I have been a loyal customer of this establishment for many years--I even have text records to prove how frequently I've ordered. But today was the final straw. This restaurant consistently messes up simple orders. I'd estimate that only about 50% of the time do they actually get my order right. The other half? I end up having to call, explain, and get a replacement. That is not an acceptable track record, especially from a business I've gone out of my way to support. I always order the same simple sandwich--nothing complicated--and today was no different. As you can see from the attached receipt, it should've been straightforward. Instead, the sandwich was made incorrectly again. This marks the third separate time the same mistake has happened. Enough is enough. Yes, the manager was polite and offered a refund, and I appreciated that. But let's consider the bigger picture: I have back-to-back meetings from 12-4pm. I ordered ahead online like I always do. I picked up the sandwich, brought it back to my desk, and then realized it was wrong--again. Not only was my time wasted, but I also paid extra for specific toppings that weren't even included. I choose to support local businesses in the Downtown Saint Louis area, but it's incredibly frustrating when the quality is inconsistent and mistakes are frequent. Sadly, it also seems like the food is only right when the manager makes it, which is disappointing for a business that should pride itself on consistent service no matter who's preparing the food. Unfortunately, I just had a terrible experience at this location. I ordered through DoorDash and my sandwich came to very unappealing and absolutely incorrect. I ordered the half veggie. I received a sandwich that ONLY had brown romaine lettuce, banana peppers and chipotle sauce. That was all that was on the sandwich. No cheese, none of the other veggies that are supposed to come on the sandwich. What's worse is when I called and asked for the manager, a gentleman got on the phone and would not listen to a word I was attempting to say. He started talking over me immediately and then got angry when I became frustrated that he was talking over me. I asked for the owner, and he said he was the owner. He called me names then told me, "You know what, call DoorDash and tell them to give you a refund!" then hung up on me. They would not answer the phone again when I called back because I had hoped to get his name. Please do not eat at this establishment. I am so frustrated and can't believe this happened. read more

This place has some seriously delicious subs! My visit was brief but my sammich was really good. I walked in with a group of 11 and I could tell the staff was like "wow, great," but they cooperated and we all put in our orders. I went with the veggie on wheat (swiss, mozzarella, American, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and I subbed the olive spread for the mayo.) We sat down and they gave us a playing card (that's how they keep track of who ordered what) and everything was out hot and ready in just a few minutes. My sandwich was so good but had way too much cheese (I should've noticed that there were three cheeses in the description) but overall it was very, very good. There are TONS of vegetarian options and a lot of creative subs on the menu, and if I worked downtown I'd be hitting this place up as much as possible. Only gripe are the bathrooms here... yikes. The soap is up on the wall and they put a bunch of water in it to make it last longer, and it just kind of squirts in a puddle on the ground before you can catch it all. I walk by this place every weekday while running errands for work, but I only recently dismissed the less-than-inviting facade and ventured inside. I'm sad it took me so long! As a vegetarian, sandwich shops are generally safe bets for a quick lunch, but that usually means I can order the single vegetarian option or ask for something sans meat/cheese/mayo. I expected as much at Planet Sub, but I found so much more.... Tempeh! Delicious tempeh! And the bread was pretty damn good, too. I can't wait to go back to try another veggie option. Also, I was pleased to find the interior much more welcoming than the entrance (dark windows, dark street, overall blah). I have been going to Planet Sub for 8 years now. They have consistently good sandwiches and service. We had used Panera for years for boxed lunches but once we looked into what Planet Sub offers, we have never gone back. The quality is there and it's a better value for the money - no question. Our vendors love the variety that Planet Sub has when we offer it for our Expo. the sandwiches are interesting and there is a variety of flavors - and dietary options. Their gluten free bread is very good. I don't feel like I am being cheated on my sandwich with a lesser bread. I also want to note that the accuracy for large lunch orders has been really good. This has not been our experience with other places. When you have guests, you want to make sure they got what they ordered and I have confidence in Planet Sub that it will happen every time. I'm shocked that people are complaining about the bread. The bread here is awesome! They make the bread themselves right in front of you with only a few ingredients. The sandwiches come out hot and fresh and there are so many to pick from, it's hard to choose one. I eat a lot, but stick with the 6-inch and am always all good. They also have great specials, on Tuesdays the 6-inch Turkey is only $2 (beat that Subway). read more

The downtown Planet Sub tries really hard. I have to credit the staff a lot as they are usually overrun by the time lunch rolls around on a Tuesday for their $2.50 turkey specials. It seems almost like they need more help to deal with the obscene amount of professionals who seem to storm the sandwich shop every Tuesday. I went yesterday around 11:30am and the place already had a line that would snake around at least two different bends. Needless to say my co-worker and abandoned our tradition and headed somewhere else for lunch. Looking at the prices and for what I'm paying I still say this is probably one of the more expensive fast food restaurants downtown. Sandwiches are around $5 for a 6inch compared to Subway or Jimmy Johns. While they do charge more for less there is definitely a variety in different sandwiches they do offer. If you are hungry and you walk in and are not able to find something that looks tasty (aside from the price) then someone needs to check to make sure you are alive. I love the inside of the place just because it is all hard wood booths and tables and, compared to the street outside, like going into a cave almost. It is also nice that they have a TV with ESPN on constantly so I can catch up on what happened last night in sports. I think there is at least one more TV in the back of the restaurant as well. My advice? If you are going in for Turkey Tuesday, get there early or suffer in the line. Any other time I don't think you'll have an issue. read more

I was downtown for jury duty and found Planet Subs nearby. It was my first time there and if I am in the area for lunch again I will definitely make a repeat visit. I had the beefeater which was a great meaty sandwich. Every bite was a pleasure. They also didn't give me a choice of breads. I know that sounds bad, but I like that. Do one bread, and do it right. Meh-OK? OK-meh? 2 or 3? 3 or 2? Meh and 2 it is. Here's my logic -- bread is what makes a sub (when dealing with chains). If you have decent bread, we're in business. But, if you muck up the bread, or worse yet, if you promise a "golden, crispy crust" but don't deliver, well, then we have a problem. My sub today had some decent ingredients, but it was on some mushy, boring bread. And I've been in tanning beds that have provided more toasty that these subs. Now, if it had been filled with Volpi meats, the bread might have been forgiven. If I had paid $5.00 for it, well, I could get over it. But $8.50? Hell no. Not for this dinky, mushy, sub. The rest of the menu temps me, but I'd rather head over to the grocery store and do it DIY-style. read more

Coming here during lunch hours when Urbana was taking place, I expecting a long wait for food but I think this place deserves to be noted for the efficiency of their food making because in no time at all, my food was already ready. It's also pretty cool that they give you a playing card to identify you for the order. I got a mega roast beef. I was a bit surprised that it doesn't come as a foot long sub but rather two halves. That aside, the roast beef was pretty good as it tore apart easily and all the flavors matched pretty well. But honestly, since there was a good amount of barbeque sauce, it was mostly what I tasted. It was definitely good for what it was though and it was a very decently filling meal. I was here for a student conference between Christmas + New Years, and with the lack of quick food options in STL, this place was a lifesaver! I was totally addicted to their sandwiches. I definitely came 2 days in a row to eat at this well-priced(~$6) and quick sandwich shop. There is nothing like a hot sandwich as a welcome to a new city. As for service, I was amazed at how they were able to accommodate a flood of 16000 new faces to STL. Really patient and kind service. They have a great selection of sandwiches for vegetarians, which is so good! Try the Planet Veggie. I also liked the sandwich with the mozzarella and pesto (Bella Pesto). Mmm. read more

**this is for the Maplewood location. I tried to add a new listing, but Yelp wasn't cooperating** Some people call me cheap, but I prefer "savvy shopper." I just love a good bargain. Of course this leads to a sort of hoarding of online deals. I can't help it. I think my Groupon queue is like 5 pages long. But, the true test is whether I would return to a place without a Groupon, or restaurant.com, or living social.... I have to say that Planet Sub passed this test with flying colors. I had a crazy busy day and needed lunch on the run. I thought about my Planet Sub Groupon, but didn't get around to printing it out. Luckily my fancy new Android phone is able to redeem Groupons paperlessly. Score! I walk in and get greeted in Spanish. Oookay. So I respond in kind. Then the kid tells me that all he really knows in Spanish is "Como estas?" and "mi gusta (sic) las chicas." Cute and endearing or a sad commentary on foreign language education? Hard to say. Luckily he was a better sandwich maker than Spanish conversationalist. Since I had the Groupon for $10, I went big with the large creamy club. I was a little unsure about the cream cheese on the sandwich and actually, still am a bit undecided. At some parts of the sandwich, it was just like melted cheese. But other parts were very cream cheesy and made me feel like I should be eating a bagel. But, it's like their signature thing so I had to try it. Especially after he told me that "it's the most popular chick sandwich." This sandwich is huge. Huge. Two meals worth that probably could have stretched to a third if not for a minor hangover issue. But damn was it good. The bread (wheat by the way. Standard.) was just toasty enough that it crunched when you bit into it. it was pretty damn near perfect. The turkey was piled high, the sprouts were fresh, the tomatoes were a-ok, and the bacon was real!! Major points for not using wimpy gross pre-cooked bacon. The sandwich was also thick. Like "can I do this is one bite?" kinda thick. So I go to pay with my phone feeling all super high tech and notice that my Groupon says "redeemed." Even though I cradled that sucker like a precious little baby bird, somehow between walking in the door and getting my sandwich do I manage to screw up the wonderful technology that is paying with a cell phone. Thankfully, mi amigo nuevo took pity on my smartphone illiteracy and let it slide in exchange for a few more spanish lessons. I like this transplant from Kansas. I first experienced Planet Sub as the Yellow Submarine in Lawrence KS. The menu is great. the subs come "baked' or not. The combinations are good. i get the Dagwood most often. The decor is decidedly 70's college. Rustic wood and dimly lit. Great location challenging the Culinaria food court. read more
