Portillo's recently built a location near my home in the Dallas TX area. You can't get near the place, the line of cars is consistently wrapped around the building. So, while in town for work, I decided to see what the fuss was all about. Staff was friendly and recommended the Italian Beef Sandwich - not my usual kind of thing, but I went for it. This is not the location to which we normally go, yet drive by it often enough that we finally fell to temptation. I got the Maxwell Street Polish and J got a Portillo Dog. Both were as we expected: DELICIOUS. The polish had the right amount of snap and char. I'm not sure if they actually grill the polish sausages, but they taste like they are charred on a grill. Just thinking about it now is making my mouth water. J had no complaints about his Portillo Dog, either. Everything, from the bun to the toppings, were fresh and created a medley of gluttony-inducing flavor. We almost went and bought another round, yet were able to restrain ourselves. This location is open until midnight, so if you're hungry after watching a movie at AMC Rosedale (our purpose in being in the area), then you can get a better class of late-night grub at Portillo's. The only thing I didn't like was having to wipe down the table at which we sat. They were busy at the time of our visit, so a crew member might not have had a chance to do this prior to our arrival. We were stoked to hear the Portillos chain was opening a spot in Roseville! We're big fans of the original Chicago spot. Bear in mind this isn't a fancy, blow your mind kind of joint. It's a down-to-earth spot that serves up good food and good vibes. We actually did takeout because we have a new baby and going out can be more stressful than fun. The hot dog was great - a classic Chicago dog with all the fixings (just no ketchup, per the usual). The Italian beef sandwich was also good, could have added some hot peppers, but still. The salad was yum! Chock full of lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, chicken, pasta and more, it took on a great flavor with the house dressing. The cheeseburger was a cheeseburger - aka nothing fancy but filling. It's by no means going to be our date night spot, but it is definitely a go-to when we need some good food on the cheap! I guess I'll try this again, but I wasn't blown away by my first visit to Portillos. It's only been open a few weeks, and that probably contributed to the chaotic-feeling experience I had. It was around 2pm on a Saturday, but it felt like a lunch rush and you could tell the crew felt burdened. As I was leaving, they shared a kidding celebration with us all that they had finally depleted the line at the cashier. This was also characteristic of the front-and-center "we have fun working here" vibe that they try to keep up. As long as it feels sincere, I like that. My food was average. I got an Italian beef that was extra big. It comes with moist meat in a hunk of fresh bread, nothing else. I asked for some mozzerella and barely detected any of that grated cheese on my sandwich. But that shaved beef is tasty. My fries were average; bland without ketchup. I'm reasonably curious to try something else, but if I don't especially like the next thing I try, I won't likely be lured back by the big-on-personality conceit alone. read more

I grew up with Portillos in Chicago. Even when I went to work as an adult, it was a landslide when we all came to order lunches. The full dips, half dips etc. (the Roseville location didn't even know what that is!, they look at you as if they've just been 2 days after weaned off nappies.) I was so embarrassed after recommending this place. I did not know that the real Portillos was bought by some entity that had nothing to do with food. Stay away!! They no longer use fresh beef (Iit's all dryly frozen) Then it's not cooked the beef italian (or Chicago) style. They roast it until all the juices are dead then slap on a really wanky extremely vinegary giardiniera is putrid (er, I mean giardiniera). And as a special bonus! You get bus that have been reserved for days, dried, crumbly and stale. Yes, there is a lot of dining space available because no one wants to eat here. First time ordering at Portillo's. I ordered Greek Salad, my dining companion Caesar Salad. While the salads were decent, this restaurant is not friendly to people with mobility issues nor do they seem to care about sanitation. Mobility issues...you have to stand in a line to order and another line to pickup your tray. Ordering takes place at the back of the restaurant, pickup at the front. Poor design and traffic flow. Order at the front of building, pickup at the back. If you can't carry tray of food, go somewhere else. Sanitation...cleaning buckets left on dining tables, unisex bathroom was disgusting. Trash container overflowing with bloody paper towels. Not to mention the floor needed attention. One bathroom per floor, is not adequate. Bathroom didn't have a hook for a jacket or purse. I'm a native Chicagoan who's in town for an extended period of time for work. When the urge called for Portillo's (which are common where I live) I looked up the closest location. It was over a half hour away from where I'm at but c'mon- the urge! I ate a beef n cheddar with cheese fries and a root beer there= 5 stars. Order Italian beef wet which is totally submerged in gravy which I'm guessing is like beef au jus no matter it's definitely the way I will always order it for lunch. The service was decent. The menu is truncated, not sure if that is because of Covid. We are in, but everything was served to go, again, likely due to Covid. Lots of single use waste :-(. The space is nicely decorated and clean. The food is made to order. The burger was clearly from the freezer. This ain't Culver's hamburgers. And they were very light on the bacon. If you're new to Portillos I recommend a charburger or italian beef (don't ask for it dipped unless you want your sandwich sopping wet with gravy!). They served all employees that ordered food before making our order. The people we came with were already done eating before we even got our food. They also got our order wrong while ringing it up and forgot to put bacon on one of our burgers that we ordered. Overall the service was not good. The food was decent, but did not make up for the lack of service. The burgers, hot dog, and fries were average. I would not order the onion rings again. Today is the first day of my new diet, so last night I decided to go out with a bang... a beefy one... and chili doggy one. Even after I already ate dinner... twice. After I missed it the first time around, I pulled up to the Portillo's drive thru, which isn't very well-lit/distinguishable in the dark. Instead of ordering through a speaker, an employee walked out from around the corner to take my order, take my payment, and put an order number on my car mirror (pro tip - don't forget to remove this before you speed off!). She was very friendly and efficient. I excitedly ordered an Italian Beef with sweet peppers and slightly dipped, and a chili cheese dog. It took almost 10mins to receive it, though it sounded like they were pretty busy in there. My takeout order stood up well to the 10min drive home. Both items were warm but not soggy. The Italian Beef was just what the doctor ordered (or advised against tbh). The bread was deliciously crusty and chewy, oh man! The beef was sliced so thin and was very tender. The "sweet peppers" were actually pretty salty, but I liked that because the meat was slightly under seasoned. The chili cheese dog was no-frills perfection. I love the poppy seed bun and the snappy hot dog. I can't wait to have both of these again when my diet fails in 2 weeks! read more

We got takeout, and the whole family was happy. I love Chicago style hot dogs and am excited they have a vegan option! To the person who complained they don't stuff their own sausages - really? I'm grateful they don't try to make their own vegan dogs and use Field Roast, instead - by far the best brand, imo. Thumbs up on their vegan Chicago dog, from the 3 of us who got it. Yes, it is crowded, yes, it is slow going, yes, it is loud, yes, parking can be weird, yes, it is confusing the first time, (so is sex) yes, it is organized chaos. But getting some unique food from a major metropolitan area establishment that has withstood the test of time, is worth it. At a darn good price to boot! Initially, I enjoyed their food, but seems as though they are cutting corners. An example would be the cheese that they put on their hamburger. It's not a cheddar, but more like a cheese food...not very tasty. There used to be an option to pick from several different cheeses but they did away with th choices so you're stuck with their processed cheese. Was obviously a pinch of cold cheese just sprinkled on top, it was not melted or toasted. When we eventually got sweet peppers it was two pieces in a tiny cup as was the "extra" gravy, maybe a tablespoon. Very disappointing as we are from Chicago. It was our first time to this location. It has not been here too long. I have been to the Maple Grove and Woodbury locations and also many in the Chicago area. The food is good here if you like dogs, shakes and the Italian Beef is very good here.The onion rings and fries are frozen. The fries are pretty good but i would skip the onion rings. The people seemed nice but the place was slow but we were there off peak during Covid. They have an outdoor patio and 2 spacious levels inside. There is plenty of room to spread out. They also have bathrooms on both levels towards the back and an elevator if you need it. I love the decor and the nostalgic feel of these places. I heard that they are putting one in both Bloomington and Apple Valley. read more

It was a trek in the frozen tundra to get to Portillo's today.My feet were cold,the roads were treacherous,but I made it to the restaurant in one piece but frozen. Portillo's in Roseville has a lot of seating.The place is just dang huge.There was not an issue with finding a seat at all.I guess this location just opened up at the end of January 2019.Parking is plentiful and the atmosphere is fun with lots Chicago gangster era nostalgia and big band music playing. Now to the food.I got the beef and cheddar croissant and it was meh! Really! The hype was not worth it.There was little cheddar and not enough meat.I came hungry and left hungry.I also got the cheddar fries which can a la carte.So you get the fries and the cheese sauce come on the side for and extra 0.70 cents.I did not get that concept...why not just serve it poured all over the fries‍.It was an expensive meal in my opinion to leave hungry.I did not even get a drink and ended up spending over $10.Not sure if they are worth trying...the food that is.Portillo's need to work on there portions.The two stars are for poor portions and lack of flavor.Nice new building though! read more
