Pratt + Larson is a handmade ceramic tile maker located in Portland since 1982. I am working with a really funky old bathroom that has a number of cracked tiles. I had a guess that the tiles originally came from this biz, and while I don't think that proved to be true, I really enjoyed my visit to Pratt + Larson to explore options. They have a wonderful display showroom where the tiles are laid out in various formations, even with an example shower and fireplace. There are so many wonderful options. They also have an outlet store with assorted amounts of tile that is great for a project like mine where I won't be fully redoing a room, just a patch repair. read more

We had Pratt and Larson tiles put in by Old World Stone. The tile is beautiful but it is Old World Stone who did a meticulous job that made the bathroom spectacular. They gave us an estimate and communicated changes if needed, gave a timeline that they stuck to. I highly recommend them. read more

Gorgeous glazes but beware of buying tile- you will have to check every single tile in the box and you will have to filter out a large percentage of them. Make sure that you are going to get your money back for those. Their samples are perfect but when you receive your tiles, you will have tiles that look like wedges and tiles that are curved. Something is happening in the pressing stage during their manufacturing and they are not level. This is the "magic" of tile that can create puddles and sharp raised corners. read more

Pratt & Larson is the tile vampire that has sucked years from my life. And I mean that in a good way. It is just that there are so many options that I find myself wandering through the store and the connected outlet, lost in a haze, with a zillion design ideas running through my head. Then I come home and ponder, "What about that? No, maybe that? Or, wait a second, this WITH that..." It is endless. If I lived in a house with 'character' then their custom tiles would be ideal. You can go crazy with all of their themed tiles from woodland creatures, to under the sea motifs and Moroccan-patterned and multi-hued designs. For each design you can choose the color and blend multiple colors for your custom pattern. At one point, Mr. K may have seen me glassy eyed looking at their catalog and realized he was dealing with some form of obsession. Ultimately for my current project, I went with a more modern and clean design, so I chose tiles from another source. But, for any tile project, Pratt & Larson will continue to be one of my first stops and definitely a source of inspiration. If you need to inform longtime customers about your new safety protocols: there's a nice way to do that, and there's the way they do it at P&L. I showed up wearing a mask correctly, with hands still damp from rubbing alcohol. Was made to feel like a filthy intruder because I didn't know ahead of time that I needed an appointment to see the outlet. (An appointment for the showroom makes sense because you would be interacting with an employee for a long period of time in a confined space; but the outlet cashier just weights up your tile after you ring a bell for them.) Apparently, I should have looked it up on the Internet ahead of time (because everyone should assume that an extremely well-ventilated outlet area would be on appointment-only? Or feel stupid they didn't know this?) Also, I use my own hand sanitizer because I'm allergic to aloe (like, epipen allergic). It would have been nice if I could have gotten a word in edgewise to say that. But the two ladies who worked the front showroom were yelling at me and over each other, so it was hard to understand their directions, or to be able explain that I reek of rubbing alcohol for a reason. Maybe I wouldn't be used to hurrying past the front showroom workers if they hadn't (for years!) acted put out by low-rent artists. (Maybe a side entrance would solve the need to make people feel like second-class citizens without all the yelling at me like I'm stupid.) Pretty tiles aren't worth feeling like this. Update to my 4/18/23 review. I believe now that Pratt + Larson (P+L) was not solely responsible for discrepancy with the tiles I purchased from them, however there are too many pitfalls for a newbie like me dealing with a company like this. Advice: 1) Expect delays. I was given a 3-month arrival time, which turned into 4+ months. 2) Request a sample to have on hand for delivery. 3) On delivery, OPEN & CHECK EVERY BOX, possibly every tile. Call P+L or your local dealer immediately to report. If I'd had this advice, I could've avoided a very expensive disappointment. read more

I personally love the glossy tile as it has such a rich look to it. The colors choices are numerous and really stretch the imagination in a great way. You can do just about anything! The folks at the store are extremely helpful and worked with us after we found a bounty of green Field tile in the outlet. We went on to create a unique look for our guest bath blending both outlet tile and custom-made tile - - it turned out beautiful! You just can't go wrong!!! read more

I love the abundance of choices here! A shop bursting with creative displays and hand made tile that's a veritable explosion of the unique, colorful, and artistic. The vibe is not the least bit uppity although the offerings are upscale and often one of a kind. Staff was down to earth, super helpful, and gave a store wide tour of tile in our budget. What a disappointing and frustrating experience! On two occasions within the same week, we made it in person to the showroom -- first with an appointment, and then to return samples. We were so excited to get to see for ourselves the beautiful selection of tile and mosaic. That in itself was fun, but on both occasions, we left shocked and in disbelief. Our whole experience in the showroom felt like pulling teeth. We had to plea for help, we had to fight the staff's assumptions and specifically ask to see the more expensive options, we had to brainstorm for ourselves while the staff person was standing there waiting for our next ideas. Still, we left our first visit with samples we felt would reinvigorate our bathroom, only to find out from our research that night that one tile would make the floor too slippery (our guests would surely at some point fall and hurt themselves) and the accent tile we picked for our shower wall (with the salesperson's encouragement) was rated specifically for dry (not damp) environments. We returned the samples, and decided to give the showroom another try, only to be 'helped' by another staff person who couldn't have been more disinterested and dismissive. We realize these are only two of a team of people, some of whom are bound to be more focused on helping their customers realize their remodeling dreams. But phew! What a punch in the gut this was. read more

I brought a couple of sample tiles in to match the color and design. What occurred is that the staff basically accused me of trying to steal them in so many words. In addition, they were rude and arrogant and refused to apologize. Do NOT go here unless you want to be abused. read more

I ordered some Architectural Trim samples through my local dealer. The shapes are great; sadly the glaze color is way off. I wanted a dark red, like R18. What I got was a pink. Just to make sure, I took a photo and looked at it and the on-line color sample in a photo editing program. The Hue and Brightness were nearly the same; but the Saturation was 55% lighter (44 instead of 69). I understand handmade will have some variation, but this much makes their product unreliable. If you think you can work around this color problem, be sure to check the tile price before you get too invested. My local dealer's price is silly. read more

Edit: updating to 3 stars because the showroom manager messaged with an apology and it seems like it was just kind of a bad time/day The tiles are beautiful, and some of the employees there are truly friendly and helpful. I was so excited to visit the store in person and choose spectacular tiles for my house remodel. However, one employee was so unbelievably rude that I just got turned off from this whole experience, and will go to Heath ceramics instead. This is what happened : I was looking at some tiles on display, and asked what glaze was used. Two employees were helpful in trying to figure out the glaze, and they explained to me the variation and also gave me several tile samples to take home. They then asked another employee (long dark brown hair) to come over and help me with any further questions I had. She was so curt and brusque, clearly just wanting to end the convo asap. When I went to pick up the samples, she quickly snatched them away, saying I could only take one, and then walked away. My mother in law and I were so taken aback at her attitude that we left the store immediately. I love the tiles, but this attitude left such a bad taste in my mouth :( read more

Tremendous customer service experience here, start to finish. They make and sell amazing tile, most of which I cannot afford. However, it is absolutely worth checking this place out because their decorative tiles and decorative murals become affordable elements when blended with other, more affordable tile that you may purchase elsewhere. I plan to strategically mix in some of their tile with my overall bathroom tiling job. Case in point - I have been looking for a metallic decorative liner tile that I could run over 45 linear feet for our bathroom remodel. I found exactly what I wanted at Pratt & Larson for $1.64/each (as opposed to upwards of $20/each elsewhere). Sold! It's also worth checking out the "back room" here. If you have a small project or are looking for decorative elements, you can find items in the back room at a fraction of the cost. I found numerous decorative tiles here for $2/each rather than their typical $10/each price tag. In addition to tiles, I discovered that they also carry a small selection of sinks. I found two copper sinks here for way less than anything I was finding online. Every dollar saved elsewhere in my budget means I can add to the decorative tile budget. Such pretty things all over the walls here. It's like tile dream land. I could come up with ideas for days in their showroom space. We used some of their in stock glass tile for a project three years ago and it came out beautifully. This weekend I decided to re-tile a little table we have and I needed some extra tile (we had a little left over from the kitchen remodel). I figured it was a long shot, being able to find the same tile this long after our initial purchase but it was worth a try. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by a friendly sales associate (wish I'd gotten her name!) who took me right back to the tiles I was looking for. She explained that it was probably from a different lot so it might not match up exactly, but it would be really close. I bought three sq ft (yes they let you buy in little bitty quantities on in stock items like this!) took it home and it worked perfectly! read more

I am always excited & inspired by their display of tile as it might be used. It's even on the ceiling! The variety of colors, textures, shapes, sizes and designs stimulates my creativity. I begin to imagine making my own someday if I ever have time. If I had won the lottery, I can't imagine how I'd ever make a decision on what to buy. But since my buget is so limited, I select from the ones in the back room or when open, the garage. Also inspiring is the use of tile in window covering along side the stairway near the front door entrance. First I went to take in the tile selection, but when I saw that an employee was able to bring her puppy to work, I found myself returning to visit her dog! (The puppy was a giant Newfoundland) Any work place that welcomes their employee's animals gets extra credit from me!! read more

I stopped by to fetch my tile order on a busy Saturday and was informed that pick ups are on weekdays only because of how hectic Saturdays are--oops! However, Arthur was so gracious and accommodating, and was able to gather my small order and even helped bring it out to the car--on a drizzly day! Pratt and Larson is an amazing company and resource. If you are on a limited budget, the discount center, there in the store is fantastic: I have quite literally bought boxes and boxes of tile just thinking i MIGHT want to use them some day. Sometimes there are just a few sq feet of something interesting, and other times, dozens. You just have to dig. The deals are amazing. P/L custom tiles are art works in themselves. I have found the staff to be helpful. If you need help there, ASK. I can't believe the people who say they were ignored, and that maybe P/L staff thought they didn't look like they could afford to be there. That is ridiculous. We are in Oregon. I am an interior designer, but also a very casual older woman. I may not look like I can afford a lot, but I buy a lot, and when I feel I am being ignored, I tell customer service people that I need assistance!! Don't avoid a visit to a world class showroom for that kind of silliness. Pratt and Larson is a gem of Portland, and a true local business. Support them. read more

The showroom is drop-dead gorgeous, as is the quality of their custom tile. Be prepared to pick your jaw off the floor once you hear the price of most of the custom stuff however. The showroom is literally a candy-store for those with the disposable income to beautify their homes with these works of art. All this being said however, I would not recommend shopping here unless you have a designer that you are working with; and an aggressive "take-no-nonsense" type designer at that. Because if you are a do-it-yourselfer or are new to tile at all you will be treated with derision or at the very least ignored. The sales people are rude and will offer very little in the way of design help. I got the feeling that I was wasting their time every time I entered into the place. We ordered tile from their "simple solutions" line; a bit more expensive than the typical Chinese tile you find elsewhere, but we desired the chair-rail and other profiles that they stock to match the subway tile in that line. Be forewarned; even though they literally have this tile in stock at all times, they will not take returns of extra tile after several weeks. Anyone working with tile contractors knows that projects often take longer than expected, so it will be very likely that by the time your project is finished you will have missed the return-by date. Being over $20 per piece for the special profiles we used, we were left with a large box of very expensive extras. In addition, they screwed up our order of pebble floor and gave us the wrong color. Unfortunately, my tile contractor started installing this before I caught the mistake. When I pointed out the error to the salespeople, NO apology or admission of mistake was preferred. Instead I was simply told that "I should have checked the box". You know what ladies; a simple apology would have gone a long way. My recommendation; unless you enjoy being treated poorly or have an intermediary to take the brunt of the sales-persons rudeness for you, avoid this place like the plague. read more

This is specifically about their Outlet/seconds room - and a note on their pricing: Do NOT bother looking for discount tile here. It's not their thing. Even in their outlet/seconds showroom - which I think would be better described as a discard room, you won't find a bargain. The salesperson I spoke with said their tile generally STARTS at $38/sq ft (read that again. That's what he told me). Their "seconds" area starts at $3/sq ft. HOWEVER, unlike other outlets (Thompson, Emser, Tile Direct), they only have tiny tiny batches available. I mean Less than 20 sq. ft available. So what are you going to use that for? Maybe a back splash? And tile sizes were small. Largest, just by eyeball, maybe 4x8? Many were odd shaped designed for mosaic or intricate patterns - though missing some of the interlocking bits in some cases. OVERALL: This is not a place to shop for low priced anything. So take my star rating with a grain of salt if you're loaded or only looking to tile a few square ft. Otherwise, be warned. Not a critique on the quality of their tile, salesmanship, or anything else. Everyone was very friendly and my dog got a treat. And some of their tile was very pretty. LOVE LOVE LOVE the tile of Pratt and Larson. I go many times a year for inspiration and to buy seconds in the back room. I make mosaics from the tiles. Max who runs the seconds area is excellent with everyone who comes in. Welcoming and warm and knowledgeable and enthusiastic, Max is worth the trip alone. Go just to look but I dare you not to buy some of the gorgeous tiles on display. The front area will capture you as well and you may find yourself doing that kitchen or bathroom you have always wanted to do. read more

I have bought tile from P&L three times now and have had nothing but good experiences. They aren't just for rich folks- I was able to find the bulk of my tile at the sales they have periodically- it was only on some fancy accent tiles that I splurged. They have a fantastic selection- the showroom is very inspiring- some so lovely you want to just buy one and put it on a shelf. In regards to the first review I see here- I imagine they do get a lot of people just wandering and getting ideas. Both ladies who I worked with were extremely helpful, not only in picking out tiles but one of them gave me all sorts of tips on the tiling itself when she found out I was attempting it for the first time. The quality and creativity of tile available is fantastic but what first got my attention was the massive variety. Thousands of tile styles and colors available. Then they offered to custom make anything if we could not find what we were looking for. I realized they have their own artist to make them. What they have is not mass produced. We remodeled our bathroom and used tile from Pratt & Larson. It is beautiful. We used a natural stone for the shower and polished river rocks on the floor. People always compliment us on how great it looks. We were not sure what we wanted to do when we arrived at the store, but the show room has so much selection it gave us lots of good ideas. Amazing tile, incredible showroom... we've placed two orders with P&L since we bought our house, and we've been happy with the experience both times. The return policy for overage is very generous (at least with the in-stock white subway tile), and you're just not going to find more beautiful or creative tile anywhere else. What a treasure of a store. The prices on the tile in the main showroom will knock your socks off, but you can get pretty far if you stick to back-room tile for the bulk of your project, and use the front-room tile for finishing touches. Also to note, we had the tile installed by Phil English of English Interiors, and we were 100% happy. Fast, careful, reliable, takes pride in his work. Highly recommended! read more

This place has a great variety of tile but the customer service is not so great! For example I was looking at tile and they did not have a color sample in, in that particular tile. Did the sales woman offer to get a sample in that color. No, she just said, "we don't have that color." So I ordered directly from the manufacturer. When I went back in to look at other tile with the samples in hand the woman noticed and said, "where did you get those samples." I told her from the manufacturer. She stated, "Oh you side stepped us." I said no actually if you recall I was in here last week and you did not offer to get the tile colors for me. She just looked at me and walked away. I think they get a lot of lookers and frankly that is what you initially do when searching for tile. However I am sure after many people look, ask questions and then don't order that gets tiring for the staff. But that is part of the business and after visiting 3 other tile stores in town and having helpful staff who offered advice and samples I know this is not the norm. Their tile is some of the most gorgeous I've seen but the sales person that I worked with was sub-par at best. I had visited several times to get samples, driving back and forth from Vancouver, WA. I finally was able to put together some tile and colors together that I thought would go well with our new kitchen. I was hoping to get a little "design" help from the sales person but she agreed with everything. I could have said teal, brown and bright orange and she would have said "great". I would have hoped that spending as much as I did on tile that I would have had a tiny, just a tiny bit of design assistance or forward thinking from her. I placed my Pratt Larson order January 2012- I did received my order in about 8 weeks (a little over the due date but I was ok waiting).,, when I received the tiles I noticed the netting of the tiles was so sloppy! Pieces were attached crooked, and the spacing of tiles on the netting were all over the place.. No consistency! My installer had to actually remove the tiles from the netting to and hand lay the pieces! Additional, Pratt Larson miscalculated how many tiles make up a square foot and shorted me 13 square feet of my wall tiles and about 7 square feet of floor tiles, instead of immediately shipping the tiles to make up for the error, I had to wait another 4+ weeks to receive the wall tiles and now 5 months after my original order date, I am still waiting for my floor tiles- they can't match the color to the original order even though they asked me to send a control sample... They originally asked me to fed ex control samples from my floor which i did- I imagined I would receive my tiles asap and that this was a priority - 2 months later I received the floor tiles and they were totally a different color than my original order! What was the point of sending a control sample? I refused the tiles and was told they would run it for me 1 more time (as if I did something wrong) but I would need to send a control sample again AND they would send me a sample back to approve before running the order! Control samples were sent to them and 4 weeks later I receive a sample- the texture of the tile is totally different - I had ordered a matte finish - the new sample was shinny-they said they didn't know how to get a matte finish anymore even though it's an offered color/texture ... but the color was closer so in an effort to get this nightmare behind me, i approved the sample... 4 weeks after that they sent photos of the tile they ran and it again is NOT the right color! It's not at all like the sample they sent me- the purpose of taking an extra 8 weeks was so they could work on a sample- know what the color combination was to get that result and guarantee a finished product - well - it didn't work- tile doesn't match and now with 3/4 of my job done- they suggested I cancel the order and just order all new floors! By the way, did I mention I spent $8000 on these tiles for a tiny bathroom? There is NO accountability, no customer service or sense of responsibility - absolutely the worst company ever! Stay away! And by the way, The most frustrating part is the wait! read more
