I got sick off the Italian beef. I'm back because my grandmother who is 98 loves the place. She use to frequent another place that served Italian Beef's but they are closed now. She never has any complaints and they do it the way she likes. There are so many options in Chicago this just isn't for me. I ordered a Charbroiled Double Bacon Cheeseburger, Well Done and Cut in Half. When I opened the box the burger was too "light" (colored) as if it was not well done, it didnt appear to be charred nor was it cut in half as I requested. Same as the bacon, its way under cooked. I took one bite and it didnt even taste "charred". For all my "grillers" theres nothing like the taste of real barbecuqe, from a charcoal grill, charred taste, not an electric grill. Good food, incredibly slow service. I haven't had Portillo's in a long time but I was looking forward to it. It was cold and snowy, huge drive-thru line so I made the effort to come inside. I ordered at the kiosk and waited almost 15 minutes for my food while it was completely empty. In that time, they called out four orders, the rest were pick-up and drive-thru. My question is why do people in person have to still wait in the drive-thru line for their food? We should have our own line of however many people, not just one big pile of orders. Have one person working on the dine-in orders, and the other on the drive-thru orders. Both get served equally fast. Anyway, that was my only gripe. The food was great as always, like I remember. I got a beef dip and hot dog. The hot dog was significantly better than I remember, but last time I came to Portillo's, it was the downtown location and the hot dog was like mush. This one was snappy like Vienna Beef but I don't think they use Vienna Beef. They just have got to fix the wait times for dine-in orders, especially if people are going there on a lunch break and have to sit there waiting forever. read more

I came here over the weekend and for starters, if you need to be somewhere at X time, do not come to the drive-thru here. You will be waiting for forever and a day and you may or may not receive the correct order. I had placed my order as normal and I placed it for 4 items total. During my time waiting in line, I was asked a few times what my order was (I've never really been asked so many times while waiting) and once I finally get to the window, the woman in the window (not the ones outside), was very rude and made mention "that's not what you ordered" after I explained to her my order, after being asked a 4th time. I tried to explain to her that it was my order and I'd be happy to show her my bank account since the money was just taken out but she was so adamant that I was "lying" about my order. It felt very accusatory and she didn't even give me a chance to show her my bank account that I had pulled up. The gentleman and the other lady who were outside were really nice but they asked me a 6th time to repeat my order and by that time, I was a little frustrated. It's a large dining area and I love how the pick-up window still does the rhyming when announcing orders. You dont hear that anymore. The hamburger and fries were great. Waited over 25 minutes in the drive-thru only to be told at 11:05 that salads were no longer being served after 11:00, despite already being in line well before then. When I explained this, multiple employees spoke over the intercom at the same time repeating the same response, with no acknowledgment or attempt to resolve the situation. The lady was making burgers with long blue weave hanging all over the place. I asked him why she didn't have a hair net. I stopped by on Thursday afternoon, 5/15, for a bite (around 4:15-4:30 PM) with my cousin, who hadn't been here in about 9 years. The cashier wasn't very friendly. I asked for recommendations, and she said, "I don't really know," which was odd--it felt like she was ready to clock out. Anyway, we placed our order, and the food took a little longer than expected. A young lady at the counter noticed and asked for my receipt. She then worked quickly to get my food out and even added a slice of cake to make up for the wait. She was kind and engaging, which I appreciated. There was also an older Black gentleman in the lobby who spoke to us and checked in, which was a sweet gesture and made us feel welcomed. Brought the fam to Chicago for the weekend and stopped in to Portillo's based on a friend's recommendation. The atmosphere with throwback music and displays made for a fun ambiance and I was glad to have lots of seating for our relatively large group. In terms of service, we were disappointed to find that our order was lost/misplaced after waiting for 15-20 minutes. Once the problem was identified it was quickly remedied, but my wife, who was waiting for the food, had to talk to several people before getting any traction which was unfortunate. The cake shakes we tried were unique and novel and I really enjoyed the lemon cake with strawberry! The Italian beef we got with "light sauce" and were a little underwhelmed, and I didn't think there was anything special about the spicy chicken sandwich either.
