Went for happy hour and were sat in a weird location outside with no tables around. After 15 minutes with no service, my friend went inside to ask if a server was coming to see us and the host told her they were. Then another 10 minutes passes and happy hour was ending so we decided to get up and leave. Right as we were leaving a server walks up and said "uh, are you leaving?" We told her yes because we came for happy hour and it was over because we had been waiting for 25 minutes. Her response was "well nobody said you were here, you can order something from happy hour still" and was rude to us. The food was Hudson Yards prices which is something I don't generally prefer because it's overpriced for quantity of food. The ambiance is great though. There's a rustic feel with farm benches as tables & a great bar! The water glasses are also little rustic, small glasses. Overall, a very woody feel! The service pulled through as well! They always refilled our waters as soon as we finished them. Quick to take orders and bring checks as we wrapped up. I booked the winter lodge themed NYE dinner for a party of 5 and the experience more than exceeded my expectations! The pre fixed dinner, drink menu, dessert and wait staff were fantastic. The first half featured a live band, which made the ambiance that much more enjoyable, along with a photo booth. I'm looking forward to coming back to Porchlight to experience the standard menu and bar with more friends and family, as the whiskey and spirits selection is really impressive! I went with their small bites options, but so did my friends. It was nice that we did that because we all had a bite of each other's meals. I ordered the hush puppies, these babies had so much flavor with each bite. I loved it so much! Warm, spicy and it filled me up. My friends had the biscuits which were good, but not as good as I had hoped. The drinks were delish, I got a grapefruit cider and it was worth the price. I believe it was about 8 dollars. Service at the bar was amazing, so much fun to hang with a bartender. We ordered quite a number of dishes on the menu, but the only thing that left a lingering memory was the cookies. I think the only reason was because it was served with a shot of milk. You got me with the concept. The rest of the menu was a Southern touch, but the flavors just wasn't what my taste buds craved. There's a large range of seating that can accommodate small groups and large ones. Weekdays seem to be such a casual vibe, a lot of post work drinks as well. Not great for a date, but if you're in that area you don't have much choice unless you want to walk a few avenues. The tipping: one beer ended up being $12:52. I paid with a raised eyebrow. If you figure a beer is $8, then that's a 56.5% tip. If it's $9, then 39.1%. And if $10, then 25.2%. So either they take a ridiculous tip, or the beers are overpriced. Solid bar. Great for both dates or group hangs. There are several different sitting areas, some more intimate than others, plus a large bar. If you want a snack get the smoked cheddar biscuits and firecracker chicken and eat them together. The sweetness from the honey pairs well with the spice from the habanero. Prices may seem somewhat steep but hospitality is included. Also, they do have happy hour from 4-7. Only con is the walk from the train since it's so far on the west side. We stopped in for 1 round while waiting for a Mega Bus. It was a chilly afternoon and a great beer was needed before a 2 hour trip to Philly. We were driving by on a Saturday afternoon and there was a parking space right in front! We took it as a sign, parked and went in. Great service!!!! We were greeted warmly. The servers worked as a team and the tables were checked frequently and unobtrusively throughout our meal. I love the hospitality concept. The bill comes: no fuss, no muss, no figuring out a tip. We had the barbecued nuts! They had a good barbecue flavor and we shared the chicken po'boy. Very tasty. The rum drink and the cloudy IPA were very good. The clientele is made up of mostly mid level employees from 26th Street offices that have revitalized the hood and his restaurant. I dropped by Porchlight on Friday night per the invitation of a friend. I was skeptical as I approached the bar as it's location on 11th Ave. is pretty secluded, But as soon as you walk in you can tell that it's off the beaten path location allows for way more space than a typical NYC bar, which meant that even though it was packed with people, there was still a lot of room to spread out, as long as you weren't trying to grab a drink at the bar. Not being one who is comfortable beasting crowds and waving down bartenders, I recognized the host standing with a clipboard and put my name down with him. I was seated very quickly in two rocking chairs on an elevated porch like area of the bar, complete with a rickety side table between the chairs. Very on theme. I started with a "storm's brewing," which is basically their take on a hurricane, which falls under the header "guzzlers: light & easy...maybe too easy." They weren't wrong about that. About two in and I was nice and tipsy. (Read: I am a lightweight.) My drinking companion went with an army navy, but after we both tried each other's drinks, she ordered what I had, and I ordered what she had. The army navy was delicious and light and didn't taste overwhelmingly like alcohol. After three drinks, I was soused. We also split two plates. They were all southern style, again on theme. We had the hushpuppies and the chicken fried pork. Two dishes I wouldn't have ordered on my own, but were very tasty. It was pricey, but not unusual for an NYC bar. This establishment was the only place where I could get a bite to eat, for blocks. It truly felt like the porch light was left on for me. As soon as I entered, the hostess greeted me while I told her I needed soup! She was gracious and assured me that soup was on the menu. I headed to sit at the bar and the young woman behind the bar was ready to take my order. Surprised that I already knew what I wanted, she recommended the half po'boy--the shrimp--to accompany my soup. Both did not disappoint. The soup and shrimp po'boy were delicious! When I got the bill, I have to say that I was surprised by the price of the soup and said so (half jokingly) to the young woman behind the bar. Shortly after, she offered, "Let me see what I can do." I didn't know that anything could be done and I was prepared to pay up but the manager soon came to enquire about the food and my experience. He was charming and also gracious; he offered a small something as a consolation. It was a thoughtful gesture. Once I was seated I was greeted by a server who took my order, but after 10 minutes had passed, another server checked in on us and promised to look into the wait. I feel bad to be the first Yelper to review Danny Meyer's Porchlight and it is going to be negative. However, as a long time loyal customers to Gramercy Tavern, the Modern, Mialino and new fan to Marta, it is very difficult for me to swallow the disappointment with Porchlight, Danny Meyer's first and only bar. Here is the run down. Came here on a freezing cold, snow/rainy night. I worked 10 blocks away but my Uber bill went all the way up to $50 because of 2.5x surge due to the weather. But me and my friend told ourselves, it will be all ok once we get there, sipping some good wine/cocktail and eating delicious snacks. Uber dropped me off the no-man's land in north west corner of Chelsea. Looking from outside of the window, the bar looked so rustic industrial, warm and welcoming. On entering, I was greeted by the friendly host. But everything afterwards, went way downwards. The bar is very spacious for its category. Or should I say, it feels more a restaurant than bar. There are more individual tables than counter seats. And the place was completely packed on a stormy, wintry Tuesday night! Luckily, my friend arrived earlier than me and had got a table. I wanted to start with a glass of pino on tap before I ventured into cocktail section. Then later been told, the taps were not set up. Ok, I am fine with a glass of pino from Loire Valley. We also got two apps to nimble on: avocado crab meat toast and smoke swordfish and fixin's. The app menu was very limited and three, four items were not available tonight.That is fine, we did not come here for dinner. And neither should you because you would starve. Remember, this is NOT a restaurant. Wine selection? What wine selection? You come for the cocktails. But it is Danny Meyer's, wine list should be consistently good - Gramercy, Mialino, Marta, ditto! In 5 mins our food arrived but my glass of wine was no where to be seen. Another 10 mins, it finally arrived but the waiter put it down in such a rush that it was almost spilled. Both the avocado crab toast and the smoked swordfish were just edible. The crab meat was a bit fishy and lack of flavor, though the toast was thin and nicely toasted. The smoked swordfish fixins were a dab of fish on top of a very pathetic looking sesame cracker which was not even crisp any more. Where is the savory southern taste?! I know I know it is just a bar, but it i still, Danny Meyer's bar, the fine dinning mogul in New York :/ To add insult to the injury, the service was lacking. It took another 15 mins for my second glass of wine and it almost came the same time as our paycheck..... May be it is because it just opens and yet to work out the kinks. But I went the opening night at Marta too, the service and food certainly bench up to the Danny Meyer brand. I may come back for second try but def not any time soon. At the meantime, I stick with Gramercy Tavern and Mialino chic I can always count on for good food, services and not to mention, wine list. read more

After a quick visit to a nearby art gallery, we decided to step inside Porchlight. It was a little after 4pm on a Saturday so we were able to have a couple of drinks and some quick bites before moving on to other Saturday night adventures (...streaming television shows). Since we did go when it opened, we were able to secure seats by the bar. You can sit at the bar or at any of the tables (quite a few tables were made for at least 8 people), and those seated away from the bar will get service directly to their table. We really had a great experience here. Sure, the food may have taken a while, but it was really made with a lot of care. Drinks: The cocktails ($12-$14) we tried were great. The Behind the Mule was a combination of two kinds of whiskey with ginger, lime, and raspberry vinegar; the last ingredient made the drink a lovely, soft pink color, and really added to its tart, refreshing, summer quality. The Julep du Monde was a coffee-ish julep drink (it was all in the chicory and meletti) that was startlingly good. So good. I've never had a coffee drink that blended that well with alcohol. The non-alcoholic Sour Cherry Rickey was also tasty. Porchlight really knows how to make sour drinks work. Food: The smoky beef jerky was phenomenal. It was super smoky, a tad juicy, and very flavorful. The jar of pickles for $6 was pricey given the size of the jar, but it was interesting to have pickled grapes, okra, and plums for the first time. The Natchitoches meat pie had the flakiest crust and came with the best side of vinegar-y chopped vegetables, but the inside meat was kind of dry. Likelihood of another visit: I didn't find service to be bad at all, so I'm surprised by the other reviews. Then again, we did come right when it opened and were seated at the bar. Came here for a few drinks with friends on a Saturday night. At first glance, this is a pretty nice looking bar. However there's plenty of room a bunch of tables, and ample lighting - almost too bright; it's not quite intimate, so I would likely come with friends over a hot date. Vibe was just a tad bit off for either low-key and weekend crazy -- it's somewhere in the middle. Our party was put on a "call-ahead" list for potential seating in the game room and we were told to ask for Adam. The call ahead list is bull, because all the seating seemed to be first-come/first-serve and Adam basically told us he couldn't do anything for us. Also, this is supposed to be kind of a game bar - so why are there no pens/paper so patrons can keep track of the scores? Additionally, the bartenders couldn't get their credit cards straight and 3 out of 11 people went home with the wrong credit card. Good thing most of the drinks were charged to the appropriate tab, so the accounting wasn't messy. Drinks were delicious though, I was particularly a fan of the Cyanide and Happiness ($15). Although I was stunned that a dram of Blanton's would cost the same which seems a little pricey. Probably wouldn't choose to come back again. read more
