Just had an awesome family dinner here. For a pretty small place, they were super accommodating of our large party (we had two full tables). The staff was pretty patient with our big groups; some of them were more friendly than others, but nothing negative enough to affect the night. The food was absolutely delicious. We got tons of appetizers and everyone was really happy with their meals. Best apps we got were definitely the calamari and the caprese. The calamari was perfect. The tri-color, we were told was actually bi-color and would include avocado, fresh mozz, and roasted green peppers. It came out with tomato instead of avocado, which I was kind of bummed about. I got over it quickly. I had the grilled whole Bronzino and it was fantastic. I have always loved this place. Every time I think they can't out do them selves they prove me wrong. I had the Cioppino (seafood stew) over linguine. What was more unbelievable is that they charge $8 per bottle to open wine. They even charge for twist offs!! We had an extra $40 charge on the bill because we had 5 bottles of wine. What a ridiculous charge! $8 per table, not bottle, would be understandable!!! When asked why they charge that fee per bottle, we were told that if the glasses break, they need to replace them? What? We asked clams in white sauce, lobster ravioli in lobster sauce , seafood linguine in marinara sauce, penne pasta and pasta in mushrooms sauce. All the sauces were delicious. Also my father's favorite restaurant in the Delaware County.The foods consistently good/great and getting what you want is possible even if it is not on the menu. The food was amazing for my family members birthday! We were late about 30 minutes to our reservation and called ahead to explain they sounded welcoming on the phone but definitely not in person. The first thing the waiter mentioned is that we were late and then continued to mess up multiple orders including cold food. I came alone to treat myself for a birthday dinner on a weeknight. One of the servers literally laughed when I said it was just me. He scrambled to choose a table for me and sat me in a corner near the kitchen. Cozy little place, but I felt extremely awkward having to sit near the server station and there were only two other families when I arrived. After this it just got worse. That same server, who I also assumed was the owner, continued his judgmental "service" the rest of the night. I watched him give all his attention to the families, explaining the specials to them and asking how their food was. He did none of that for me. Luckily the other server noticed I was being neglected and eventually offered me a box after I had been sitting for at least 10 minutes after finishing my meal. I ordered the bruschetta, which was ok but nothing special. Also ordered their version of chicken Marsala which came with a choice of soup or salad. I chose what the server told me was "Italian wedding," but it definitely was not. No meatballs and filled with a ton of vegetables. My entree was good but quite overpriced. I had been looking forward to this treat as I have been eyeing the restaurant since I moved here. As stated in someone else's review, the service shouldn't be based on if they assume you're "good enough" to dine there. I was dressed in my work clothes while the families getting better service were wearing sports jerseys and jeans. The cheesecake was awful. The chairs were stained. The pork chops were excellent. Worth going back.? NO!!. I can get good cream of mushroom soup in Kennett Square, and if I wanted a frozen meatball, I would go to Costco. To top it off, we had a $70 gift certificate, our bill was $59. and the guy made sure to tell us the tip would not be included on the certificate. I've driven past this place dozens of times......use to go to the previous restaurant that was there. Finally.....after reading other reviews on Yelp we decided to check it out. Wow..... Firstly......I love the host and staff.....they are funny, nice and have that traditional Italian attitude. The food was slightly pricey but well worth it. I had the steamed clams in white wine sauce.....clams were unbelievably fresh. My main course was filet mignon topped with crab meat. The crab was fresh (not pasteurized) and the filet was perfectly charred on the outside and rare on the inside. Wifey had the linguine pescatore and I have to say it was the best I've ever tasted. Her salad was watermelon endive and arugula.....I didn't try it but she raved about it. Finally the tiramisu was amazing....light yet not too sweet. What are u waiting for? Go! Now! We traveled a distance to try this restaurant because of the reviews. Our experience was very different and very disappointing! The mushroom soup was good if you don't mind a smooth soup. The lasagna was so salty it was inedible and the meat was really hard to find in the dish. The red snapper special at a hefty $29 was 4 ounces at best with a small side of pasta. I do not understand all the negative reviews. My husband and I went to Portobello Cafe last night for dinner and had a great time. First of all, the restaurant is adorable. It is small, so you should definitely make reservations (we did). When I arrived, I was greeted by a very friendly man who asked if he could help me and I said we had a reservation for 2, to which he replied "Christine?" We were promptly seated at a 2 top. Our server explained the specials and had a fairly thick Italian accent but was happy to repeat when I did not understand. I ordered the artichoke appetizer special and my husband ordered the Calimari alla Luciana. Both were delivered promptly and they were so delicious. Our entrees were the Cod special (accompanied with tomatoes, shrimp, mussels, and calamari) and the Veal Saltimbocca. Both were very tasty and the portions were generous. For dessert, we got espressos and Spumone dipped in a dark chocolate shell. The duration of our dinner was about an hour and a half. We had a wonderful time and the food was excellent. I love this place! We come to this area about twice a year for business and did not find this great place before. We will be back. It is BYOB so stop at the State liquor store over in the strip mall a block down first and them to great Italian food. Appitizers: Clams casino. Try them. Unlike most places that use clam bits, these were clearly made on site with whole clams. Delicious. I had the Veal and it was a huge portion and excellent. Ny husband loved the Portabella soup. We found the service perfectly fine, but it was a Tuesday night. I can see how on a Friday or Saturday when the place is packed, it can be slow. Just klnow that and order agead and enjoy your wine. What a really nice place. The food is delicious and the staff is very attentive. We arrived without a reservation. They informed us that there was a cigar dinner planned for 7:00 (45 minutes after we arrived) but that they would still seat us. We told them that we didn't mind cigar smoke, and they gave us a table. The waiter offered appetizers and specials, and we selected the shrimp lobster crab pasta dish with the tuna and arugula appetizer. The food was excellent! I am definitely going again! I love this place! It is not very well known and kind of off the beaten path if you're not from the area - but the food is worth the trip. We've been there several times in the last year, always ordering something different and always loving the food. The service can sometimes be a little slow - I think there are only 1 or 2 servers on staff but it is a small place and we're never waiting very long and their personality and service with a smile makes up for any delay. Everything we ordered was well above average, it's a nice place for any occasion, and there's plenty of parking. We went during a slower time of day, but I would still recommend making reservations.
