If you want a decent seafood dinner for two for under $50 this place isn't bad. BYOB or you could choose from a desirable wine selection. Very friendly wait staff as well. The food seemed to be on the small side for portions, which left my girlfriend and I somewhat hungry when we left. Recently had a reservation. Our party arrived at the designated time and "checked in." A waiter informed us it would be another 5 or 6 minutes before we could be seated. The rather small space was quite crowded. Since there is no bar or other area at which to sit and wait, we were stuck either waiting in the very tiny foyer or outside. A couple chose to go outside, while a couple of us chose to wait. It is very understandable that a popular restaurant may not be able to guarantee quick seating, as some diners tend to linger and can't very well be told to leave. My problem wasn't so much the fact that we ended up waiting a full 30 minutes after the reservation time before being seated, but that the staff barely acknowledged that we were there. Certainly, they were busy. But it cannot hurt or take that much time, every few minutes, to reassure us that we should be seated soon and to thank us for our patience. Upon finally being seated, no one even expressed gratitude for our long wait. In fact, a couple of our party wanted to go elsewhere after the first 10 minutes of being ignored, but were overruled. Seating is tight, but the chairs are padded and comfy. Since the place is pretty small, it does feel rather intimate and "homey." However, the waiter we had (they are all men) came across as kind of haughty and condescending. I do not know if he is aware of it or not, and perhaps he is not actually that way. But it felt that way - to all of us. On occasion, items were delivered to us by other wait staff, who seemed friendlier. A rather stingy basket of bread was delivered to us - considering there were 5 of us. The garlic bread was good. The regular Italian bread seemed a bit dry and slightly stale. There wasn't very much of either. Three of us ordered the Portobello soup at $6 each. It was decent. You could taste the mushroom, but the soup was kind of watery. I expected something a bit creamier and richer. The entrees were solid. For the rather high prices, I felt they weren't necessarily spectacular. My sausage and penne was flavorful. My son had a veal dish that he deemed "okay." A couple of us had mussels, one in red sauce, the other in white. Neither had any complaints as the flavors were good. It may seem like nitpicking, but the mussels themselves were very small; hence, there was not much "meat" in them. The sauce was the saving grace - but it would have been nice to be able to have more bread to dip into it. Admittedly, we did not ask, and perhaps we would have received some had we done so. Three of us got desserts, which were all good. Overall, Portobello seems to be an authentic Italian eatery. As an Italian myself (the most Italian of our party), I definitely got the authentic vibes and flavors I associate with my youth growing up with a mom who loved to cook Southern Italian style. And while I would not go so far as to say we had a bad experience, it wasn't a great experience either. Upon driving back from the restaurant, one of our party who had been an ardent fan based on past experience said that she would not return. I think she felt betrayed because she had highly recommended the place to us and expected that we would all have had a great time there. We still had a good time, overall, among ourselves. But I can understand her disappointment. I am willing to give the place another try sometime, but this first experience doesn't inspire me to hurry back. By all means, if you are into authentic Italian food, check the place out! Just keep your expectations in check. read more

Food was mediocre at best. Oysters were served dry & sandy. Steak was served rare not medium-rare as requested. Bad vibes started from the min we approached the back seating area. We should have left then! Server treated my two children & I as if we weren't good enough to be there. We were not told the specials, then he asked if we needed help with/understood the menu. We go to lots of nice places & this is def not one of them. Even my 13 year old son was unimpressed by the whole experience. My 11year old loves steak, but couldn't even eat more then two bites. When i asked for the check I was told to relax & to give him a minute. So may rude things happened. I can't stress enough the importance of good customer service. You never know who someone might be & shouldn't jump to judge them. Just because we may not look like your normal Delco customer does not mean that we don't belong, or are unfamiliar with a great dining experience, nor that we should be treated as such. I wish we never went to this restaurant. My husband tried reaching out by phone to alert the owners of our experience & was told someone would have to get back to him. Two reasons that I am giving this place 3 stars: 1. Service: The waiter was attentive. In fact, he was so attentive that he was clearly rushing our party of 4 through our meal. He told us that a larger party was coming and he needed our table. What? So when we hadn't quite decided upon our entrees, he said, "OK, I'll give you two more minutes.". Staff continued to circle around our table removing things. It was annoying and hard to enjoy the meal. 2. Décor: The place is so run down. Tables are crammed together, the linens are a hideous color. You feel as though you are in 80 year old widower's row home, and the place hasn't been updated since his wife died 30 years ago. P.S. I really was annoyed about this place once I arrived with my wife. we arrived at the door a 6pm saturday and was told that were no longer serving because they were now closed! I seen this place on late on weekends, and their doors was still open when we left. Ive drove past this place many times since that day and they are always open late past 6pm. First time at this little gem. Picked up a business client at the Phila airport for a quiet meal nearby that was not at a chain location. Found out about Portobello here on Yelp. Parking is a little unclear when you drive up but the food and service are outstanding. I had Portobello Chicken Marsala and it was soooo good, I wanted to lick my plate clean. Service was great and although the place is pretty small, there seemed to be plenty of room for a nice group of tables inside and some larger outside spaces as well. Sorry to disagree with the others that have posted such positive reviews, but this was hardly a five star experience. You know you have been disappointed when the BYOB was the best part of your meal. I was alone, and the service regrettably suffered from the syndrome that takes single diners, places them in the worst seat possible, then ignores them. I ordered ceasar salad and the supposedly "amazing" eggplant parmesan. The salad dressing was good, but the rest would have been forgettable--lettuce with sparing anchovy (I requested them) and no cheese--had it not been for the fact that I realized after eating it that it had plastic bristles in it. I spend the next ten minutes fetching several of them from inside my mouth. Ugh! The eggplant was a great disappointment. It was overbreaded and the breading tasted like unseasoned flour. The accompanying spaghetti was fine, with a pretty tasty sauce. I was ignored throughout dinner until the end, when I got the following three words directed at me in staccato fashion--- "Dessert"? "Box?" "Check?" I tipped accordingly. As many great Italian restaurants are there are in the Philly area....this isn't one of them. read more

I'm Going to HELL for this review, but at least I'm Honest! I heard a lot about this favorite Italian Restaurant outside of Eddystone, PA. Locals Love it. It's been around forever, and the interior shows it. Inside, an outdated interior reveals, Italian paintings, and colors from the 60's & 70's. Walls are dirty and in need of fresh paint. The floors need to be updated. The tables are covered with table clothes (OK), but the early 70's style chairs are filthy and need either recovering, or updating. We made sure we stopped by 4:30 on Good Friday at the first seating. One other couple was there. The Owner ushered us to a table. We were Hovered over to the point where it was uncomfortable. We were there to relax, not to rush. The Owner ran through the specials, not disclosing the prices, (It Happens). I ordered the Calamari, as a first. These were low quality, Calamari Rings, Previously frozen, and served with a Marinara ( Seemed to be Canned Gravy ). The portion was small for the price. I also ordered the Portabella Soup. The Soup presentation was that of muddy water. OK Flavor, however no discernible pieces of Mushroom. The Garlic Bread that was served was a Hoagie Roll, Sliced in half with Oil, and a little parsley. I didn't taste any garlic, and I believe the oil used was vegetable, but I'm not sure. Not Olive Oil. There was also another roll served with diner style butter packets. Can't serve butter in a dish? When asked what I would like, I first ordered the Chops, then quickly asked the Owner if It were too late to change to the Eggplant Parm. He said No Problem, then walked away mumbling nastily in Italian. My Date ordered the Portabella stuffed Ravioli's in which she said was good. My Eggplant was Chewy, Soggy, and was served over spaghetti with too much water on my plate. Another young lady, I'm assuming the Owners Daughter, was very accommodating and attentive. The whole meal seemed like it was being served at your Aunts House. Nothing amazing or Special. It could have been intimate, however the eavesdropping of the owner, made it uncomfortable. Smells musty/damp inside and chairs are rickety . No kids menu so you pay adult entree for kids. Started with small basket of bread for 5 adults and 2 kids, did not return for refill of either. I ordered veal which was ok at best. Kids got linguini and shrimp which was nasty -I should have sent it back. Wife had fish which was tasteless. One appetizer for the table -bill came out to $300. I came here on a whim after my mom and I decided we wanted Italian but were also not in the mood for a chain restaurant type of atmosphere. Upon entering there was a bit of confusion because there was no host to greet us and it was a very tight space to stay waiting without any indication of a "please wait to be seated" sign; had it not taken 5 minutes of standing there with no acknowledgment we obviously would have figured a host would seat us. After we sat, the waiter was quite attentive and polite, although he didn't crack a smile even once. He was knowledgeable about the menu and the specials but was somewhat harsh in telling us it was a BYOB when we tried to order a glass of wine. Being in the industry, I understand the same questions get frustrating but it should never be obvious to the customer that you're clearly irritated. That being said- onto the food: The complimentary bread was a nice touch but somewhat misleading due to the fact garlic bread is also a menu item- either way, it was delicious and soooo fresh! I'm not usually one to care about hoagie roll style bread but the freshness was truly impressive. My mom and I both ordered entrees only. Mom- spaghetti and meatballs with angel hair pasta as a substitute. She raved and raved about the meatballs and freshness of the pasta; she also mentioned how delicious the sauce was! Me- lasagna with meat. After spending 3 weeks in Italy this fall I can honestly say the food here is absolutely comparable to the cuisine overseas. The pasta is light and sooo fresh compared with the standard "Italian" cuisine we are all used to here. The sauce was perfectly sweet, the beef perfectly tender and the cheese was blended so well with all of the other flavors that it may be my new favorite Italian place. There are no Italian restaurants in Ridley area that come close to comparing to this hidden gem for the quality that you receive. All in all, I will be back again. I'd give 5 stars had the one waiter been a little more friendly; even a slight smile would have been nice. read more

This is a little known gem of an Italian Restaurant located in an area not frequented for fine dining. Quaint BYOB with great food and service. Pricey but worth it. Portions are generous and food is lovingly prepared and presented. Everything my wife and I had was excellent. From soups and salads to the entrees, awesome! I had special sausage and bean soup, spring mix with balsamic dressing, and special pasta with lobster shrimp and crab in a fra Diablo red sauce. She had arugula with goat cheese salad, veal saltimboca, and tiramisu dessert. All top notch! I'll be back for the veal chop! Saw them coming out of the kitchen and they looked amazing. Me and my wife went to Portabella's last night for dinner had some soup some prosciutto and melon, I had twin lobster tails cooked to perfection and my wife had New York strip steak with crabmeat it was about a 2 inch cut and It could've fed two people and it was delicious. Don't walk to this place... RUN to it! I have lived nearby for most of my life and never knew this place existed. I can't wait to go back. It was THAT good. For an appetizer we tried the clams casino. They were the best I had ever had because they were made from scratch. No fillers here. Homemade toppings over an entire clam. I had the Veal Chop and my date had the Osso Bucco with risotto. They even gave her a small fork for the marrow. Both were amazing. Both dinners melted in your mouth. Only negative was the coffee. This is the best Italian BYOB in Delco and could give many in philly a run for their money. When my parents come to visit we always take them here and we have never had bad meal. The service is amazing and you can tell they take pride in their restaurant. The eggplant parm is amazing. The linguini pescatore and fettucini portabella are also great. Their portions are huge too! Tiramisu for dessert is a must. They often will bring out an after dinner cordial for you as well is you get dessert and/or coffee. This is a great place for bigger group, family dinner or date night. The also offer an cheaper, smaller lunch portion during the day. If you are heading to Harrah's Chester I would say stop here for a great dinner before you go to the casino. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. read more

Love this place!! Because I work for an airline and commute to Philadelphia, I stay frequently at the Days Inn in Chester. There are not a lot of choices for food and certainly not many places within walking distance where you don't run the risk of being shot! The food is fantastic and the service is wonderful! Wonderful old school Italian food. We ordered Eggplant Parmesan and Spaghetti with Clams. Large portions and so flavorful. Service was great and the atmosphere was perfect for Tony Soprano or a 2017 foodie. We're from Oakand and we can't get this style of food anywhere. I'd love to make a red sauce so intense. We'd also had small cream puffs with strawberries for dessert and they matched the excellence of the entrees. Nice find. We like to be frequent customers. read more
