It's been a lotta years since a I last had a Chicago beef sandwich, so when I spotted this Portillo's driving around during a visit to the Roseville area, I felt like it was calling my name. Expansion locations of beloved local street food (or street food adjacent) establishments almost never quite capture the full glory of the original. I'm sure this place doesn't either, though it's been forever since I've been to the OG location. But, the food was very good, and the beef sandwich was at least close enough to the original to strongly conjure those memories. I snuck a bite of my three year old's plain hotdog and the flavor and quality were solid. The food is also a good value. I got take outs, so I didn't get the full service experience but their take out service was as good as it gets. They were proactive in serving me, made sure my order was right and that I was happy with it; that I had everything I needed in the bag, etc., and were friendly while they were at it. And the vibe is distinctly Chicago, not just on the surface level where they have a lot of Chicago themed decor (which is nice but any corporate operation can mass produce that) but also on the level of the wood, the lighting, the layout, and even the personality of the service, etc., which all felt plausibly Chicago. If you're in the area and looking for beef sandwiches and/or hot dogs, this is your spot. read more

For the second time in two weeks, the HVAC system was down - I'm guessing it was never fixed. Sadly the fun vibes were wilted by the near 100 degrees temps outside which were readily transferred indoors. Food was predictably very good. The side salad was immense & fresh. What a fun evening! The Yelp Elite event at Portillo's in Roseville was such a great experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly welcoming and organized, and everything ran smoothly. The food was delicious! I loved getting to build a Chicago-style hot dog, and the chicken tenders, fries, onion rings, and dipping sauces were all fresh and flavorful. The chopped salad was a nice addition, and the cake was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. It was also a wonderful opportunity to meet people in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. I love the Chicago dog and the roast beef and cheddar croissant. I always order extra gravy to dip it in. I also usually get fries and a cup of cheese sauce. It's great for dipping the fries in or adding a bit to my hot dog. Everyone I've gone there with has enjoyed their beef and/or sausage sandwiches. My only complaint is their locations. They only have three, north metro, east, and west metro. They really need one in the south metro as well. read more

I'm a Portillo's fan! We've come here a handful of times over the past year, and I think what puts them a step ahead of other similar spots is their service. I am a Portillo's rewards member, so pretty often, I get a coupon for a cheese sauce with a fry order or BOGO sandwich or similar. The staff is always so friendly and helpful getting the put in. I've even been there when they are bringing around free samples for folks to try new things. That's just a level of service you won't find at other fast casual chain spots that sets them apart. What I LOVE here: - Hot italian beef of course (sometimes I get as a bowl) with the hot and sweet peppers both - Cheese sauce - fries are simply a vehicle for this perfection - Shakes - cake shake is classic, but I love their others too like the peppermint seasonal one - Of course, can't go wrong with a Chicago dog. To me, the ambiance here is great too. We always end up eating in since the hot italian beef can get messy, and for this type of place, they've put a ton of effort into the decor and ambiance. I tend to stop in to this Portillo's when I'm working in the area since it's closeby a few offices I visit regularly. I always use the drive-thru here and am taken care of quickly with such friendly service. I know this is a place known for beef, but I love the spicy chicken salad. You can get it in the combo too, if you ask for the spicy instead of regular, with no extra charge. If you stop by in the springtime, the lemon cake shake is also to die for. read more

I really enjoy this Portillo's location. Every time I have visited, the food has been good and the service has been solid. The inside has that classic Chicago gangster theme that Portillo's is known for, which I think adds a lot of charm. This location does not seem very busy though, and I have barely ever seen the upstairs seating open, which is a bit of a bummer. It can also feel a little eerie when there are not many people inside. I usually go for the Italian beef sandwich and it never disappoints. I would skip the burgers since they taste a bit plain to me. Hmm... I'm confused. On my visit to the Woodbury location, the Chicago dog and my beef (dipped w/sweet and hot peppers) was cold and inedible, however I tried the Roseville location and was pleasantly surprised! So I didn't have a great experience. I wanted to go to mi sant but we went here instead. I was fine with this but then I ordered the Chicago Dogs. Mmmmmm not good. This is my second time to Portillo's and my first time to the Roseville location. Place is huge and spacious. Different areas for ordering and pickup. Lots of staff around, but honestly, not really available to help or say hello. It look at least 30 minutes for me to get signed up for the rewards program and to apply my free French fry for joining. Crazy how much of a process that was. Visited for a late night Friday dinner. Ordered Chicago dog, onion rings, and French fries. Food was fine. I wish the Chicago dog was much warmer. Onion rings were my favorite side. I could have passed on the French fries. I noticed the chocolate cake slice and knew I had to try that. It was good and if I'm in the mood for a slice of chocolate cake and I'm near a Portillo's I'd stop to get a slice. My friend tried the lemon cake and enjoyed that. I will mention in the restaurant they show slices of chocolate cake that are huge. The Polish dog was pretty burnt and somehow tasted dry? There was no snap to both the Chicago hot and the Polish dog. We were excited to find Portillo's in Minnesota since it's original chain is out of Chicago! My Husband and I tried the big Italian beef, the polish and their chocolate cake shake. The big Italian tasted like it was devoid of flavor. It had all of the components of the Italian beef but lacked the juiciness. My polish dog was quite disappointing. It didn't have any flavor and the polish seem a bit overdone or just sitting under a warmer for too long that it dried out and became rubbery. I got the hot dog combo with fries and a drink. I didn't know what to expect but one bite and I gasped. Won't be back, it was like a carnival, first there is not much direction where to order then once we did we waited 25 minutes for our food to come up down the hallway. While we waited we watched people walking in the door and wondering where to go just like us. I also ordered a slice of their new lemon cake, he said it would likely be a 20 minute wait, I said that was fine as we were eating dinner there also. After 30 minutes went up and asked about the cake but was told there was none ready, I asked if I changed it to chocolate if that would speed things up and was told yes, so I wait 15 more minutes, no cake.
