Disappointing and Dirty - I do my research when it comes to checking out new places to eat in my lovely city. Based on the menu offerings of Poa, I was really excited to try this place. I was in the mood for a healthy smoothie and bowl that would leave me feeling great - however I left feeling very disappointed, insulted and disgusted. I came with my husband on a Saturday at about 1:30. There were two other tables of customers, but otherwise there was just us. We stepped up to the counter, but were still looking over the menu. The clerk asked us what we wanted and seemed annoyed that we weren't quite ready yet - I reiterate, there was no line - We settled on two smoothies (mango bliss and tropical gold) and a bowl (brunch bowl) to share. It was $30 with a $4.50 tip, $34.50 total. We took our number and turned around to find a seat, realizing every table - except the two that were occupied - was dirty. We chose the smallest table near the play area - which was in complete disarray - and my husband went to get a napkin and water so he could wipe the crumbs from our table. As he put a cup up to the water dispenser, he found it to be nearly empty and had to tip it to get even half a cup of water. He brought it back to the table and wiped it down. Our smoothies came about 10 minutes later. One was warm, one tasted like pineapple juice and both were very disappointing. I think the recipes sounded great, but maybe the ratios of ingredients could use some love. Eventually, our food came and the waitress delivered it stone faced. I looked up to say "thank you", but she just turned and walked away. Our bowl actually looked awesome, we went with the salmon and were stoked to try it. We had taken about two bites of our food when another waitress came over to tidy the play area next to our table. She did so by throwing blocks into a bin, the back of which was right next to my seat. She was literally throwing blocks towards us as we were eating. Each block would hit the back of the bin next to my seat before falling into the bin. It was really unpleasant and suddenly any appetite I had left me as I imagined all the dust and germs that were also being wafted our direction along with the blocks. The bowl itself was mostly okay. I found the salmon, poached egg, greens and sauces to be quite yummy. The bed of sweet potatoes on the bottom of the bowl was under cooked and therefore fibrous and watery. I popped into the restroom before we left and there was hair in the sink, a janky ceiling light hung for...aesthetics? and a questionable, albeit offensive, portrait of what appeared to be a diagram of Frida Kahlo's body and every injury she had suffered throughout her life. I don't even know what to say about any of that. Just - wow. I don't typically put so much energy into reviews but I really had my hopes up about this place and I felt not only bummed but insulted as well. I didn't get the sense the staff were happy to be there, I'm not sure what I tipped for as we cleaned our own table - before we ate - , the food wasn't worth the hype and the place was a mess. I might give the crew the benefit of the doubt that maybe they just had a crazy busy brunch rush, but on the whole it's safe to say, I won't be coming back. read more

Oh poa you really seem to be struggling. I returned today after some time away and ordered the smoothie that I've always ordered, the Mango Bliss. It tastes how it always tastes but was 100% not a smoothie. The consistency was that of orange juice. While I wanted to send it back to have a new one made, it seems the person at the counter making the smoothies was struggling and perhaps a little busier than expected. Had I ordered to stay and had time to wait, I would have sent it back. Oh well, maybe we'll try again soon. read more

I enjoy coming here. I usually get the pink Pok open faced sandwich with spring salad on top. I also love the smoothies here. They change with the season but they are all delicious. I wanted so badly for Poa to be great. I have tried it over and over (and over and over etc. etc. etc.) since it has opened. I had such high hopes because it is close and has healthier options, and kid friendly. I have finally come to terms that is just an awful place. After random long closures for construction, missing food that I paid extra for, and horrible/uncaring service, my latest experience was the last straw. I ordered 3 items, only one was out within 5 minutes. The 2 other items were completely forgotten. There were only 2 other customers in the place with us (and I overheard that some of their food was forgotten as well). After reminding one of the blasé staff about the missing items, and another 20 minutes, I finally got the rest of my order. There was a casual "sorry" about the lateness. My food was so completely unsatisfactory that I literally just left it where she put it. I try my hardest to support local businesses but I will never go back to Poa especially when I am treated poorly and the quality is repeatedly horrific. read more

One of Portland's coolest kid-focused musicians on the scene. Yes, there is a kid music scene in Portland, and it's awesome. Kids play, adults drink, and normally it's all very civilized. Today Mo is playing to a crowded house at POA and it's a freakin zoo here. There's about 9 million kids running around. It's loud. I've seen some really crabby parents being snotty at the staff as if they're in charge of all the little rugrats running circles around the place. Give 'em a break, people. Kudos to the calm, cool and collected folks sweating buckets trying to serve the "needs" of tons of families. (I say "needs" because you don't really "need" that cocktail, do you? After chasing your kid around all day, you just really really want it, that's all. If you do in fact need the cocktail, you need to take yourself over to AA and don't be wreckin the family vibe over at POA.) But come on over, bring the kids and have some fun. read more

I've been going here for about 2 years now. I come back for the delicious AND healthy breakfast burrito, something that's very hard to find! Coffee and matcha lattes are good, but everything seems just a tad pricier than it really needs to be, considering prices in similar PDX coffee shops. By biggest gripe though is the staff. Over the 15 ish times I've visited, none of the baristas/cashiers have been welcoming. I have never heard them give a warm greeting or ask if anyone needs help or advice, they go straight to a pretentious-sounding "What can I get you?" I can understand that happening occasionally or maybe even just with a particular person... but I've interacted with a handful of people there. It's frustrating to come to a place that has so much good potential and be dismissed by staff as annoyed that you're even there giving them business. I really liked this cafe. I had been wanting to try it for a while, and luckily my brunch buddy is always up for someplace new. Pretty easy to find on Williams and plenty of street parking. Inside was much larger than I expected, so plenty of seating. They are also very child friendly and have a play area in the back for kids. I really wanted to try their avocado toast, so I went with that a large latte. Both were exceptional. The latte was creamy and the avocado toast (I also topped mine with a fried egg) was delicious. I would definitely order that again. I've only gotten avocado toast a few places and this may be my new fav. Service was also really friendly and there was a kind of long wait for the food, but they were also busy the SUN morning that we went, so understandable. My partner and I tried Poa for the first time this morning. We ordered two smoothies via their online platform which was simple enough, and walked over to pick them up 5 minutes later because we live in the neighborhood. When we arrived, our smoothies were completely watery; there was nothing "smoothie" about it. When I politely asked about the consistency, the employee informed me that they "walked in this morning to see the freezer wasn't working properly so nothing froze" and that "that's as thick as she could make them right now. " I want to be clear in that I have a lot of empathy for this employee- she was doing the best she could given her circumstances. But it occurred to me that if the freezer was "broken" overnight, none of the produce was probably kept at the right, safe temperature...and it was still being served. Not only that, but none of the employees were wearing gloves, and given that we're in a pandemic, I wasn't thrilled about someone's bare hand touching the fruit that went into our drinks. I watched employees touch their faces and adjust their masks, and then go right back to making drinks.. I'm giving two stars here because the employee was kind and wasn't able to make a quality product, and gave us our money back without us even having to ask. I love the fresh/ clean food options here. The "vibes" are okay, I wouldn't come in in sweatpants again... it seems to matter. Their back patio is nice. It has ample seating and shade but it was busy. Their pink garlic beet sauce is delicious. My only thing is, I have an issue with brown/sweet avocado (either its been warmed somehow or its overripe) so 50% of the time I have to throw away my avocado toast. The other 50% of the time its great and tastes completely different, super fresh, but its so hit and miss that I may just buy the pink beet sauce (they do sell it) and then purchase breakfast elsewhere. Docked a star for a past encounter as well as their food packaging. The bowls that usually have some sort of sauce and wet ingredients are put into the wrong type of container - meaning as soon as it's picked up the container is floppy and you can feel the dampness coming through and it's not sturdy at all. Also, def don't supply utensils or have a place to select them when ordering so remember to say something or you'll roll away to work with food but nothing to eat it with, like I did. Order at front counter, get a number and get food brought to table. Good food, nice drink menu. We went during the week and happy hour. I hate crowds, so I would not brave on weekends. I highly recommend the sweet potato bowl with avo added for a filling, satisfying, nutritious breakfast. They make a good golden chai. I would not recommend their mission bowl. My rice was clumpy and dry, the black beans were very dry and some of the sweet potato was still cool on the inside. I definitely felt like I was eating leftovers. Probably if you smother it with the sauce that would help. I really wish they had a vegan SOY FREE option for a sauce.
