Smokers in the bar while we were waiting was very irritating to my eyes & lungs. The only thing that saved me was standing in the open doorway to outside (it was balmy) for 45 minutes. I would have given another star if there was NO smoking. I was not the only one bothered by the smoke. They were quite busy on this Tuesday evening. Dinner was very good, both food & service. I was there with a group of 12. My Shrimp Ronaldo was very good & came with a nice salad for $12.79. My friends said their food was also very good. Visited Pomplilios for the first time on Sunday. Love, love , love! The food is wonderful, generous entrees (we could've have shared the tortellini) and the service was helpful and courtesy without lingering. For two entrees with salad and bread and two crafts beers came to $50 with tip. Not too bad for a great meal with plenty to take home for lunch tomorrow. Overall Pompilios was a enjoyable dining experience. Cant wait for warmer weather so we can enjoy a meal on the charming patio. We're looking forward to visiting again and again . read more

I order the Eggplant parmigiana and it was so disappointing - tasteless 3 inch circles of eggplant that were hard to bite into and there was no cheese on top. I had the eggplant before at Pompilios in September 2017 and it was soft, creamy, tasty, very good like eggplant should be. What I had tonight seemed like something frozen that came in a box and had gone past its expiration date. I will never order eggplant there again. read more

This was the second time we had the wonderful Tracy and really enjoyed her! She has great energy and is so friendly. We will be requesting Tracy the next time we come in. Pompilio's has been riding on the shirt tails of "Rain Man" for way too many years now. Their prices and are seriously out of balance regarding the cost/value. Take the Chicken Marsala, for example, which is what I ordered. $16.79 for teeny 3 ounce chicken breast just isn't right. Sure, the dish came with a large serving of pasta, but, the pasta can't cost but a few pennies when purchased in bulk. My wife ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. I questioned the server about the size of the meatballs... "Oh, they're big!" was the response. What was served was 2 meatballs that weren't much larger than a golf ball. How disappointing... and again the price/value ratio was ridiculously out of whack. Good bye Pompilio's... ya' won't be seeing us ever again. read more

I am always excited to eat at Pompilio's. The chicken and cheese tortellini San Luci is probably the best pasta dish I have ever had. The house red wine isn't too bad either. Make sure you take a big appetite with you when you go because they don't skimp out on portions. read more

If you want authentic Italian food in NKY, don't pass up Pompilio's! Located a few blocks from Newport on the Levee, this is by far the biggest bang for your buck, especially for Italian. The portions are perfectly-sized: not too big, not small, and priced right. Our service was fast, which was a pleasant surprise given that we were there on a Friday night during Restaurant Week. Cool atmosphere in the bar area. It's like a time capsule. I'd definitely recommend hanging out at the bar rather than dining in. The food is just OK to me. They do have some vegetarian options, but they are limited, and not particularly exciting. It was a lot less impressive than I thought it would be. They had gluten free pasta, which was alright, but not worth the $3 upcharge. I have to be gluten free and dairy free for health reasons, and I only found one thing I could eat on the menu. It seemed like everyone at our table finished their food easily, which is unusual for an Italian restaurant (portions tend to be more generous) they had a great wine and drink selection, and a wide variety of foods, but they are not very gluten free or vegan friendly. I love this place. My sister had her rehearsal dinner here back in like 1999 because it was where her and her husband's first date was, and that is my earliest memory of this place. I remember loving it - they have a patio out back that is great for that kind of thing, and the food was so good. I have been consistently going since then (let me be clear, I was like 12 in 1999) and loved it. Their sauce is amazing (I buy it at Remke's a lot - I need to get some when I'm back home because it is delicious) both meat and marinara and their pasta is delicious. One complaint (a big one for my husband) is that they do Coke by the glass bottle. And it's kind of pricey. But honestly, it's worth coming for the food and I like the cute little bottles. It is really cute inside - kind of close together, really full, and this old "Italian" feel that has that great we painted it to look this way feel that I love so much. The booths are super comfy if you can get one. Parking is a mess - be careful. It's a thin lot and people park crazily. I suggest parking on the street if you can. The pasta is great - their tortellini is my favorite and I always have leftovers. The bread they serve is always fresh and delicious. And it's well priced. A good Italian staple. read more

My wife and I were in town for the weekend and took the advice of a friend of ours who's a local to the area to go and eat at Pompilios. We had a reservation for 6:30pm on a Saturday evening and from start to finish our experience was outstanding. We were seated right away and greeted by Joyce and Mickey who were our team for the evening. They were both so kind and tremendous job. My wife had the Chicken Alfredo and I had the Lasanga and both were tremendous. It puts all other Italian restaurants we've ever had to shame. Would highly recommend! read more

Back in Newport's darker days my dad brought Mom to this great little restaurant. It's been a family favorite for too many years to count. It was my favorite date night and family night location for nearly a decade. It's also the place that scene in Rainman with the phone book and the waitress was filmed (you can find all kinds of photos and posters on the walls). One night my dad whispered to me that Cincinnati Bengal's coach Marvin Lewis was just heading out after his meal and I looked up just in time to spot a tall dark frame with a friendly face before he exited, pretty cool! This family owned, historic and slightly kitschy location has great food, reliable servers (many who have been there for years) and a really great if crowded bar area. Me and my Guess waited at our table with no server until I flagged one down and asked if we could be waited on. Then when picking up my fork to use it. I found incrusted food on the handle. The next set of utensils were the same that I got. When we received our food the lasagna noodles were cool and doughy the portions have also shrank considerably from my past visits. She was sitting for a good 10 minutes in between greeting us and giving us 'a minute' to look for appetizers. She got slower as the night went on. As for the food...I ordered fettucine alfredo with grilled chicken. The sauce tasted like the cheapest one on the store shelf and I MIGHT have had 5 slivers of chicken on the noodles. Not sure why I decided to order dessert after the waitress was quick to tell us that they are not homemade, they order from a food distributor, but I ordered the plain cheesecake. Went here out of curiosity after reading about it's use in several films as a location. The food is good and the ambiance is nice. I'm super-patient and have low standards when it comes to servers, but even I think they are a little slow and could be more attentive. The last time I went, I ate my entire meal without a drink because the server forgot. I think it's fun and has an interesting past; unfortunately, I think this is one of those places that relies on its reputation and the idea that they are "the best" and therefore slips up in certain areas. The parking is kind of a nightmare; I'd actually like to park further away and walk than have a battle for a space. All in all, I'd go back if someone said, "Hey, let's go to Pompilios." I'd take out-of-towners if I had a reservation just because it's a fun place. I probably wouldn't risk a large party or special occasion like a birthday. read more

This restaurant serves consistently good food. My only complaint is the tiny bottles of Coke products. I would rather have a fountain drink. This place hasn't changed in years and it doesn't need to. I married in to an Italian family and they love the place. We spend the summers on the bocci ball courts. The menu has been updated to include some sandwiches. This place is great! When I go, I usually get their combo platter which has a little bit of everything on it. The price is great too. The only drawback is there is usually a hefty wait on Friday and Saturday night and the waiting area will be slammed too. Very nice atmosphere, good service and they love to tout that the "Rain Man" was partially shot there. read more

Fabulous meatballs and a light sweet sauce over pasta along with a well better than average house Chianti made for a lovely Saturday lunch. You don't stay in business this long without great food, friendly service, and good prices. This was an ok meal. I got a caesar salad, which was very good. Love the shaved parmesan. Then I got bolognese with spaghetti noodles. I got a sausage onthe sidewith some garlic bread. The sausage had very good flavor and a little spice. However, it didn't have a casing and I'm fairly certain it was boiled. Just a weird texture. If it had been grilled to get the exteriors bit firmer it would have been great. The garlic bread was very good. The bolognese was a pretty large disappointment. Very, very little flavor. My god salt and pepper are cheap. That's not the place to skimp. It didn't feel like a bolognese either. Huge chunks of tomato and what seemed to be just plain ground beef. Seemed like lots of cream and I don't think there was any wine. A good bolognese is usually pretty straightforward and this didn't seem to either have the right components or was improperly composed. The marinara the sausage came in tasted better. I can't tell you how much I wanted to like this place. This city is arguably the worst metropolitan city for Italian food. I'll give them another chance, in case this was just an off night. read more

I had high expectations because of locals telling how good this place is. I was rather disappointed in the food. I had sampler platter with lasagna, sausage, eggplant and ravioli and a meatball. The sausage was good the lasagna was maybe a 2 on a ten scale. The sauce had zero flavor. The bread they bring is like eating just plain white bread. This is not my idea of a good Italian restaurant. Best Italian food in the Greater Cincinnati area. You can go to Brio's down the street for twice as much and half the quality but I wouldn't recommend it. Best marinara sauce in the city with great bread. I recommend the Italian sampler. The place has a lot of history and has been open for decades. It was actually in the movie Rain Man in the "toothpicks" scene. Overall dynamite place to eat with a bill around 30 bucks for two people. read more

I hadn't been there in years and years, and decided to give it another try. For dinner I tried their sampler (lasagna, eggplant parm, sausage, meatball, 2 ravioli's). It was average, at best. The eggplant was mushy and everything is lumped together and covered with a red sauce that's too thin. And forget about the house/side salad. It's just some day-old iceberg with 1 small cherry tomato and 1 slice of cucumber. I know it's a long-time neighborhood staple, but that's really all that keeps it going. If this place was new it wouldn't last 6 months. To be fair though, the interior does have a nice old Newport charm to it, and the prices are reasonable. I've worked in, and created menu items for, half a dozen Italian restaurants in Cincy, Lexington and Chicago. I was disappointed and can't say that I'll be back. read more
