I have been a customer here and lived in the neighborhood for 11 years. I will never be back. I went in to print a mailing label for a box I was sending out. I taped the boxes at home and bought one other item. They charged me a dollar for 2 pieces of tape to attach the label. I asked about it, considering I just paid to print the label and the box was already taped. The owner was incredibly rude, and the woman working there (who didn't take her sunglasses off and looked like she was on drugs) started arguing with me. They will both ruin that business. Avoid this location. I went in on Friday to have a packet of papers shipped by next day air on Fed Ex. I paid over $70 to do this and have it delivered by Saturday. I had important legal documents that needed to be signed prior to the end of the year and needed to ensure they got to the final destination on time. On Monday, I checked with the recipient only to find out that they never received the items. I called back the location and they tracked down the package -- which was still in their store. They never shipped it with the carrier and never let me know. They said that the package will be shipped today and make it there by tomorrow (we'll see). But when I asked about getting a refund for the $70+ I had to pay when they didn't deliver my package next day, they said, "Don't worry, you won't have to pay extra (even though it's now getting shipped 3 days later)." read more

Honestly if this place wasn't up there street I would NEVER come here. THE WORST customer service, you would think the owner would take more pride in the employees he has working. The lady here is miserable and rude to at least the female customers. I've been here many times with her rude ass attitude and then here comes a man behind me and she is the most pleasant woman ever. Warning. Did not disclose that they charge a lot more than a real post office. My package was over $11 USPS Ground and less than $6.00 from the post office. Even a first class stamp was over .60 rather than .49 at the post office. I was able to ship next day priority mail for $6.65 from home! read more

This is the most overpriced Postal Annex I've ever been to in my life. And the staff, while kind and friendly, are either completely uninformed or they're being pumped full of crap by the owner. I sent a box to England for delivery in 6-10 business days and it cost me almost $60. SIXTY DOLLARS. I realize that there's a mark-up for the convenience of using an annex like this and not going to the post office, but $60!? Come ON. It was just a little 1.5-2.0 lb. box. She insisted that it's competitive with the post office, that it's only a slight mark-up. Well, I said to hell with you (not out loud, of course!) and took the same package to the USPS where I sent it for a whopping $27. And this wasn't the first time that Annex's mark-up has been exorbitant. In a pinch, I decided to give them another go one day when I HAD to get some packages out. I was charged $24 to mail a 1 pound envelope MEDIA RATE to Canada. Media Rate! That's like, the cheapest, slowest possible rate. When I got home, I tallied the shipping on USPS.com and it would have only been like $9.50. Maybe it's because they're in Banker's Hill, maybe it's because they just want to charge a lot, but they either don't know what the post office is charging or they just don't care. TLDR: Simply dropped a package with the shipping already paid for, so I didn't have to worry about any price gouging (can't confirm the other reviews mentioning that). However, I needed a single piece of packing tape, and they wanted to charge me $1. Okaaay... so I didn't have cash, and there's a $5 minimum on cards. So I bought some packing tape. Not very friendly. Looks dingy in there. They had images of Donald Trump with the phrase "We Will Overcome"on some of their signage. So... I'm happy to never ever go there again. read more

I had mailed a package for my friend from here via FedEx and paid for it in cash. 2 months later my friend began to get bills from FedEx for this package that I'd paid for. It took months to resolve and The Postal Annex had no records of my having paid nor would assist when I faxed them the receipt. I'll not use them ever again! The local postal annex! Pros-I live very close by and is convenient to use when I need to send a package. Cons-expensive! I know shipping in general is pricey and this place is no exception. I am not a fan of businesses not allowing you to make a purchase with a credit card if it is under $5, this is 2011, everyone takes credit cards no matter what the cost. I was willing to pay a 50 cent upcharge to cover their fees but no. I had to buy 2 sharpies to make up the difference to get over the $5. All I wanted was a box of envelopes. Sharpies do come in handy but still the point being is it is silly to not accept a credit card based on the amount purchased. So in short my $3 purchase turned into a $7 purchase, thus I dub thee 2 Stars!!! read more

I stopped by this location to drop off my postage paid package that was missing a small piece of packing tape. I asked the gal at the counter for a small strip, and she had the nerve to charge me $1 for once teensy piece of tape. After a long list of reasons not to return to this awful Postal Annex (they lose mail, they overcharge for package delivery, they undercharge for overnighters so the package gets returned to sender and is then late, etc. Nightmare.), I went back today because it's so dang convenient. WOW. I never thought I would actually have the heart to rate anyone with 1 star, but this Postal Annex deserves it. EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE says it all. I usually go to an actual fedex center to send all my packages and always have an easy time, but because this PostalAnnex was down the street from my work I decided to do a quick drop off at this location. NEVER AGAIN UNLESS I AM DESPERATE WILL I BE RETURNING HERE!! The lady working behind the counter was so rude and for no reason at all!! I use this location because its close to my house but its really not worth the headache it causes me. Many many times I have received other peoples mail in my box. This concerns me, b/c odds are, others are getting mine as well. When Ive called about the issue they say "yeah, the owner does it, Ill try to double check in the future" Doesnt solve my problem! Also, I just went in to pick up my mail, had them double check that the package we were waiting on hadnt arrived, they said it hadnt. When I called in about all the mail mix-ups, they informed me we had more mail and a package! Sooo frustrating! I pay them to collect my mail and shove it in a box for me, how is this complicated? I can't attest to the previous administration --- but just glad to see that this place has nice people who want to help you. The 2-star rating does not represent what I experienced today. If the customer service is consistent like Carl's, there is no reason why they wouldn't get 5-stars every time. All businesses deserve a second chance --- but ratings on the internet as you know is not so forgiving; but please give them another shot (support small/local businesses in SD post-pandemic!) Oh, another plus is there's lots of public parking around. Down the street is also balboa park, a huge dog park, and restaurants you can check out. Thought it would be nice to support this neighborhood store and have a new favorite place to ship items. Had an important package to send that needed to be there on time for a special event. Front desk person told me that a certain Fed Ex was the the only way to guarantee it gets there on time. So purchased the method she said was the only way to do it. After checking tracking, the package was lost and stuck in So Cal for over 2 days and ended up arriving 2 days late. It was supposed to arrive a day early. Kept calling Postal Annex and was told nothing they could do. The person to receive the gift had already left the area and it never arrived for the event. Spoke to Postal Annex who told me to submit a claim. All I wanted was a refund for the shipping. Owner called me and wouldn't back up the promise. Nice guy and friendly but kept me on the phone explaining why he was new and couldn't afford to give a refund. Hadn't had his own business very long and didn't understand the concept of refunding a small amount to keep a new customer or how much business he was losing over a few dollars. Kept saying that there was only one other method that really guaranteed delivery on time. That 95% of the time, the method she chose would get there but it wasn't really guaranteed. I said that I had made it clear I needed 100% guarantee. Challenged me that if I had known how much it would cost for 100% guarantee, would I have really paid it? I kept saying YES, I would have to pay a premium--that's how important it was to get it there on time. The destination had to send me back the item so I had to pay shipping 2 ways and never got the package there for the person to receive it for the event. A college graduation party where the recipient was only in the state for the party. At the end, he said he can't afford to refund but will give me a credit from the store by email. I tried to explain that you don't build new customer trust by insisting the person come back to your store and spend in order to be made whole and I just wanted the good faith of a refund and he would have a faithful customer. He said he would only offer a refund that was spent in his store. Promised to send the credit as soon as he got off the phone. That was 5/24/22 and 8 months later, still waiting. Sad that he didn't understand that it was the perfect way to lose a good customer. I have had businesses and I know you have to suck it up and let go of that fear when you are a new owner and you get so much more in return. Too bad because he seemed like a basically nice guy and I wanted to help a new business owner. He seemed genuinely interested in correcting the mistakes of his employees because that particular employee did not have good customer service skills. Slow, unfriendly, kept asking the same questions over and over and then promising something that wasn't really a promise. As nice as the owner was, he didn't keep his promise either. Like I said, 8 months and still waiting for a credit I would now never use anyway. Hope he's learned since then. DON'T GO HERE FOR NOTARY. Older man Ron is the worst notary possible and tried to charge me for 28 different pages when I only needed one notarized. I told him politely that this was unethical at $15/per notary and he literally laughed. I walked out. Yeah, this place is wild. Couldn't believe the older gentleman working in there yesterday, on Friday, 7/5, told me why don't I drop my envelope off myself instead of trying to FedEx it for a Monday delivery, like he's in charge of my busy lifestyle. So I gathered myself. I was like is he serious? Did he really just turn me away? Are businesses that easy to keep open these days? Does he have a trust fund and this job he does for kicks? And why do I need to convince him that I really need to FedEx something? Unbelievable. All that ran quickly through my mind. I looked at my kid and said, "Shall we go somewhere else?" Written to Ownership "I am contacting you due to an issue I had at your PostalAnnex+ location in Banker's Hill on Laurel St and 5th AVE. The female attendant there is extremely rude. I arrived to ship a package. The package was fully prepared and sealed. I arrived and asked that the package be shipped with whomever, but that it be insured. This person asked what the value I wanted the package insured for. I said the item is valued at $1000.00. She laughed and said "What is it?" I explained that it was a wristwatch. She said "Why $1000? It's just a watch". I said that most of my watches are $25000 and asked why the attitude? She said "It's just a watch." She slide a form pad to me on the counter and said "You need to fill this out. It's a waiver that says you are sending something, and I have no idea what it is. You say it's a watch, but I don't believe you.
