I had the most amazing birthday dinner ever! It was a friday night and busy but not busy enough to get great service and amazing food. My girlfriend and I ordered the leeks tartine, calamari, caesar salad, mussels, pomme frittes, chocolate mousse and strawberry tart. We were going to order a main course but wanted to try most all of the side dishes. Sure glad we did! I actually had to order an additional chocolate mousse because my girlfriend only gave me a taste of the first one we ordered. The ambiance was perfect- great music, soft lighting and cool decor. Irina gave us great service and drinks, franck gave us a beautiful smile and James (one o the chefs) came out to say hello. This was my first time there and I will definitely be back! We feel this is one of the top restaurants of its type in the area. Despite an unprofessional review by the new Bee restaurant "critic" we suggest anyone searching for a great restaurant experience to try this. I'm partial to the lamb, our daughter the mussels, and we've never had anything that wasn't excellent. LOVED IT. Had one of the specials o' the day-- sea bass-- and it was excellent--crispy on outside and wonderfully moist and tender and flavorful on inside. Beautifully cooked piece of fish. We also had the mussels nantaise which were excellent, and surprisingly low priced. They seriously need to serve a spoon with the mussels for the nantaise sauce which was crawl-in-the-bowl-and-roll-around good. Veggies accompanying were excellent--local, fresh, in-season. And thumbs up for Fischer beer. Never had it before, will definitely have it again. Dessert was pears poached in red wine served with cheese. Again excellent. Service was attentive. Went for my birthday this year...delicious meal and worth the money. I had the usual....steak and cauliflower gratin, after an appetizer of mushroom crostini (just ok). Wife ordered gnocchi special but they brought out a prawn entree...quickly replaced with the gnocchi special but it was not fully cooked. Disappointing. Other than that incident, the food and service were almost great. I enjoy their vodka martini, dirty but not filthy. We'll be back. read more

I really like this restaurant. Great food, good service, great atmosphere. One of our favorite local restaurants. However, we were there this weekend and the entree I ordered was a huge disappointment. They had a special on a veal entree. It consisted of three tiny pieces of veal on some kind of a pastry. It was more like an appetizer than an entree. Had my wife not shared her Plan B Burger and french fries with me I would have gone home extremely hungry. To make things worse they charged us $34 for this appetizer masquerading as an entree. It was indeed a BAD deal! read more

I have been here numerous times and I always have a great time. The proprietors are French and the place has a notable feel in this respect. In particular I recommend their Gnocchi, which is soft, tender and out of this world. Everything else is great too, give them a try. Plus, the Plan B Cafe downtown is just as good. I was looking for a place to plan a Mom's Night Out event and needed a venue that was close and comfortable. I am blessed to live near Plan B but had not tried the restaurant. I tentatively made the reservation for the event based on all the great internet reviews. A week before the event I decided to try the food and get a feel for the space. I could not have been more pleased. We came in without a reservation ( I recommend getting a reservation). The staff was friendly and accommodating. We came for appetizers and stayed for dinner. My husband and I ordered the calamari and nantaise mussels for appetizers. I' have traveled and lived overseas. I can tell you these were some of the best I've had. For his main course my husband selected salmon from the menu and was very pleased. I selected the filet mingon special. It was wonderful. I grew up in cattle country and know what beef tastes like. Most restaurants overcook, over season or use lower quality meat. Plan B got it right. I am looking forward to our event and will be a regular at this restaurant. read more

We have been to Plan B Restaurant 6 or 7 times in the last 18 months. We have found the food to be excellant and extremely fresh. One of the best items on their menu is steamed mussels. They are some of the best I have ever had. The Owner/Chef serves them 4 or 5 different ways and we have tried all of them. I have not been a huge mussel fan until Plan B opened in the Arden Town Center on the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd. and Watt Avenue. There are a few other restaurants in the center, but Plan B is superior to the others in our opinion. They offer a varied menu, Rack of Lamb, A tremendous Hamberger with cheese, several seafood dishes, wonderful made to order french fries with fresh herb sprinkled on them. Great assortment of appetizers, There is plenty of menu items to choose from and I'm sure they will satisfy most every taste. Wine list is very good and the prices are what you might expect, but not too pricy. They also offer a full bar! I doubt you will be disappointed! read more

I took my mother here for her birthday dinner. It was my first time; she chose it as one of her favorite restaurants. Everything was perfect! The owner greeted us at the door with a big smile on his face. We had a reservation and he offered us a choice of tables. Lenny was our waiter and he was friendly and helpful. The food was exquisite. We both had Caesar salads and the salmon. Thank goodness we had bread so that I could clean my plate without actually licking it! I cannot recommend Plan B highly enough. read more

We were going there about twice a month because we liked the snail in the pastry. We stopped going there because one time I ordered the steak and that was a big mistake. I asked for medium rare. When the steak came out it was pale! Wasn't seared at all and it was way too rare! I asked to send it back and the rude Owner came out and explained that's how it's made here. You should have seen his face, he was mad! The replacement steak came out and it was still pale but not as raw. It was OK but I wouldn't order it again. We finished dinner and left. When we got home my wife realized that she left her sunglasses at the restaurant. She called right away and Joe said he would put the glasses aside. The next day we went to get the glasses the RUDE Owner said they didn't have them. She told the Owner that Joe had put them aside last night. So now all of a sudden the glasses aren't there. We all know that the Owner and his wife kept the glasses because they were mad that I sent the steak back. I don't understand how these people run a business. I noticed that not only this French Restaurant is run by very rude owners, many French Restaurants are run by rude owners. The odd thing is in Paris the owners are nice, even in St. Barths the owners are nice. They funny part is that after our first time at Plan B we were walking to our car and the Lady Owner chased us down because we forgot to leave a tip!!! Who in the world would chase people down about the tip except these French Rude Owners! No matter how good their food is, the rudeness will always prevail because these Owners are NOT people friendly, they are just in it for the money!! I hope they go out of business for what they did! read more

Sorry to say it, since the food is quite good, but the service is absolutely ATROCIOUS. If you are a more senior individual who has hours and hours to burn eating your last meal as you wait for death to take you, sure, it's a nice way to wile away an evening - and in fact, it seemed the remainder of the clientele was doing just this. If, however, you are entertaining an interviewee for a prospective job at your workplace, do NOT come to this restaurant expecting that you'll be wining and dining this person into accepting the position. If you are a person who cares about retaining feeling in your pudendal region and does not desire to sit in the same chair wasting away as you suffer through a three+ hour meal, do NOT come to this restaurant. Three hours at the French Laundry or Meadowood, I'll do. When I'm having a simple two course meal, it's unfathomable. Waiting over an hour between appetizers and entrees with no update, no clearing of dirty plates, no refilling of water glasses, and absolutely no apologies from wait staff or the owner for the delay no doubt will leave a poor impression. The explanation for the tardiness of entrees was, "well, when you have a group of 8 (actually, we were 6), it takes a long time." This might be excusable for a novice kitchen staff on a soft open of a new restaurant. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant that's been around for several years. Learn how to fire your dishes on time. Assign someone, anyone, to expedite the orders properly. It's not a large restaurant, and it's never packed to the gills, so why it takes over an hour to produce quail (a bird that cooks very quickly and is hence prone to overcooking), a salad, and lamb chops (also cook very quickly), I have no idea. At the very least, such horrible service warrants an apology and some modicum of improvement in service for the remainder of the meal, neither of which occurred. HORRID. At my workplace, we frequently bring prospective job candidates to dinner here, and in fact, are scheduled to return again in a couple of weeks. I will do my damnedest to make sure this doesn't happen in a town that has so many other wonderful restaurants. I have to say, tonight's ridiculously bad service - which I have experienced on 4-5 other evenings at Plan B - was the nail in the coffin. read more

***As an update, the owner has not credited the overcharge even though I had to give my cc number over the phone for the refund. So I reported them to my credit card company as a fraudulent charge. Mr owner: you can ignore my calls but not your merchant's calls. Plan B has truly been a nightmare.*** Where do I start with my HORRIFIC experience? I have never felt so upset towards a restaurant and their service. Went to eat dinner with my family 2 weeks ago and this was my experience: We came to the restaurant around 5 when there were just a few people. The food came out painfully slow and it did not taste great for the price. It was food that I could have made myself at home and pay less than half the price. The steak literally had some seasoning on it and thats it. We ordered a drink and the cup was chipped and it cut my family member's lip. Our waitress did not even apologize and simply just poured the existing drink into a new cup. We were not compensated for the inconvenience or cut lip so we decided to leave less of a tip. We were nice enough to even tip them. We wrote down the reasons on the receipt and went our way after a 2.5 hour meal because of the slow service. A week later, I see they charged me 19% tip when that is not the % that I left. I called the restaurant asking for a refund for the overcharge and I did not hear from the them after several calls. Finally out of rightful anger, I called last night and demanded that they give me back my money they basically stole without my consent. The owner calls me and gives me MAJOR attitude. I have never had someone speak that rudely to me EVER. He basically told me they lost my signed copy so they took the liberty to charge 19% tip. WHAT A LIE!! First of all, if you LOST my signed copy then what right do you have to charge me 19%?? You could have charged the basic rate of 15% especially for losing my receipt. My gut is telling me that you were unhappy with my tip and therefore charged more and gave me the lame excuse that you "lost" it. He makes me give me my credit card number over the phone as he still gives me attitude. This is a restaurant to avoid. Make a trip to the great restaurants in downtown sac where the customer service is WAY better and the food is amazing. We originally wanted to go to Ella but they were all booked so we settled for Plan B. Biggest mistake ever. I still cannot get over how the owner of a restaurant can be so rude to a customer. You have a business b/c of customers so please treat us respectfully. I had the right to be upset b/c I received a charge that was wrong. So the least you could have done is apology and just give me back the overcharged amount without the attitude. You have just lost me as a customer forever. We had dinner here last night and it was a disaster. First we ordered the calamari that had no seasoning so I had to ask for salt. My date had the rib-eye steak that came out looking like it was thrown in the weeds before it was put on his plate and then topped with frozen butter that wouldn't melt because his steak was cold. I had the burger that came out raw. Seriously I cut it in half and it was raw meat. I asked them to please make me another one, which the waiter took care of. However, the whole thing took so long that my date had finished his meal before I got my burger back. When I got my burger back I took off the top of the bun and it was the exact same burger that I sent back all cut in half with the same toppings and cheese. I seriously think they put it in the microwave. When I actually tried the burger it had absolutely no seasoning. I could not believe it. I waited all this time for the burger and it tasted like nothing, even though it has mushrooms, cheese, and ham on it. I tried to eat it because I staving, but I could not because it was so gross. When the bill came, I was seriously pissed that the gross burger was still on the bill, so my date asked the manager to remove it. He did end up removing it, but he got all pissy. Also, their tiny little beer sampler glass martini's (which the manager says are 5oz., but I doubt they are even that) suck, so don't bother. I have no problem paying for the standard 8oz. martini that every other restaurant I go to has that tastes great, but seriously this jerk thinks that his crappy watered down martini's are worth $9 just because he uses premium liquor. Seriously, what decent restaurant in Sacramento doesn't use grey goose in the cocktails? I don't know maybe it's just because he was French that he thought I should have been impressed by him and his restaurants "uniqueness". Apparently, I should go around blabbing that I am also French, and maybe I would have gotten better service because his food is crap and every other restaurant in Sacramento has better food and service. His "uniqueness" needs a serious adjustment. Oh and the "specials" changed throughout the time we were there and the poor waiter had to go back and tell a couple who ordered one of them that what they ordered had to be different. read more

Husband and wife run this restaurant and they ensure that you will be served and treated well. I found the food great and the ambience perfect for a date night or a lingering afternoon lunch. The dress is a somewhere between casual and dressy: you don't want to wear sweats but you don't need a dress or jacket either. We took our four year old daughter here (this was truly our "plan b" restaurant for the night as our other choice was closed) and while the place is not really set up for children, they were very accommodating, smart about removing the knives/candles from her side of the table, and made a great fish and chip meal for her that was AMAZING -- I ended up eating her leftovers later that night. There are not many casual, romantic restaurants in this area of town, but this restaurant is a hit. As for the food, the ratatouille, mashed potatoes, lamb, french fries and tartin special were flavorful and served quickly. My husband and I kidded (slightly) about ordering a big batch of the ratatouille in the winter time for takeout. read more

alas, i remain convinced that the pocket's best foodie treasures are found at nugget market- not unfortunately, at this little cafe whose chic and charming design woefully misrepresented the food my hubby and i ended up getting for lunch. a $10 burger and a $10 steak sandwich... both pieces of meat were charred beyond recognition, such that every bite tasted overwhelmingly of carcinogenic doom. we overheard the chef murmuring about a freezer dysfunction to his friends sitting nearby (yeah, AFTER we'd taken our first bites)... perhaps that was what caused the chef to be overzealous with his grilling... but which is worse? serving possibly tainted meat at all or making it inedible with prophylactic burning??? perhaps we'd fare better at dinner, judging from previous reviews... but that's a gastronomical and financial risk i'm not currently prepared to take :( i'm giving 2 stars for the tasty pommes allumettes... and the fact that we didn't, after all, end up with a nasty gastroenteritis. read more

My wife and i are moving into this area in the next few weeks and are looking for a new haunt. we decided to give plan b a try on a family members recommendation. i don't think we'll be going back, there was nothing there that would entice a return visit. when you arrive you are greeted by heads turning to see who's walking in, and not in a good way, the crowd is geriatric and the food is lacking. we split a bottle of wine ($40), appetizers ($35) and salads ($20) for a grand total of nearly $100...even though the caesar salad was one of the best i've ever had (and i LOVE a good caesar) there is no way I'd go back. the Salmon app was oily and fishy and the calamari was chewy and tough. The wait staff is unprofessional and way to familiar, she kept touching me! I could understand if i was a regular and she knew me but this was my first visit. Try for yourself, maybe i was there on an off night, but none the less, I wont go back. read more

He even brought me my rosé wine that I ordered and informed me that it was from France. The food was simply delicious in every way. My husband and I got the mussels as an appetizer and you could just taste how fresh they were! It was so delightful! For our entrees, we ordered the chicken and the salmon. Had dinner here tonight-- 6:30--reservation--served at 9:00. 2 of 5 dinners were cold. When the[server was told, he just shrugged. At the end of the evening, we registered our complaints and were told to come back another time--they were just too busy tonight. Finally, to add insult to injury, the person to whom we were complaining, just walked away. Service was terrible--food was cold, and the corkage charge exceeded that of the Firehouse. A friend and I ate at this restaurant on a whim while I was visiting her in Sacramento back in early December. We were so glad that we did! Although it doesn't look like much from the outside due to its location in a strip mall, the decor inside is relaxed and welcoming. We made reservations for Plan B for our wedding anniversary. I told them, in advance, it was our anniversary and would like a nice table. When we arrived we were seated at the worse table in the restaurant, right next to the service station. Perhaps they have something against happily married couples? They were kind enough to re-seat us when asked. We both ordered salads, I was served a salad I did not order. It was replaced when I brought it to their attention. The salad was good, it was just the lack of attention to detail that started bothering me. Both my husband and I ordered steaks. I ordered a medium rare Fillet Mignon. Both steaks arrived, I took two bites from mine and found it to be well done. I asked for the server's opinion and she agreed it was well done and took my plate back to the kitchen. By the time I got my steak my husband had finished his dinner. Again, lack of attention to detail. My husband's meal was just so so. Last night was our 5th time eating at Plan B--And it was fabulous, as usual! The ambience is perfect--hip and cool, yet calm and intimate. I have had the salmon 3 times, and it is the best I've had in Sacramento. My husband has had the rack of lamb, filet mignon, mussels, duck--All of it fantastic. Each time we go we order a different tartlette and they have all been interesting and delicious (my hubby's fave was the fig and goat cheese, although last night we had a classic pissaladiere which was divine.) The spinach salad is perfection--a light, subtly flavored dressing makes it superb. We have also enjoyed the mache and caesar salads. The desserts are some of the best we've ever had...The fondant cake (a molten chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream) is our standard go-to, but the blackberry tart has a phenomenal crust--try it if they have it! (The chocolate mousse is amazing, as well--sort of like a combination between a ganache and a pudding--rich and decadent.) At first my husband was nervous because they didn't stock his favorite high-end gin at the bar, but the owner recommended a tasty french substitute, and it is just as good. This is a fabulous place to bring your kids, if they are mature and enjoy the dining experience (no crayons here!) My 6 and 8 year-olds were delighted to be treated like adults and they enjoyed both the "kid friendly" entrees and bites of our meals... PLEASE, please try this restaurant! I wanted to try something new, so for my birthday made reservations for a group of 8. At first the waiter was nice and chatty, talking us into buying some drinks. We ordered our food and waited... And waited and waited... I was unaware of this, but my friend asked for the wifi password to submit an assignment before we started eating dinner and the waiter exploded, saying how could she, the boss was already getting mad for putting tables together, saying that our order was not big enough, that he expected us to buy more alcohol. He just kept on going, sharing his bosses thoughts like they were friends. . Right after she ate, she left very upset. Still confused at what's going on, we asked for our check and asked to split between couples. Then he began saying OMG this is so much work, why are you making me break the check, my computer is too small and slow for this..... Started whining and being a pain in the ass... We couldn't believe our eyes. Very unpleasant experience. Better to have a solid plan A. NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN!!!!! I had dinner at Plan B Saturday night with a couple of friends for the first time. I loved the interior; it was so different from what I expected as we drove up. Location is a little strange, being in a strip mall, but the food was very good. All three of us enjoyed our entrées very much and the crème brûlée was absolutely delightful. One of the best crème brûlées I've ever had. Major criticism on their tartelettes however. The dough was very very tough and lacked flavor. The goat cheese topping on one of them was a little heavy, in my opinion, which made it cold. I will return, if I am in the neighborhood, but will probably try their cafe in midtown first (when it opens). read more

Better look into Plan C. Never have I heard so many good things about a place and been so disappointed by the experience. While food was good, the waitress was rude, slow, uncaring and surly. Could not get water, could not get a glass of wine and it took over an hour to get our order. Not worth the hassle, although I did get a lot of exercise walking in and out of the place looking for things we ordered. I guess we're the first for this Valentines Day. We left happy. Prix fixe menu at $70. Albert greeted us warmly by name. Lenny served us graciously as always. I had the oysters mignonette, she had the escargot en croute. Both were very good. Next I had a salad of nuts, butter lettuce, and fruit, she had a pear/chicken broth soup she liked a lot. Then I had duck confit (a tender leg) with mashed potatoes and Salsify. I knew of it but never had it. It was subtle but had some sport to it (the Salsify). MIght seek it out in the market. The duck and mashers were very good as always. (I recommend their pommes frites slightly above the mashed generally). She had pork tenderloin with foie gras and cauliflower. It was a bit overdone and the foie gras was more of a suggestion in the sauce than a real thing. Dessert was a cheesecake that looked very good and chocolate mousse that was very good. A recommended Turley Amador Zin rounded it all off nicely. It was a special for Valentines Day. We might have eaten a different day and had the very same for less but hey, what is romance for?
