I came here after hearing about their burnt almond torte and had to try it! I think it was my first time trying this and I really enjoyed the cake! I really liked how the almonds and the custard filling came together.

Finally got around to trying this very famous cake that some call the best in the USA. The burnt almond torte. Tried for a special occasion, the torte and the carrot cake pastry. The burnt almond torte was very good. The best I've ever had? Maybe, but not for sure. The cream is so tasty, the cake itself is soft and surprisingly flavorful with some vanilla, and the almonds are just so so good. So crunchy and sugary. It is really good and well worth the price. I love that they have smaller bars now, which are actually still quite large. However, can't say the same about the carrot cake. It was so tiny and not that flavorful at all. I am surprised they came from the same bakery.

I came to this location after finding out the Forbes Ave location is closed permanently. I was warmly greeted and then overwhelmed by all of the selections of pastries. The staff patiently waited for me to peruse all of the cases. I ended up getting about 8 items and only paid about $23! The Jr Pecan rolls were a perfect bite. The almond croissant was delicious as well. I was hoping for some almond paste in the middle but it was still pretty delicious. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

We recently celebrated our parents' 50th anniversary and wanted to recreate their original wedding cake. After reaching out to several bakeries, only Prantl's was able to bring this vision to life--and they did an absolutely incredible job. We worked with Shanon, who was wonderful from start to finish. We sent her a 50-year-old photo of the cake, and she and the team perfectly captured every detail. The result was stunning and tasted just as amazing. The delivery was right on time, and the delivery person went above and beyond--carefully arranging the cake and even bringing along an extra to-go box for leftovers. Thank you, Shanon and Prantl's, for helping make this milestone celebration so memorable for our mom and dad.

I was reading that the toasted almost torte is an absolute must when visiting Pittsburgh. Yea. Skip the sandwich with French fries on it. Just get this. Get ten of these Jrs. Stop reading this. Book a flight. Rent a car. Get down here. Do it now. It's that good. That's all I'm going to say about it. #eatpittsburgh #almondtorte

Our custom 2 layer burnt almond torte wedding cake, delivered and set up by Prantl's at our venue

We used Prantl's for our wedding cake because the burnt almond torte is my favorite thing on the planet. They worked closely with me on exactly how I wanted it to look and the size, and the details of getting my decorations to them ahead of time. They delivered it to my venue about 40 minutes away and everything went flawlessly. They even advised us that it was a better decision to not get the extra layer to freeze for our anniversary because it doesn't freeze well, and to save the money and get a fresh little cake when the time comes (which is this weekend!)

When visiting Pittsburgh I always say there are the 3 P's of food destinations and Prantl's in Shadyside is one of them. (Right next door is Pamela's). When visiting my alma mater (Carnegie Mellon) recently, I had to go to Shadyside, site of my old haunting grounds, for breakfast. Much had changed over the years but Prantl's is still a fixture. I was going to a friend's home for dinner and wanted to make sure I brought some of their Famous Burnt Almond Torte. It was a small affair so I bought one piece of the Pastry, one of the raspberry and one of the Custard. Pittsburghers are always happy when someone brings Prantl's over. By the way, I picked up some cookies as well that I flew back with me to California and ate 3 days later and they were amazing. You can order the tortes two days in advance to make sure they don't run out but the lady assured me over the phone that they wouldn't. We had a 40 minute wait for breakfast next door and I made my order in advance and they told me they could hold it for pickup later in the day as it was 80 degrees and humid out. We came back 3 hours later and took the cakes back to our hotel room and into the fridge. Everyone was so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. My host was so excited to get the Burnt Almond Torte for dessert. It was the perfect way to end the evening.

Prantl's bakery was just okay. I feel like this bakery gets a lot of hype, so I was excited to try it. I got a broccoli and cheese quiche, which tasted like it had been thawed from the freezer (I swear I bit into a piece of ice). The apricot hamantaschen was lovely though; I had never tried it before but the cookie was perfectly soft and I liked the apricot jam filling. There isn't seating inside and the service was fine.

    Ham and cheese croissant

Went in asking for a ham and cheese croissant warmed up, and the person at the register said "I guess we could do that" like warming up a croissant is an unusual thing to ask for. Got my warmed-up croissant and started eating it, realized there was one half-slice of ham folded up and what I believe to be no cheese. I am sad to say that this place had poor service and even poorer food. (should've just gone to Starbucks down the street) as someone that loves supporting small businesses!! I also encourage the small businesses to have better customer training and food than the chains.

My son-in-law's birthday was approaching during our visit in Pittsburgh recently and I wanted to find him a special birthday cake. Not being a native to the area I started my search on Yelp and was determined to seek out a promising bakery in the area.  I eventually settled on Prantl's Bakery, located at 5525 Walnut St, in Pittsburgh's Shadyside area, that's a renowned bakery that's been serving the community since 1970. With a rich history and an inviting atmosphere, that offers a wide range of baked goods, from cakes and pastries to cookies and bread. When I read that the bakery's founder, Henry Prantl, developed their famous Burnt Almond Torte, which has been praised as the "Best Cake in America" from several sources, I knew I had to check it out. This renowned dessert, along with other popular items such as the Chocolate Chip Cookie, Almond Cookies, Raspberry Thumbprints, Apple Strudel, Cinnamon Rolls, Elephant Ears, Peanut Butter Pie, Cheese Danish, Apricot Kolache, and much more, hooked me!  In addition to its sweet treats, they also offer  custom cakes, catering services, and a cafe where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. The bakery has a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff that make it the perfect place to relax and indulge, and I did. First, let me say emphatically that their Burnt Almond Torte is indeed one of the best sweet treats I've ever had so the reviews nailed it!!!  So, I ordered the birthday cake at 9am on Saturday and picked it up at noon, easy peasey. While there I loaded up on assortment of sweet treats to share and of course the almond promise :-) The cake was their half and half which was a half white cream and chocolate cake that was gorgeous. Even better the cake was a BIG hit with everyone and I was very pleased with the not-too-sweet delight. Every one of the cookies, tarts, pies, and patties were delightful and all the locals were very impressed.  Bottom line: There's actually parking nearby, which is a big deal around the Burgh, and this beloved Pittsburgh institution with their variety of delicious baked goods and a warm, welcoming atmosphere is sure to satisfy your cravings. Highly recommend!!!!! Hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Their website, https://www.prantlsbakery.com/, provides more information about their menu, online ordering, and catering services. Customers can also follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PrantlsBakery/ for updates and promotions.

Stopped after lunch because I wanted a sweet treat. Figured pals is one of the best shots to go to right? I thought so. Though I do have to rave about the chocolate buttercream icing on the thumbprint was fantastic! But the Beetlejuice cupcakes decoration, cute, and festive for the time of year. And the movie as well. But, the cupcake was dense not a problem. But it was bone dry extremely disappointed when you're paying $3.50 a cupcake.

"A picture is worth a thousand words".....soft, pillowy cinnamon buns topped with a sticky, crunchy, caramelized pecan topping. They're simply divine. I seek out good sticky buns, and I guarantee you won't find better ones than those baked at Prantl's. They're wonderfully delicious!

This shop is part of a larger chain but currently appears to be the only location in the Pittsburgh area. It's located in East Liberty and is really more of a bakery than a coffee shop. The inside is split about 50/50, with half dedicated to seating and the other half serving as a self-serve bakery. You grab a tray and tongs before walking around selecting whichever baked goods catch your eye. They also have display cases filled with cakes and other pastries that need to be kept refrigerated. For my coffee on this morning I went with a 16 oz hot honey lavender macchiato while my wife chose a 16 oz iced tiramisu latte. I have to admit that the name of my drink confused me a bit at first, but it ended up being a latte macchiato as expected. With that being said, I thought it was quite good. The lavender was light enough to be noticeable without overpowering the drink, while the honey added just the right amount of sweetness. The espresso was also present, especially on the finish, where it added both flavor and body. My wife also enjoyed her latte and appreciated the tiramisu flavors throughout. Outside of the coffee, we ordered a number of pastries. My wife chose the Crookie, which is a cookie baked on top of a croissant. My son picked out a chocolate-covered Belgian waffle, while my daughter chose the strawberry soft bread. All of them enjoyed what they ordered, and I think my wife especially loved the Crookie. As for me, I went a little overboard and chose a garlic and cheese croissant, a curry croquette, pork-dusted bread, and a sweet taro cream bread. All of them were delicious in their own way. The garlic and cheese croissant was a nice savory option, with plenty of garlic flavor and a crispy cheese crust. The curry croquette had wonderful warming spices that made it especially flavorful. The pork-dusted bread was definitely the most unusual item. The pork topping reminded me of Wild Bill's Beef Jerky, and somehow those savory flavors worked really well on top of the crunchy laminated bread. Last but certainly not least was the taro cream bread. I was impressed by how light it felt despite being packed with an impressive amount of cream filling. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I'm a sucker for bakeries like this and clearly ordered far more than my waistline needed, but everything I tried was enjoyable. While the coffee was good, the pastries are the real reason to visit, with the coffee serving as an excellent complement.
