Portillo's was our go to place for years. It was family owned, but then the company was sold completely. The hot dogs are now the worst. The casings are like saran wrap. Normally I love Portillos, but today was not a good experience. We ordered three burgers and fries. It took 25 minutes to get our food despite the place not being that busy. The kitchen was clearly disorganized. When I asked for the status of my food, there were three of us in line to get attention. The first guy had gotten a spicy chicken sandwich after ordering a regular one (which they then remade), the next woman had also waited a long time but her food was at the salad counter (her fault, although I've always thought this was poor design). The man at the counter took my receipt and then didn't return it (I was too focused on my food to notice, but it was a nice tactic to keep me from filling out the internal survey. My wife is salty because we would have gotten a free fry for filling it out.). When we finally got the burgers, two out of three were burned enough to not be worth eating and they were also cold. We didn't bother asking them to remake it because after waiting 25 minutes the first time with two young children, we just wanted the experience to be over. In 2010, I ate at every Portillo's in Chicagoland. Yes, 32 Portillo's in one year. Not only that, I ate everything on the menu - from the chopped salad to the grilled vegetable sandwich (not so good if you ask me). Why, you ask? It was my New Year's resolution. I know, usually resolutions are to lose weight and exercise more, but I always fail at those goals with a few days (perhaps minutes) of the start of the new year. So, if you're interested, and you do some searching on the net (nobody says this anymore) with Portillos and 2010, you might find it. So, that brings me to last week. I ate at my local Elmhurst Portillo's on Friday and I had a great hamburger! Seriously, they have a great hamburger. In fact, it's really hard to find anything bad on the menu. I'm pointing this out because ever since Dick sold the place, I hear rumors that the quality hasn't been the same. That hasn't been my experience. However, I'm no longer ordering the grilled chicken sandwich. I used to get that fairly often, but the last few times it's been, let's say, rubbery. Anyway, having eaten everything on the menu, instead of listing out what to get, I'd say to avoid the grilled chicken sandwich and the grilled vegetable sandwich. Another adventurous day at a random drive thru. Line wasn't moving. Moved once in about 15 minutes due to another customer giving up and leaving the line (I envied him as I was at a point where I couldn't move out of the line). I counted, by pick up counter, 7 employees just huddled together standing around. Only one guy was doing something, like sticking a post it or something for the cars right in front of the pick up window. More cars gave up so I finally pulled my car out of the line- and went inside the store as I saw two other ladies packing and going in to order. One young employee had no idea where I can order and pointed me to a cashier. When I approached, an older guy walked up behind the cashier and starts yelling at me. They were not taking orders inside so I need to go through drive thru. When asked why cars weren't moving he got more flustered and more angry. Thank God for Wholefoods next door - I wasn't yelled at over there. As a long time patron and fan of Portillos, I cannot help but wonder what the hell happened today. Portillos was never known for angry treatment of their customers through thick and thin. Over 20 years of them feeding me and my family, I have never had one mistreatment. Another disappointing order placed at Portillos in Elmhurst on Route 83. No means no! When I omit an ingredient from my order, why is it I always seem to get extra of that ingredient? Why is it when I ask for cheese fries, I don't get the cheese? Why is it when I ask for a chocolate eclair, I get chocolate cake? I could go on and on at how many times the Portillos order comes out wrong. Do we have to sit in the car and open every sandwich and check it before we drive away? This is ridiculous. The only thing that sucks about Portillos is that there's not one close to my house. I guess that's not necessarily a downside because if there was, I'd be even wider than I already am. Portillos is seriously addicting, especially their italian beefs and their cheese fries. Yes, this is coming from a self proclaimed fry hater. On the rare occasion that I find fries I do like, I know they must be SUPER good cause most are blech to me. They have the perfect amount of crunch and salt that you'll find yourself mmmm'ing between every bite. What should you try? Well, anything on the menu really. Italian Beefs are my fave, but I also enjoy the cheeseburgers, chopped salads, hot dogs, milkshakes and fries. I've never heard any of my friends or co-workers order something and say "well that kinda sucked." Seriously, you'll be fine no matter what you choose. This location is cray though. In theory, it's about 8 minutes from my work. Ask me if I can really get there and back in less than 30 though. Nope, not gonna happen. The drive-thru is always wrapped around the building and the line is just as long inside. They do a great job of dealing with the amount of traffic, but if you're in a hurry - you probably want to skip it. Food itself here is what you can expect from any Portillos. It gets busy here to no one's surprise, but in spite of that, I've never had to wait very long for my order to be ready. (The Forest Park location on the other hand...) As another mild compliment, this Portillos is one of the minority of locations that consistently rhymes their order-ready lines. Definitely one of the better, faster Portillos in the Chicagoland area. This place sees a lot of traffic due to its location and has always seemed to staff itself with good, friendly people. The beefs here are always delicious and on-point. The ribs here are tender and succulent, the meat falls right off the bone with a tasty BBQ sauce to follow. They have a salad bar with unique salad selections, and more of a variety than most of the other Portillo locations. The only thing I HATE about this Portillos is the location itself. Ordered: Italian Beef sandwich, Hotdog, small fries Ambiance: Diner vibe with neon lights, how fun! The drive through was packed when we walked in but we saw multiple staff members walking up and down taking orders to speed the process up, kudos! The service inside was friendly and very efficient, definitely faster than the people waiting outside in their cars. Food: Man these are some of the tastiest dogs/sandwiches I've had in a while! The italian beef was filled with delicious tender savory beef that falls apart in your mouth. We got ours topped with peppers which were very flavorful and matched the sandwich perfectly. Definitely get the gravy (au jus) on the side and dip it as you eat so your sandwich doesn't melt in your hands. The sandwich is a little dry without it and the tanginess brings out the flavors ten-fold. The dog was super tasty as well with excellent layering of flavors, I got some heat from the peppers then the sweet from the relish then the savoriness of the dog which was a very fun layered experience. The fries flavor-wise were nothing to write home about but they were admittedly fried to perfection with an enjoyable crunch but soft center. I would highly recommend a visit here if you get the chance, I had never tried a chicago dog place and couldn't be happier to 'pop my cherry' at this one :) read more

Let me begin by saying I love Portillo's, they have great food from their Beef Sandwiches, Italian Sausages, Cheeseburgers, Tamales, etc. The reason that this review is giving them a 3 star rating is based on the service levels that I get at this particular location. I "try" to give places the benefit of the doubt and accept that there are going to be off days with them, but unfortunately the below average service at this location has become fairly consistent. The most recent (and final straw for me) was the last time I went here. They managed to lose my order (and 2 other peoples next to me). We had to wait for a manager who they as opposed to apologizing for their mistake decided to blame customers for the issue. There was no apology or attempt to better the situation at all. Very poor management and customer service. As I said I do love Portillo's and that feeling made me give them an Average score of 3 even though the service does NOT deserve that rating. I will continue to eat Portillo's, but I will not frequent this location anymore. I tried to visit this location on 11/12/17 with my father. We were looking forward to Portillo's and were already in the area, so we figured "Why not?" When we got to order our food, the power surged and the restaurant lost electricity for a minute or two. We didn't think this would be a problem, but we were very wrong. The cashier was pleasant and polite through the whole process. She took down our order and said she'd process the payment as soon as her system rebooted. The manager, on the other hand, requested the line start making our food ASAP. At first, that seemed to make sense, but the system stayed down for more than 15 minutes. They had our food sitting at the counter, getting cold, for a long while and refused to give it to us before we paid. We explained that no one likes a cold hot dog, but the staff shrugged their shoulders and said they couldn't give us our food because we could easily steal it. After waiting more than 15 minutes, watching our food spoil, we requested to cancel our order and went to a different location. They never apologize AND you have to wait at least 30 minutes in line to get the rest of your order so your food is always cold. We just had the worst experience we've EVER had at ANY restaurant. There were very few people inside the restaurant and we waited over 20 minutes at the counter for 2 HOT DOGS AND 1 HAMBURGER! People behind us were getting their food and none of the crew members acknowledged us when we asked where our order was. And when we asked to talk to the manager, he was absolutely rude! The ribs that we used to devour are now in the past, bad taste & less meat, even the house bread tastes worse than before - like it hasn't been baked properly.
