Last Monday, the 21st of July, I stopped by the Glendale location to pick up a Chicken Salad from the Drive Thru. Ordered with the Curbside Server, paid my $14+ for a Pecan Chicken Salad, picked it up at the Window and proceeded to drive home to enjoy my Chicken Salad.....problem though, when I got home and opened my "Chicken" Salad, there was one thing missing from my $14+ Chicken Salad.....THE CHICKEN. There was none. How does that even happen, aren't there several pairs of eyes checking orders along the way to make sure they're assembled correctly?? One might think. I immediately called the Glendale Store to inform them of their mistake and was asked if I would like to come back.....well no, that would mean another 20min trip back plus wait time plus another 20min drive home. I was told by a somewhat confused phone representative that she would get someone to help with my problem. Another young lady came to the phone and gave me two options, Option #1 was a Coupon and Option #2 was to refund the Bank Card I had paid with. I chose Option #2 and was told it would take 2-3 Business Days to appear on my statement. Having spent many years in the Restaurant Business, I understood. Fast forward to one week later and no refund has been given. So, one week later I call to check on why I haven't received my credit and when I asked to speak with a Manager a gentleman named Robin took the call. I explained the situation, told him that the young lady I had spoken to last week assured me that a refund was forthcoming and it would just be a couple of days. Robin responded with "Are you sure you're calling the right store? We don't have any female Managers, must have been one of our Hostesses". Well then maybe you shouldn't have Hostesses acting as if they can make Management decisions. Instead of offering to just comp a Salad, I was told that I need to call the Corporate Offices to backtrack the situation, would you like their number? Seriously? That's your solution for poor Customer Service in an Arizona Location? To call your Corporate Office in Illinois? I not only still have the Date/Time on the Receipt but also the phone record of my call. I'll call Illinois in the morning but let me go on record saying the quality of the Food and the Customer Service at Portillo's has gone downhill since Dick Portillo sold the business.......and I'm from Chicago. read more

I been to a Chicago location, So Cal and a number of times to this Glendale AZ store. I not noticed a big difference. Service is OK, sometimes inside can bog down a bit. Food is prepared well and is of good quality. I'd rate this 31/2 to 4 stars compared to fast food restaurants. I would recommend the Beef sandwiches, hot dogs, chopped salad and Chocolate Cake. I'm sure there are other good choices. People seem to complain mostly about orders. If it To-go, check it before you leave. No, it's not "In and Out" burgers or "Chick-fil-A", but who can compete with employees and food at those two. Portillos is good food with mostly hard working employees. I do enjoy a good Chicago Dog and Portillo's makes them the right way consistently. The dogs are quality meat and they get them hot all the way through. The poppy seed buns are steamed and soft. Unfortunately every staff member I encountered seemed disgruntled and almost angry to be there. There were a lot of unclean tables and debris here and there. They need to find a way to perk up the existing staff or find staff that wants to be there. Good luck with that! read more

When I saw the Italian beef (pictured on giant menu) it had a mouthwatering sandwich of Italian beef with peppers... what I received was a sandwich (bread was good) that was stuffed with meat, that's it! No dipping sauce (au jus) no nothing! The meat tasted like it sat in the refrigerator too long frankly so I doubt I'll be back. Food was cold ... fries were not crispy and they were cold. Portillo's in Scottsdale off the 101 and Shea was our favorite go to for any meal time, later it got so crowded inside waiting on long lines to order, but we continued until I moved out of that area, now I go to the new one on 77Ave and Bell rd near the Arrowhead mall, I love the salads, they got even better in this place with a nice soft crusty piece of Italian bread, yummy!!!! Just moved to the area and didn't get a cha ce to u pack anything at the house so we decided to go to Portillos. Ordered a beef and cheddar croissant which was super cold and dry. Cheese wasn't melted what so ever. Never got the hot peppers that they charged me for. Asked for a side of au ju sauce for the beef never got it. Haven't had Portillos in at least a year or two. Hopefully my next experience is better. Seems like over the years this place gets more expensive and gives less service and quality. read more

I've never thought much of Portillo's until I attended the soft opening of their Arrowhead location, but since then I've been back two more times. The Italian beef and sausage sandwich is smaller than the Big Italian sandwich, but it's substantial, and in my opinion, better tasting. But the big winner, for me, is the chocolate cake shake. I'm sad I found out about this irresistible dessert only a week before going keto. It's a noticably moist chocolate cake blended into a vanilla malt. There's pudding in the mix! My other half visited this new location Glendale for soft opening last evening. My hubs ordered Chicken tenders with Onion rings and I had the Portobello sandwich with French Fries and two Cokes. The wait was not very long before our food was ready. My Portobello was cooked fine and my guy said his tenders were tasty. We even had a piece of their Chocolate cake. Boy, was that cake moist and tastey. I'd gladly grab a piece of that cake on the next visit. I was impressed by the location. It was roomy, bright and cleverly decorated. The employees were all friendly inside and outside in spite of us hungry visitors. What I was impressed with was that after we checked in, we were asked if we could donate to a local Mission from the area. One of the women at the table told me what services they provide to the community. Awesome idea. Overall, the event was great, food was good, the company was wonderful. I'll be back. read more

This location is pitifully disappointing! EVERY time I have ordered here...something is missing. They charge for every little thing and are not cheap...my order should be PERFECT EVERY D@MN TIME!!! I ordered 4 sandwiches with 8 containers of peppers on the side. One of the sandwiches had peppers (the wrong peppers might I add) and I only received 3 of the containers of peppers. I should have checked the bag myself, but at the prices they charge...I should not have too!!! If they short every other customer 2 containers of requested AND paid for items...talk about increased profit margin!!! This is the 3rd strike. I have eaten at many Portillo's in several different states and I am a big fan. Having said that, I was very impressed with this location. The place is very clean and decorated like a 60s diner. There was a woman going around cleaning and helping people which is a first at any Portillo's I've been to. The food was fresh, tasted excellent, and out in about 5 mins. I first went to the location in Buena Park and liked their decor more than this 50s Diner theme that Portillo's went with. We have too many of those around the valley so, when I first saw the theme at the Glendale location, it was an instant eye role. I read some of the reviews before composing mine and I will agree and disagree with some. A few people mentioned disgruntled employees. I have never encountered this here, but I also live by the motto, get your stuff then go. Generally speaking, if you want to give employees attitude, you deserve to get it right back. I typically visit around 11am so, the place is clean, not crowded, and they aren't hit by the army of stay-at-home moms who are already upset after shopping in that horrible mall next door and need a new place to unleash their wrath. I also agree with the lack of consistency. Example, I always get a big beef with cheese. Sometimes they give me a side of meat juice, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they put cheese first then pile meat other times, cheese is an after thought and it gets all over the wrapper. Sometimes they add a little meat juice to the sandwich itself so it's a little wet when you eat it. Sometimes they don't. It's a good quality meat and you get a good amount for the price. I recently tried the fish sandwich for the first time, I really liked it and the sweet bun they use. Personal taste, it needed a little flair, maybe some peppers or different sauce to make it stand out. Not that it was bad at all, just to make it a little different. read more

Arrrrggg what happened? Portillo's has been LEGENDARY in my family for years. Unfortunately not any more. We always get the big beef's. Some sweet, some hot some both. Then we get another one for each of us to take home. It's been awhile since we've been out of state so today this was one place we missed so much. Went late in the afternoon when it was dead. Waited and waited and waited for our order. There was lots of staff but not a lot of food going out. As we waited we noticed while there was lots of staff working at the drinks and fries end of the line the other end was, frankly just standing around, horsing around. Only one out of three seemed to be doing anything. The trays with the drinks were ready and waiting but the sandwiches weren't coming out. Ok well anticipation isn't to bad when you're so hungry and happy to be getting such a great meal. Finally the # is called, the food is here YAY! what the heck. The first big beef, a hot sweet has exactly 2 small strips of peppers and maybe a tablespoon of hot giardineria not the ALWAYS generous portions of both. Ok, ok but the taste? WTW the beef has almost NO FLAVOR, and is so chewy, the au jus has no flavor it is so watered down, this is ridiculous. Worse still, so are the other Big Beef's. So bad ketchup had to be used. Ketchup I say. Who the hell ever puts ketchup on a Portillo's Big Beef? No One, No One ever had to. The beef can't be what was served to us over the years unless someone really screwed up this one batch up terribly. On the same day the au jus was made incorrectly and the portion sizes were under served, very doubtful. Unfortunately Portillo's seems to be caught in the restaurant tsunami sweeping so many once reliable dining establishments. Increased prices, difficult staffing and decisions to cut corners than maintain their reputation. read more

I stopped here while passing through and hearing a lot about portillos in Chicago! Let me start with the positive. The hotdog and Italian beef were tasty and had good flavor and good texture and overall good! The ambiance was great with the old time diner feel and the way they call out your orders. Now for the negative. They have a huge amount of staff, but half of them are playing around with the cheese, the drinks are sitting there, the shakes are sitting there and half are doing a great job. I had to ask the employees to get me my shake and cake because it had been 19 minutes and all the other orders had been called. It's truly good place to eat. However the service is horrible! Yes bad! I'm all about working a great and fun environment. But it's another thing to be waiting a long time because staff just want to en laughing and playing with the food and talking at the expense of the customer's time! I ordered a Maxwell St Polish dog because they are hard to find. It was very large. 2 meals for me. My girl went with Italian Beef and dipping sauce on the side. For my Maxwell 2nd dish I removed the bun altogether and just dipped it in Dijon mustard as slices. If you must have it on a bun I suggest you get the bigger bread offering - the hot dog bun is pretty weak considering its size. She preferred hers more than I preferred mine for sure. We did order the chocolate eclair cake which she devoured and loved. Highly Recommend that dessert! I just wasn't falling for the hype I'd heard about the place.
