The batter that they use for their chicken is good, not overly crunchy. Their Cole slaw is phenomenal. They offer two sauces of your choice (ranch, honey mustard, blue cheese and hot sauce ). The hot sauce they use is one of the best I've had.Your dinner meal comes with a dinner roll. They also sell deserts. There is limited seating inside and a decent sized parking lot that they share with the two neighboring businesses. Friendly staff. I was in the area and decided to come here to pick up catfish to eat with the spaghetti I was cooking for dinner. It's in a strip mall with a bar and grill and a liquor store. This place was packed. The staff is OK, not friendly but not rude if that makes sense. The catfish took about 20 minutes which I was ok waiting. I took a bite in the car before driving home because I was curious. Meh.... it was ok I guess. The nuggets had a lot of the silver skin which I'm surprised because it's been a long time since I've seen resturants cook catfish with a lot of silver skin left on. Also the breading just didn't taste that great. Parts of the nuggets were missing the breading as well. It didn't taste like it was seasoned well either. Their hot sauce is really good. Local spot tucked away in an obscure location. Not to worry this place is doing just fine next to a billiard bar. Withheld review for a long while; selfishly didn't want to have longer wait time. Yes it is that popular because it is that good and pricing is a bargain. Order a dinner plate of either chicken or catfish and wash it down with cola. If you like odd items on the menu, try gizzards or chicken liver - they're both good. Parking can be difficult when the billiard bar is open (late afternoon thru evening). Fried chicken is excellent and one of the few places I know that serve Jack Salmon. If you are remotely in a hurry, call in your order ahead of time because the fish and chicken are made to order and it takes a while to fry them up. I have been to Porter's Chicken several times over the years, and not only are they extremely overpriced, but they TOTALLY SCREW CUSTOMERS OVER IF THEY PAID WITH CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS with added fees that the customer is unaware of. The last time I was there, they charged me nearly $8.00 in additional fees when I used my debit card, but - and get this - the fee DID NOT show up on the receipt they gave me after I made my purchase. I only discovered this added fee when I checked my card balance with my bank. They have NO BUSINESS adding other fees to an already overpriced order, especially without a customer's knowledge or permission. That should be criminalized because it is stealing!!! read more

Both styles were crispy, moist, tender and absolutely delectable while being not greasy . The care and attention to detail in bringing to market this premiere recipe by a family who prides themselves in their culinary masterpiece. There are allegedly other chicken 'heritage' spots in the central core and south city , but none offer the flavor profile of Porters. It is a major ride for me to reach Porters but....... First time visitor to this one, went with a coworker so he knew the in and outs. However, they did have signs around to ask questions if it's your first time. He said to do the chicken, but I saw Catfish...and well I love catfish. Ordered that, but they said it would be a oit 20 minutes. Unfortunately I was in a hurry so I went with th spicy chicken. I love when things work out. It is as amazing! Super juicy, spices were right there, way good. I loved the breading. I got the 3 piece all white meat...could have got one and been fine...they were huge. And as a side note, we will be going back to try the catfish! When I walked into the restaurant, it was empty. It was three ladies behind the counter and another looking out of the kitchen. One young lady was on the phone taking the customer's order. The other three older ladies look me right in my face and never acknowledge me. I waited a few minutes. The young lady who was on the hung and acknowledge me right away with a. smile, and took my order. The food came out fresh, hot, and fast. The gizzards were nicely breaded, but you could tell they hadn't seasoned the meat itself. The chicken is very bland, and who serves French fries without adding some salt or seasoning to them . My overall experience with this restaurant was very dissatisfying. The only reason they receive the two stars is that the young lady was friendly and outgoing. One last thing: it doesn't hurt to say hello to someone who enters your establishment, especially when the ladies behind the counter are all old enough to know better; they need to do better. read more

Long-time favorite fried chicken restaurant, in unassuming strip mall on Big Bend has a steady stream of regular customers who know better than to patronize the fried chicken chain restaurant down the street when they can get better quality food, at a better price, at this Mom & Pop restaurant that's been here almost 50 years. Besides fried chicken you can get catfish, cod, shrimp, Jack salmon, burgers, chicken breast sandwich, toasted ravioli, and sides like mashed potatoes, cole slaw, potato salad, etc. But the fried chicken and fried catfish are the star attractions. You can order buckets, or boxed dinners, which come with 2 sides. Normally they give you a mix of chicken pieces, but you can ask for Special, meaning you can specify what pieces you want, for a higher price. If you request spicy, the pieces have a nice kick to them, but not overly so, and it might take a few minutes extra to prepare -- but worth it, if you like spicy. You'll get pretty messy eating your fried chicken, so grab plenty of napkins. For the same reason, maybe not a good place for a first date. read more

Terrible fried chicken. Two years ago it was the second worst. As of last night it's now the worst. My wife brought me some of this terrible chicken from her function last night and it was horrible. This chicken smells and tastes like somebody dropped it in some old Long John Silver batter. I don't know how anyone gives this chicken anything above one star. The sauces, the breading, the cheesecake were all delicious. The value was amazing. The best thing I ate, and why I'll be back soon is the potato salad. Wow! We so wanted to love this place, but it's hard to overcome shitty service and crappy attitude from the owner (staff). We arrived and ordered their famous fried chicken and a cod sandwich. They told us it would be 15 minutes, which was fine with us. The wife and I started to wonder when we reached 30 minutes and everyone that had come in before us, and all that came in after us, all got their meals. We kept watching the lady that took our order, but at 45 minutes, no recognition. At 55 minutes, my patience wore out....and I did something I never do. I walked up and asked about our order. The front gal, yelled through the window to whom I think was the owner. Wheres the order for Bob's?? The owner looked around and said there was no order for Bob.... and that was the end of it. The counter lady asked if we wanted our $$'s back, which we thought was a good idea. She did refund our money, but, COME ON MAN!!!! So we don't know if anything there is good. I have ridden my bike and run by Porters more than I can count and I always breath deeply because it smells so amazing! The night before Thanksgiving we finally took the plunge and ordered carried out. First of all, 28 pieces of chicken for under $40 dollars is a great deal. I called in the order at noon for a 5:45 pick up. I'm so happy I did because the place was hopping!!! The staff was awesome and friendly and pick up was a breeze. Ambiance is not Porter's forte--I'd recommend carryout--but their chicken is spot on delicious! We did 20 pieces of "regular" and 8 pieces of spicy. The regular chicken was juicy, crispy and delicious. The spicy was AMAZING. It had enough heat to give it a great flavor, but not so hot as to make you lunge for the ice water. Bottom line . . . skip the cooking and high prices and order Porter's chicken. I guarantee I'll try their sides the next time. read more

Absolutely outstanding fried catfish and chicken with that well seasoned golden batter. The potato salad worked too. I'll be here again and again. Only downside was the fried gizzards. Please consider packaging these the same way as the chicken and fish. These gizzards were steamed out and soggy. Not how I like my gizzards. Overall, I loved this place and it's worth the wait.
