Service and wine list was fantastic for Harrisburg. The food was under par. The crab cakes way too much filler, the clam chowder was nothing special. The clams Casino was tasty. The bay scallop and crab and shrimp casserole was tasty but missing shrimp. The three stars reflect the stuffy old atmosphere, worn out carpet, out of date dishes and utensils, and my expectations were much higher based on the high priced menu... We went to the bar afterward.... we enjoyed the atmosphere there much more, if/when, we return it will be for the bar and maybe a desert.. will update review if/when that happens. We planned to stop at a different place down the street, and that place was closed. Saw the cool sign, and decided to give it a shot, we didn't even check Yelp before hand. We walked around to the front and came in through the main dinning room, I guess the entrance is the door in back by the parking lot, with lots of stairs. There were lots of cars in the lot so we expected it to be crowded, but the place is huge, plenty of room, we were seated right away. Started with the clam chowder, it was good, not spectacular. Lots of big pieces of potato and clams. The Oyster Rockefeller was really good, just seasoned spinach, oyster and a dollop of sauce on top. My wife had the walleye and it was one of the best I ever had tasted. I had the seafood in Filo dough, it was wonderful. Lots of fresh tasting seafood in a mild creme sauce that did not bury the flavor of the seafood. The waiter we had was very attentive and kept my beer glass full as well as my wife's coffee cup filled. If we were ever in Harrisburg again I would go to Progress Grill again. read more

Excellent meal! Realize it's a steak place but everyone in my party ordered seafood & weren't disappointed. The mixed seafood in pastry was more than I could eat & the crab & scallops ala Chesapeake was outstanding. The only complaint was the scallops in the pastry dish were a bit chewy. Great service! I'm not sure how this place has a 3.5 star average. I have eaten here countless times over the years, and every time the food and service are fantastic. I've had so many different dishes I can't remember, but I'll say the steak and the crab cakes definitely stand out. My b/f and I visit the Progress Grill on a Saturday night a few weeks ago and it was excellent! I'd really like to give it 4.5 stars. I'll start with why it wasn't a complete 5: The entrance was confusing... We made a reservation a week in advance. We parked in the lot at what seemed to be the front of the restaurant off of Walnut Street and entered there. We were surprised that there was no one to greet us at the door. We then noticed over near the bar that some folks had been congregating there and walked through some diners to stand on what seemed like a line. The people ahead of us were ushered to their table and we stood their waiting. We had to call out to the host to let him know we had a reservation and then he took us to our table. O_0 Everything else was great! The service throughout dinner, the food (fillet mignon and stuffed flounder with crab) the ambiance I completely enjoyed (plus I was in good company ;) ). It was very romantic and definitely gave you a classical dining feel. The restaurant definitely attracts a more mature crowd but we loved it. Folks near by were celebrating various events and were dressed semi formal: men - dress shirt and slacks, women - nice toop/sweater and slacks/skirt. I wore a nice dress with some stockings and high-heel booties and felt super comfortable (not over or under dressed). The price was reasonable. We were stuffed before we left and had to carry-out the rest. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a birthday or anniversary or if you just want to do something nice for a loved one or get dressed up and get out of the house. :) read more

This is the first place I've ever eaten in the Harrisburg area and it was very good! It is very crowded and they try to fit as many people in as possible so I felt a little squished as I was sitting in the restaurant. I ordered a steak that was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend ordered a seafood platter that was less than satisfying. My boyfriend then tried my meal a realized it was what he ordered. This place can be a bit pricey. read more

We ate here for the first time last night, 5/20/17 and we will make sure to go back when we are visiting the area again! The filet and lobster tail was PHENOMENAL! Cooked perfectly. The stuffed flounder....OMG, you must try it! The Greek salad delicious as was the chocolate raspberry Martini. I was just there today 1/17/15 and for the last 10+ yrs I've been a loyal customer...I can truly say that I will NEVER go back there again....me and a friend ordered the junior NY steak WELL done with a crab cake (which was $33.95) for it to come back medium well with a blood puddle on the plate so we waited for them to cook the steak more so it came back my friends steak was ok still a lil pink but he dealt with it but mine was still very pink so I told the waitress (which was very rude) who came back and said that she will tell the owner so after waiting another 10+ mins later to tell me they're going to make me another one so I waited another 15+ mins to get a fresh made steak that was more rare than my first one that the waitress claim the owner cooked it and specifically told me per the owner he's not making me another steak because this is their version of a well done steak and they can't cook it no other way which was a first EVER stating that was the restaurants version of a well done steak (with blood dripping) and said the owner said the next time just order it burnt...which I was VERY offended because of being a loyal customer and being treated this way I was very baffled by this kind of treatment so the rude waitress asked me if I wanted it and I said no so she snatched my plate and walked away to come back and say that they was not going to Charge me for the steak just the crabcake so when we get the bill they charged us $18.95 for 1 lil crabcake from a $33.95 charge for the actual entree....that made me VERY upset but I didn't react just will post this experience so you can be warned in advance if you're thinking about dining here...ZERO STARS!!! After doing some research trying to find the best lobster tail in the area (chain restaurants not included) the Progress Grill kept on popping up. The location is in kind of a weird area for a place that gets such high reviews on their food. When you first walk in the dining area can be a little confusing but after seeing the dishes I understood why this place was recommended. I came here for the lobster tail so that's what I ordered. Not only was it one of the best lobster tails I've ever in my life, it was hanging off the plate on both sides- which is amazing for how sweet and juicy it was. The only thing that I could suggest is to have it be more of a relaxed atmosphere, the food was phenomenal but just a little bit of a stuffy feel for the area. Will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes. A+++ on the lobster tail though! read more

This place is very popular especially among the older crowd so if you're younger be prepared for a place you'd expect your grandparents to like in terms of ambience and decor. The food is pretty good. But I have to say that at the prices they charge I expect every course of the food to be fantastic. Salad wasn't particularly fresh, the sides were average. Overall the food was blah. I had high hopes as the restaurant looked the part for quality. Nice atmosphere, professional wait staff, linen table cloths, great menu choices and fresh bread. BUT... The Greek salad sat in the dressing too long and was sort of covered up by the cheese sprinkled on the top. The philo seafood Chesapeake dish was Cold in the middle! Yuck. AND... the description of seafood on the menu did not match the seafood that actually arrived in what was served. Tiny TOUGH scallops...said lobster but hmmm... didn't see any. Shrimp?...didn't see that either. Had to send mine back to be heated and it came back looking like a rich soup of a mess. I ate it but was sorry I ordered this and wasted my calories on this rich dish. I opted for the Brussels sprouts side dish and again...YUCK...way over cooked. If this is one of the better restaurants in Harrisburg then next time I visit I will stick with Outback! The other three in my party all thought their meals were below fair as well. One said the lobster was probably the worst she had, the other said her Tuna was tasteless, and actually the third said her steak was good. read more

So I just moved back to area. Went here to eat with a friend. Food was ok but seemed a bit different then I remember. Couple nights later my wife and I went back with another couple. The waiter asked my wife if she'd like to add crab to her fish. She did and she liked it; however when we got the bill, we realized it cost $14 extra just to throw some crab on the fish. I think this should have been stated when we were asked if we wanted it. Then we could have made a more informed decision if we wanted it. Her fish went from $25 cost to $40 cost. The cherry on top was that our drinks were not listed on the bill; just a total titled "bar". Now I knew how much my drink was couple nts before and my bill didn't reflect same cost. I know from yrs past that sometimes they raise drink prices gif holidays,etc. I flagged down a nearby server and asked the price of our drinks, which was the same as first nt. When I confronted the waiter, he made an excuse and apologized, corrected bill. But the couple that was with us had the same problem. I just don't think I believe that this guy made 2 "honest " mistakes in a row. I don't understand why everything else on bill is listed separately, with its price, but not drinks. Upon entering, one is greeted by 1980's decor and a dim atmosphere. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. The food was fairly decent but not worth the money in my opinion. Our sides came cold and the rest of the food warm but not hot. When informed of the cold food the owner, who was seated mere feet away, did not come to consult our table on what we would have done but instead sent the waitress to inform us our only option was to wait and have them whip up new sides for us. Seeing as how we were finished our entrees at this point we did not want to wait another half hour. Would not return due to lack of professionalism presented by the owner personally. Under a similar situation at a regular chain restaurant such as Applebee's or Uno's at least one of the entrees would have been comp'd and included personal interaction with the owner or manager of the establishment. They don't have to try to be more than what they are....and they don't do it badly. You have your opinion, I have mine. You have a problem with it - don't go...simple as that. You said I must work there. Maybe you are a competitor trying to make them look bad. Won't work for me. I have never heard one complaint about the Progress Grill. We have lived in Harrisburg for like 16 years, and finally tried this place~! First off, I like the retro sign, and the fig trees planted on the side of the building. We went in through the front entrance and somehow we felt like we went in the wrong door? Anyhow, we were promptly seated. The dim lighting was very cozy, and the white tableclothed tables were begging for a date for two, which was us! The server was prompt in bringing us menus and we each ordered a martini. They were very delicious. My hubby ordered the french onion soup, which was one of the best we have had in this area to date. The rolls were very hearty, I used quite a few butter packets on my one roll. I had a side salad, and the freshly ground black pepper was a nice touch. I didn't care for the celery in the salad, but the tomato was nice. Hubby ordered steamed clams for his meal, which was very succulent and we could have eaten like 50 of them alone. I ordered the Kansas City delmonico, which is a delmonico with a bone. It came with a baked potato which I didn't touch. The steak was cooked perfectly, although it was a little gristly and chewy in spots. I would say it was pretty good, because I love steak, but I think Glass Lounge or Texas Road House would be my better pick. Plus it was pricey at 29.95. I enjoyed the ambience, even though it was a tad outdated in decor, I really enjoyed the experience. I liked viewing all the other diners which were mostly a 50+ crowd, I was listening to their conversations and it felt like I was with my grandparents. (which are no longer with me) Overall, a very nice place for a date and conversation. The service was very prompt and top notch. Progress Grill is great. I live in Seattle and I come visit relatives in Harrisburg several times a year. I always ask to go to Progress Grill. I do not like chain restaurants and am rather picky. The broiled crab cakes are delish. While I am in my late 20's, this place has a bit of an older crowd and is a bit pricey, so I think people like to come here for a special occasions. The service has always been great. Entrees come with two sides of your choice. The decor is lacking and located in a older building, but that does not deter me. I recommend Progress Grill. read more

Uh... these people are really nice but food here is an issue. We had the crab cake which was ok but the mixed shellfish number one option was bad. One of the clams in the clams casino was old and my wife vomited. Oysters Rockefeller was all spinach, no sauce no salt no taste. The stuffed flounder which came on my combo meal was old and had a horribly fishy smell.... couldn't eat it. Greek salad was great. Bread was average to below average. Am happy we went on someone else's dime or I'd be really upset. Other reviews are spot on regarding 70's menu, decor etc.... but food just plain sucks!!!! We had two great steaks done to perfection, and great service too! I pride myself on being a very good cook and somewhat of a foodie; this is one of the few area restaurants where you can get a steak that's better than what you can make at home. The other reviewer who said her diner can afford free refills, how can't this place is, brings up an excellent point!?!? Food was ok, but definitely not worth the high price!! Extraordinary dinner. Haven't been here for close to 30 years but we knew it would still be a wonderful culinary experience! Our waitress was awesome! Friendly and knowledgable about the menu and attentive! Greek salad is a must if you eat here. My husband had the king crab legs and we brought 4 home. I had seafood combo 2 which was delicious. I don't think I have ever had so much crab on 1 plate in my life! The wine was chilled perfectly. It was funny when we told the waitress it was the first time we came back in close to 30 years and she said the quality of the food is the same as it was then. She was right! The best crab cake in town. For desert we shared rice pudding. Best rice pudding I have ever had in my life. Wish I could get them to give me the recipe!
