Poké Oka is a small poke joint found in Ramona, CA. The inside itself is small, but there are plenty of seats. The lighting could be better, but overall the atmosphere was calming and fit the theme of a poke joint. The staff were super friendly, professional, patient, and willing to help. Whenever I had a question, they answered it to the best of their abilities. Since this was my first time, they walked me through the ordering process. You grab a paper slip and highlight what you want in your poke bowl, this goes for the drinks as well. If you don't want to create your own bowl, you can select an option off of the menu as well. After highlighting what I wanted, I handed it back to the staff and they made sure everything on it was correct before proceeding to make it. Simple and effective, especially for someone like me who deals with anxiety, because I can just take my time and go off to the side. The time it took to make the dish was a bit long, but there were only two workers and the restaurant seems to be family owned. I didn't mind waiting. The poke bowl itself is the most visually appealing poke bowl I have seen so far in SD county. They offer quite a bit of protein and they don't hold back with making sure the container is packed. After shaking it up, it was time to dig in. The rice was cooked perfectly, wasn't mushy and it wasn't hard. The vegetables were fresh, especially the ginger. The sauces were a nice touch and brought everything together. Not one piece of the dish outshined the other, everything worked well together in flavor and texture. My only concern was the protein. About 1/4 of the fish was a bit chewy and had a weird taste, signifying that they weren't as fresh. The other 3/4 of the fish was tender and melted in my mouth as they offered great flavor. It's almost as if maybe older bits of fish were mixed with fresher bits. I didn't feel sick or anything, but it is something crucial that every fish spot needs to be careful with. My drink, Tiger Tea, was great. I purposely asked for 25% sweetness and I could taste the boldness of the tea. The cream, which I believe is coconut, added a nice smooth texture and it didn't overpower the flavor of the tea. It was refreshing, however I think a couple cubes of ice were needed to make the tea colder and keep it cold longer. Overall, Poké Oka may be small but they take pride in their food. The restaurant offers a great variety of dishes and the pricing is fair when it comes to poke. Poké Oka is definitely with other top poke joints in SD county. I will be coming back. I got the three protein bowl, tempura shrimp, spicy tuna and salmon. I couldn't find the protein. It was only one tempura shrimp! ONE !!! For extra protein $4.99!! It's very expensive and ridiculous for so little protein. Good flavor just wish they were not so STINGY!!! I will not be coming back here. We just had the Poke Oka experience a couple days ago. And it was a great one! Not sure how much food we would get, my husband made a couple side dishes at home while I went into town . WOW! The poke bowls were of a generous size and the fresh was super fresh - lots of interesting toppings, all very fresh as well. And the owner, Yvett, is super nice. I can't really recommend anything in particular because we sampled just about everything, and it was all good. I asked for a 2-protein & 3-protein bowl to try all proteins they had at the time - and with a mixture of toppings. I remember seaweed salad, cucumber, carrots, edamame. A few notes for todays online order. I decided to try the Oka Wrap with tofu. I specifically asked in the notes "no mayo or animal sauces", other sauces on side". On "menufy" when I picked up the order the wrap didn't have any sauces on side. I ask gal where was the sauce? She said "eel sauce on the wrap". Got a refund for that. Extremely hit or miss with this establishment. Unfortunately, it's the only poke place in Ramona and, as such, I've eaten here several times. The experiences have been good, bad, and everything in between. One of the times we ordered online, we received a call informing us that all of our protein choices were out of stock and that they only had three of their usually extensive list to choose from. While this caused a bit of difficulty, the staff were very friendly and remedied the situation satisfactorily. Another time we ordered, we received the correct ingredients in the bowl, except there was no sauce; just dry ingredients. On another occasion, the fish didn't seem as fresh as it usually does. We trusted--against our better judgment--the standards of the restaurant, however both my partner and I wound up with a stomach ache. These bad experiences are sandwiched with very positive ones, so it's hard to say for sure what you'll get on any given day. Today was another sub-par experience. The picture shown is of a bowl ordered with not only the regular helping of avocado, but also the paid "extra avocado" option. Two little strips of avocado hardly seems like "avocado + extra avocado," especially when there's an upcharge for it. My partner's bowl had absolutely no avocado in it, despite ordering the regular helping. In addition, while the takeout bowls are usually bursting at the seams with food, this time both bowls were filled to just below the lip. Luckily, the food tasted fresh today (as it usually does) but the experience again added to the hit or miss nature of this establishment. Management, if you're reading this review: please train whoever was working today to follow order instructions accurately. Every ingredient ordered should make it into the bowl, and I feel particularly slightly that I paid extra for a double portion of something that I barely got any of. I ordered a 3 protein pokè bowl a couple of miso soups, delivered by DD. The miso soup was delicious and had plenty of tofu. A bargain at $2.50 a bowl for about 8 ounces. However the pokè bowl was a different story all together. The salmon was cooked all the way through and both the salmon and ahi tuna were chewy, grainy and salty. Not fresh and definitely frozen prior to being defrosted. The white rice was also chewy, dry and not edible. They were out of two proteins I wanted to try, but they still had about 8 more options. They had Eel as well as Eel sauce, which are two of my favorites! They also had two kinds of steak and tofu, great for that One Friend that doesn't like raw food/fish/places with less than 3 different proteins on the menu. Like another reviewer mentioned, the portions are a bit less than poke bowl places in Mira Mesa and Convoy. But Poké Oka is an oasis in a metaphorical poke desert- the next closest poke place is over 20 minutes drive. I am more than willing to pay extra to stay in town, and eat poke that tastes fresh.
