Stopped in for a late lunch at Pocket Sushi located in the shopping / office complex on the corner of Hopyard and Stoneridge. The restaurant is actually located on a separate pad in the middle of the center a couple doors down from the Chase Bank. Initially I drove around the retail stores looking for the place, then finally finding it away from the the other restaurants. Read the positive reviews and pictures on Yelp including the menu photos. A little surprised that the menu photos were old and did not reflect at least $2 increase per entree item since their short history. Following Covid guidelines no indoor dining yet but plenty of outdoor tables and chairs. The concept is either build your own mini sushi burrito or chose one off the menu. I ordered the following: Trio Lettuce, cucumber, shrimp tempura, tuna, hamachi, salmon, pickled relish, cilantro 4 stars the rice and the ingredients went together well. $12.75 Red Dragon Lettuce, cucumbers, shrimp tempura , unagi, spicy tuna, avocado, and spicy mayo 4.5 stars the spicy mayo along with the creamy avocado was good. $10.75 Both burritos had toasted sesame seeds as well a a edible thin rice paper wrapper to keep the burrito together. The presentation was excellent with each burrito coming in a labeled box. Plenty of parking in the large shopping center. They also bring your order to your car. read more

I've rarely eaten out during the pandemic, but I've already gone to this place twice, so you know it's the real deal. You can order and pay via phone and then pick up in about 15 minutes. They have wax paper placed outside so that you don't have to get your hands dirty when opening the door. They also only allow one customer inside at a time. I appreciate their covid protocols! The first time, I got the Red Dragon and Osaka Fries. The Red Dragon (spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, unagi, avocado, teriyaki, spicy mayo) was full of flavor and a good amount of spicy for me. I love the crunch! The Osaka Fries are like mickey d fries (skinny and crispy) with takoyaki topping and it was bomb. The price point for it is so good too. The second time, I got the Mango Madness (shrimp tempura, salmon, mango, avocado, cilantro, lemon aioli). I'm a sucker for savory and sweet mixed foods and this one was freshhh. I ordered the shrimp tempura pocket and it was so good! The crunchy tempura paired perfectly with imitation crab and spicy tuna. It was perfectly sized for one person. It was similar to sushi burritos I've had in the past except I felt there was more fillings in the "pocket" rather than any sushi burrito I've had, which was great. I'm a sushi snob, a purist. But I was with a friend and we just finished a hike on the Ohlone trail and had a craving for sushi. We did a quick Google and found several places within a quick driving distance, one of which was Pocket Sushi. When we arrived, we saw the menu and realized it was not traditional sushi and debated whether or not to go elsewhere. I've been craving a handheld sushi burrito style roll similar to sushirrito for a long time now since I don't venture out more than necessary these days. The sushi pokets are interesting with their own twist of sauces for sure. I got the pocketmon and the osaka fries. The inside is clean and well kept, and there're seats if you wish to wait inside or outside (no comment on the dine in possibilities as I didn't confirm). Cashier was nice and the person bagging the order was as well. The pocketmon was good but it wasn't the blow my socks off kind of good. The reason being the miso dressing I'm assuming which was on the top of the roll for my first bite was just that, "the first bite". Don't get me wrong, the shrimp tempura, avacado, crab salad, and salmon were delectable and fresh; but I felt like I got a teaser on the first bite with that savory miso dressing. Leading me to anticipate more of it only to be left high and dry as there was no more beyond that first bite. I was expecting the dressing would still be there even if its a tiny hint of it per bite, but there was none which left me a little unsatisfied. The osaka fries were okay, and interesting. The fries were prepped in a way similar to in-n-out fries where they are crispy, non greasy, but fluffy and dry on the center so that they would do dell when soaked in the sweet sauce put on them. Topped with bonito flakes and the sweet sauce the combo was pretty good, as the plain fries alone felt like something was missing. Overall I'd say price is okay a bit high for the portions,but that is how sushi is and the ingredients were very fresh. The size is about 4in x 5 or 6in containers which fit into a medium sized paper bag. The last time someone offered me pocket sushi, I kindly asked the man how long the salmon was in his pocket and quickly locked my car door. Luckily this isn't that type of pocket sushi! This pocket sushi is kind of like the chubby cousin of the sushi-ritto who seems like they'd be the same thing from the same family, but you soon realize they have their own personality. End of imagery. I ordered one of the spicy sushi pockets which included salmon, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp along with an order of Osaka fries. The pocket itself was very tasty with fresh tasting fish and fun bites with a mix of the different textures of the rice, fish, seaweed and tempura. Personally, I like that the rice is on the outside in contrast to the seaweed wrap of a sushi-ritto because having a soft first bite of rice is nicer than seaweed IMO (small detail, but I appreciated it). The Osaka fries were basically fries garnished with takoyaki sauces and toppings. Pretty good, but didn't necessarily blow me away. The concept of a sushi pocket is so cute! They were easily held in one hand. Perfect for eating on the go. I came here on a Thursday at lunch time. There were some people eating at the tables and some people waiting for their orders, but there was no line. Despite it being lunch hour, service was pretty quick! The menu has both preset options and a build your own option. The prices seem pretty reasonable considering that most of them contain seafood. I opted for one of the preset options since it was my first time. I ordered the California, which includes shrimp tempura, imitation crab, and avocado. The filling was tasty! I liked how the crispy tempura contrasted with the softer texture of the other fillings. The sushi pockets are wrapped in edible soy paper, which helps separate the sticky rice from the (inedible) paper pocket. One of the sides of my sushi pocket didn't have the soy paper. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but it made rolling down the paper a sticky situation. The pocket was a unique and enjoyable meal, but I thought it was a little bit small. Having something easy to eat in the car is always a plus in this Covid-world we are in now and this portable open end mini sushi burrito is the perfect example of that. Although there are a few tables outside, we still felt more comfortable getting it to go. You order inside but they will bring it to your car when it is ready which I think is a smart move to not only minimize your exposure to others but also to not crowd those who decide to eat at the tables outside while you are waiting. Most of their signature pocket sushi comes with shrimp tempura, however, if you have a shellfish allergy, you can substitute with vegetable tempura or customize your own. Customizing allows you to choose one protein with tempura or two proteins for a little more. However if you are okay with the signature ones, it is slightly cheaper for the amount you get. Pricing does average about $8-$9 a pocket but unless you are a hearty eater, you will be satisfied with one to one and a half pockets. I got the lion king ones which is baked salmon meets CA roll, one of the only ones that doesn't come with shrimp tempura since I didn't want anything fried. Hubby customized his with spicy tuna and vegetable tempura which he enjoyed the contrasting texture of crunch with the soft tuna. I'm a fan of this spot. It's a bit like a Sushirrito meets Okinawan Onigiri which is oddly pretty specific. I've only had the Red Dragon here but I've had it twice. I don't appreciate imitation crab so I'm Glad they have a few options that don't include it and the option to substitute real crab for $4 extra. I'm always a bit skeptical at the upgrade since there's no real crab anywhere else on the menu so not sure why they have it on hand, plus an extra $4 push the price to at least $15 and I don't think it's worth it for the size. Anyways, the Red Dragon is yummy and stays together in it's nice "pocket" so you can eat on the go. I can't wait to try more items and the popcorn chicken. I love places like this because I have dietary restrictions and don't have a lot of fast food options. You can grab one of these to go and still eat relatively fresh and healthy ingredients. This place is wonderful. Even though it's not rules, it's probably some of the best sushi out there, I've never had any of the raw fish feel like it's old. It always feels super fresh. I like how it's also a quick bite to eat, and it's really easy to order on the app so all you do is go and walk to the back and pick up your order and out you go. It's similar to those sushi burrito places in the bay area and some airports I've had because I initially thought this is a bento box place from the name. Overall the food is ok but really expensive for what they give you. You definitely don't feel you get money's worth and I'd rather go to a poke place for a more flavorful meal because you'd get a lot more meat. And $4.50 or upgrading to real crab is really pricey. They are hiring and given the high price they are paying (which is ok but it's reflective in their food pricing), I can see why they have to charge so much. The only thing is that we didn't know it was only going to be half a sushi burrito and not the entire roll especially for the price but I guess it did make up for it not being an entire roll since the sushi burrito was wider! He got one of the standard options, while I ordered a custom pocket with salmon and unagi, masago and seaweed salad, miso and gochujang. It cost me $9.50. We sat outdoors as it was a nice afternoon. My pocket sushi was delish! The ingredients were not overly packed, and I enjoyed the texture of the sushi "wrap" - it was strong enough to hold the innards but soft and chewy. Don't judge me but I don't love raw fish (unless it's super fresh) so I ordered the Lion King Pocket the first time I came here and then the Dragon Pocket the second time, which was a week later! Note that we're about a 45 minute drive to Pleasanton, so the fact that we came here twice in the span of two weekends tells you how much I liked it. I like the concept of a pocket over a burrito - it makes it easier to eat. I liked both the Lion King and Dragon. They were both cooked fish but really tasty with the sauce inside. I always go for Pocket Sushi when I want a light meal or craving sushi but want something quick! Each pocket is neatly wrapped with soy paper on the outside, so it's very convenient to eat. Although my 1st experience did feel a bit strange, since it felt like I was biting into a giant sushi roll which feels wrong lol. But I was fully enjoying it after a few bites! The pockets taste very fresh each time, you get a generous amount of fish and the shrimp tempura always comes warm and crispy. I recommend the Red Dragon or Hot Pocket if you like something with a small hint of spiciness and plenty of raw fish - they're my go-tos! I'd say one pocket should satisfy you, but if you're looking for a bigger meal, perhaps order a side to go with it! The gyozas are good!
