Priya is not only the best Indian food in Chico, but some of the best in northern California. Seriously. My husband and I love Indian food, and if we are out of town, we will often pick an Indian place for dinner. We've eaten some terrific Indian food in the Bay area, and a lot of not-so-terrific Indian food in Sac and many other places over the years. Priya always does well by comparison, and we've often left thinking we should have just waited and gone out to eat in Chico. Priya looks unassuming, and the parking lot can be hard to get into and find parking in, especially when the bar next door is busy. You can usually find a place to park around the corner on the street if the lot is full. The staff is awesome. We have been seeing the same folks for years, and everyone is always helpful and prompt. Inside everything has always been very neat and clean, seating is comfortable, and the noise level is low enough to easily carry on a conversation. We've had the lunch buffet and many dinners. I am generally not a fan of buffets, but it works well here - probably because so many of the foods are saucy, and they keep well under the heat lamps. They are also usually pretty busy at lunch time and the food gets rotated quickly, and the lunch buffet is a great place to bring Indian food newbies, with enough variety to please anyone. We've had vegetarian, chicken, lamb and goat dishes, and they have all been unfailingly delicious. We've come with friends who were particular about their food, either because of allergies or special diets, and they have accommodated (and pleased) all comers. Favorites are the lamb biriyani, aloo gobi, and of course samosas and naan. Their chutneys are outstanding too - bright, clean, vibrant flavors. It's a stretch to come up with any cons for this place. I might wish for more heat in some of the dishes - the spices and flavors are very rich and nuanced, but not generally very hot. Portions are huge, especially if you get the thali meal, and you can expect to have plenty leftover for another meal. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity. I've been to many Indian buffets and this has to be one of the best. The food is fresh, tasty and a nice variety. They keep the buffet tidy and well stocked. I tried every sauce and dish and I really enjoyed them all, not a weak link in the bunch. The restaurant is clean. Yeah. Yup. Yum. Just had to update before I leave the North State for Southern California (she lets out a soft sob of relief). This place is one of the few that will save your sanity in the Chico area. If you're like me, anyway, and really don't "blend" with the "local color" of Chico (which would be 18-year old "medical" marijuana users who use food stamps to buy beer but think deodorant is a luxury item, frat boys and overtly socialist hippie professors). And let me say, I like overtly socialist hippie professors-they provide me with a lot of ironic entertainment that I take as teachable moments; as a political moderate and social liberal myself. OK, that was mean, but I promise. It's my last cheap shot at Chico. The food is so good here, I just drove 75 minutes round trip to make it my very last sit-down dinner with the family. Quick tips for their best dishes: The lentil soup (un-freaking-believable) The Chicken Tikka (rivals the best I've had) The Potato Samosas (they're samosas... you can't really go wrong with deep fried potato dipped in spicy-sweet tamarind sauce, right? Am I right? Yeeeaaah.) Do any of those and you will NOT regret the $60 you will drop on dinner. Just don't do the buffet lunch. Buffet lunches are always disappointing... and gross. So just avoid. I don't typically hand out five-star reviews willy nilly, but Priya gets one with no hesitation. Their lunch buffet has plenty of vegan options, and if they fall short on options (less than three), they will bring another dish to your table. And they always bring us papadum because the naan at the buffet isn't vegan. They are always so helpful when it comes to pointing out the vegan options. They are all over refilling your waters. You'll never end up with a half-empty glass (or a half-full glass, but I'm a half-empty kind of gal). Friendly service, nice atmosphere, good food. We like to go to Studio Inn next door and order from there. They will bring your food over while you are enjoying a cocktail or four. I highly recommend this place. read more

I went here a lot when I was going to Chico State. This is probably one of favorite places to eat while I was living there because the food is so good and the people who work there are nice to regulars. I recommend ordering the dinner if you're not too familiar with Indian food so you can have a little bit of everything. Even better, you can go to the lunch buffet and sample a little bit of everything to figure out what you like best. Vegetarian dishes I liked: Malai Kofta (veggie patties in a spicy sauce) Vegetable Masala (they include this in the dinner most of the time so you'll get it if you order the dinner plate. Sometimes I just order this as an entree because I like it so much) Aloo Saag (potatoes in a spinach sauce) Non-Vegetarian dishes I liked: Butter Chicken Shrimp Curry Tandoori Shrimp Tandoori Mixed Grill I also like the samosas and spinach pakoras for appetizers. We always ask for the tamarind sauce to dip everything in and some mango juice to drink. I've never had a bad experience when I was there. Again, the owners are nice and will throw in your favorite drink on occasion just because (in my case, it was a free mango juice). A few weekends ago, I visited my girlfriend up in Chico. We were looking for a good lunch place, so we decided to try out the buffet at Priya. There were several really great things about their buffet but a few not-so-great aspects as well. Pros: -Great selection: They had tons of dishes (especially meat dishes). They even offered goat curry. The only thing I wanted that they didn't have was saag paneer. -They don't skimp on the meat: A lot of Indian buffets' meat dishes consist of a meager portion of chicken cubes sunken into a vast pool of sauce. At Priya, there were large chunks of meat in each of the meat dishes. -I'm not a fan of gulab jamun (too sweet for me), but my girlfriend said Priya's was really good. Cons: -There was no dish that was a stand-out, and none of the dishes were even the least bit spicy. I realize having a buffet for a clientele that is predominantly spice-averse requires toning down of the pepper on most dishes. However, a good Indian buffet should have at least a couple of spicy dishes. -The naan was basically just the kind you can get at the store. Nothing special about it. I've been to many Indian buffets, and I would have to say that Priya is a little better than average. If you are super hungry and in the mood for Indian food, you should definitely check them out for lunch. read more

Right, so, 8 months later. I've been back to Priya several times, the last time today for lunch. One of three things has happened: 1) They've gotten better. 2) They were always better, I just caught them on some down days. 3) 8 months of living in Chico has completely dulled my Bay Area palate, and the same food I thought was mediocre in the past now tastes brilliant to me because I no longer have anything better to compare it to. In any case, on revisiting this place, I found their Makhani (butter chicken) to be very flavorful, with only one gristly bit to complain about in an otherwise perfectly-cooked plate of chicken. The naan was light and tasty, and the rice pudding creamy with a few slivers of almond to add a bit of crunch. Even if #3 is the case, Priya is far and away the best place for Indian food in Chico. read more

Overall a disappointing experience. I enjoy good indian food, but this was lacking in many ways. The place is clean, and comfortable. Parking is difficult at best. When you are greeted, the staff is quiet and subdued to a point of almost zombie-like. There was no cheerful greeting, no hello or how are you today, just here is your table and water. The food was, for the most part bland. I cannot say it was better or worse than the average lunch buffet. I tried a small scoop of several things, and the curry vegetables and the mushrooms were both above average. The curry chicken had almost more bones than chicken. The nan was nothing to write home about. Overall, I cannot think of a reason why I would go back, and I would not recommend this place to a friend. However, in the past I have ordered to go and found hair in my food. I returned it to show them and they claimed they have changed it. I went back home again , and yet again I find that hair! I'm giving them a second chance. Lastly, I think they should really work on the decor , smell and cleanness. WOW! A friend took me here when I mentioned that "Sure, I like Indian." I was blown away by the food. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala Thali style (full meal) and everything that came in my meal was to die for. I was in heaven. The meal was around $14 but there was so much food it could easily have been two meals... I could not stop eating it though. The servers are very helpful and willing to answer any questions that one might have. Which is good for me as I am new to Indian cuisine. I hear from my friend that take-out is just as good. Since falling in love with Indian cuisine several years ago I have pursued various options throughout the country, coast to coast from small towns to large urban areas. Priya is hands down still the best I've tried. It is always delicious, high quality and ready to be enjoyed. I normally get the buffet, never have had a problem with quality, hygiene or availability. They refill the nan regularly and have several entrees, appetizers and desserts to choose from. It's a fairly casual atmosphere but still has a nice ambiance. Through the buffet I would suggest the samosas, mixed vegetable curry, lemon rice, hot nan and kheer for dessert. Butter chicken is better as a takeout option. I've come here during their lunch hours which is when they do a buffet I would recommend anyone coming during the lunch hours for the buffet if you have never been here before it's a great opportunity to try a little bit of everything and see what kind of Indian food you do like. Chico? yeah i know, weird right? i have only been to town a few times, but at first glance, it didn't strike me as a mecca for all thing curry. i brought my brother here after a day of helping him move into his new place, tired, hungry and a little agitated (spend a day with my family and you'll understand). my brother was a newbie to indian cuisine, and now i feel that he's already seen heaven, and nothing else will compare. luckily for him, he spends 9 months a year in that town, and can go at his will. but when he's forced to find some terrific tandoori, it will prove quite difficult. the meals come with a deceptively large portion of your main dish, along with basmati rice and a few vegetable & lentil curries, and of course, naan. i think my brother would eat at Priya once a day if he wasn't such a tightwad, and he'd be wise to do so. read more

The worst service I've ever received, we wait over 30 minutes at our tables to get menus which we only did because we went up and asked 3+ times while they ignored us. Finally we got our food and it had not only a bug, but also a piece of red plastic string inside of it. We left without touching anything because it was so off putting. They will cater their menu to you (I can get the Curry Goat for dinner anytime when it's usually only a lunch item & btw and its amazing). Tasty, authentic Indian cuisine at a good price. The place smells great, as so many Indian restaurants do, and the staff are pleasant if a little terse. The side sauces and dressings for the nan, veggies, and salad are almost embarrassingly generous while the food is spot on. They share a parking lot with a fairly busy bar and you may find you have to find street parking during peak bar hours.
