dough tasted like a stale cracker, there was barely any cheese on the pie. Weirdest part was that the sauce was just lightly splattered on top. Unlike the other pics, they skimped on the toppings, olives were barely visible. Need any more convincing see pics attached. I think the only thing that constituted this as a pizza was the shape. Would give it 1 star but the staff was very nice, should of looked at the pizza in the box in before I walked out of the shop but I blindly trusted the Yelp star rating. read more

Y'all- I don't know. I'm sure it's usually ok and I don't post EVER. We got Velo Pizza last night via DoorDash and about 3am I got sooooo sick. I have never given birth but I assume without an Epidural it would be similar. There was nothing different about my day other than trying a new place & I never get sick. We made our own- basically their combo but swapped a few things. I have been very unstable stomach wise all day. Still haven't eaten. Is it a fluke? Possibly but my husband was also sick. By the 5,000th time today (the day after) was urgently on the way to the restroom, I asked my husband the exactly place we got food from. I never want to say it's definitely their issue. OMG. This place is amazing! I had an eye appointment. nearby, so I stopped afterwards to grab something to go. I opted for a 7" calzone with added mushrooms. This was literally the best calzone I've had in my life (and I'm originally from Pennsylvania, where amazing Italian food is abundant). The crust was actually thin, pliable (i.e. foldable, if you eat pizza like a New Yorker) and perfectly toasted. Most commercial calzones have thick, hard crust on the ends. Not this place. The sauce was perfectly spiced and FRESH pulled mozzarella inside? Heaven in my tummy. I had almost waked past this tiny place but am so glad I stopped. For all you know, the homemade crust, cooked to crispy perfection, is made from magical stardust. And the equally homespun sauce, thick and flavorful, from fairy souls. But I just don't know--not for certain, anyway--and therefore I'm not even going to insinuate that a single bite of this pizza, especially if you order it well-done, will trigger a chemical reaction inside you that grants everlasting life. Neither would I dare suggest that the owners are, in fact, Zeus and Hera, gods masquerading as simple mortals who just want to run the best damned pizza house on the peninsula. What is unequivocally true is that you need to sample this thin, crunchy pie, comprised of the highest quality ingredients and made with love in a traditional fire-burning oven. I've tested all the local pizza competitors and they aren't fit to lick Zeus's thunderbolt. Pro tip: Velo also makes really good Caesar salad with homemade dressing.
