I moved to this area about 2 years ago, so recently I told myself I would drop in and grab a bite just to see how the food was. To be fair the establishment was very nice and clean, they had hand sanitizer in multiple places throughout. The customer service was very nice, and they patiently waited on me to decide on what I wanted. I finally made a decision: a 6 piece lemon pepper combo with seasoned fries, a large philly steak with mushrooms added combo with seasoned fries, and for dessert a slice of strawberry cheesecake & pecan pie. First off, the order was wrong, they left off my seasoned fries for my philly sandwich, the chicken wings were hard to chew, and the sandwich tasted more like grease and onions than anything else. Absolutely disgusting!! I haven't been here in a few years since I'm no longer working in the warehouse district and I decided to stop by since I was passing by. Entire new crew. No Cajun fries. Just some regular soggy fries with seasoning salt. Chicken Philly was horrible. Had no flavor. Ordered Honey Hot wings, I simply threw them in the garbage. Great value. Salty burger. Deep fried potato chips bought from a brand called "Homemade". Really warm inside. Canned mushrooms. I've had this bookmarked a long, long time, but avoided it because for some reason I remembered reading that there weren't many tables and they filled up fast. I recently learned that wasn't entirely true and lunch for me today was 1:30 which made it perfect. They were still about 75% full and there were more tables than I imagined, but I got seated no problem. I was impressed that there were two people taking orders (one helping decide and one taking payments) so the line moved really fast. I had trouble reading the menu because I have good eyesight, but I'm not an eagle or a hawk. I do read and write better than a bird though. I'd already made up my mind that I wanted a burger. When I got to the counter, I told her I can't read the signs and she handed me a menu and I chose Swiss and mushroom. I asked her about the homemade chips because Thomas said they are frozen. She admitted that they are, but they do fry them. Now homemade means you make them where you live, which we all know is too literal. The online Merriam Webster says they are homemade if prepared on the premises. I told her if they are bought frozen, they aren't homemade. She said they are homemade because the company they buy from is called "Homemade". Imagine that. I couldn't find the brand online but I did find an ice cream company called "Homemade". It was warm in there. 85* outside and both their thermostats were reading 79*. Granted the door was open 25% of the time, that's only 6* cooler. That may be a temporary problem, don't know. Wonder if it will be 94* inside on a 100* day. Something to think about if you need a break from the heat. The first bite of my burger was full of flavor and very good. I was impressed. As I ate it, the salt became more and more overbearing. The chips were heavily salted as well. I was barely able to finish, but my heart sure got its salt intake for the month. One more dash of salt, and it would be totally inedible. The mushrooms were definitely canned which doesn't work well on a burger. The "Homemade" chips were fairly good, but some were soft and chewy. Good, not great. Heritage Tavern truly does make their own chips if you're interested, and they did impress me. All in all, I'm only at 3 stars for this experience. The reason I decided to go 4 stars is because the value was so exceptional. I bought a mushroom Swiss burger, chips, and drink for $8.61 after tax. Considering the going rates at Burger King, this was way better than fast food. There are better burgers in town for this price, but from a fast food priced perspective, this was definitely above average quality for the money. That's the only reason I value it as 4 stars. I will return and try the philly and the gyro. 12/2/16 Ordered the philly and the rueban. We beat the crowd and our sandwiches took over half an hour to make. The line got backed up to the door. People behind us in line were getting their food and I went up to the counter to stand in the way so they'd have a little pressure to get mine done. They were well staffed and working hard, but they seemed so unorganized, inefficient, and just running around lost in total chaos. Oh eM Gee!! This place is great! I had someone ask me this morning if I had ever been to Pop's Deli. They said that someone told them the gyros were great. So, I read a couple of reviews (Thank you, Kristi W) and asked my lunch buddy if he had ever been. His answer was no but luckily he like me LOVES food and trying new places. He threw his lunch in the frig and said he was in. The chicken gyro and homemade chips were fantastic! Everything that was brought out from the kitchen looked great though. By the time we left, there wasn't an empty seat in the place. If you are crunched for time, they do take call-in orders. We will definitely be going back. Great sandwiches! I have tried three items from their menu, and each one was very tasty. Their philly cheese steak sandwich is good. It's definitely filling and has a lot of cheesy, meaty flavor as a philly cheese steak should. They also place veggies into their philly cheese steak which really adds a lot to the sandwich. The flavor of the steak is very reminiscent of the Heavenly Hoagie (obviously though no other sandwich place in Memphis can ever make a philly cheese steak as good as the Heavenly Hoagie could). The bread they use is very nice deli bread. It's softer than typical sandwich bread, but still very good. I'm a fan of firmer bread, but I still enjoy their sandwiches very much. Their gyros are good but not the best in Memphis that I have had. The real gem in their menu, in my opinion, is their Chilean sandwich. Oh my god, it is soooooo good. Imagine a philly cheesesteak but with a ton of additional flavors like garlic, pepper, and a hint of parmesean. It is so good. Their servings on each sandwich is pretty substantial. I eat half a sandwich and feel pretty full -- you wont need a second sandwich for sure. They also serve home made chips, that are very interesting. It is strongly recommended to eat the chips as soon as you get your order. They are crispy yet chewy and are coated with a delicious salty seasoning. Make sure to order some on a visit!!! Speaking of ordering, it is strongly recommended to order your sandwich via phone rather than ordering it at the counter. They get swamped with orders and it helps them out by calling first so your sandwich will be ready when you get there rather than cluttering their dining room. They are a very small restaurant with seating for about 12 people at two tables and a small bar. It is a very tight fit. Expect to dine out, because there is not a whole lot of dining room. Their prices are very outstanding considering quality and portions with a sandwich averaging about $7. A very inexpensive and delicious place to dine. I strongly recommend stopping by and giving them a chance. They make delicious food at a reasonable price. The service leaves a little bit to be desired, but as with all restaurants you can only generally satisfy 2 out of the 3 big requirements -- service, price, and quality -- and they fulfill those last two in spades. read more

I like the new location (which is a few doors down from the old location) because it has more space for guests to eat. The previous reviews set a high bar for this restaurant, and unfortunately my first visit was not up to that standard. I got there at 1:45 pm so it wasn't that crowded. I ordered fairly quickly and it took about 7-8 minutes to get my food. I ordered a Chilean and a Philly. The first one was good, not amazing. The second one was alright. My biggest issue with both was the bread. While the meat inside was burning hot, the bread was cold. Not even room temperature, but cold. I think that completely changed the experience. The homemade chips were pretty good, albeit greasy. The staff was friendly and the place was nice. Maybe I caught them on an off day. May go again in the future. read more

The plan for the day was to take my kids to sky zone which just opened. Like I usually do, I checked yelp to see where we could find something new and yummy in the area! Yelp did NOT disappoint! I usually say a short prayer as I walk into any place with my four kids! They may take a long time to order, who knows what their mood may be from minute to minute! The lady taking our order did so with a patient and kind smile. She was helpful with our questions and made me feel at ease. I ordered the homemade chips and the philly cheesesteak with no onions on wheat (6 inch!) One child got the Reuben and fries. The funny part is neither of us had ever eaten one! I tried to talk the next child into ordering the cheeseburger sub... but she went for plain ham & provolone with homemade chips. The next child wanted chicken fingers with a bag of chips. The lady taking our order assured me it was a great choice! :) The last child was so worn out from sky zone that he could not think straight and chose not to eat!! The kids laughed and cheered as Pops (I'm guessing!) killed one wasp. Another wasp came out of no where & three of my kids waited outside! The chips were eaten immediately per another yelpers suggestion. We went crazy over them! Even the child who doesn't even like the food she likes loved these chips! We were all still talking about them later! This is not normal for kids who have just gone to the cool new trampoline place to be more excited about the homemade chips!!!! The kids couldn't wait until we got to the park to eat. The Reuben was great. I tasted one for my first time and was happy with it. She gave it a thumbs up. The ham and provolone was perfect. She was so grateful that they really left it plain as she asked! There was a ton of ham on it! It was a good thickness for a sandwich. Very good quality and yummy ham and provolone. The chicken tenders were filling - he couldn't even get to his bag of chips! The youngest was asleep by now I think! My philly cheese steak called my name loudly. When we finally got to the park, it melted in my mouth. I hardly ever order a philly cheesesteak. There may be others who know better, but I loved it!
