Almond torte cake is way too overhyped. I ordered one after seeing an article on Huffington Post so with a description like that who wouldn't want to try it!? It's a diabetics worst nightmare, sugar overload. The filling in the middle had a bland taste, nothing special about it. Maybe it's because I ordered the cake and had it shipped to MD that it tasted bad. People raving about this cake should try middle eastern or Greek bakeries! Ordered a cake a week ahead for pickup day of 2/17/18. While cutting the cake for my guests, the cake seemed hard. Sure enough, my guests and I were not able to eat the cake at all since it was dry, hard and crumbly. How can a cake be hard on the first day?? I emailed a complaint to Prantl's, and I never received a response. I have been ordering from Prantl's the past 3 years, and there were occasions when the cakes weren't fresh, but not to this degree. This place is fabulous. All the offerings are highest quality. And cooked to perfection. About the only thing I am keen on is the grape leaves. The white beans are wonderful. The lebneh is first rate--a personal favorite. This is a must go to spot in Squirrel Hill. read more

So, I work at Prantl's Bakery and to see some of these rude reviews about customer service on here really makes me sad. I believe myself and all my fellow co-workers try our hardest to make our customers experience the best they've ever had, it's just hard sometimes with a lot of people in the store screaming orders in your face..whilst not even saying hi when i say hi to them first. Sometimes, it's not even us being rude it's the customers that come in and bash us for a cake that doesn't look that good, it's not our job it's our job to make sure you get everything you need whilst getting great customer service. I think all of you really need to re-consider what good customer service is because I've seen way worse elsewhere. read more

Very american dessert. Everything is extremely sweet. I got the famed "burnt almond torte" and was not impressed. In fact, I could not finish it because of how sweet it is and dry the cake portion was. I can see how it is beloved by pittsburgers. If you like traditional American dessert, this place is great. If you like more european/asian style, probably not. read more

Yes it may taste delicious, but it is owned and operated by the most cold hearted people you will ever meet. I ordered both my bridal shower cake and my wedding cake from them. After sitting down with their designer who assured me my concepts could be created, I signed a contract. Fast forward to the day of my shower and my mother goes and picks up my cake which was incomplete. They forgot several elements of the agreed upon design. And it took several phone calls to get a hold of anyone who could explain what happened. But they refused to answer why it wasn't completed. Just kept being rude and never apologized. When we wanted to meet with them again to assure that the concept for the Wedding cake would be fully executed, we were given the run around until finally the manager called to DUMP US as a client. Saying our expectations for the cake to be flat and even, were unreasonable. We were also informed that our design was impossible for them to do. THEN WHY TELL US YOU COULD DO IT AND TAKE OUR MONEY?!?! For the record, Prantl's is no longer under the original ownership or standards that once made it the best bakery in Pittsburgh. read more

I know I would get booed for this review because everyone in Pittsburgh loves Prantls and maybe they have just never had a good baked good. I am impressed by the bread but everything else is questionable. I smells great, looks even better and tastes like additives if you can imagine that taste. The best thing in the whole place is the Almond Torte and that usually has dry icing and an edible center. So if you can make it past the icing its ok. Prantl's Bakery is the absolute best bakery in the world. Upon entrance the smell of fresh baked goods smothers your nostrils. I have grown up on Prantl's cakes. I love the birthday cakes with the pudding baked inside, and the toasted almond cups, which are enough to satisfy your taste buds. I like sweets but, I am in love with Prantl's. I have introduced so many people to this bakery. I will continue to keep Prantl's as my #1 bakery, and every year my birthday cake will come from none other than PRANTL'S!!! If you are ever in the Burgh, you must try it and they are even open on Sundays until late afternoon. It is a wonderful experience!!! read more

Prantl's has a few things going for it--great hours (they're even open on Mondays), great treats, and great staff. Seriously, their staff are always so pleasant. I drove across town today to go there instead of a closer bakery because I would rather be greeted by their super nice staff in the morning. It can't be beat. You can also order on the web. Prantl's is my favorite bakery. I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and I've always gotten my birthday cake here (well over 2 decades worth of cakes!). Prantl's always has a place in my heart. This year I have been going to some of the known bakeries in the city testing things out. I tried Prantl's, Paddy Cake, Grandview, Oakmont, and then Jean Marc's. Prantl's hands down had the best burnt almond torte. However, I felt for basic things like cookies/pastries this was not the place to go. The cookies look beautiful but don't have a ton of taste. But, all variations of the almond torte they have are amazing and worth it. Their customer service was great even though the place is always packed. read more

An old fashioned bakery with the best almond torte. When my son was little, he and I would make a trip along Shadyside's Walnut Street. We would start with the variety store on the corner, which has so many little toys that I remember as a kid. Then we would go to the card store, which has a great selection of fun gifts. I got cupcakes from Prantl's for my wedding (five different flavors, two of which we invented together) and they were absolutely perfect. They came cold and over the time of the ceremony were the perfect temperature to serve. Everyone was saying that these were the best desserts they had in a long time. The fabulous different flavors and the low cost for the cupcakes make this a must use for a wedding! I highly recommend them for any event, but especially if you want to impress your out of town wedding guests! read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE. I went to this location early at 7:50am. When I got there, there were only two people ahead of me in line and 3 employees behind the counter. I waited patiently, even after one customer had paid and left, so there were three people behind the counter, one person being helped and me standing alone waiting. The woman who was helping the customer who had just left (and was now free) took off her gloves, put on new gloves, and started wiping down some items on the counter. Still nobody had greeted me, smiled, looked in my direction, or even acknowledged my existence in the small shop. After a minute of watching her ignore me, I quietly asked the woman if there was someone who could help me, and she said "let me see if I could find someone," even though she was just helping another customer! But she refused to help me. But I really wanted the almond torte, so I again patiently waited. Another woman came out (so that there were now 4 people behind the counter and only 2 customers, including myself), and she curtly asked what I wanted. I gave her my order, and when I was done, instead of getting out what I had asked for, she turned around and started talking to another employee, even though I had already been ignored nearly 5 minutes for no reason. Annoyed with first having been totally ignored, then being treated so rudely, I decided not to give Prantl's my business and told them to forget it and I left. I never officially complain about bad service, but felt so insulted by the blatant rudeness that later in the day I called and spoke to the store owner. She somehow knew what had happened without my even telling her and was very apologetic but said the women were trainees who should have called for her help (implying they were busy, even though they weren't). I told her that even if you're a trainee, you show common respect to customers. I told her that all the women behind the counter were young Caucasian, the two customers in front of me were elderly white people, and I was a brown Muslim woman who wears a headscarf. She immediately dismissed the possibility of any kind of prejudice and said that if I knew the "composition" of the employees I would know that that was not the case, and that she "feels very strongly" that my race had nothing to do with it. [I've been around long enough to know the difference between someone who just has bad manners and someone who is pointedly disrespecting me.] To her credit, the store owner did apologize for the bad service, though she made no concession or effort to win back my business, even after I told her that I would never come back to Prantl's because I don't need to be treated that way. So I gave my business to Whole Foods instead and, without mentioning a word about what had just happened at Prantl's, got such incredible service, to the point the employee at the bakery came around to me from behind the counter to answer my questions and to hand me my cake when she was finished boxing it up. The cake was delicious, too. I don't understand how people can be so rude when you're PAYING them (good money, too) for the service. Never, ever, ever going back to Prantl's; I don't care how good their almond torte is. And I would suggest others not support businesses who treat customers this way, either. read more

I have no heart to tell her that the cake was way, way, way too sweet and that I couldn't eat more than two bites before feeling overwhelmed. We went to Prantl's off of someone's word and we are VERY UPSET!!! We purchased a 200.00 Tier cake for a birthday. We tasted the cake they supplied a week before and we were happy at the sample... My thoughts are they bring in THE SAMPLE from somewhere else because it was NOT THE SAME taste as the cake they gave us. Although it looked nice it was DRY as LAS VEGAS. I DO NOT RECOMMEND PRANTL'S, maybe for a DONUT or something but not for ANYTHING IMPORTANT. read more

For the second time in three years, Prantl's Shadyside inconvenienced customers who pre-order for Easter. Before Easter Prantl's called me to ask if I wanted to place a pre-paid order which is supposed to eliminate the need for a lengthy wait during the busy holiday period. When I arrived as scheduled at 7:30 and attempted to present the order confirmation that they had sent, I was told that I still had to take a ticket and wait even though the order was paid for and was sitting in a couple of bags that could have easily been handed to me. However, I had to wait 25 minutes before one of the staff was willing to receive my order. I was one of at least a half dozen customer who was required to wait for what had already been paid for and could easily have been handed to us. No apology of any sort was offered even after a number of us began to complain. BTW, their signature burnt almond cake was not as good as in years past. UPDATE: Two hours after posting this Prantl''s contacted me offering an explanation, an apology and a full credit. I consider the matter resolved and I appreciate their responsiveness and concern. Everyone screws up at times. Only the good guys care enough to make it right. I'm impressed. read more

Honestly I just don't get the how everyone is so in love with this place? I'm not a native so when I moved to the area many years ago everyone advised my family that we absolutely had to try a burnt almond torte from Prantl's. We did, and to be fair that is a great dessert. However, I have worked across the street from them for a decade now, and the office ladies I work with have brought in nearly everything they sell at Prantl's over the last decade. The cookies, the cupcakes, the junior pastries, danishes, donuts, etc... have all made there way into our office, and I have never been wowed by any of them. In fact I find most items to be pretty sub par. I think if Prantl's wasn't a true bakery and merely a shop that produced one signature cake it would probably deserve five stars, but that's not the case, and since I have to judge on the totality of their products as a bakery, not only the burnt almond torte which is their claim to fame and recognition, I find them to be quite lackluster overall. If you want a true bakery treat I would suggest La Gourmandine for anything, Vanilla for cupcakes, Jean Marc Chatellier, even the somewhat overrated Oakmont Bakery, as other than the burnt almond torte, you are paying specialty bakery prices but getting Giant Eagle quality, which is fine, but at that point you might as well go to Giant Eagle and pay accordingly. read more

My coworker and I stopped at Prantl's for a sweet treat over lunch. He bought a gob and I bought a thumbprint cookie. There were no prices on the cookies and when the cashier rang me up it cost $1.25! That's crazy expensive for a small thumbprint cookie but I bought it anyway thinking it would be worth it. When we both got back to the office and tried our sweets, it was very evident that Prantl's does NOT use real butter in their baking. The flavor of the cookie tastes like artificial butter - almost exactly like Pam cooking spray. My guess is that they use a butter flavored crisco or some other money saving ingredient. Overall, expensive prices, ok presentation and TERRIBLE taste! There are many other great bakeries in Pittsburgh don't waste your money on overpriced pastries with low quality ingredients. I bought 2 thumbprints for the same price at The Priory and they were DELICIOUS! You're better off going there. read more

I ordered here for years - great birthday cakes, burnt almond tortes, etc. Recently, I ordered two very decorated birthday cakes for my kids. The process was cumbersome. I had to drop off photos or email them. In both cases, I had a problem - one time - they weren't sure they received it - in the other case - they lost the photo. The cakes were delicious, but one was well over $100 for what used to cost about $40. They also looked really nice. I tried to order again recently - well over 48 hours in advance - for another one of my kids (I have four - all with birthdays right in a row). It was over the holidays and no one called me back. When I called back from out of town, I got cut off and could not call back in (rang and rang). When I called again - 48 hours ahead of time - I was told the decorators would not be able to do my cake and they could give me just a cake with balloons on it (I had not even told them what I wanted on the cake - yet they had to know who I was because they already knew I wanted a triceratops - so they must have heard my voice mail from days before and just not done anything about it). Their solution was to let me wait for a few hours - 3 or 4 - and they would call me back and let me know if they could do it. Unacceptable. I know someone else who went to pick up a party cake, and it was not done AT ALL - they had forgotten or not done the order or something. Baked goods taste great - look pretty - but the customer service has become very dicey. read more
