Excellent coffee, wonderful owners, Mitchell's ice cream, and yummy food. I am always greeted with a smile and prompt service. This coffee shop is a Cortland treasure. The coffee is always perfect. The only fault, and it has nothing to do with the management or service, is the entitled clientele that sit for hours on end on their laptops, taking loud Zoom work meetings with no regard for the other patrons. I really like the food I ordered at progressive grounds. Their food is made with care in a clean place and pretty fast. The roasted eggplant wrap was delicious. Eggplant was roasted to perfection, making each bite deliciously tender. People that work there are polite and friendly. The chai latte could be a bit stronger. It was a bit too milky for my taste. I love this place. The menu has a lot of options, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is lovely. There are tables in the front of the cafe next to where you order, more tables down the hall towards the back, and they have an outdoor dining area all the way in the back. I noticed a lot of people like to come here to read or study or work which I adore. The back outdoor area has shade for some tables and cute plants. Went here for a quick Sunday breakfast. A very cute shop in the Bernal heights area. The owner is very friendly and gave us a good smile. I got the open face sesame bagel with their homemade kefta, glazed onion, and Swiss cheese. It was delicious and the perfect start to a Sunday morning. The best part was that I didn't get heartburn from it, which was a huge plus. Would've loved for the bagel to be a little more fluffy and thick, but it tasted great. My gf got a smoothie and I got an iced coffee. The iced coffee was just regular black coffee, but the smoothie was wonderful and delicious. However, they forgot about my gf's smoothie so we had to wait 15-20 minutes for it. Will definitely come back. read more

It was nice to see something other than a Starbucks or Peets but this place really isn't that Progressive in fact it's downright slow. One of the things I look for in any business is good customer service and the fact that the cashier couldn't understand my order for a small strawberry ice cream and consistently got it wrong by asking me if I wanted chocolate or mocha, then when I ask for in a cup she tried to put in a cone really bothered me in the sense that she just wasn't paying attention at all. Although this place makes you bus your own tables most people don't so it would be better if there were some towels or some sprays where people like me can bus my own table instead of just using regular napkins because each table was dirty. The orange juice that I ordered that was freshly squeezed was very bitter and not worth the price. It also seems like the cashier couldn't get anyone's order right including the person behind me who ordered a sandwich and had to clarify over and over Which sandwich they wanted because once again the cashier just wasn't paying attention. I'll give this place three stars because I believe in small businesses, and I really hope it was an off-day for that cashier, but this place really deserves two stars. read more

Progressive Grounds is a walk away from me so I've frequented many times before! It's a great local spot to come by for a pick me up or stay and study at. They have a lot of seating for you to bring your laptop and work, as well as access to WiFi. Their outdoor patio in the back is also very cute, a great spot to work outdoors or just chat with a friend. Their sandwiches are really solid, my personal favorite is the bagel with turkey, pesto, and cheese! They make it fresh and also let you pick whichever bagel you want and the type of cheese between cheddar and swiss. The bagel sandwich is sooo good and really hits the spot. The coffee is where Progressive loses a single star from me because it's very average. They allow you to pick from a wider menu of coffee but nothing really stands out as much. It's coffee I feel like I could make at home but am instead paying more money for. While their coffee may not be the star, it's still a good spot to get some sometimes at cause you're already getting breakfast or lunch there anyways. Overall, Progressive is a great neighborhood gem that I feel blessed to live next to and frequent. Progressive Grounds is a real neighborhood gem. It's a special kind of coffee shop in that it prioritizes serving as a hub for the community. On any given visit, you'll run into all kinds of people: nannies with toddlers in tow, construction workers pre-shift, techies "working from home," out of towners, elders catching up with friends...all feel welcome to come and stay a while. I think people come again and again for the good coffee, fair prices, and the warmth and welcoming of Marco, the owner, and his trusty crew (shout-out to Mabel!). At least, those are my reasons! The vibe is homey. There is a ton of cushioned seating, a ton of outlets, reliable WiFi, and a beautiful outdoor patio tucked away in the back. The one downside to visiting this shop is that some patrons do not have the courtesy to keep conference calls short and quiet. I have noise-cancelling headphones, but even still, this can be quite annoying. Once I was there and two people on two different conference calls were shouting over each other to give work presentations. This is less a knock on Prog and more a knock on the manners of San Franciscans these days. read more

Breakfast sandwiches continued. Stopped by here, and now have gotten the breakfast sandwich from there multiple times. Really happy with this sandwich. Croissants are one of my favorite breads for a breakfast sandwich so was excited to see it as an option since sometimes I find bagels too filling. I got mine with cheddar cheese, and it's always melted very nicely and has a nice flavor to it. Been getting mine with bacon too. Don't usually get coffee since I'm not a regular coffee drinker, but I did order a chai latte once and liked it. I've been coming to this place for years and have seen it "progress" to a great local cafe ;-) However, we made the mistake of ordering breakfast the other weekend, and it was awful. Not sure where to start. Between what I think is the powdered egg to the cheese slices that were just slapped on top of the eggs, the whole breakfast was just uneatable. I love this place for its outdoor patio, and there's even a long rectangular shaped indoor seating area that is separate from the ordering area that would make a great work/study area. So, definitely a great place to come and chat with friends or do work. Servicewise, everyone is really friendly and basically leaves you alone even if you camp out. I had my order completely messed up but I think the location, ambiance, and generally friendly service outweighs the food/drink quality. The coffee here is decent, though if you're a coffee snob, this probably isn't going to be your first stop for coffee on Cortland. The staff is friendly, but there's sometimes a line to order and a bit of a wait for the food to come out - it's fine as long as you're not in a rush. They have high chairs here, which I appreciate as the mother of a young child. The back patio here is spacious, beautiful, and welcoming. I love it and wish I had discovered it earlier. HELLAAAA outlets that make it perfect for studying/working! Lots of 2 person tables. If you walk down the hall there is another dining area and outdoor tables too. The baristas were super chill and welcoming. I liked their berry blaster smoothie. My boyfriend got their iced mocha and said it was okay. He liked my smoothie better. I got a large iced coffee that was exactly what I was looking for and the Croque Monsieur Laffa roll. I will say, the roll was tasty and well prepared but did have some flaws. I found that the béchamel sauce was really runny and wet, not the thick stable sauce I was hoping for. This made for a wet wrap that was kind of a mess to eat. But enough K-Tel nostalgia...it's actually a little coffeehouse and sandwich shack up in Bernal Heights. I probably wouldn't have noticed it except Jamie W. and I were looking for a place to have a quick lunch during our day-long N.E.R.T. training session this past Saturday. We want to be prepared for the Big One and get our hard hats, so we can perform Village People covers for the injured. Hey, if Joey Heatherton could entertain the troops... Anyway, it's a lot like Crepevine (note the pretty chalkboard menu), although all their sandwiches are lavash wraps. I went primo and went for the $7.95 Grilled Salmon Wrap with spinach, mozzarella and a lemon garlic sauce (most of the wraps are $6.95). For $3 more, I got chips, a side salad and a can of Diet Coke. I thought the sandwich was a bit too soggy and the lavash not as tasty as a tortilla could have been. But it does do in a pinch. There is a front area for the laptoppers, a living area in the back where the baby brigade took refuge, and the outside patio area which would have been nice had it not been raining cats and dogs. The place was pretty full with locals, so we were forced to sit outside, though the leafy trees did help to provide some barrier to the elements. Came here on memorial holiday. Parking was minimal. A handful of Dogs were all parked/ tied i the front place mingling with one another and sniffing all the humans that entered the cafe. The place was pretty crowded, barely any seats left in the back. Outside patio had a lot of cobwebs on the chairs and tables, but it's a nice breezy and sunny yard with privacy from the outside street. Can get a bit loud outside if you're trying to study, depending on the crowd. Place is kept pretty clean in the yard, although leaves and tree stuff constantly fell into my drinks. There's a few wandering birdies searching for crumbs from human food. The chimes on the outside was a peaceful serene to me while to some it may be a nuisance. In about an hour or two i was able to move into the back sheltered area where the seats to the wall on the right as you enter had a line of squeaky bench and a slanted table. The outlets on the charging station was ample to share, which was a nice touch and expected of any cafe around the city. However, the wifi was horrendous, worse than the ones at your local Starbucks. :( So if you're doing anything requiring wifi, I'd say try another place. The ambiance had a nice homey feeling with books lined to the walls and a real fireplace that appears to be just decor. The drinks were okay depending what you order. The berry drinks were over-sweetened. I hope they didn't add extra sugar because it would probably be the reason why it was so sweet. Fruit drinks always taste best with their natural already sweetened self. The tomato bisque tasted a bit creamy (mediocre). The bread that came with it tasted perfectly warm and lightly toasted. The wrap was nice and cheesy. However, the ends of the wrap is too doughy (like all wraps?). Would have been nice if the soup and the wraps came separate because both tasted better warm. Once you have one the other is already on the cold side. I probably would not go out of my way to come here again considering how difficult it is to find parking and that none of the drinks or food really stood out to me. However, for studying with a book and papers and pens, i might stop by one day, but i do prefer places that opens later. This place close at 8pm, and the worker tries to take out trash and clean around you at about 7:20 you feel the pressure of being hustled. So all in all this place is OK to me. The seating areas at the back of the store is like a homey and nice little living room. Didn't get to check out their backyard since it was already when i came here. Other then that, i decided to get the Small hot chocolate for $2.50. Pretty cheap for a small cup. But the drink itself was weak. It was medium to hot but the person who made my hot chocolate made the flavor flavorless and bland so didn't enjoy as much. I would have given this a 3 stars if the hot chocolate had more flavor. COOL -- LOCAL HANGOUT..... Ahh ... back in the college days when I had more free time - coffee houses were a gold mine! I remember - I used to make it an outing to find a new cafe once a week to chill and getaway from the busy bustling and just cuddle with a really good book in the corner somewhere and be in that "moment!" Progressive grounds is just the ticker! They have about three different sections you can sit depending on your mood -- and the amount of time that you have -- and who you are with. The front is generally for a quick bite, the indoor middle is a definite plus especially for those readers that like to take their time and hangout for awhile, and the outdoor I recommend coming with friends or with families to catchup or just simply to enjoy the outdoor weather. Generally for me -- I prefer to chill with myself and cuddle with a book in an odd corner somewhere and let the book take me away for a journey. But the last time I was here - it was for lunch with my bud at work. He really liked it especially the outdoor seating. He said it was nice and cozy. I do think it could use a heater for the cooler days - that would really cozy things up! The staff here have always been more than hospitable! They are always gracious and always smiling! The food here is not bad! I always order their wraps especially the "salmon" but their salads here are delicious too! The staff here is always friendly and efficient. They offer organic and non organic brew, wine and beer, and their food is tasty with a diverse menu. Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused them to increase their prices, but it is still worth it! There is always good musical vibes in the place, excellent WIFI, sweet sunny patio in the back, and a front street-facing seating area, or you can got to another back seating area for more privacy. I go in here all the time, so I was sad this morning when this guy yelled at me across the restaurant, causing everyone inside to turn and look at me. I was sitting criss cross on the benches, a bad habit I admit, so my shoes were touching the bench. I have a hard time hearing because I am partially deaf and my hearing aids were not charged so I wasnt wearing them this morning. The guy most likely thought I was ignoring him even though I wasnt which caused him to shout. All he had to do was walk over and talk to me if I wasnt responding instead of shouting at me. It was embarrassing and because I am deaf I honestly could not hear him. I stop in here weekly with my son. Not sure if I will come back. read more
