I went to purchase a breakfast sandwich, but the cashier rang it up at fifty cents more the the sign said. When I mentioned this she said her price was correct. We went over to where the price sign was; she looked at the back and said it was an old sign, then removed both that sign and another. She said she would not sell it to me at the advertised price. That is deceptive. Who knows how many people are distracted and not paying attention to them charging a higher price than what is prominently displayed. Thankfully, since there are many other eating options in Union Station, I got my food elsewhere. If you patronize this place, be sure to watch that they don't overcharge you because the staff don't seem to understand the concept of false advertising. read more

Great place to grab a quick bite for lunch or if you are stuck bored in Union station! They always have fresh pastries and a nice selection of both hot and cold items for food! This time I got the butternut squash and ricotta mac and cheese and the almond croissant, and they were both delicious! They also have hot soups and pretty good coffee! It doesn't get any easier for a fast, reliable, fresh lunch. All pre-prepared fresh on the day they're sold, straightforward, and mostly satisfying. I work right next door so I admit I tire of Pret's offerings from time to time, but they're varied enough that I go regularly. Some of my favorites are the Spicy Avocado BLT (seasonal), the california club, the lentil soup, and the fajita salad with fresh lime and caesar dressing. Although they also have a great selection of small snacks (fresh fruit, chia pudding, avocado bowl etc)... I can't bring myself to pay $6 for 3 mouthfuls of food no matter how healthy it may be. read more

This Pret location is a welcome, more healthful option at Union Station, which runs the full gamut of chain and fast food establishments. The food is fresh, organic, and yummy - whether you're a carnivore or vegetarian. I love all their soups and salads; even though there's a lot from which to choose, I always seem to get the Tuna Nicoise. I've seen comments about the prices. Yup. Welcome to DC. And Union Station. Most of the surrounding places are actually a bit higher. Sure, there are cheaper options - at the nearby McD's, food court downstairs, and food trucks outside - go for it! I am so excited they opened this Pret in Union Station. They have great fresh grab-and-go sandwiches and other foods, and a really friendly always-smiling staff. It is a tad on the expensive-cheap side but well worth it (try the Diablo Shrimp Wrap or falafel wrap)! Also, it looks fantastic. I work near here, and this used to be a pretty depressing location with the old post office here. Now it's open and shiny and pretty. Yay!! read more

Slim chicken and bacon sandwich, blueberry greek yogurt pot, and a water. This is my usual, and it is so, so good. The pine nuts in the yogurt are what really make it! It's a little on the pricey side, but the food is so fresh, natural and they list out all the calorie counts so you can make a healthy choice. I'm always here on business so the price doesn't bother me too much, but I'd pay it even if I weren't. It's become my weekly lunchtime jam in Union Station! Once I got a white bean and sausage soup. I was excited to see this place as Union Station needs more healthy, fresh choices but refrigerated sandwiches are just never a good thing. Maybe the breakfast offerings and salads are decent. I'm just reviewing the sandwiche which was barely ok. I made the mistake of choosing chicken breast and avocado on a baguette. No baguette should ever spend time in a fridge as the bread loses the same elements that make it shine in the first place. It didn't help that the bread was not too good to begin with. If your business mantra is based on freshness, than how can you use a mealy tasteless tomato on your product? All in all, my meal was a disappointment. Ok, I eat here all the time, because they serve quality food with quality ingredients (and I'm not cost-conscious). *Throat clear* However.... the other day I took a bite of my cranberry orange muffin, and it was cold. As in, it hadn't fully defrosted yet. "Wait, I thought that they baked these fresh!" methinks. I was disappointed. The wrapper boasts, "We bake our baguettes, pastries and croissants every hour." Hmmm, is a muffin not a pastry? Ok, maybe that is Pret semantics, oh well. I went back the other day, and I saw an employee placing muffins into the display case from a cardboard box. Yep, I thought, their muffins aren't fresh baked, otherwise it would be coming out of a muffin tin. But then my eyes honed in on the sign in the display case: "Cranberry Orange Muffin. Fresh from the Hot Oven." (or something along those lines). No, Pret, that's deceptive advertising! You do not get to boast about fresh baked muffins that yes, in all fairness, have spent time in an oven at some point, while having amnesia about all the time they spend in a freezer! I've been to this Pret a few times and the service has been consistently good. It's super convenient for me when I need to grab something quick before catching the boltbus. I usually grab a slim ham and cheese sandwich with a bag of sea salt chips. I'm in and out within five minutes. It's also close to one of the metro entrances. The staff does a good job keeping the place clean. All in all, good food and good service--I'll be back the next time I'm at Union Station. read more

Giving it a three due to lack of focus of barista. Ordered my decaf cap, she starts making it, then gets distracted making miso soup for someone, which they breaks off to give someone their panini, which was proper. Then, however, instead of wrapping up my cappuccino, goes back to making the customer's, who was 3 behind me, two miso soups (it went from one to two). Our train was delayed coming home from DC, so we killed some time with some coffee from Pret. The husband had a mocha, which came with a cutesy cocoa-sprinkle on the foam in the shape of a star. Coffee for me. A croissant for the kid. You're apparently supposed to get a cup from by the coffee station, fill it, and bring it over to the register to pay. Oops! The girl was very understanding in explaining where the cups and condiments were, and still allowed us to pay before I had gotten my coffee. Guess she's used to tourists! This was great since it didn't cause a holdup in our transaction, but probably not so smart from a business standpoint, since I ordered the 12oz and could have ran off with a 16oz. I know it's just coffee. But still. Thank you, girl on register, for trusting me. They had soy milk, which is always a plus if you don't do the dairy thing for whatever reason, so that earns an extra star on this one-visit-only review. Kiddo demolished his croissant (he's a bit of a connoisseur), so two thumbs up there. It was crusty on the outside, fluffy, and warm. There weren't many left in the case, but you could see some fresh ones cooling on a rack behind the counter. There were cases with prepared sandwiches, wraps, salads, and soups, as well as bottles and cans of soda, juice, and water. Bags of potato chips. I normally eat here everyday due to the proximity to work. I usually have the roasted beef baguette sandwich, which is delicious. Today, they didn't have that. I walked around looking for a different meal, returned to Pret, and decided to try their spicy meatball Mac and cheese. I returned to my workplace, and I was about 2/3 of the way done, when I saw a curly black hair stuck to one of the pasta. Needless to say, I didn't finish. As a red line metro commuter, I come here in the mornings to grab my lunch - Balsamic Chicken w. Avocado sandwich. The bread is fluffy, the avocado fresh, and the balsamic sauce is on point. They also have a hot wrap section. I love their pulled chicken BBQ wrap. That steaming hot wrap with sweet BBQ sauced is so so good. 4.5 stars! Pret really sets the bar for all other on-the-go food chains in terms of quality and concept. It's name drew curiosity in me the first time I passed by one of its stores. Since I discovered a Pret in Union Station, close to my dormitory, I've frequently stopped by in the mornings on my way to work for a salad, sandwich, and/ or other items to bring for my lunch. You can taste the quality and freshness of their food ingredients. I'm impressed by the customized and ergonomic design of their packaging. Their company concept is also thoughtfully communicated to their customers on the package. Every time I go to this Pret, I noticed how the staff always greet their customers with a pleasant attitude and friendly faces. This is not the case at other chains ( i.e. Au Bon Pain, Cosi). Unfortunately, we don't have a Pret on the West Coast, but I can see why though, a chain like this survives best in a big metropolis, where the primary mode of commute is public transportation. read more

Anytime I come here it's for the coffee. They have self-serve organic coffee stations in both regular and decaf. It's all laid out there for you to help yourself. What I like is that they have both milk (skim/2%/whole) and soymilk (rare) and all are organic as well (even rarer). The price is very reasonable ($1.50ish) and the service is exceedingly fast. So for that reason, I sometimes go here to grab a cup of joe when I'm in the vicinity. read more

I was skeptical of Pret before I went there because my experience with pre-packaged sandwiches has been pretty limited to gas stations and those wheel of death vending machines. So, I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty and fresh they were. The bread is quality, not soggy. The ingredients are generously portioned and in interesting combinations. They really are actually better than the made to order sandwiches at a lot of the other Union Station stops, plus you don't have to wait. It is also probably the cleanest looking restaurant in the station. I'm not that big a fan of their hot wraps. They get a little hard and I just haven't liked the fillings (a little too salty, I think). Oh well. The small salad cups with quinoa are very filling. You will be surprised. They have really good cookies and usually they are still warm. They used to have one called something like coco-nut that was awesome, but probably good for me/my wallet that they don't seem to offer it anymore. It's a great place to pick up a snack for the train ride. read more

Always consistently good food. My co-worker Ioves their salads. To quote her: "good portions and always fresh ingredients. A safe bet if you do not know where else to go." They have many locations in NYC so I was thrilled to see that the Union Station has a location, just like at home. My faves are the coffee, cheese sandwiches, and shrimp wrap. Healthy and tasty. I love their motto on the napkins: "made today, gone today. Every night we give our food to the hungry rather than selling it the next day". Get it and go. I like this place because it has items that you can just grab and be on your way. When you're passing through Union Station you're going to a train or you're going to a work site. Either way I don't want to spend a whole lot of time standing in line or waiting for a sandwich to be prepared. You pick it up, you pay for it, you're on your way. The only problem I have is that this place is very expensive. I mean, heavens to betsy. My word. Oh my goodness gracious. If you just want a piece of bread to occupy space in your stomach during the hour long train ride home, then it's going to cost you. A slice of ham or turkey with a lettuce leaf in between two pieces of bread is over five bucks. I always try to avoid having to go to this place, but if I'm so hungry that I have the euryeurbs (when my stomach is going "eury-eury-eury-eury") and I'm starting to feel feint, then this is my go-to place. read more

Customer service here is not great. Slow and I think I was just ripped off. I got the caprese sand which is $4.99 I believe plus a cookie for $1.99. So why was my total $9.48?? I live right next to Union Station so Pret is always a good choice for when I'm on the go. They have a variety of eats from coffee to pastries to sandwiches to soups! I like this location because it is always well-stocked and the customer service is great. My favorite is the chicken mozzarella baguette or the chicken avocado sandwich with balsamic. It's a great lunch spot if you're in a hurry or if you want to stop in for breakfast, they have pastries and yogurt parfaits as well! I keep coming back because everything is always freshly stocked. So much that one time I tried to purchase a soup at around 8 PM and the cashier wouldn't let me because he said that it had been sitting out for too long so he insisted that he make a fresh cup for me :) read more

I was checking out Au Bon Pain in Union Station, but they don't really have much that's vegan. I've never heard of Pret A Manger, which was right across the hall, so I figured I'd see if they had anything vegan (though I want holding my breath). To my surprise, they had several vegan options (specifically marked vegan, too!), including sandwiches and wraps. I couldn't decide between the Nori Veggie Wrap and one of their avocado sandwiches, and since I wanted to ensure I wouldn't be hungry on the train, I ended up getting both. I tried the nori wrap first, and it was good. It has avocado, quinoa, lettuce, red peppers, and was wrapped in a Tortilla that was itself wrapped in nori. The nori was kind of tough, and the wrap as a whole lacked a punch of flavor, but it got the job done, and I appreciate the creativity and willingness to cater to the vegan crowd. read more

Pret has some of the most exceptional customer service in the District of Columbia. The staff is friendly, inviting & that alone makes the mornings a tad bit better. And the organic coffee with the organic sugar is simply divine. The coffee isn't bitter (like other places) and it is always super fresh & HOT even after the five minuet walk to my office. Sometimes I purchase the ham and cheese croissant, the bacon, egg and cheese wrap, salad and the list goes on. Truly excellent fast food Every time I eat at Pret A Manger I am reminded how awful mainstream US fast food restaurants can be. And grateful that hordes of people go to them so that the line at Pret is merely long and not OMG horrendous. Everything is fresh and delicious and just wonderful. This visit we had their roast beef and California club sandwiches, one of their veggie wraps, and their cold pea and mint soup. The roast beef sandwich was outstanding with crusty bread, rare roast beast, tasty cheese, and a bunch of veggies combining to make the perfect sandwich. The pea soup was also just amazingly delicious with bright flavors from the mint and other herbs accenting the earthy sweetness of peas. The veggie wraps was great and the California club merely good. As 'goes with' we had some tasty Salt & Vinegar crisps, a cucumber spritzer, and sparkling water. The service was friendly and fast and we even found a seat to grab some lunch before heading off to our train. Most excellent. read more

Service is almost always great, but some of the employees can have attitude at times. I was in there last week and was buying a salad. I had the nerve to ask for a small cup of water, and the female employee says very loud back to me, " there's a $2.00 charge for a cup of water starting today". Clearly she was trying to embarass me or see my reaction. I get that the employees can get annoyed at someone asking for a FREE cup of water, but that is all that I really want!! I don't do caffeine after noon, I don't do soda often, and I don't want a full bottle of water. I said fine for $2.00 water, and then she laughed at me because I believed her!!
