The cafe has very good food. Near-perfect calamari fritti, and nice pastas. I'm not a huge fan of the waitstaff.

This restaurant is AMAZING! There were 3 people in our party, and we ordered chicken parm, veal parm and the lamb special. All dishes were delicious, and we were given ample portions. It was difficult to find a restaurant in this area, so we were pleasantly surprised. The service was impeccable. Dessert (tiramisu) and coffee were just as delicious as our dinner. Stopped on the way to the airport. Service was a bit slow but we should have told then we were in a rush. Caprese salad was excellent, my angel hair primavera was a little soggy but tasty. Others enjoyed their meals: veal parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, seafood risotto (special). Latter was quite awesome and included part of a lobster! Generous portions and real authentic vibe. Tried this placed based on Yelps reviews and this place was very much a surprise! Has nice outside dinning area and the inside is nice and comfortable. The service was impeccable!!!! The menu was very nice but my wife and I ordered off the specials as they were awesome! My wife had the snapper that they filleted table side. I had a fresh pasta dish and it was very good! My daughter had the claimant and we are travelers and have eaten from NYC to San Fran and back and this by far was the BEST calamari!!! We all had desert and even that was good! My daughter is 5 and during the dinner the waiters played with her! At the end the waiter did two magic tricks for her! Would HIGHLY recommend this place. Two things needs to be updated. They are open for lunch but close and then reopen at 4:30pm for dinner and they offer wifi. read more

I'm from Boston and I've been to all the restaurants in the north end .... they are Simple and sweet compared to this restaurant. The hospitality that is shown at Portobello is bar none the best that I have received. I promise you will not be disappointed, don't bother dressing up because between their food and hospitality you will feel important don't pass this gem up its a must visit if your in philly area!!!! I'm going to start with giving this Italian (not owned by Italians) place four stars based on all the meals except mine. Before we started, I asked the waiter a question about one of the appetizers, and he started to write it down and said so you want the ..... to start, i had to say no I'm only asking a question about it. We started with appetizers; oysters, fried oysters, fried calamari, two salads (served with the appetizers) and Minestrone soup. I asked for a cup of soup and was served a bowl. The Minestrone was good (almost as good as mine which is excellent). The two salads were large and very good. My sister and brother in law said the oysters were good. The calamari was very good; tender and succulent, and the accompanying marinara was very good also. I chose the Veal Saltimbocca, which is one of my favorite veal dishes. Normally I would expect a side of pasta, but got a mix of veggies. My wife ordered the eggplant Parm, which was excellent. My in-laws said their meals were good. Now, on to my meal, Veal Saltimbocca. I have to say this was the worse piece of veal I have had in my life. The meat was grainy and gritty. I gave my wife a piece to try and she agreed, calling it gritty. Good veal, when cooked properly, should melt in your mouth. This was just chewy. When the waiter came over to see how everything was, i told him it was okay, he turned and walked away. My sister in law mentioned that she felt we were being rushed out of the restaurant. When her husband mentioned it to the waiter (third or fourth time he checked on us) he said no problem, just checking. Maybe a little too much attention. For dessert, we had a bindi coppa spagnola, (but should have been a bomba with the cherry in the middle) and the tiramisu, both excellent. Because of the mix up with the cherry dessert, the waiter did bring a bomba on the house. So in summary, I would give the place a second chance, but would never order their veal again. read more

We had a surprise birthday celebration for a friend that turned into one of our most fun nights ever, thanks to the service, attention, and charm of the waiters. The food was, as always, spectacular. I live in Ridley Park and Portabella is, without question, the best restaurant in the area. The food is delicious. I especially love the lamb chops and the bolognese. In fact, I agree with another reviewer - the bologese is the best I've ever had. The prices are reasonable and it's a BYOB. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant. A group of my friends went to an Early Dinner here last night before going to a play in Media. It was not our first time there but were hoping it would not be the usual "RUSH" we seem to always get here. We were wrong and will not be going back. While the food is delicious and presented well, the "STAFF" want you in and out speedily. They are offering boxes before you even finish your meal. We did not order appetizers which seemed to upset our server. We did order coffee, expresso and several desserts. This is at least the second time there was a mistake on the bill. They actually missed an entrée item once and we corrected them. Last night was no different, the bill was not added correctly. Great Italian restaurant, we had Lobster al Diablo and egg plant parmesan. Both were excellent. I was on a business trip with my business partner from Mexico. He could not understand the concept on BYOB and how a restaurant could operate in such a way. One good thing is that a wine and spirit shop is 0.1 mile away in the Walmart shopping center. After hearing about how great Portabello was, I went last night for the first time. I love restaurant's that our BYOB, so we grabbed 2 bottles of wine on the way. There were multiple specials the waiter went through after we sat down. I had the lobster fra diavolo special, it was huge! Mad at myself that I did not take any photos of my dinner. It was a whole lobster layed on top of linguini, sauce was just enough spice! The menu to me was surprisingly long, which I thought was great for multiple options. 4 and a half stars! A lovely little Italian seafood place not far off I-95 south of the airport. They have many meat dishes too but we did not get to try them. Had lunch there and we had 2 specials, the grouper special and the pasta with seafood (shrimp, lobster tail and crab). Both were excellent, fresh seafood, beautifully cooked, with nice sides (vegetables and potatoes). The restaurant itself has some old world charm to it. We tried this place for dinner last night and it was great. It is a small place, but also has outdoor seating that would be wonderful when the weather allows. It's BYOB - we brought a bottle of wine and the waiter immediately asked if it was white or red and brought out a container with ice to keep it chilled. We ordered the mussels cozzi appetizer and I was shocked at the size of the portion. It was huge - definitely a lot of bang for your buck! Our meals were also quite large and very tasty. My husband and I called tonight and got a reservation with no problem. Warm and inviting atmosphere although some of the decor is a bit dated . The staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgable. After pursuing the menu we decided to order from the specials. We shared the mozzarella Caruso which was served warm in a fresh tomato sauce with capers. It was delicious , my husband had a Caesar salad and I had the arugula and goat cheese salad. We were both happy however at 10.95 I believe mine was a little overpriced but the portion was generous. For our entrees I had the Chilean sea bass which was flaky and delicious with a beautiful sear. My husband had the lobster fra diablo which featured a whole lobster. He was very pleased. We shared the limoncello dessert which was my favorite part. It was light and refreshing the perfect way to end a meal but to be honest I wish that I didn't have to share. read more
