Not a big cheesesteak sandwich person to start with, but having one here did not help. Meat is bland and mealy in texture. You'll need to really pile on the peppers and spices to give it flavor and to make up for the blandness. Bun is average to below average in both freshness and taste. Dining areas are good though, both inside and out. But if we're ever in the mood for a cheesesteak sandwich again, we won't come back here. read more

The first time I had portillo's was in Chicago, but my friend & I were in town for a conference in Phoenix, and stayed in Glendale. When I saw Portillo's on google maps, I know we had to stop by. We ended up going through the drive thru but got a peek inside, & I always love Portillo's themed interior. The staff who took our order & brought our food out were all very kind. Dined in on a Monday evening with my husband. Though the restaurant is located near a mall, it wasn't nearly as busy as I thought it would be. We both ordered Italian beef sandwiches and fries. My husband, his sister and I stopped at this restaurant once. I had a good hot dog with a choice of many condiments. The bun was nice and thin but a bit mushy. I rated the hotdog a 4; my husband would have given it a 5. My sister-in-law had an Italian beef sandwich. She thought the sandwich would have benefited from dipping sauce, but there was none. Nifty venue that gives that 50's vibe. Very spacious with plenty of seating. They even have a bar which is their to-go area that serves beer along with their famous cakes. I was rang up by a manager. He was super friendly and helped make recommendations. Overall I was not impressed with the food. They have the service aspect down very well. There is a person or several people at each station. Quick in getting orders in and out. The only issue is there were mistakes with mine. My chicken noodle soup was not hot. It also tasted like I was eating a salt packet with every bite. My mom had ordered one too and noticed the same issues. They forgot my gravy and my fries were loaded with salt. Her hot dog was smashed which was weird has they have someone at the hot dog station who loads the dog on an actual hot dog counsel. So not sure what happened. My mom is a hot dog fan but not impressed with the taste. I know this restaurant is popular but either they feel off on the food or not for my taste buds. read more

This is the 3rd time I've ordered catering from here, and the 2nd time things were missing. There was no heating kit for the Italian beef tray. Also, paid extra for cheese sauce and alas no cheese sauce. Called and was told sorry. What am I supposed to do with that? The 1st time they left stuff out it was the dressing for the chopped salad. Service at this location is really frustrating. I have seen them throw my food to the expo line and when they handle drive through they practically toss your food at you without any ability to clarify what you are receiving. This does not matter whether they are in a Rush or not. read more

I'm going to end up continually lowering the number of stars I give Portillo's because I can't get celery salt on my hotdog. The last four times I went I got celery salt only once and I really had to look hard for it. I've even gotten to the point that I order extra celery salt, and I get none. Celery salt is inexpensive and I'm getting to the point that I am either going to have to ask you to give me a jar of celery salt to carry in my car since you refuse to put it on my hotdog for me or I'll have to go out and buy my own jar of celery salt and carry it in my car. This éclair cake is soooo good. The layers of homemade cream with the chocolate frosting on top is pure comfort food. It is a bit heavier than the classic chocolate cake but a great finish after their awesome chicago dogs and fries with the insanely great cheese sauce for dipping. Several years back Portillo's was one of the premier places to get an Italian Beef sandwich in the Chicago area and we were excited when they came to the Valley. Then the original owner sold and things have gone downhill since that day. Last night we decided to try again, first of all the beef was more gray than brown, the quantity' for the meat on the sandwich is a joke, the size of the sandwich is about 30-40% smaller than in the past and the flavor was nonexistent. The Italian sausage was no bigger that's a thin hotdog and dry as could be. The Corporate world has ruined this place. We will not be back. read more

Have been through the drive through many times. the food is always good but a little more expensive than other drive throughs. This last time We ate inside. I am not a fan of the layout, seems cluttered. Maybe it is because of the seating arrangement. Everyone was nice and there is always someone coming around cleaning. I think it's safe to say that there is no better fast food milkshake in existence than the strawberry shake at Portillo's. I have gotten several people addicted to these over the last few years. I like the Glendale location because there is rarely a line (granted, I usually stop here after leaving Costco and it's not during peak hours so take that into consideration), the service is always efficient, and I can get in and out of the drive thru quickly. I enjoy their chopped salad and like that you can customize items (i.e. no onions!). Portillo's is always a great option. Make sure you try the strawberry shake - you will not be sorry! read more

Have not had a Portillo's Hot Dog for many years since we visited the Chicago area. While we were in Arizona it was an opportunity to indulge. Nothings changed. It's still the great American Chicago dog. Their ordering and preparation is a well tuned assembly line. Place your order and receive a number and your order is displayed on a video screen. You can watch the progress and your number will be called when ready and don't be late. We have Windy City Dogs in Las Vegas and they are on par with Portillo's. Have eaten at Portillo's in Chicago and it was amazing. This Portillo's is sad by comparison. Quality of food is not very good here. I got the Italian beef and my husband got a polish and an Italian sausage. The beef was very fatty. Also there was not any gardenia to order for my Italian beef even though when you are standing in line to order, they have jars of it to buy. Is it really Italian beef without it? I was asked if I wanted hot or sweet peppers and I was expecting gardenia. I told her sweet and I got 2 medium slices of pickled green bell pepper. My husband asked for sweet peppers on one and hot for the other got the same slices of green bell pepper. Just not the same food. Disappointing and not worth the high prices with is no great ambience or food. Also hard to find a clean table. Whole restaurant seems a little dirty. Ughhh. read more

This place has gone downhill in the service department and the food has started to suffer. Used to love coming here, but it's been rough lately. Took the kids there last weekend and their ketchup pumps weren't working. Each pump was producing a drop of ketchup. Even with the tiny cups it took 30 pumps to fill one. I mentioned it to the staff and they just shrugged. I asked for some packets when my food came to save me the trip to the gym and was told they don't carry ketchup packets. I asked how they do takeout and drive through then? I was told "we don't give out ketchup with to go or drive through orders". Food was pretty blah too. Not worth the money. This isn't the Portillo's of old anymore. Unfortunately I remember Portillo's of 25 years ago. Chicago dogs came with Sports and the fries were cooked to order. But more importantly, the dog itself was much bigger and the flavor was better too. Oh well. Now it's a chain. I will say that the Italian beef is still pretty darn good. The large version comes with a pile of beef and we still like it double dipped. Finally, when you order a #1 or #2, they now ask for up sizing. Wrong! If I wanted it upsized, I'll let you know. Since we're from Ferris Bueller country, we've been eating at Portillo's or their Italian spin-off Barnelli's for almost forty years and have nothing but fond memories and a full stomach. We've eaten in all three PHX locations, as well as a dozen of their Midwest locations and have nothing but nice things to say. When they opened their Scottsdale location, I got a chance to have a long conversation with Mike Portillo, what a class act. On our most recent visit here, we went with some Red Hots, a couple of salads and an Italian Beef Combo. This place is an expensive joke. I ordered 3 combos which came to $48. I didn't get 2 of my drinks. When I went to get them I was told I would have to pay for them. I spoke to the manager who also told me I would have to pay and that I didnt order 3 combos. The girl who took our order was rude, as was the manager. The food was extremely small portions too. It was our first time grabbing food at this newly opened Portillo's. It's located in the Arrowhead area and it's BUSY! We ended up parking by the hotel and walking over which was sooo much easier than trying to fight the drive thru traffic. Upon walking in I was surprised at how big it was. There's plenty of booths and tables and their order line was easy to navigate. We got 2 cheeseburgers, a Italian beef and sausage sandwich, chopped salad a couple shakes and strawberry shortcake. Everything came to $55 which was pricey but you get a lot of food and it tastes good! The order system was great and you are able to see your order being prepared and when it's ready. The food was really good and there were no complaints. The cheeseburgers were cooked perfectly and the fixings were fresh and yummy. The chopped salad had generous portions of chicken and was a really big fresh salad. I got the house dressing and it was like a mix of Italian and honey mustard. It really enjoyed it. The Italian beef and sausage was good and the hubs said he will get some peppers on the side next time but really enjoyed it. The shakes were great and the strawberry shortcake was fab! I'll definitely get that again. It was actually a really big dessert and 1 was enough for the 4 of us to share. Overall, it's busy and you will have a wait in the drive thru or dine in. Was lucky enough to come down on the pre opening and score a meal for me and my son. Love Portillos! Everyone was friendly and the line moved pretty quick. I went with a Combo sandwich, cheese fries and a Coke, and my son went with 2 hot dogs, and cheese fries. Food was delicious, as always. Their cheese fries are my favorite! Ordered the chili cheese dog and the frankfurter was thick but the bun was a little small considering what it was holding. Not sure if the chili was hand made, but it tasted like it came out of a can. Biggest draw back was how small the whole hot dog actually was. I didn't believe it could get worse but it has. As a native Chicagoan Portillo's has been a go to forever. We were thrilled when the Glendale, AZ location opened. Unfortunately since the sale we had begun to notice subtle changes to some food items. The burger is my go to & the past few visits have been a huge disappointment. The buns are not the same, they fall apart after one or two bites making it impossible to finish, the charbroiled taste is no longer a thing. The hot dogs are also different & not good. AZ has a large population of Chicago folks & many have voiced the same opinion. Stop changing a good thing to save .5 cents on a bun. If the cost has risen then charge me a quarter more & keep the quality we are all accustomed to. read more

I was craving a good Chicago dog and a friend recommended Portillo's, but there wasn't a restaurant near me. While out running an errand, I drove by and saw the Portillo's on 79th Ave!! I was SO excited! I ordered the regular hot dog with everything on it, small fries and a drink to go, and found a shaded park nearby to just eat in my car. While attempting to eat the hot dog I was unable to bite through the "skin" of the dog! The meat INSIDE the skin would break, but the skin itself would not....no matter how hard I tried to bite through it!! I had to use my fingers to pull and tear through the skin!! It was such a mess, not a pleasant experience at all. I may give the restaurant another chance, but will definitely try something else on the menu!
