First off, this was hands down one of the best meals I have ever had in Austin. Every bite was perfection and beautifully plated. We started with the shishito peppers which were delightfully smoky, and followed with the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp and the Red Snapper. We ended our meal with the Meyer Lemon Chess Tart. Everything was cooked perfectly and frankly I could have eaten more. That being said this was some of the worst service I have had in a long time. We arrived shortly before Happy Hour and sat at the bar. The male bartender with a bun greeted us, and then took about fifteen minutes to actually take our order. He returned about five minutes later and asked if we wanted to order food and we decided to wait five minutes until Happy Hour officially started. After that he never spoke to us again. The two female bartenders were equally as inattentive and we practically had to flag them down to get their attention. Our entrees arrived separately even though we ordered them at the same time, we had to ask for silverware and napkins, and not once did any of the staff ask us how our food was or if we needed anything. For the quality of food and the level of cooking I expected much better service, especially at the bar where the staff can see you the entire time. At the end of the day, this place is easily five star food but one star service. If they were slammed it would have been one thing, but with three bartenders working and there being plenty of empty seats around the bar it's hard to make excuses. Still, definitely willing to give them another shot and I would highly recommend the food to anyone. Just be prepared to be ignored. read more

I will have to say that with a heavy heart: do not even try! I saw this place opened and was excited about giving it a try: location at domain is great - forget about the hell parking situation that is so common in that area-, ambience seemed inviting, and I am a seafood lover. Yes, I was excited. Got the opportunity to give it a try last week with a friend and let me tell you...not the best experience: Tuna tartare has more celery and whatever mix they use than tuna. Do not expect to taste any tuna or avocado, so common in most recipes. It was "blah", almost like dog food out of the can. We decided to try ceviche. What could go wrong, right? Tilapia, lemons juice, some salt....voile! Not that fast, similar to the tuna tartare, the ceviche tasted like nothing. Whatever mix they use to - probably save money and misled customers- is really troubling. Can't describe to you what it tasted like but...it was not ceviche. Yes. I am being generous here. Some chips on top- not bread, nor toast, some chips, made it even more..."cheap"?! I asked the waiter if the lemonade was fresh squeezed. She advertised a fresh squeezed natural lemonade. I repeated "it is not powder thing mixed with water, right?" She guaranteed it wasn't. Well, you guessed it right....very weak powder lemonade with one slice of old real lemon. We sat outside and it was hell. Literally a sauna. And I love the heat. Honestly, they could use some fan or anything pretty much to make the experience more tolerable. At the end I was hungry, disappointed and wet of so much sweat (yes I am skinny 120 pounds wearing a Loth summer dress ) The love was hot. Ok, services... clearly the waiter is a charmer and liar. I've been to Plank three times. The first was fine. Neither the service or the food were worthy of comment. Not exceptionally good, or bad. Just fine. The second time I went, the experience was fantastic. Our waiter possessed remarkable knowledge of the menu and the sources of the seafood. He enthusiastically offered suggestions when asked. Guided by his suggestions, we embarked on a delicious and exciting multi-course meal. He recommended that we course our dishes, and by that I mean that they bring out each dish as comes out of the kitchen, with the intent for it to be shared by the table. It is not divided into plates or portions. It's the same entree you would receive as if ordered by an individual person, plated in exactly the same way. This was good, because everything came out at the perfect temperature and texture. The not-so-good part I'll get to further on in the review. Highlights included PEI raw oysters and some of the bestrredfish I've ever eaten. The petite salmon tower, with three entrees was the perfect amount of food for four adults - with just enough room left over for crepes down the street. The third time I went was a terrible experience. We went at 4 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated directly under a speaker. The music was so loud I couldn't hear anything that the waitress said, so my husband had to stand up get close enough to hear her and translate for the rest of the table. The music was not loud at either of my other two experiences, and the second visit was on a Saturday evening, when I would expect loud music. But a Sunday afternoon? Conversation was impossible because it required yelling to hear what anyone was saying at the table. My teenage son put on his noise-canceling headphones because the music was giving him a headache. We asked the waitress if she could turn down the music. She came back and asked if it was better. We told her it wasn't. I wish we'd asked or been offered to move to another table, or outside because at 4 p.m. on a Sunday, lots of tables were empty. We just endured. We did the coursed meal again, and like my first visit, the food was fine. Not bad, not great. Acceptable. Nothing to rave about. The scallops were too chewy. The fingerling potatoes were bland and dry. I thought the oysters were fine, but my dining companions said they smelled fishy, so ended up eating nine out of a dozen. No complaints from me, though. Not as good as my previous experience, but as good as you can expect for a land-locked city. By the time we were done with the meal, our party of six was exhausted from the musical assault and cancelled further plans because we were all just done for the night. I left apologizing to the rest of the party saying, "I promise it was really great the last time I was here!" My biggest complaint about Plank, overall, is the logistics of their coursing. They bring the plates of food, with the intent to share, but with no serving utensils. This is not finger food. You are expected to use the same utensils you've been eating with to serve yourself from the communal dish. You are brought, for example, a filet of fish you'll have to cut it into portions, if you intend to share, with the same utensils that have been in your mouth. If you're going to course the menu, you'd better be comfortable enough with your dining companions to share saliva. I asked the waitress if she could bring us some extra utensils for serving. I don't know if she didn't hear me or if she was confused, but she gave me a bewildered expression and didn't bring any serving utensils. The music was as loud as a nightclub, so if I couldn't hear her she probably couldn't hear me either. My recommendation would be to check the sound level before you order to make sure it meets your comfort level. As far as the quality of food, I don't know of anywhere in Austin that I'd say is consistently better thank Plank, other than Perla's. If you're looking for seafood and don't want to drive to South Congress, I wouldn't discourage you from going. I'd say there's a 33% chance you'll have a great experience, but I also wouldn't be surprised if your experience was less than ideal. If you're looking for a low-risk, consistently good dining experience, like for out-of-town guests or an important date, I can't recommend Plank. I will go again. My second visit was so good, it makes me want to give them another shot. Austin doesn't have a lot of dedicated Seafood restaurants, so I'm rooting for their success. I won't however, be sharing anything other than one of the towers. I'll update my review after my next visit. read more

I really wanted to like this place. We had reservations for 5 adults and a child tonight. I ordered the Blackened Burger after seeing so many good reviews! Ummm, not only did my order come out 20-25 min after everyone's order which was a mix of Tuna Ahi, Salmon, Soft Shell Crab Sandwiches & a kids burger, it came out cold and literally no flavor! Stopped by for dinner after doing some shopping at the Domain and I am absolutely glad I did. The dresses oysters were amazing, red fish and clam chowder awesome, and our waiter (I'm kicking myself that I can't remember his name), was absolutely incredible. I have celiacs and he was so knowledgeable and I 100% trusted what he was going to bring me was 100% gluten free, and no tummy aches afterwards! Be warned their gluten free menu is not actually all gluten free (super dangerous Plank, please fix your gluten free menu to only 100% gluten free items, or people will get confused and sick) but their waitstaff is amazing and knowledgeable about allergies! read more

We came here for happy hour and didn't plan to stay long but.... I'm loving this new way to prepare seafood! Oysters so fresh you just need to add a little lemon. Calamari with a puree that is definitely not one note. Pickled shrimp on crackers, sounds strange right? Not at all, it was amazing! My sister literally drank the sauce that was left. Walking through the Domain a few weeks ago and noticed the Plank Seafood was opening soon. Pretty excited to try it out, since it seems the good Domain dining options have gone downhill in the last couple years. Dropped in early on a Tuesday evening. It was quiet, as expected and my wife and I sat at the bar. Instant attention from staff while we perused the menu....a lot of tasty options. My wife ordered a sparkling wine and I got a beer to start. What happened next is when you know you are at a great place. Her wine was a little warm compared to a proper temp. One of the other servers asked if she wanted another glass and she lightly mentioned it was a little warm. Right away she says there has been a problem with the under bar coolers and offered to get a cold bottle from the back with a new glass on the house. Wow, thanks! Then we watched her get a cart and empty every bottle out of this cooler and take them to the back to solve this glitch with the cooler. It is not that there can never be a problem, but it is how you deal with it that impressed us so that no other diner had this experience. As we relaxed and ordered the Calamari every server that came by the bar to pick a drink up would kindly ask if we were doing ok or needed anything. Really appreciate that. First order was the Calamari. I am a big fan of Calamari and I am a Calamari snob. While it was a great attempt, it just was not spot on to me. But hold on, it gets a thousand times better. Next we ordered the scallops. Now, again I am also a scallop snob. Disappointed many times on under cooked scallops. What came out was probably in the top three scallop dishes I have ever had. Perfectly cooked, delicious!! Then, the manager stopped over to see how we were doing and we asked for some recommendations. He highly spoke of the pickled shrimp. We said, sounds great and he went and ordered it for us on the house. Truly, it was amazing and appreciated the comp for no reason. We also ordered the smoked fish as our final tasting. I could not dream of the scallop dish being beaten, but wow, wow, wow! It was incredible, so delicious. Summary, exemplary service, attention to detail and customer satisfaction. ( above and beyond attitude ) Stunning seafood for what we tried. Definitely will be back to The Plank instead of many other seafood places in the area. Much better. I doubted this place for awhile just due to the hype surrounding it - I now doubt everything else in my life. The oysters were incredible (and this is coming from someone born and raised on the East Coast). The Cupid's Choice and blue point's were fantastic. Plus, they have $2 oysters on Monday's - what a deal! WB (Whitney) provided excellent customer service and was very insightful. It's really remarkable that they fly their oysters in 3 times a week! We ordered 18 oysters (blue point CT are THE best), clam strips, pickled shrimp, yellowfin sashimi, blue cheese salad, shishito peppers, Brussels sprouts, and calamari and everything came out hot and tasty. Pleasant environment with an excellent server (Jordan?) for dinner. My partner and I had the royal seafood tower to get a taste of everything for our first visit including apps and drinks. The raw oysters were my favorite, except for the poor shucking of the oysters. There were small pieces of shells here and there that we had to spit out one too many times... at least the oyster wasn't sandy. I was very interested in the dressed oysters, but unfortunately it was too salty, so I only ate one of the six included in the tower. If you like salty food, this place is made for you. Almost all of the other main dishes (wood grilled) and apps (calamari, octopus, etc.) that were ordered in our party were too salty for everyone's palate, but we endured and ate them anyways because of the price we had to pay $$$. (Each couple in the party spent $200+ for minimum subtotal.) If you love salt and seafood, come. If you love seafood, stick with the fresh food that hasn't been fiddled with. ICED OYSTERS, horseradish, hot sauce, mignonette : These are the freshest tasting oysters I've ever had. They taste like they came out the sea that morning. RED SNAPPER, hazelnut brown butter, meyer lemon, fingerling potato, broccolini. The snapper is the least fishy tasting ever: The flavor is light and delicious. The fingerling potato and broccolini were excellent as well. Also the Meyer Lemons rock! PICKLED SHRIMP, old bay, pickled shallot, hot sauce, crème fraiche, duck fat saltines :This was the surprise of the meal. The Pickeled Shrimp is not what you I thought it would taste like there was a light shrimp flavor and I could not taste the brine from the pickleing. The taste was great and the shrimp went along great with the duck fat saltines (wanted more saltines to take home). CALAMARI, pickled shallot, lime aioli, aji puree : Simply the best combination of calamari and aioli ever. Plank knows how to pair flavors. PEI MUSSELS, salsa negra, chicharron, crema, mexican oregano, scallion salsa verde, avocado, grilled sourdough:Another dish that was prepared perfectly the stock added a great flavor to the fresh mussels. Super dish. STEAK TARTINE, sourdough toast, bacon onion jam, pickled onion, rogue smokey blue, chive : The steak was incredibly tinder the flavor were great (was great with beer). The sour dough toast was another great pairing with the other ingredients that all came together for another great dish. CHOCOLATE TERRINE, peanut butter ice cream, cultured milk crumble, bing cherry, smoked maldon : We actually got this to go. Even so the chocolate was creamy any and sweet and this a decadent treat for any chocolate lover. STRAWBERRY SURFER plank infused citrus vodka, lemon, strawberry, coconut : Light and different great cocktail. CUCUMBER COLLINS plank infused cucumber gin, lemon, cucumber, soda water: Again perfectly made cocktail and we know we had a few of them and each time made perfectly the same way. We sat outside and the ambiance was perfect on a spring late afternoon Austin day. Plank Seafood is a great addition to the Austin restaurant seen. In addition I wanted to save the best for last: The service was superb. The staff worked as a team: We had around four different people bring food, bring drinks, or just check to see if all was well. I encourage everyone to indulge in the great food (try as many things as possible) ALL I TRIED WAS EXCELLENT. I think I've finally convinced my boyfriend that seafood is actually tasty because of coming here. My hubby wanted a good meal out & craved seafood - specifically fried shrimp. According to some pics of the menu he found online plus the good reviews we got dressed up to enjoy a date night out. We were seated right behind the hostess stand, it wasn't very busy ~ 4pm. We ordered frozen marg, Cucumber Collins & Calamari. Looking at the menu we didn't see the fried shrimp & asked the waitress. She said they don't offer it anymore b/c of cross contamination - people with shellfish allergies...whatever. I work for several catering companies & there's a work around but ok - it's just hard to believe a nice restaurant couldn't accommodate that. She came back & said they didn't have a blender & asked if marg could be rocks - sure, ok. When she brought our water he asked if whenever she brought out the calamari to also bring cocktail sauce- (trying to save her a trip) Calamari came, no cocktail sauce. 5-10 mins later she brought his marg rocks & a strawberry drink. We ate almost all of the calamari (only 5-6 small pieces total)but tried to wait for the cocktail sauce. Hubby finished his drink, cocktail sauce came, & now I was waiting for my drink to be remade. Finally, at least 45 mins later I gave up. When she came back to the table (still no drink for me) we just handed her a $20 & said that should cover it & we left. No I'm sorry, I'll get the manager, nothing. Total clueless. It really sucked & I'll never go back nor will I recommend to anyone. I love the ambiance of this place. Such thoughtful touches and great color scheme! Delicious drinks including wine, and good happy hour deals. Beets were fantastic, calamari I would order again, but beware they mostly serve you legs-on pieces. They were out of the redfish which we wanted to try, but we did try their salmon and ceviche. I enjoyed their salmon, but the one bite I had of the ceviche had a bone. My husband had the rest of the dish, which had no bone, so I think I might've had the only bad piece. Beware if you have food allergies. One of our party was allergic to cilantro and another to onion. We WERE VERY CLEAR. My mother in laws dish came out with some cilantro garnish, which she avoided (but still...) and my husbands dish came out with TONS of large chunks of onions in it. Mistakes happen, and that's understandable. The worst thing is there was no real apology. They took it away and took it off the bill. Moving on to dinner - Redfish Grilled Plate - Ahi Tuna Simple - Grilled Ribeye. Bland. Everything was so very bland. Almost everything tasted like it was charred on the same fire at the same time. The steak was undercooked and chewy. It was served almost cold. The mashed potatoes with the steak- out of a box taste. For all the hype - and the price - not it. So very disappointed. New, fresh and absolutely superb! Had an amazing dinner with a good friend. Tried the sea foam margarita to start off. Great drink with salt foam billowing on top. Started with oysters and caviar, shared the pickled shrimp on duck fat glazed saltines. Sounds odd, tastes wonderful. I went for the Redfish with fingerlings and broccolini. He got the haddock. We came during happy hour. The calamari was my favorite item that we ordered. The clams were okay and so were the mussels. The mussels came with giant pieces of pork rinds which did not go with the mussels in my opinion. The clam chowder was good but I really dislike it when soup is served lukewarm instead of hot. We also ordered a kids meal for my daughter. Unfortunately she did not seem to enjoy the grilled cheese as it was mostly burnt. The drink is not included so her OJ was another $3. I asked for a sweet cocktail but the waitress could not recommend one from the happy hour menu.She seemed to be in a bad mood which did not make for a great experience. read more

Went here on 12/30 around 6 to sit at bar and have a bite. Second time for me, first was just after they opened and was meh then. My daughter and I ordered 2 different cocktails, both sickeningly sweet. Smoked fish toast was super strong in fish stank and fish was rubbery, kind of made me gag. Tuna tartare was overly dressed with mayo?? and was goopy, mushy. Big bummer cuz we were craving some freshness. May sound silly, but whole place reeked of fish smell when walking in, kind of like when a co-worker reheats salmon in microwave. Obviously, it's a seafood house, but instead of smelling like oceany-food, it smacked you in the face. 2 stars were for bartenders, both were nice and attentive, tho we did not complain about anything, was too much not up to our liking. I enjoy smaller portions however for the price and sales pitch of saying "shareable" it was a bit deceiving meaning small portions are actually what we got, but hey we pay for experience and service when we go out.
