I recently visited Potbelly Sandwich Works and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. The sandwiches were okay in terms of taste, but very sloppy and messy, making them hard to enjoy. What stood out more was the customer service. The staff seemed disengaged and unmotivated, like they didn't want to be there. At one point, I even saw an employee toss a completed sandwich onto the counter, which came across as unprofessional and careless. After my visit, I looked through reviews from the past couple of years and noticed multiple people have complained about the same issues with service. It's disappointing to see that nothing seems to have improved. Overall, the experience didn't meet expectations, and I hope the management takes these concerns seriously and makes some changes. read more

There are a ton of options for lunch downtown so I don't find my way here often... staff is not very accomodating and I usually like to get mine to-go even though there is nice patio seating out front. Stopped here for lunch today. When ordering you talk to 3 different people. The first guy you tell your order to and he just gets the bread, then you go to the second person and she asks you what you ordered and you then tell her your toppings, and then the third person is at check Out.. again repeating your order. All 3 had different attitudes. One really nice, the second grumpy, and the third in between. I ordered the Italian sub which was okay. I wished they had asked me if I wanted it toasted or not. We were looking for a place to go for a family of 5 that also wouldn't have us draw on our 401(k) to feed them. The food was good and the kids enjoyed their sandwiches. The people were nice and helped us out on guiding us as to their process of making the sandwiches because it seems like every place has their own way of doing things. Good. But expensive. Workers need to be a bit friendlier. But it's open late and food is good.

Lunch hotspot especially during the winter. It's well laid out, though there isn't a ton of handicap accessible seating (one table, literally). They have a ton of seating upstairs and in the summer the patio seating is fair, though as others have noted, it's right off of the Archives Navy Metro station and therefore prone to panhandlers. The atmosphere here is great, the layout is solid and makes it easy to get in and out. Most importantly, they don't have the loser crew on here. Everyone wears their hairnet and gloves, everyone is super nice, and my food is always correct. Much better than the one in Union Station and the one in Chinatown. Bonus is their chicken pot pie soup, which feels like a warm hug on this cold day--okay I'm not used to the cold, so today and everyday is cold to me lol. read more

I love Potbelly's. It is one of my favorite chains. Their sandwiches are actually quite delicious and the one of the few sandwich places that I'd be willing to pay for a sandwich! This location is one I've never been to but the service was great and we sat outside and it was quite nice. Parking is on the street and you have to pay for it if you're in the area. I think you should check it out if you're in the tourist mood and need a break from going to the museums or just downtown to take it all in. read more

Consistently good sandwiches. Online order process is easy and convenient. I'm a fan of Potbelly. Aside from its convenient location near my job, I like Potbelly because they are reasonably-priced, because they make good sandwiches, and because I can order online and skip the super long in-person line that can be a real drag. I don't think I've ever spent more than $8 here. I like their flatbread sandwiches and their skinnies a lot. Their chili is okay but nothing to write home about. Their "smoothies" are really more like milkshakes because they make them with vanilla ice cream. (I'm not a fan.) When I order online, I just walk right up to the "pay here for online orders" counter, and they hand me my food. They typically get my order correct, and I'm back at work in no time. I showed up last night at about 4:35 which I thought was plenty of time before close at 5 (which is an odd closing time) but the service ended up taking almost 25 minutes. There was one person in front of me but only 1 worker helping customers which is why it took so long. That one worker was super nice and apologized multiple times, he seemed newer but still did a really good job by himself. He deserves a raise. The other woman employee spent 15 minutes in the bathroom, once out, going straight to the back and not helping me despite the male employee helping the other customer at the cash register. I understand that you are about to close, maybe things need cleaned, but every place I've ever worked at the customer always comes first, no matter if they come in 1 minute before close. Either the management needs to have more staff members to close or to find a better 2 employees who can competently close the store and care for customers. read more

This place was conveniently located just down the street from the National Archives. Before heading there, we decided to have lunch here and also to try out their supposedly "delicious" cookies. Although it was busy with people in business suits on their lunch breaks, the line moved quickly. The restaurant is two stories and has outside seating so there were plenty of available tables. We ordered a Mediterranean chicken, a pizza sandwich, turkey breast and a Wreck (salami, turkey, roast beef and ham). I also had a cup of their loaded baked potato soup. My sandwich was the Mediterranean chicken and I have to say, I was not a fan. But I was hungry and I managed to somehow get through it. I did like the bread, though. The loaded baked potato soup tasted like warm milk with about 7 small chunks of potato in it - nothing about it screams "loaded" to me. It was watered down and tasteless. The rest of the crew ate their sandwiches with no complaints, but they didn't rave about it either. I mean, they're sandwiches. I'm not a sandwich connoisseur, but with the name "Potbelly", I was expecting some outstanding, unique sandwiches. Unfortunately, not here. I'm not from DC. The only Potbelly I'm familiar with is the one I'm currently cultivating just above my belt. So when a friend was running out to grab us some food, I didn't know what I wanted. One of my companions who was familiar with the selections simply said, "You want the Wreck." Who was I to argue? It came back fresh and hot, piled high with a few different types of meat, hot peppers, and enough oil that it was soaking through the paper. I loved it. And evidently it only cost about $5. I bet most folks can already rattle off what my order was here before even reading the rest of my review, but what makes this Potbelly pretty awesometastic isn't just their affordable, filling grub. I walked in wiped from an entire afternoon of being on the phone, traipsing all across town and fresh out of a half dozen back-to-back meetings with crazy traffic in between each. It was well past 1700, and the last time I'd had something more substantial than ice water was 0900. I do -not- function well without fuel. So, to keep me entertained while waiting for my sandwich to run through the toaster and take my mind off the rumbling in my empty tummy, the employee behind the counter offered witty banter, a little bit of flirting, and a whole lot of sass. Enough to keep me on my toes and keep a chuckle at the ready. And when I'm tired, sweaty, hungry, and deep in thought about twenty billion other things going on... that's a mighty task. Plus, upstairs seating overlooks Indiana, there are a couple of wall outlets to plug into, and plenty of sunshine through the southward-facing windows. Oh. If you walk into this location during the noon lunch hour (try 1:30 if you fear lines - it is far much shorter), you may be alarmed that the line is snaking around and still out the door. Never fear, they are professionals. They have their conveyer belt system down to a science, and the only thing that ever holds anything up is Chatty Cathy up front that is too big offering office gossip to pay attention. But even working around her, things are good. The food is consistent, the service is friendly, and they have a nice little upstairs full of seating. Just stop sitting by the window. I will Never revisit any Potbelly locations because their food left a sour taste in my mouth that will remain on all locations. I am not a fan of Subway or any other chain sandwich shops but I would rather go to any of those locations then Potbelly due to their miniature size of their sandwiches and the lack of fresh ingredients in their sandwiches. Your money is best spent on the food trucks on the mall. During my visit on a busy Saturday afternoon on 26 March 2016 the costumer services from the prep team to the cashier was terrible and can be improved with actual friendly service and by keeping the resturant presentable and clean. With the high traffic of tourist I can see why their lack of professionalism and pride of their product and resturant is still afloat and can understand the negative reviews. I'm a fan of Potbelly. I believe that it's probably the best value of the major downtown lunch chains. I like the customer service at this Potbelly. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich, which was a new item. I guess it did not "take" when the person in line processed my order. Therefore, when it was time to make my sandwich I had to wait. To make up for the wait, the friendly staff offered me a free cookie.
