Pulled pork, smoked chicken wings, coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Not shown, the empanadas.

We stopped into Poogan's Smokehouse on East Bay Street for an early dinner on a recent trip to Charleston. It was pleasantly quiet when we arrived, but it filled up quickly as the evening went on -- a good sign. The food here is genuinely delicious and, best of all, reasonably priced for downtown Charleston. We shared a plate that came with pulled pork and smoked chicken wings, along with coleslaw and sweet potato fries. We also started with the smoked rib and charred corn empanadas as an appetizer. Everything was outstanding -- the meats were tender, smoky, and well-seasoned without being overdone. Their coleslaw is my favorite among the options; it's creamy with just a hint of heat that keeps it interesting. The sweet potato fries were a nice touch too. We had our eye on the pork belly burnt ends, but they were sold out that night -- understandable for a popular item. My only real nitpick is that they don't offer brisket, but with everything else tasting so good, it's hard to complain much. Our waitress, Brady, was fantastic -- friendly, attentive, and really helpful with recommendations. Service like that makes a big difference. If you're in the mood for quality smoked BBQ without the tourist-trap markup, Poogan's Smokehouse is a great choice. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town. Highly recommended!

Poogan's Smokehouse is a solid BBQ spot and I'd definitely come back. We ordered the family meat platter, which came with two included sides, so we went with two orders each of mac and cheese and collard greens. It was a great value and more than enough food to share. The pulled pork was a little dry, and the collard greens were much too salty for my taste, but everything else was excellent. They also have a creative cocktail menu that was reasonably priced and worth trying. The service was friendly and attentive, and the loft style dining room with its industrial barbecue feel gave the restaurant a fun atmosphere. Overall, a really enjoyable meal with just a couple of small misses.

I will be full for days! Ordered their creatures Bloody Mary, with pulled pork slider, a rib and bacon. This should have been my meal, it was plenty. Ordered nachos and shrimp tacos. Nacho were huge and very good pulled pork. Shrimp tacos were good, side chips weren't great. Not sure why? Service was amazing and loved their ambiance!

My family had lunch at Poogan's Smokehouse this afternoon. We were seated right away and had a really nice waitress. She was very attentive and made sure we had a good experience. My kids shared the chicken tenders, Mac and cheese and collard greens dish. It was a good portion and the food was tasty. My husband ordered the carnitas tacos and he enjoyed them. He had the potato salad as his side. It was very tasty. I ordered a salad with smoked turkey with ranch dressing. The salad was huge! My whole family helped me with it and we hardly made a dent. The turkey was delicious. There are a few Poogan's restaurants. I have not been to the others, but the Smokehouse is a solid BBQ and Southern restaurant.

Great food and quiet lunch spot! The chicken was moist and the ribs fell off the bone tender. Highly recommend. They had three sauce options, mustard, sweet, and spicy. A mixture of the mustard and spicy was a perfect combination.

Wow. Everything was delicious, I ordered a smoked old fashioned - I did expect a little more from this but it was still good. Ordered the pulled pork, Mac and cheese and sweet potato fries and this was everything and more than I wanted from a BBQ restaurant. Delicious bark on the pulled pork, service was great and it is a modern western vibe inside.

I really wanted to like Poogan's Smokehouse, but this one was a letdown from start to finish. The night started off a little rough when I ordered one of their mocktails and was told they were out. Not the end of the world, just disappointing. We moved on and ordered the honey cornbread as an appetizer, making it clear we wanted it out before the meal. Instead, it showed up after our entrees, which pretty much defeated the point. For the main course, we ordered the smoked turkey and the pulled chicken. The turkey was extremely dry, to the point it was hard to eat, and the pulled chicken came out cold. We also had sweet potato fries on the side, which were cold as well, and the mac and cheese tasted like something straight out of a school cafeteria. To top it off, once we finished eating, we sat for over twenty minutes waiting for our check while our server wandered around the restaurant. The only reason this place gets two stars instead of one is the pricing. If the food and service matched the price point, it could be a solid value. Unfortunately, based on our experience, this is a place I would recommend skipping.

This was right around the corner and we arrived on a Sunday night. It was a bit quiet after the hectic weekend so it was easy to get a table. So- unfortunately they were out of many things due to late hour. Note to self- next visit- go early! My partner, a bbq aficionado - loved this spot! He raved about his bbq, and all side dishes. Wait staff prompt and friendly. Dessert pictured and amazing!

Food was cold and collards were inedible. Mac and cheese was equivalent to the frozen industrial pans of mac.

We were craving bbq and we definitely came to the right place! Kicked off dinner with an order of cornbread and old fashioned mimosas. Amy got the pulled pork tacos, Meg had the half slab of ribs and I had wings. The portion sizes were so big we all shared and had leftovers. The dry rub on the wings and ribs was great! The sides were also amazing: legit collard greens with tangy vinegar base and big chunks of bacon. The Mac n cheese had a homemade béchamel sauce that was not too cheesy, and the Austin-style black beans and Brussels sprouts were also very tasty. Thank you, Abby, for your impeccable and friendly service. What a nice dinner! We will definitely be back.

Portions are big enough to share for two if you do the three meat platter. We did that and ordered one extra side, we were a bit sad they were out of the ribs but ordered turkey instead which was surprisingly my favorite meat on the platter after all. Tender and flavorful. Then pork and then the chicken. All very good. Sauces were just ok in my opinion. The waitress was very kind but not out of the way best service ever type of service. Restaurant is dark and smells of the delicious meats. Lots of space. Lemonade wasn't good.. tasted like powdered lemonade, that'd be my only complaint about the quality.

Awesome environment, sat near the bar. Playlist was great all night. Kaley was great behind the bar.

We stopped in for lunch during the week and were seated right away. Our server was helpful in making suggestions. When traveling, we enjoy trying regional foods, and this is where we experienced Carolina BBQ sauces. :) We split a 3-meat platter, which was more than enough. That allowed us to try different meats and sides. The mac n cheese was really good...well, everything was really good. If you like a little bit of heat, I recommend the sweet bbq sauce with a touch of the spicy. It's a great blend. (And I'm a fan of the sauces!)

The restaurant seems quite popular as evidenced by the line at the relatively off hours of Friday at 2:00PM. Fortunately, the queue moved expediently and we were ordering in less than 10 minutes. The service model is standard in that you wait on line, order your meats, and seat yourself. The dining room and outdoor patio at Lewis are very large and provide ample seating. The ambience is clean but still hews classic with wood accents and butcher paper serving as your plate. We ended up sitting at the bar as we wanted to enjoy one of the many well curated local beers Lewis offers on tap. Bonus points for having bar height high chairs for our little one. We opted to sample four meats and three sides. This amount of food proved perfect for the two of us and our hungry 14 month old. All of the meats carried a discernible smoky taste and aroma with meltingly tender textures and ample seasoning. We enjoyed the meaty pork ribs and tender brisket the most, but everything we sampled had merit. The meats do not need sauce, strictly speaking, though you'd be remiss to pass on Lewis' Tex-Mex infused tasty condiments, which complement all of the meats rather well. The sides also were excellent. The justifiably famous sweet and slightly spicy corn pudding acted as the star, with generous helpings of tangy collards and not excessively creamy potato salad rounding out our meal. Our total for food was less that $60, a very decent value for the quality and quantity. While ultimately a counter service joint, the service here was friendly enough both at the checkout and bar to warrant mention. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be doing what they were doing and treated us kindly. Overall, for tasty fare, good value, and warm service, this is an easy 5 star rating for barbecue in Charleston.
