Double bacon cheeseburger with lots of fixins
    Lailah J.

Washington, DC (Capitol Hill) - I was staying at the hotel across the street so this was a super convenient option for food and we popped by a couple of times. I was skeptical at first maybe because the restaurant has tinted windows so looked kinda closed, but boy was I wrong...and whaddya know, they're actually open from 10am-midnight most days! (Only Wed they close at 10pm.) We ordered a burger, chicken sandwiches, cheesesteak, and fries, and everything was fantastic and came out hot and fresh. The chicken sandwich is massive and superb value at $7.79! I had a spicy chicken sandwich "loaded" with the recommended toppings - the chicken is tender, flavorful, with a crispy flaky crust. The bacon cheese burger was excellent as well. I only tried a bite of the Philly cheesesteak but it was pretty decent. You can tell the fries are made from fresh-cut potatoes not frozen. There are a great variety of complimentary topping choices including sautéed mushroom & fried onions. They also offer kosher hot dogs, a few vegetarian options, and 75 flavors of shakes & malts, which I'm bummed not to have tried but it was too much on top of our already gluttonous meals. The inside was clean, with 2 ordering counter when it gets busy. The guys behind the counter were all hardworking, and one even brought our food to us on the first day when it was slow, which he didn't have to do. Z Burger is kind of like Five Guys on steroids - with more variety and enhancements. It's as good as fast food gets!

    Double bacon cheeseburger

Visiting DC for 10 days, we stopped in to Z Burger because it was only about a block from our hotel. The burgers here are absolutely fantastic. In a world where $20-$25 is the new normal for a restaurant burger, Z burger is a throwback to the old days when hamburgers were still affordable. Being old school, these burgers are not fancy , despite coming with a long list of condiments like mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Adding to the value, there is also a long list of extra add-ons that you can get for free, similar to Five Guys Burgers but not nearly as expensive. We ate here four times in 10 days and kept going back because it was so good. I had the double bacon cheeseburger, their most expensive burger on the menu and it was only around $13. The first time in we added an order of fries with an order of onion rings, and despite my reputation as a big eater, this was way too much food. The onion rings come in a hamburger bag that is stuffed full, I would consider them a meal by themselves. Every time after the initial trip, I only ordered the double bacon cheeseburger without the fries or onion rings, and to be honest that was plenty, despite me being a big guy with a big appetite. We also tried the milkshakes a couple of times. They were super thick and flavorful, and for less than seven dollars they were a steal. Great honest food, fantastic value, highly recommended.

Was visiting DC and staying across the street so stopped in to Z burger for a quick dinner. I agree with previous reviews that it's on par with Five Guys. Food is made to order. I had a cheeseburger which I thought was good and quite filling. Ordered the onion rings which were gigantic and had a large amount of fry batter. I ended up only eating from the bag. Next time I would get 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings.

This basic burger with small fries was amazing! Such an excellent value and so delicious.

I was in Washington DC on business & asked a local where to find great cheesesteak sandwichs. He said Z Burger had great cheesesteak, but their burgers & shakes were great as well. The closest Z Burger,500 New Jersey Ave NW, was a little far from where I was but I was set on finding & enjoying an east coast cheesesteak. I was told there might be a line so be patient. When I entered the a/c felt so refreshing. I changed my plan & decided to eat there. The wait was minimal which allowed me time to choose from the 4 cheesesteaks on the menu. I ordered The Original & got to choose from a large list of free sandwich toppings. Watched the chef cook it...Oh my! Not the baby Subway portions. Did not think I could eat it the whole thing but after my first bite I couldn't stop eating. As I ate, I glanced at the 40+ flavors of hand scooped shakes they make. Wow! Maybe tomorrow. Yes, it was so great that I caught a ride across town the next day as well & ordered the same. This time I had fries. My second day I couldn't eat the whole sandwich by it was cool enough to eat out on the patio w/ locals who work at a nearby hotel-they were funny. Another great experience. Took the other half back to the hotel fridge & ended up eating Z-Burger cheesesteak 3 days in a row & wish i could have made it 4 days, but I had to catch a plane. No way I will find this yumminess in CA. I don't know about the other Z-Burger locations but this one was a hit. The manager/owner person & the master chef were kind & helpful. Forget looking elsewhere. If you're close, bring the fam. Split the sandwiches & shakes so you can eat here 3-4 days a week. I would. Free a/c & great atmosphere. Can't wait to returnBy far one of my favorite memories in DC.

Honestly we were so pleasantly surprised by how good the burgers are! I had the Capital Burger which had such incredible flavor and the burger itself is thick and juicy. Despite having just had a big dinner somewhere else, as I write this, my mouth is watering. My daughter had the wild mushrooms burger and she loved it -- the aioli had the perfect tang to go with the mushroom and Swiss, both burgers were cooked perfectly medium as requested. The old fashioned was just your typical old fashioned with a slice of candied bacon attached to the outside of the glass. We were hoping for something smokier and a little different but it was still a very good Old Fashioned. We shared the chocolate mousse and it was perfection. Yum! If I lived here this would be my new regular spot.

I've been on a shakshuka kick lately, so I opted for the the Sweet Potato Shakshuka, which is described as: Sweet Potato Curry, with Chickpeas and Sunny Eggs with a the chicken add-on - gotta get that protein in, after all. This was one of the most unique shakshukas I'd ever had... It literally tasted like a curry dish you might get at your local Indian restaurant, with a bit of a brunch flair to it. The curry itself had a wee bit of spice and was a bit sweet - but that could have been from the sweet potatoes. The chicken was served in a bowl on the side, which felt a bit... odd... I would've expected it to be incorporated into the main dish. It was kind of bland and a bit lukewarm, so I don't know that I'd order that again... but I would definitely order this again!

From start to finish, I have absolutely no negative feedback at all. 1. The Food Everything we ordered was completely divine! Here's the rundown: -Sandwiches: My husband got a Bogan Bun. My son a Mumbo Bun chicken sandwich and listen, he didn't speak a single word the entire meal because he was enjoying it so much! I ordered the Lucky Bun made with an Impossible patty. It was everything! Best I've had at a restaurant! In fact, my son, who loves beef burgers and claims he doesn't like plant based meat, ended up eating the rest of my burger! He tore that plant based meat DOWN! -Thick cut chips & Queso: The waiter let us know that their portion of fries (chips) could easily feed 3 to 4 people. He was not lying at all. The three of us shared one basket. I don't know if the sandwiches or the fries stole the show. These fries were seasoned to absolute perfection!!! SERIOUSLY! Not the typical sprinkle on top, but seasoned on every single side like someone picked up each fry and hand sprinkled each fry. Think I'm fibbing look at my pic. We ordered a side of queso for dipping and it was so good I wish I had some right now. If you're reading, hear me out Lucky Bun....add tortilla chips and queso to the menu please!!!! I would buy it just to scoop up that delicious cheese. -The Garlic Aioli: why am I highlighting a condiment???? Because!! lol!! It wasn't just standard mayo mixed with garlic powder. You could tell someone actually finely minced fresh garlic and herbs into it. It was so good I couldn't decide whether to dip my fries in the aioli or the queso! So that's why it's in my review! 2. Service The service was exceptional. There was no wait time at all. We walked straight in and were seated immediately. The food came out extremely fast which surprised us since we all ordered completely different proteins. They were speedy but all of our food arrived perfectly warm. The host, a slim gentleman, and our waitress, a lovely young lady rockin locs, were both incredibly kind, attentive, and welcoming. I'm telling you good service makes the food even better! 3. Restaurant Look and Seating The inside of the restaurant is fairly small, but they maximized the space with multiple tables and a full service bar. They also have outdoor dining and a front waiting area with outdoor furniture, which would be perfect for a nice summer day. You don't even have to ask me because you already know the answer. YES!!! The next time I am in DC, I will specifically make time to go there. Even if I'm not staying in the immediate area, I would gladly take an Uber just to eat here again and so will my family! Make sure you get there too!

Ok, maybe that's their "runny". Slide it off the toast and press on - snail trail of mucus be damned. The avocado spread was great - bright, citrusy, and well seasoned.
