The staff that we had for our visit was very friendly, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. It's an older part of town and it was a back up option for another restaurant we were going to try to visit that ended up being closed. There's one sandwich choice for vegetarians: The Mediterranean. It's all right, but for a "Big", it's quite a bit more than for a similarly sized vegetarian sandwich at Erbert and Gerbert's (in early 2020: about $8.75 for Potbelly versus about $6.50 at the Erbert & Gerbert's a block away. Prices are with sales tax.) (Note: I originally incorrectly estimated $6 for the Erbert and Gerbert's example.) The benefit of Potbelly is that you get your sandwich toasted. Yay. It also takes longer and their line system is inefficient on top of it. Let me give you an everyday example at Potbelly: Wait in line to order, stage 1. I order a Mediterranean sandwich, big on wheat bread. "Do you want chicken on it?" No. Wait in line, stage 2. Sandwich maker makes the sandwich and asks about toppings and then they make it. You get your sandwich. Wait in line to pay, stage 3. You have to tell the cashier what your sandwich is. "Is it with chicken or without?" Without. Then pay. Compare that to nearly every other counter place: you wait in line, you order your sandwich, specify any special toppings or omissions and pay for it. Wait while they make it. They make it and give it to you. The crowd goes wild. Which seems like a more effective system for the customer and employees? Who reinvented the wheel at Potbelly? read more

I go through Potbelly crazes every few months as I work just a few blocks away. It's easy, cheap (especially if you get the Skinny's! You seriously can't beat that price), and there are sooo many options. It's way better than subway, not as salty as Jimmy Johns, and cheaper than anywhere else nearby! The shop is always clean, the staff is nice, and you get a coupon on your receipt pretty much any time to entice you to return back. (That's how they get me). Their shakes or smoothies are also amazing for an afternoon treat. Grab the shorty size for a cheaper and smaller snack. The Oreo smoothie is the bomb. read more

The only reason this shop lost a star from my review was because of the staff. Unfortunate for me, the store in Dinkytown is the closest to me so I have been in there several times. Visited Potbelly for the first time today, and ordered 5 different sandwiches for a variety of folks. Ordered online through there website, which was very easy to use, and easy to customize a variety of sandwiches too. Restaurant was really empty when we went, but it was clean and pretty easy location to find. Parking is on the street. Food was ready on time, and overall the quality was fine for the price. I personally ate the Chicken and Cheddar sandwich, and while it wasn't amazing, it did satisfy my hunger. "Meh. I've experienced better." pretty much sums up my thoughts on Potbelly. Mainly because better sandwiches exist in the realm of Dinkytown/Stadium Village. Potbelly is okay. It's cheap, for one. Also their sandwiches are served warm, which is nice in colder months for sure. In the years I've known Potbelly, though, I swear the quality of ingredients has gotten worse. Their sandwich selections are boring. They got rid of a lot of good milkshake flavors (the orange dreamsicle milkshakes they used to have were amazeballs). Also, the line takes forever if there are 4+ people in it. I get that the sandwiches are heated, etc., but if I'm just stopping in for a quick sub on my way home from class, it can get irritating. I'm not expecting Jimmy John's speeds, but still. I will say that their employees are always super friendly and conversational, while at Jimmy John's they often give off the "I'm better than you because I ride a fixie" vibe. But, I am absolutely done with ordering delivery form the Dinkytown Potbelly. My co-workers and I have had delivery from here, and we've used it for catering of small events. Without exception, the delivery has taken at least 45 minutes and the driver has often gotten lost. I can usually cut some slack, but our office is just down University Avenue at the other end of campus! When I forget/get too lazy to make my lunch I usually come to Potbelly for their Mushroom Flat and an Oreo Shake. The flats provide the perfect break to meat ratio and are very filling! Their house peppers are very unique and provide just the right amount of heat and flavor to all their sandwiches. Their shakes are delicious! My favorite is Oreo but Oreo and Strawberry combination is a close second. They make them with real ice cream so they are very creamy. My favorite part of the shake is that they add on a few tiny cookies on the lid to enjoy with your shake. My meals are always accurately made and fresh. But they went ahead and charged me over $22 for the food I would never get. This was in Sept. of last year(2017). I have called four times over the past four months. Honestly, I'll never get sick of Potbelly. I like the uproar they "created" when they moved in here and "kicked out" the Purple Onion. Come on, guys. The Purple Onion got a brand new building. So I was very pleased when it came near the U of M during my college years. You can never go wrong with the Wreck though the meatball sub is pretty good too! For instance, they didn't deliver to the area I was in but when I went to pick up the food instead, they gave us two free cookies... their way of saying "sorry." For a sandwich chain Potbelly has a pretty good selection of made from scratch menu items. Their oatmeal cookie is truly one if my top dessert chives. They bake the cookies fresh so they come out warm and gooey...just the way they are supposed to. I like to order the wreck flat toasted twice with all go the toppings. Not really a fan of their sandwich bread though..pretty generic and same texture as subway. The Potbelly at the U has a cool personality and is tailored to the students. There's always some type of acoustic performance happening in the shop as well. read more

I too did not expect much when this place opened and I went in for the first time, but to my delight, the $5 meal was not only high quality but tasted amazing. I'm not sure what complaints people have with this place, as it is in a wonderful location, and it's like a high quality subway, but for the same price.
