I always look to find a silver lining in products and services. After two engagements with this company, I feel compelled to leave a brutally honest review. We had what we thought was a clogged toilet that at some point extended to the shower drain in the same bathroom. I called Proactive, and to their credit, they were able to squeeze me in the same day although they told me they were totally booked that day. Since they had been out before for a leaky faucet, which they were able to fix (although the tech was less than pleasurable to work with), I decided to give them another call for my toilet clog. A tech I won't call out by name came ahead of schedule (great! I thought), and again to his credit, immediately indicated the problem was in the main drain line (to the city feed). Once he pulled the cover to the main drain line in the garage, things started going south (not in the right way). Once the tech realized that the valve flap was involved, he immediately started posturing the issue to be something 'they couldn't take care of', and it would be way too expensive for them to engage in. He advised that we should do this ourselves, or get a 'contractor' to work on it, as this was too difficult for him/them, to take on. Disappointment immediately set in, as we thought the issue was SO MAJOR, we'd have to break up the garage concrete and dig down to replace the valve the tech indicated was in serious trouble, and would cause the entire house to be involved at any moment. In the end, we called Bill Howe Plumbing, having never worked with them before, to see if they had a different opinion. Bill Howe's team dug right in, literally, was able to open the flap valve opening Proactive Plumbing said they couldn't do, because it was 'too hard for them', and was able to resolve my issue that day, for the exact same price Proactive plumbing charged me for doing basically nothing but scaring us and saying they couldn't help. Proactive seem to have basic plumbing skills, but for us, they were anything BUT proactive. read more

I had a leak in an outdoor pipe on Friday night and plugged it up with some epoxy putty to slow the leak. I called Proactive Plumbing on Saturday morning expecting to be told to wait until Monday just like most plumbers would. Mike picked up the phone and said he would be over to the house immediately. In the end my pipe was fixed promptly, politely and at a good value. He even helped diagnose an annoying problem I've had with my toilet for the past year. Service, quality, and value. There's always a few things I look for when working with a professional on my house: 1. Work habit (are they on time? do they respond to my call?) 2. I just bought a home in San Marcos that the former owners did some shady things to the pipes. Proactive Plumbing came out and fixed the busted pipe to my sprinklers, then went and fixed the hose mount in my backyard and fixed the water pressure/hot & cold water pressure in our son's bath. They did all of that in one day and they did it on time, cleaned everything up afterwards and it was at a very fair cost. Steve and his crew just finished repiping our home from polybutylene to copper, and we couldn't be happier with both the quality of service and the friendliness of Steve and Dave. Steve's quote was lower than the other quotes we received, and he recommended some great cost saving measures, such as moving the hose bib, which resulted in a $1000-1500 savings for us. He was very gracious with scheduling the work to be completed quickly to accommodate our tight moving schedule, and stayed within the anticipated budget for the project. Not only did Steve complete the work ahead of schedule, but he met with the inspector to ensure it passed inspection/was to code. When the work was finished, he arranged for the drywall to be repaired/patched, made sure all construction debris was removed and the work areas were clean. He walked the whole site with me before he left to explain the work that was done, and ensure we were 100% satisfied with the job. Could not be more impressed with Mike Baker and his team. Customer service, effort and seeing the job through are as on point as their skills set and abilities. Realized we had a gas leak a week ago, called SDG&E first and they shut us down. A friend referred us to Proactive and they saved the day. Carl capped everything off and Mike (the owner) was out the next day--after hours on a Friday, no less--to begin the process of cutting into our ceiling and replacing the leaking pipe, only to find out there was another leak. The situation was explained thoroughly, their team was in touch over the weekend and first thing Monday morning, were back on the job to help us get to the bottom of things--fixing the second leak. Carl was back Tuesday to reconnect everything he'd capped off, SDG&E returned to turn the gas back on and all seemed to be back in business ... until it wasn't. Range top wouldn't light and I sent Mike a text to ask if he had any pro tips. Called me immediately and walked me through the process--realizing there was air in the line, which pushed through after running the outside firepit for 15 minutes (re: Mike's suggestion). From there, both the range and indoor fireplace were back up and running within minutes. (Defeated, I was ready to call SDG&E in the morning and get them back out here. Instead, problem solved and ready to take the first hot shower in my home in a week.) The expertise and skills set is five stars, all day, every day--but the human element, the "bedside manner" and helping us through a very frustrated, foreign process--a game changer. Just moved into my aunt's place in San Marcos with my husband. We weren't getting any hot water in our shower in the master bedroom. I shower in the downstairs bathroom before work. Get to work at 7 am and I Yelp find "plumber" near "San Marcos, CA" and Proactive Plumbing shows up with raving and legit-looking reviews (check legit-ness by seeing how many other reviews the reviewers write because sometimes there are obvious fakes). Screenshot and text husband Proactive Plumbing and phone number. He texts back saying they will be there at 9 - 11 am. The husband texts me it will be $190 to fix. I'm surprised that they are there, it's 8:59 am. He says a cartridge replacement is needed. 9:23 am - I get a text saying "they're done." Wow. Less than 3 hours from yelping them and the job is done. We just finished a 5 month repair because of a leaking hot water pipe when my husband drilled into a stud to hang a fire extinguisher in the garage. Right behing the stud was the line to our water heater. It started spirting water and while he ran to turn the water to the house off, I started to search for someone to help us on a Saturday evening. I called one company first and then began to read their reviews. Paniced by the reviews that said that they never call you back, I called Proactive. He (I'm so bad with names) answered right away and said he was in Harmony Grove but would be at our house in Vista in a few minutes. True to his word, he was here quickly and had it fixed in no time. He was prompt, polite and did a great job. I did have to pay the $75 weekend fee but I'm really happy about the responce time and the work as well as the nice guy who fixed the pipe. read more

But Mike came to the conclusion that the leak was coming from our neighbor. He set me up with Quick-Dry to clean up the water. The whole experience was very painless. I am a commercial property manager. One of our properties in Escondido just got leased out and the new tenants discovered that the water heater was not working. I had proactive plumbing come out to diagnose our water heater problem (our electrician said the electrical was good to go.) The plumbing technician came out in a timely manner and communicated that we would need to replace it. They recommended a higher capacity water heater because the new tenants are planning on adding 2 more sinks. I asked to be quoted for a few different models. One the same kind that was already present and then one or two larger capacity as recommended. This way I could see the price difference and know how much we as the owner would pay and how much the new tenant would pay for anything beyond the original specs. I was told that I would receive a quote in the next few days. About a week later, I've heard and received nothing. I called and spoke to a supervisor who said they would talk to the tech and get back to me. Still no response. So, I called again, and was told the same thing. Nothing. Today (two weeks later) I called and explained the situation. The supervisor admitted that he dropped the ball and forgot to communicate to the tech. So the tech called me, finally. And had no idea who I was. He thought I was calling for the first time, requesting them to look at a water heater. I explained who I was. And he remembered. He said that his supervisor was suppose to have sent me the quote already. I told him I received nothing, and that's why I'm talking to him. He said he would call me back. I then received a call from another supervisor saying that he understood that they recommended that we get a commercial water heater and that we wanted a smaller one, so they will be removing themselves from this opportunity. I was shocked. I told him that that was not what I had communicated or asked for, and that we will be removing ourselves from them as well. And that is what I am going to do. I have dealt with many plumbers, and have never experienced so much confusion and runaround and miscommunication before. And all over a simple quote for a water heater. I've had three others replaced with no problem. It sounds like from the other yelp review's that they have been reliable for many others, but that was not my experience at all. read more

Hot water line leak in the slab...BE GONE! We called Proactive based on Yelp reviews (as well as my wife getting a good vibe from Mike when she called(...hey, you gotta go with your gut sometimes). Hot spot on our floor, sound of water running in the pipes...called on a Friday, and Mike was out on Saturday morning helping us with diagnosis and giving us options for a fix. Decided for a reroute rather than try and pin point the leak in 50 year old pipes...under a tile floor...and in the slab. Come Monday, Mike and Jim were out working on the fix and stayed until the job was done (hit a few complications along the way, but they were great with communication, choices, and their expertise the entire time), which ended up being later than anyone wanted. Not only that, a neighbor came to the door with an issue in their bathroom that they went and took care of AFTER they finished our job. (Please do not call them at all hours...these guys work hard and are dedicated to doing the job right, just mentioned this as an example of going above and beyond.) A day after my review came out, the owner called me personally and asked if he could have a chance to make things right. I was more than happy to have that happen. He came out the next day, checked everything over, mentioned that the remaining leak was coming from a bad faucet. I bought a new one, which he then installed no charge. He also cleaned out my upstairs faucet for me. Additionally, he asked where they went wrong and what they could have done better. I could not have asked for more. Had a backup of water into backyard. Suspected a clog in main line to the street. Called Proactive and Steve scheduled a time the next morning. That was great. His brother, Miles, showed up on time and started work. Very easy to work with. He did snake first after assessing the issue. Worked ok, but needed the hydro-cleaner. Called office and Steve came over with new truck. After about 45 minutes, the drain line was cleared to the street with silt and many root balls coming out. Thank you Proactive for being prompt, honest, polite, and there to help!! Mike and Art were both very responsive in helping me resolve my water heater issue in a timely manner. Background: My Bradford White water heater decided not to work starting Saturday morning. My water heater was still under warranty, and I just needed someone to do the Labor and do the paper work with Ferguson to process the warranty. Let me just go off on a tangent & vent to say how many SHADY plumbers there are in SD. I must've called 10+ plumbers Saturday morning.... many of which are not open, or those who did answer quote some ridiculous prices! One wanted $299 to show up + $295 for the work. A few wanted 1.5x rate for weekend/emergency rate. Most didn't want to deal with warranty work and charge me for new parts out of pocket. The most ridiculous was $685 JUST for labor, but would do me a "courtesy" to process the warranty so I don't have to pay for the parts. I told them to shove it. Back to Proactive. Art came out ~1pm on Saturday (within 2hrs of talking to Mike), got my model number, and got the part. When he showed up and looked at my water heater, he realized Ferguson gave them the wrong part (No fault of his) and Ferguson was closed by that time. He'd said he'd have to check in Monday morning when they opened. Monday, 8:15am, I got got a call saying he as the part. He showed up Monday on time, and fixed my water heater. All very professional service and I would not hesitate to give them my business in the future. I've blacklisted at least 6 businesses based on my interaction over the weekend. This whole weekend left a TERRIBLE reputation on the SD area plumbing companies I did get in contact with. read more

Friday night no plumbers want to help, some said they would call back and never did. My tenants have a new born and needed Hot water I was getting frustrated. Then I called Proactive Plumbing. Steve answered his phone at 7 pm on a Friday night. Steve offered to go that night and see if he could fix the problem. We settled on Saturday for an evaluation. He arrived on time gave me a couple of option. The best part was he installed the part to give the tenants hot water through the weekend for no charge, returned Monday and replaced the 10 year old unit for his standard rate. I was given other options which I like. So often plumbers, elect, repair companies tell you this is your only option. I know Proactive Plumbing is fair, honest and dependable. This review is way overdue, but I wanted to thank Mike, Miles and Steve for the great service that they provide at Proactive Plumbing! We woke up on New Year's Day to a clogged sewer pipe. Toilets wouldn't flush, bathtubs filling with water and water from the washing machine coming up on the bathroom floor. It was a real mess to say the least. It was also the first day of the year and that means it was a day that most business were not open, even for emergency service. Luckily I called Proactive Plumbing and got in touch with Mike who began to troubleshoot the issue. I told him all of the information that I had available and he said he could be over within the hour to try and get our plumbing functional again. We were so happy that he would take time out of his holiday to help us! Mike arrived and quickly assessed the situation, got his equipment ready and started working. He was able to get our water to drain after battling a nasty root intrusion in our main sewer line. We were overjoyed to be able to use the water again without fearing a flood! Mike also explained that this was most likely temporary solution to a larger problem. He was right. A quick camera inspection brought to light a failure in the sewer line where the cast iron pipe aligns with the septic tank. There was root intrusion and the pipe was not aligned correctly with the septic tank. He suggested replacing the last few feet of pipe that leads to the septic, so that the roots could be cleared and the pipe re-aligned with the tank. He also suggested we add an easily accessible sewer clean out, because our older home did not have one. His estimate was VERY REASONABLE. Best of all, he said that Miles could start the work the next day! I was really surprised, because January 2nd, 2017 was a Federal Holiday. Proactive Plumbing was helping my family on back to back holidays! Miles arrived early the next day, discussed the repair with me and then started jackhammering the concrete sidewalk and digging. He kept me informed of his progress, showed me the roots that were removed, informed me of some new parts that were required and explained the repair in detail. I was initially concerned that the required parts may increase the estimate, but that was not the case. It was a much needed boot that connects the pipe with the septic tank and I was very happy to have new one installed. Towards the end of the repair, Mike and Steve showed up to assist Miles. I felt like we had the whole Proactive Plumbing company working on our house! I couldn't have been more confident in the repair and service the company provided. I will definitely be calling Proactive Plumbing for any future plumbing issues and strongly recommend them anyone that is in need of plumbing repairs. I had a leak from a second floor bathroom coming into our dining room this morning and had no clue what to do. I spoke to Mike, the boss and even though they were pretty booked up today, he was able to free up one of his guys (Miles) and get him over within hours. I can't say enough about the job Miles did. We were afraid that the shower pan was leaking or that a pipe had broken in the walls but Miles troubleshot the problem and found that it was just a bad wax seal on one of the toilets. They were in and out in two hours at a VERY reasonable rate. I will DEFINITELY call Proactive next time I have a plumbing issue (which I hope is never). read more

When we moved in to our house a few years ago we knew the spigot in the tub didn't work, only the shower head. Also the spigot wasn't flush with the shower enclosure wall and water was able to get back there. After many failed attempts to calk the spigot to the wall I decided to call a plumber. After getting a few bids I found that Proactive was the most reasonable. Mike came out and assessed the situation and gave me all of the "what if's" that could arise. After a couple months of saving up the money to get the work done I called Mike back. He and Miles showed up to do the repairs. They replaced all of the fixtures with Moen fixtures, corrected the issue with the tub spigot and did so quickly and professionally.
