I was therefore excited to see Poplandia's sign when I was wandering round this cool neighbourhood The lady was very kind in giving samples to try and decide on my choice. Sadly, they had run out of caramel and I couldn't therefore do my usual Chicago mix - half caramel, half cheese. I left with 2 bags to share with the girlfriend Just as I was walking out, I spotted their board of specials which they produce from time to time. If this review were about their salespeople, it would be 5 stars. Very nice people. However, this review is about their popcorn, advertised as "small-batch, artisanal gourmet popcorn...using the freshest, premium ingredients, and sourcing locally, when possible." I purchased the Chile Relleno and the Sea Salted Carmel. Here are a sample of the ingredients of which I'll post photos of: * Partially hydrogenated soybean oil * Hydrogenated Coconut and cottonseed oil * Artificial colors and flavors These just aren't ingredients that I expected or wanted. They're not considered - by most people - to be artisanal, gourmet, fresh, or premium ingredients. Yes, the popcorn tasted good. Let's start off with...I am a BIG popcorn eater/lover. I go to any gourmet popcorn place I can usually find when travelling and I usually buy bags and bags to take home, so...I kind of know my popcorn. I first walked by this place when it was closed and was excited to come back the next day to grab some popcorn. (I didn't know what flavors they had) I came back in the morning, saw that they had ice cream and baked goods. My wife and friend decided to buy the smores brownie and a cupcake. I am not a big sweets fan but they seemed to enjoy it. (Hence why I am even giving a 2 star) Onto the popcorn...they didn't have a large selection which surprised me.. I believe there was maybe 6 or 7 flavors. Some flavors were the regular ones you could find at any other place like white cheddar, salt n vinegar.. I asked for a sample of the garlic cheese, the thai PBJ, and salt n vinegar. I didn't mind the thai PBJ, but like I said before I am not a big sweets fan but it was good. At the end of it all I got a small bag of garlic cheese popcorn because it was not bad. This is where my review goes sour...I ended up getting the small bag as mentioned before and when she placed it in my hand..it was like..the size of my fist. In my mind I was like..REALLY? 4 bucks for basically 3 handfuls of popcorn? You got to be kidding me. I was exactly correct on how much popcorn I got because when I started eating it..I finished it so fast because there was barely any in it. Sorry Poplandia, you need to take a note from Toronto Popcorn Company or Kernels because this was not worth my money. Awesome new addition to 23rd! Stumbled into this gem of a place right before they closed so there weren't many flavors left. But we did try all the ones they had. My faves were sour cream and chive, and cheddar. There was the standard ones too - caramel, some spicy one i can't remember the name, plain, etc. The one i wanted to try was the puppy chow, but they only had crumbs. Flavor with the biggest window but empty = best flavor. I NEED to come back for that puppy chow. It was a little pricey, but hey - I have kids who love popcorn, so we left with 2 bags full. It was worth it in my book, because even after 3-4 days, it still had a crunch to it and tasted great. Granted, I kept the bag sealed and ate it so fast I don't think chewing was involved, but still. This was really an unexpected find and I am so glad we stumbled upon it, on our way to Salt and Straw. The shop shares space with a cupcake shop, but we were there for popcorn!! There were 4 savory flavors and 6 sweet flavors to try out. We were able to sample all of them, if we wanted to. I tried the truffle but felt it was a little too overpowering. I liked the lavender one but really enjoyed the smores. This was such a treat! I purchased a small bag of the smores and a small bag of the salt and vinegar, which was already bagged near the cashier. There were a lot more flavors for purchase on this side of the store. Let's begin with a truth: I absolutely adore popcorn. Now I'm not talking a passing fancy; my friends would tell you that I have a passion for popcorn that borders on the need for an intervention. And, because I love it so much, I am a both a discriminating connoisseur of the snack as well as a damn decent popper myself. Now this is going to hurt. It pains me to type this (especially because typing actually sounds like the popping of corn--I bet you never noticed that, did you?). Today I visited Poplandia (Love, love, love the name) to procure some gifts to send across the country for Christmas. And my experience was sadly not good. At risk of seeming Grinchy, I'm going to continue. Because I was so disappointed that I nearly cried. Not only were they out of several varieties (um, you're a retail store and it's Christmas--not having the widest variety of choices is lame, at best) but the popcorn was underwhelming. Regardless I bought 5 different flavors to send to family--folks who know of my love of the corn and my devotion to all things Portland. I was excited to spread my corny love across the country. And then I made my mistake. I assumed the "classic/butter" was super special like the other flavors I bought as gifts. Without tasting it (bangs head on desk) I bought a gallon (bangs head on desk again). I thought I'd excitedly sneak handfuls along with my 11 yr. old son and share in the yumminess I was about to share. And WOW, it was literally awful. This "butter flavor" actually tasted worse than the popcorn you get at a Blazer game. And, as my son pointed out, it cost even more! On my way to the store from the east side all the way over to NW Portland during rush hour I called the store to ask if they popped their corn in hydrogenated oils (I was assured that they pop their corn in 100% coconut oil) since I read another reviewer's comments about it. But this popcorn tasted exactly like hydrogenated butter-flavored oil, and the kernels weren't even that fat! Ok, Kelly...deep breath. This was the second time I'd visited Poplandia. And, of course, I'll have to go back and try it one last time. But I'm just so sad that the quality of this "gourmet popcorn" in this land of artisan, gourmet everything is so not gourmet. The flavors seem unique, which I think is the main allure of this snack spot. But the popcorn at Living Room Theater spanks this stuff. Same with the popcorn from A Box Social. Even the corn from my kitchen would reign supreme in a pop-off with Poplandia. Which again, is terribly sad. I hope it gets better. I really do. Until then I now have a $14 bag of corn that I wouldn't waste my carb count on. Good thing it will make great packing material for those lingering Christmas gifts. read more

If you like popcorn... This is the place for you. I have a father who loves popcorn almost as much as he loves his children. So when I saw I popcorn shop in Portland, I had to walk in. They had a row of popcorn bins and little cups for tasting. A small menu on the wall to let you know all the different flavors that may not have been displayed. Coconut curry, sriracha, cheese, caramel, candies, berry, all sorts of adventures. The lady let us try so many different flavors, with no pressure to buy. So we tried them all. We told her that we would go walking around and would return before we left the area. She said she understood and that not many people want to walk around with bags and bags of popcorn. We actually intended to go back, but most businesses would probably think that when people say something like that they don't mean it, but this lady never let it show. She was nice and relaxed. Confident in her popcorn. We went walking around and returned before we went to our car to drive back to the hotel. Portland is full of foodie adventures. The popcorn was something nice to be able to take home. It stayed fresh and crisp for days. The lady also introduced me to an app called Perka. Which is basically a frequent buyer card app that virtually keeps track of all those little pieces of card stock that usually get lost in my purse. read more

The Good: I love popcorn! Poplandia serves up a variety of curious flavors including spicy Thai PB&J and Three-Cheese Garlic. All are quite tasty and represent their flavors well. You can't go wrong with the classic salted caramel! The staff is wonderful too -- they love to chat you up and provide samples while you're in the store. The Bad: The popcorn I sampled didn't taste as crisp as I would've liked. Not the biggest deal, but the prices are borderline ridiculous. Have to give this place a slightly higher rating than the cupcake store adjoined to it because although I came for cupcakes, I left with kettle corn for my friends! The popcorn flavors were all really unqiue, and the apple cinnamon that I ended up picking actually had slices of apple in it, which was pretty cool! I think the price point of this kettle corn was a little more reasonable than the Saint Cupcakes, but it's definitely still a "splurge" food and more expensive than I'd be comfortable spending often. read more

We found this place just right when we head upstairs for the tea lounge- we had raspberry and salty caramel popcorns ( small) for $4 and it was just THE BOMB!!! I normally don't like gourmet/flavored popcorn. I'm not entirely sure why. I mean, I love popcorn and I love cheese, but I despise cheese popcorn. So when I visited this shop for the first time, I expected to stick with plain, good ol' fashioned salt and butter popcorn. I had no intention whatsoever of getting a special flavored popcorn...but then I tried one of their chocolate-covered popcorns and was blown away by how delicious it was. I can't remember what it was called (either Puppy Chow or S'Mores), but it had popcorn covered with hardened chocolate and marshmallow bits. I bought one bag of the chocolatey popcorn and one bag of plain popcorn with butter. Needless to say, I pretty much ignored the butter popcorn and spent the better part of the afternoon chowing down on the chocolate popcorn instead. Before you visit Poplandia, you should know in advance that they rarely carry plain butter popcorn. This is more of a place for unique, candy-type popcorn. Even if the sound of that doesn't interest you, I'd advise you to sample some flavors anyway. You might be pleasantly surprised by how good they are. read more

If anyone knows me, they know I am obsessed with popcorn...especially the salty savory flavors. I got to try a few, but the one I liked most was Black Truffle and Sea Salt. My favorite snack is popcorn so this place is BLISS! Very small little store tucked within NW 23rd and paired with Saint Cupcake. I visited during their birthday weekend and it was crazy busy. They gave people the option of voting on the new flavors (cake batter won!) and there were plenty of samples to be had. You can try any of the flavors and there is a whole wall of bags ($4) to take home. These are super fresh and the flavor selection is pretty crazy. Decided to pop in because as my friend and I were walking by, the smell was incredible. We had to walk in. To our surprise, it was split between a cupcake and popcorn joint. Got a few samples. They even have seasonal popcorn made with pumpkin (for all you closet PSL lovers) and stout beer. So neat! There's about 5-7 different types of popcorn. I settled on hickory and Gouda, and garlic cheese. SOOOOO GOOD. Have you ever had a potato skin with sour cream, bacon bits, and all the words? This is what that tasted like. Hickory and Gouda- OH MAN. So amazing. Bits of the hickory tasted like bacon with an after scent/taste of a subtle maple syrup. Kind of similar to a glazed piece of bacon. The Gouda was sharp enough to complement the hickory, but neither were overpowering each other. So so so good. Garlic and cheese, what not to like about it? It's garlic and frickin' cheese. The cheese taste like a white cheddar. Combined the two together and you get a match made in heaven. Mix and match your own or pick a flavor prepackaged. It's a clean, cheerfull, cozy interior....more like an enclosed food booth slightly underground, which adds to the elven charm of the ambience! Light and airy interior and does offer a few chairs at a small bar that looks out the window to a tiny whimsical fairy land view in a garden pot next to the stairs which lead back up to street level. There were many flavors of gourmet popcorn to choose from which included both sweet and savory flavors and also a vegan option. I decided on the bourbon maple pecan and I got the open top $4. Bag wich is about 3 or 4 cups of popcorn. It was delish but if I had a complaint is that I was expecting candied pecans to be in there along with the maple-ey popcorn, like a fancy cracker-Jack type of thing and there was nary a pecan to be had....maybe it was just a bum bag...despite this the popcorn was tasty! Poplandia was great for two reasons: the wonderful service and the tasty popcorn. We tried 5 different flavors (even though the lady said we could try them all if we wanted!) and they were all pretty good. The s'mores popcorn was drizzled in chocolate and had pieces of graham cracker. Yum! We eventually bought the sharp white cheddar popcorn and ate almost half of it on our way back home. My boyfriend and I discovered this WONDERFUL little shop while wandering down 23rd about a month ago. Intrigued by the incredible smell wafting out from the place, and the idea of a variety of popcorn flavors we wandered in for a look. The lady who attended to us, Sara(h?), was super nice! She offered us all sorts of free samples and told us about the shop! We left with three different bags and huge smiles on our faces. Their popcorn is DELICIOUS!! My favorite so far is the Chile Relleno, but my boyfriend is particularly obsessed with the Buttery Sea Salt Caramel popcorn! They also have a double cheese which is incredible and a parmesan garlic that doesn't kid around about the garlic!! If heaven had a food court this place would be there. Hands down. GO TO POPLANDIA! Poplandia is such a hidden gem in Portland! The two owners are such nice ladies and really make the experience fun. You can try all flavors and they have great prices. They also have great gift options for holidays or tailgating (Ducks and Beavers popcorn). We had some great gourmet flavors at our wedding (truffle, Parmesan garlic and sea salt and vinegar) and people couldn't get enough! The owners were so nice and made mini bags with ribbons that were our wedding colors. My all time favorite flavor is the candy cane! They use their wonderful caramel popcorn and toss with melted white chocolate and candy cane bits - to die for!!! Love this place!!! read more

Delicious! My sister's boyfriend worked at a place where Poplandia catered to them and he brought us some of the cinnamon apple churro popcorn and WOW it was heavenly!! I could not stop eating it. I really enjoyed it and the depth of flavor was great. There were some bites that were really apple-y, some were really cinnamon-y, and some that were both. I finished most of the bag by myself (which I am not proud of).... But, I highly recommend trying some of the popcorn.
