I've been to Prime & Provisions multiple times, and it never disappoints. While I've only experienced their happy hour, it's become one of my absolute favorites in Chicago. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, with an upscale yet inviting atmosphere, and the service has always been attentive and friendly. FOOD: The main reason I keep coming back is for the oysters. They're currently $1.50 each during happy hour (they used to be just $1), but they're still an incredible value considering how fresh they are. They're served with a lemon-ginger mignonette and cocktail sauce, and they're so good that my husband and I usually order five dozen. The happy hour bar bites are also half off, and honestly, I've loved everything I've tried. My favorites include the prime chili, house-cut potato chips, lobster rolls, petite dry-aged cheeseburger, and fried chicken sliders. If you're with a group, I highly recommend ordering a little bit of everything--you really can't go wrong. One item I always order that's not part of happy hour is the bone marrow. It comes with toasted sourdough bread and is absolutely delicious. It's easily the best bone marrow I've had so far, and it's worth adding to your meal every time. DRINKS: Happy hour cocktails are $12, which is another great deal. I usually order either the dirty martini or the espresso martini, and both are consistently excellent. The dirty martini comes with blue cheese-stuffed olives (I believe you have to request them), which is the perfect finishing touch. Prime & Provisions is one of my favorite happy hour spots in Chicago. While the oyster prices have gone up over the years, they're still well worth it for the quality. Yesterday, we celebrated our 10th anniversary at our favorite restaurant, Prime & Provisions in Chicago. After the restaurant reopened following the kitchen fire and remodeling, we couldn't wait to come back because we have always had outstanding experiences there. While the ambiance and food were excellent, the service was disappointing. We ordered a bottle of wine, but it didn't arrive until we had already started eating. Throughout dinner, we had to pour our own wine because our server was rarely around. At a restaurant where guests are willing to spend $$$$$, attentive service is an important part of the experience. We hope this was simply the result of a new staff still learning. We look forward to returning and hope to once again experience the exceptional service that has always made Prime & Provisions one of our favorite restaurants. read more

Prime and Provisions is a good spot for an elevated dinner, whether you're alone or with a group. A go-to spot for after work gatherings and socializing, the bar can be very packed and loud, but the dining areas are more comfortable and cozy. The staff are always attentive and take special care to make sure all your needs are met. The food never misses. I recommend the potato skin caviar as a starter with any of their salads and soup. I had a lovely solo dinner here. I expected to be seated at a tiny table or at the bar, but to my surprise, I was placed at a spacious booth. I ended up ordering a glass of chardonnay, the 45-day dry aged 16 oz rib-eye, and sides of broccoli and mac & cheese. One word--DELICIOUS. The rib eye was cooked perfectly medium rare. It paired well with the steak seasoning on the side (salt, pepper and other herbs), the roasted garlic, or simply on its own. The broccoli was surprisingly flavorful and I finished the entire bowl. The Mac & cheese was just as tasty and added a nice balance to the meal. The interior is dimly lit, and can be a bit loud. So probably not ideal for young children. The service was top notch, and my water glass was routinely filled without me needing to ask. I was so full I didn't get to try dessert, but I left the restaurant a happy dinner. Re visited on the re opening night Saturday 7/18 and a pound of skimpy crab legs were $400, this is beyond pricey to sit at the bar, this is dining room prices. I felt taken advantage of, like your establishment is trying to recoup the kitchen fire renovation that kept you closed for 9 months all on my tab. We took a bunch of business clients here. The waiter bragged their had the best old fashions anywhere. We ordered multiple, we took the sommelier recommendation for a reasonably priced wine 50$ bottle. the old fashioned was subpar for Chicago. I ordered the colossal lobster and split a porterhouse with my business partner. The lobster was great but not amazing for 95$. The porterhouse was internally correct but burned on outside. They messed up our desserts. I would have complained if there without company. Won't recommend them or go there again. The restaurant was slightly loud. read more

Came here for my 30th birthday and the dinner was amazing. I've never had steak like this before. Every app and side we got was just cooked perfectly and the taste was off the charts. This is a well kept and well designed restaurant. It's dimly lit in the first bar area, and has a nice larger dining room that is well lit and good for more formal dinners/celebrations. Most everyone is rather formal in this restaurant, which caught us a bit off guard, but do ensure to dress appropriately, but I appreciate the staff not turning us away in normal Jeans etc. The service was good, but almost too attentive. Our server spent a decent amount of time rearranging our dishes, and serving us some of our sides which is something I just don't enjoy. By the time things were rearranged and served some sides, our steak was already lukewarm as is since it was a pre-sliced bone in steak. Now onto the food. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I've ever had, and the mac and cheese was easily excellent. The steak was well cooked with a good temp and not over-seasoned. The sides are delish, the service is great and the ambiance is hip business chic. I stopped by for a birthday dinner for a friend. The restaurant has two floors. The low lighting and decor create a romantic, chill atmosphere. There is no denying that the restaurant is stunning visually. My issue is with the service. Before my friend arrived, I sat at the bar. The bartender did a good job on the drinks, but when I asked where the bathroom was he said it was upstairs. I went upstairs, in high heels, which was a task. When I came back downstairs, a guest and I noticed that there was a bathroom nearby downstairs. We weren't sure why he told me upstairs when it was one nearby. The food was just okay to me. I did like the arugula that came with my crab cake - but everything else I ordered was underwhelming. I understand we were a large party of ten. Dined here over restaurant week. Though we had a reservation they seated multiple tables who were walk ins before us. We weren't given restaurant week menus initially and when we got them, they brought one menu for three people. Our server wasn't very pleasant at first but once the restaurant cleared out a bit he was cracking jokes and in a better mood. We did have to ask for our drinks and water multiple times. There was a little un-satisfaction because they seated us at booth right close to the door and my s/o was cold because of her dress. Our first course was the Thick-cut bacon and Lump Blue Crab Cakes, which were both very good appetizers, definitely recommend the crab cake. For our entrees, we order Short-Braised Ribs and Pan-Seared Salmon with sides of Sautéed Broccoli and Mac & cheese. Our entrees were good but when I tell you that Mac & cheese stole the show! I would recommend that Mac & cheese ALL DAY. I would also recommend that short-braided ribs with the polenta base, was very tender and flavorful in combination with the polenta. Overall food rating would be 9.5/10 (cumulative). All in all, I definitely would recommend this steakhouse if you are looking for highest class of dining in the heart of downtown Chicago. This is a place you bring if you want to impress someone as it gives off a classic, traditional upscale experience. I would come back, but there are so many other upscale dining experiences in Chicago that I need to try before coming back. Not contrived. Bread service is still complementary! The pop overs remind me of David Burke's (RIP). The apps are great and they didn't rush us at all. The crab Cesar salad and the octopus were standouts. They coursed out each dish and made us feel very relaxed (no 90 minute seating limit in sight here). The drinks were really well done. Try the smoky Oaxaca old fashioned. The steak was on par with Bavettes and the dessert was amazing too. The Carmel cake and apple pie were both worth all the calories. Did I mention they are family friendly? Lots of little ones at the early seatings 4-6pm. TVs by the bar if you want to watch the game. Classic 'old-boys' club' style establishment with delectable steaks, zippy cocktails, and all-star service. While pricey, it is totally worth it for a night out, a celebration, or when you simply want an amazing steak! To start, I ordered six oysters, split between the east coast and west coast. The oysters were fresh, and the accompanying sauces (ketchup and horseradish, and red wine vinegar and shallots) complemented the brininess of each. I wish they provided an information card or talked through each so I knew which type was which. The bread service was a bit underwhelming. The bread was similar to a Yorkshire pudding but was stale, oily, and chewy. Perhaps the most obvious, the steak was the star of the night. I ordered the 10oz filet mignon with 'properly whipped' mashed potatoes and sautéed broccoli. The filet was cooked perfectly pink and was accompanied by a delightful lavender garlic sea salt and a whole clove of roasted garlic. Superbly juicy and with a crisp sear, I will definitely be coming back. Amazing. To end the night, I ordered the chocolate caramel cake. The crumb was a bit dry, but the icing and caramel sauce balanced it out without being overwhelmingly sweet. The staff were very attentive and even added a little sparkler for my celebration! Expect to pay $70-250 for steaks, $15-20 for sides, and $12-25 for cocktails. If I'm paying $60, $70, $80+ for my steak I want it to be the best steak I ever had. The steak I had was good (10oz filet) but it wasn't the best I've ever had. It was somewhat on par to steaks I get at my local chain steakhouse. I know, what a terrible thing to say. Here's the good part though. The burrata and summer peach salad is divine. The French onion soup was delicious. Even the broccoli was really good! The happy hour menu is great with $12 small bites and drinks. It's a great place for date night. She was all over the place even though they weren't very busy. She ignored the fact I said we're celebrating my wife's bday. Then, why ask? She didn't even respond with "happy birthday ". On a recent trip to Chicago, my wife noticed Prime & Provisions Steakhouse as we headed toward our hotel. We decided to check it out--without a reservation--during happy hour and ended up at the bar. The bar stools weren't in the most desirable part of the restaurant, but our bartender, Jeff, more than made up for it with his charm and deep knowledge of the menu. When he asked what we were thinking, I said we'd start with the chopped salad and octopus for appetizers, then split a Kansas City Steak as our main. Jeff advised us that might be too much food and suggested we skip the octopus and save part of the salad to enjoy with the steak. Instead, he recommended the Lump Blue Crab Cake and a couple of happy hour specials: Kaluga Caviar Potato Skin (with bacon, crème fraîche, aged cheddar) Grilled King Crab (with matsutake shoyu, lime, and béarnaise) It felt like we were at an omakase sushi bar--we just let Jeff take the reins. The crab cake was outstanding--loaded with crab, minimal filler, and served with a fantastic Dijon mustard sauce. Both happy hour bites were excellent, though I slightly preferred the potato skin over the crab. The Prime Chopped Salad (thick-cut bacon, egg, blue cheese, pepperoncini, red onion, cherry tomato, romaine) was also excellent. Before our 18 oz. Kansas City Steak arrived, I asked Jeff to add an order of the Properly Whipped Potatoes with a horseradish parmesan crust. My wife thought it would be too much food--but later thanked me, especially after we paired the mashed potatoes with a bite of steak. Perfect combo. The steak came sliced, reconstructed on the bone, and served sizzling on a 600-degree plate in butter--cooked medium rare and absolutely amazing. Jeff and the staff gave a friendly but clear warning: don't touch that plate! For dessert, I was eyeing the menu and it looked like a who's who of the dessert world--tempting and reasonably priced. I once again left the decision to Jeff. My wife said, "It's too much food," but he brought out the Banana Cream Pie--my absolute favorite. How could I say no? And yes, my wife was right--it was a tad too much to finish, but so worth it. The bill arrived, and I happily tipped 25%--Jeff deserved every bit of it. The service was exceptional, the food was excellent and abundant. While it's definitely a splurge, especially in these inflationary times, it never felt overpriced. I live a sand wedge away from Gibson's Steakhouse. It is my "Go To" restaurant whenever guests come to Chicago or my wife and I want to have a quiet casual dinner. We went there for Happy Hour it was great to start out-drinks were around $12+ not bad. We ordered an appetizer - the Kaluga Caviar Potato skins thinking that the entire appetizer was $12. We got the bill and it was $48. For. Four. Pieces. A complete rip off and completely misleading. I brought it up the manager and he acted like I was an idiot. We stopped by Prime and Provisions for a quick cocktail and a couple of their LUXURY BITES before some live music and everything was superb! The NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER was delicious! The KALUGA CAVIAR (YES!! CAVIAR) POTATO SKIN with BACON was absolutely AMAZING! As well as the GRILLED KING CRAB bite Our bartender, Ricky was so cool, engaging, and made the perfect cocktails! Visited this steakhouse in the loop on a Friday night with my husband. We purposely book this because they are participating in restaurant week 2024. This allows us to try a few different things on the menu at a relatively economical price. The ambience is really sexy here. lots of burning candles and chandeliers and surprisingly there was a hint of cigar smell. I am aware they do have a cigar part of the steakhouse but I wouldn't think you would actually be able to smell it. I like the smell so it wasn't offensive and it wasn't like it was burnt cigars. For restaurant week you are able to get an appetizer, entree and dessert. We opted for the French onion soup and lump crab cake. Both really good options. I was very impressed with the lump crab cake and would get this option again. Our dinner selections was to get the petite filet migon steak. We added for sides the macaroni and cheese and the brussel sprouts. The steak was the star of the meal and we were very happy with its preparation and flavor. Other good items was the bread service and the desserts. Overall a very nice dining experience. I would come back to the steakhouse. read more
