I had heard a lot about Lu's Sandwiches, so I decided to finally give it a try. When you walk in, it has a bit of a Chipotle style setup with the ordering counter. The service was normal and the restaurant itself was clean. There were a lot of people inside eating, which seemed like a good sign. I ended up ordering the classic chicken banh mi. Honestly, I was not that impressed. I have had a lot of banh mi sandwiches before, and this one tasted pretty average to me. The seasoning on the chicken was a bit overpowering after a while and did not feel very balanced. The pricing was also a little higher than I expected for what I got. Very true Viet Banh Mi that you would get in Vietnam. The taste and everything is very authentic even the bread. The banh mi bread in actual Vietnam is very terrible and this bread taste pretty similar to that in Vietnam. Other places that make their bread are more of a French style bread and it's a little crispier and not as flaky. This one here was very flaky. The meats were cut on the thinner side than most banh mi places so I couldn't really taste the meat. I feel like it is cut thinner than the other Lu's off Eat Street. I believe that I had the best Bahn Mi of my entire life here. We both got the Cold Cut Bahn Mi with hot sauce. We also got the pork egg rolls. They were delicious, and we'll get two orders the next time. One each was not enough. The dipping sauce was a perfect match. Now onto this heavenly sandwich. From the first bite, my mouth was like, whaaaaaaaa???? The hot sauce was a nice foil to the mayonnaise. Both were meant to be on this sandwich. The baguette was PERFECT Crispy, crunchy exterior with a soft, not doughy, inside that gently held the sandwich ingredients. The sandwich is a good size, and could easily become two meals. I was hella greedy and ate the entire thing in one sitting. The idea of leaving any of this sandwich for later seemed like I would have lost my mind. Well, I kinda did lose my mind while eating this sandwich. I've eaten a lot of Bahn Mi over the course of my life, and I have never before heard an angelic chorus when I bit into one. This one had the clouds parting, and a Divine Light shining down on this work of sandwich art. This place is not far from where I live, as well. I am soooooo annoying about Lu's. When I first moved to Minnesota a couple of years ago, this was probably the place I ate at most (not necessarily this location, but I've been to all three locations and they're all great). The sandwiches are HUGE and incredible bang for your buck--my go-to is the large vegetarian tofu ($10.75), which had a delicious curry tofu. Their meat bánh mì mi come with pâté if you're into that, but I'm perfectly happy with my pâté-less sandwich myself. The big thing for me about Lu's as compared to other places is they have this house-made garlic mayo(?) they use on all of their sandwiches that is LITERALLY to die for--I've had garlic mayo on other bánh mì but none of it compares to the stuff Lu's has. It's soooo buttery and adds a really nice richness to the sandwich that's a perfect balance to the heap of extra pickled veg that I always add. Even though I've only ever tried the curry tofu sandwich, Lu's has quite literally never steered me wrong and I'm always excited every chance I get to stop by. For this location in particular, there's also a nice free covered parking lot around the side, which is a huge plus in my book--signs outside the building will point you there! read more

We were in the neighborhood and decided to stop by for a bun mi sandwich. They have 2 different size bread, regular and large. I went with the large and it was huge once she put everything together. We ordered the cold cut and added grilled pork. One side of the bread has pate and the other side is the special mayo. The layout is just like subway, the person behind the counter will ask you if you want all the toppings or if you're picky just tell her. We also ordered the thai tea to drink with. Definitely the place to come if you're looking to get multiple meals out of an entree! I always get the rice bowls and it'll last me two meals. Everything was great, the meats were flavorful (meatball was my favorite but grilled pork was also very good), the pate was delicious. Wish there were more pickled veggies/jalapenos, and the bread was a bit soft, but still a very very enjoyable banh mi. One of my favorite spots to run into when biking or just running around doing errands. Quick in and out, the standard Bahn Mi is absolutely delicious and the egg rolls are a nice extra side order. Lu's Sandwich is an unassuming fast casual restaurant, located at the heart of the Northeast neighborhood in Minneapolis that is definitely worth a visit. The actual restaurant is very straightforward with no frills. You order at the front on an iPad, and then sit down and wait for your food. Takeout is also extremely popular here so be prepared for a bit of a line, although they move really fast here. Food: You have to get a banh mi when you come here. For those unfamiliar, a banh mi is an extremely popular Vietnamese sandwich consisting of meat, Mayo, pate, some pickled vegetables, cilantro, and a few other things tossed onto a baguette. Lu's just nails this perfectly and for a very reasonable price. The baguette is incredibly fresh and fluffy on the inside while still being crusty on the outside. The sandwiches are HUGE and packed with so much flavor. I absolutely love these and around $7-9, it's hard to beat this in Minneapolis. Drinks: I am a huge fan of Thai tea so I have to get it every time I see it on the menu. Overall it was pretty good Thai tea, but is definitely outshined by the delicious banh mi. It is definitely on the above average side of Thai tea in the Twin Cities area, but definitely not a must get. Finally got around to trying Lu's in Northeast, and it met the hype!! They offer banh mi sandwiches as well as bowls, and a few sides like egg rolls and Thai tea. It's a smaller menu, but they do it all well! The Thai tea with boba was great, and I would totally recommend as a drink if you want to treat yourself to something sweet! The sandwich was also tasty, and all of the vegetables inside were super crisp which I appreciated! The vegetables, in combination with the baguette, made it feel like the perfect light lunch. The sauces were also awesome, but my friend added avocado to her sandwich and I will absolutely be doing that in the future! It helped cut some of the spice from the jalapeños. I tried the chicken which was good, but I would also try something new to branch out in the future! They have free parking which is amazing in Northeast. We sat on the patio to enjoy our sandwiches, but the restaurant also smelled amazing if you ever get the chance to eat inside in a COVID-free future. Great banh mi sandwiches. Stopped in here as the place across the street didn't have inside seating and I hadn't had a banh mi in a long time. Ordered the pork banh mi and a mango smoothie with the jellies. Sandwich had a great roll, crunchy vegetables and great flavor. I though they were a little heavy handed on the carrots, but I know from the ordering system I can get less on my next visit. The meat was nice and tender and had a very good flavor. The sandwich was more than I personally could handle so I used a fork to eat all of the fixings and 1/2 of the roll. The mango smoothie was very good, a very nice flavor and lasted me all the way home on the bus to north Minneapolis. Had the receipt emailed to me so I could look at the detail at home. They automatically add on a 9.00% Employee Retention Service Fee. The ordering system is a touch pad as you enter the store so you can customize the sandwich and your order as you see fit. This place is gross now. I used to go here a lot and it was great, but I gave it a couple tries recently to make sure it wasn't just a bad day. First off, the cleanliness is worrisome. The people preparing your food are wearing gloves, but doing everything in them and not changing them out (operating the touchscreen, then putting their hand straight into the fresh veggie containers when there are tongs). They don't seem to tidy up the prep areas. Also, honestly, if it at least tastes good I would have bumped the rating up, but the beef and pork in the bowls tasted like they overcrowded the grilltop when they cooked then (boiled taste and texture). Such a bummer, I loved this place. Just go to an old school Vietnamese place instead. This place is just coasting off their former good reputation. read more

Lu's is hands down my favorite place for banh mi! The bread is perfect, the ratio of protein and veggies are fair and they have one of the best Vietnamese iced coffee (just the perfect balance of bitterness from the French press coffee & sweetness from the condensed milk for me). I usually get the chicken banh mi but they also have tofu & mock duck that I also have tried and liked. Tbh- I have only been to Lu's once but have had their delicious mouth watering banh mi, bowls, and spring rolls several times- catered through work and I'm excited everytime! Although I do think $7 is a bit more than other places for banh mi- it is worth it and the staff are super friendly! Definitely coming back to this simple but delicious shop! It's great how you can pick and choose what you want on your sandwich (Subway style). I love cilantro and added a lot more to mine (happy me). The tofu itself I thought was okay...I've had better tofu in a banh mi before. I wish there was more sauce in my sandwich. I could've asked for more but I added some sriracha and some other sticky red sauce that was available. Made the sandwich taste a lot better. Overall, this place deserves a 4/5 because prices are fair and the ingredients seemed fresh. I love me a good banh mi, but unfortunately, the food fell flat for me at Lu's. I ordered the eggs rolls and the grilled beef banh mi for curbside pick up. The egg rolls were ok, you can't find a better deal than $3.50 for two, but you get what you pay for. The texture wasn't my favorite and the flavor of the filling was just kind of blah. Thank goodness for the fish sauce for some flavor! I was hoping for better, but upon biting into the grilled beef banh mi, I could instantly tell that ingredients, except for the bread, weren't fresh. The beef has good flavoring but the texture of the meat and other fillings was a dead giveaway that they weren't fresh. The pickled carrots, daikon, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeños had a sad, disappointing, non-crisp crunch. There were also green onions on there, which I thought was kind of strange. I would hope that this is a one time deal amid the pandemic aka less orders are being placed so the food is not as fresh, but I probably won't order again until the pandemic is over. If you like Bahn Mi this is your place. The menu is simple and easy to navigate. We tried the meatball and pork Bahn Mi sandwiches and both were delicious. I will say the pork option had a more authentic taste and brought me back to the delicious Bahn Mi I ate on the streets of Ho Chi Minh. The regular sized subs were actually quite large, and also affordable making this a great option to fill up quickly on a budget without sacrificing quality. Refreshing, crisp and delicious My 17 year old was so confused and not sure about what to order so she ordered a mango smoothie She eventually stole my salad when we got home and can't stop taking about how good the salad was. Lu's is my go-to banh mi place in the Twin Cities! I usually get either the cold cut or grilled pork banh mi's, which are very classic and well done. The pate is particularly good. The bread is also nice and crisp, with just the right filling to bread ratio (although sometimes it's a bit lopsided and I have to even it out). For only $1-2 more, I always get the large size and am stuffed (but the leftovers hold up decently well in the fridge if you need). The spring rolls are quite good too. She let me know they refuse to give out extra mayonnaise, unless it was placed directly on the sandwich. (Which i ordered) I asked if she was serious and she rudely said yes. The concept is good and the sandwiches are also a nice value. You can get a jumbo banh mi here for under $8. Toppings are fresh and service is nice. Outdoor tables are pleasant. I wish they would use real banh mi bread, or any flaky bagette bread for that matter. The soft roll makes me feel sad.
