Awesome patio in back, yummy wraps (my favorite is the falafel - so fresh tasting), good coffee & tea drinks, even beer & wine. Great sandwiches and lattes! Had the salmon sandwich - and it was very tasty! Also, the portions are quite large, so you really could share a sandwich amongst two people. The staff here is always friendly and efficient. They offer organic and non organic brew, wine and beer, and their food is tasty with a diverse menu. Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused them to increase their prices, but it is still worth it! There is always good musical vibes in the place, excellent WIFI, sweet sunny patio in the back, and a front street-facing seating area, or you can got to another back seating area for more privacy. I highly recommend that you visit this cafe for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. read more

This is an update to a previous review . For some reason . This fabulous cafe has become a public dwelling for non customers. I noted this & now I am reading reviews from righteous people that think it's ok , to take up space , saying things like , no one else has any food or beverages , and I was going to order something , 45 min after I sat down w my laptop . I won't speak to , the yelps claiming the owner is rude & offensive . I have never witnessed that & Of course that would not be cool . But I will never side w people acting indignant about having to spend money , in a restaurant . Like , of course u must . Small businesses struggle How else do they make $$$ Rents are high & so are the essentials one needs to operate . I say Right on to the staff requiring a purchase to plant oneself . It's off putting to see 1/2 the place , non customers . This is actually mind boggling ?? I am scratching my head . So little self awareness . Wow . Anyway . This place is great . Many dogs are parked outside , and that can be slightly intimidating, but they are always tails wagging and friendly pups . I love the hummus plate , comes w a nice salad & warm pita bread . Walked in for a quick bite, got a smoothie and the half Roasted Tomato Turkey Sandwich with half Tomato Soup of the Day. It was so good for a fair price. They also still had all of their breakfast sandwiches available when we came around 2pm. Also one of the few casual delis I've been able to find in SF that have a large variety of options and also have so many bagels. Why are bagels / casual bfast sandwiches so hard to find in this city?? They also have an adorable outdoor patio and will bring your order to you to your table. read more

I stop here when I am near the area...the coffee is good enough and the menu is more extensive than many coffee shops. Service is so so bordering on efficient indifference if that makes any sense...the bfast bagels are a bit different...served in two halves open face and are hard to eat either with hands or cutlery. I go in here all the time, so I was sad this morning when this guy yelled at me across the restaurant, causing everyone inside to turn and look at me. I was sitting criss cross on the benches, a bad habit I admit, so my shoes were touching the bench. I have a hard time hearing because I am partially deaf and my hearing aids were not charged so I wasnt wearing them this morning. The guy most likely thought I was ignoring him even though I wasnt which caused him to shout. All he had to do was walk over and talk to me if I wasnt responding instead of shouting at me. Patio has lots of seating, shade and quietness away from the noise. Cafe itself has a wide selection including food, hot/cold drinks, ice cream and pastries. I got an almond milk cappuccino which didn't really have any milk foam and their 12oz size only comes with 1 shot of espresso when traditionally cappuccinos are served with 2 shots in that size. I love this place. It's got 3 spaces-the front which is sunny and can be noisier but not loud, the back room that feels like a library in terms of quiet( but I've gone there and talked plenty, it's often just folks reading or working) and a nice outdoor space. Oh. Yes. Good coffee, friendly staff, great owners(manager?), the usual selection of pastries and bagels, they make a mean egg and cheese on a bagel-overflowing and I've recently discovered their Mediterranean plate which is really good-homemade hummus and falafel-yum. read more

A nice quiet cafe for studying and getting work done. Studying at home can get hard at times, especially when the bed is at arms reach. Wanting a change in scenery, I found this place on yelp and since it wasn't too far, I decided to drop in for an afternoon study/work session. Parking was not too bad; the streets in this neighborhood are very narrow, so a three-point turn could become a five or six but it's not uncommon for San Francisco. On first glance, it looked like a very small cafe but at the end of the hallway is another room with more seating. They even have an outdoor area but was closed during my visit. I had a cafe latte and I thought it was okay. We're spoiled by amazing roasters located all throughout the city and this drink wasn't anything spectacular. However, the ambiance of this place allowed me to stay focused and I felt very productive during my time here. Excluding the random phone conversations and people walking by, it's generally very quiet. There's plenty of electrical outlets and the WIFI was sufficient for my needs, so no complaints there. If you're looking for a quiet place to study, Progressive Grounds is definitely a place to consider. read more

Confession: I am afraid to write this place a review because I love it so much I don't want it to get overcrowded or the prices to go obnoxiously high or anything to change!!! The space is great, the drink and food selection are excellent, and there are ample outlets for the study/work rats like me. The customer service is excellent too. I don't know his name but the main guy at the counter just had the best smile and is so pleasant and happy it's contagious. I've been here a bunch and have no suggestions at the moment to add! Stumbled upon this place on a rainy day when i was visiting the bay. Good amount of street parking and lots of cool shops around the area. This place has a back seating area that I didn't even see until I went to the bathroom, very cool, with lots more seating. The prices are fair and service is good. I went back to Progressive Grounds, like a fool! If I could give it -1 star I would! The location makes me come back, I live blocks away. This was really burnt coffee. REALLY BAD. Never again. Nervous Dog Coffee down the hill is so much better then this. There goes another $3 in the trash can. :( The older, heavy set woman behind the counter made herself unapproachable. Progressive Grounds reminds me of a cottage or cabin being in the progress of becoming a cafe shop. It suits its name. It is homely with a cottage-like dining area and wooden decor setting. Even the bathroom was in the progress of being changed into a restroom - it has a shower inside. Surprisingly, this spot provides Wi-Fi. A major plus on progression. The staff members are super friendly and they serve up a wide range of food off of its menu. Lavash Wraps, Coffee, Mitchell's Ice Cream, you name it. I like the subtle character that this cabin shop exudes and it provides a charm to this quaint neighborhood. read more

Dear Progressive Grounds, You certainly are a TRUE GEM! Why did it take me so long to come visit you??? I'm always in the Bernal Heights area, but for some reason I've never walked in here. Why not? I don't know. The only thing I can say is that I've been missing out & I am so glad to have finally found you!!! =) Service: Super friendly! It looks like a family-owned business, with the cute wife and hubby pair working the shop daily. Ambiance: LOVELY and cute. The place looks "cozy", but still quite roomy. I walk towards the bathroom & notice there's a nice nook in the back w/comfy seating and big pillows even. Interesting! Soft Mediterranean music is playing throughout the store. It's actually pretty cool & relaxing to hear. I've even caught the store owner happily humming along to some of the songs. It brings such great vibes to witness that. Location: Like I've said before, I love Bernal Heights and it's located right in the heart of it. There's a gym, church, library, nail shop, and plenty of restaurants around the neighborhood. Watch out when driving around there, if you're not a local the streets can feel a bit narrow to drive through Food: A BIG SELECTION of wraps, salads, sandwiches, breakfast goodies, and a wide selection of delectable desserts: apple pies, strawberry pies, cookies, biscotti, and mooooore stuff, like yummy banana bread even. I must come back here for the desserts, of course after a good workout that is. As a bonus, they shocked me by serving Mitchell's ice cream. WHATT!!?? Wow, they even serve a good selection... and seriously, who doesn't LOVE Mitchell's? AND by the way, THE COFFEE IS GOOOOOD!!!! Patrons: They have lots of them. I've been here about once a month for the last 3-4 years. Definitely was my preferred neighborhood spot. Like any other day and like many other customers I've seen over the years, I opted today to sit down and get some work done before a deadline and before ordering my usual. Unlike any other day, I was rudely interrupted and demanded to order something or vacate the premises after being told that the establishment was for paying customers. I looked up and saw a familiar face that I've seen many times over the years and politely informed him of my intentions to make a purchase when I was ready. He stormed off. I looked around and saw that there were a other patrons that were seated at their laptops having yet to place and order over the same 45min period. The gentleman returned 1 min later, louder and angrier. Insisting that I needed to immediately place a purchase and speaking to no one else that had yet to place an order, I hate having to share this story but feel it necessary. Also noting that I was the only person in the establishment of color. I'm not inclined to say that it was racially motivated, but I absolutely was individually singled out for reasons beyond me. With that said, I left and won't be returning to one of my favorites places to eat and work. read more

Love this place! I didn't know where to eat so I stumbled upon this cafe. Besides the typical coffee beverages, they also serve mediterranean wraps and salads. I had a grilled salmon wrap and it was grilled to perfection. The lavash wrap they used was grilled to a crisp, and they weren't shady with the fillings either. Parents with kids came in and out to grab Mitchell's ice cream. This place is just so peaceful and relaxing. They have computers with internet here too along with wifi access. I only wish they closed later than 8pm. Also, I don't know if it belongs to them but kudos to Progressive for having a Dogi Pot outside. We need more of these around the city. I love PG and have been a patron for 18 years. I used to work out of the one in the Mission years ago, and now I go to the one on Cortland weekly. The staff is so nice and the cafe is always clean. I have one piece of feedback if they're reading. The almond milk lattes are bitter and watery :/ It doesn't seem to matter who is making one, it tastes the same. Still love y'all and will continue being a weekly customer. I'll just be ordering a regular coffee from now on. read more

Cute place, lots of space in the back too, for reading and chatting with good lighting and comfortable seating. The service was super friendly and polite. I was a little mislead with the croques de monsier- it turned out to be a wrap, but I was envisioning something else. Nevertheless, the taste was good, quite filling- one half was plenty! Hot tea was delicious and they really used HOT water. That I can appreciate. Tea drinkers know that temperature is everything. A friend of mine introduced to me this place and it is now my favorite place to study!! SPACE: FANTASTIC place to study!!!! Don't you hate it when cafes are super cold and you just can't focus?? You won't have that problem here! When you initially walk into this cafe, you will see a small, breezy dining area, but don't be fooled as down the hallways is another area, filled with pillows and cushions, and is very warm and cozy!! Additionally, the cafe is always insanely quiet. On some days, there are mild conversations running about, but everyone is always very considerate of those studying or working in the cafe and it never gets too loud. It vaguely reminds me of a library that serves coffee and great food. It even smells like a library, because the carpets and cushions are kind of dusty, lol! The last few times I've been there, the patio has been closed, but there is always at least one or two tables available. STAFF: is extremely pleasant. They never make you feel bad for studying in their space. They also make sure that everyone is comfortable. This place feels like a communal living room! I absolutely love it!! FOOD/DRINKS: I always get their lattes. It's nice! Maybe not the strongest coffee because I find myself yawning after drinking it, haha. But then again, who doesn't yawn when they study? I've also had their ginger lemonade when my stomach wasn't feeling too great, and it felt and tasted fantastic! Ginger taste was very apparent and warmed my belly. Progressive Grounds is one of those coffee shops that when you enter from the cold, wet San Francisco streets, immediately you feel warm and comfortable. I don't know if it is all the warm colors (yellows, reds, browns) or the wood chairs or the fact that it's nice and warm inside, but something just makes you instantly relax. I recently met my knitting group (I know! I know!) here on a Saturday at 12:00. The place filled up rather quickly, but never felt overcrowded. I had a pesto chicken wrap - which was tasty and amazing. I will definitely be back. read more

2.5 stars, bumped up for the space. It's a nice cafe to sit and mingle, but also looks a bit grimey and old, like it had witnessed a lot of history. I only got a coffee from here so this is solely a coffee review. What can I say? The coffee just isn't that great. I had to add a whole lot of sugar just to make it drinkable - I don't usually, but I also hate overwhelming bitterness and sourness. In terms of the coffee scale, I suggest you go elsewhere, especially in a city with so many good coffee choices. It is a place you can sit and linger for a while though, unlike a lot of small places, so at least that's nice. read more

My favorite breakfast/lunch spot in Bernal Heights. I haven't had a bad dish yet. But for me the wraps with Kefta or Falafel are the highlight. Intricate concoctions of Moroccan flavors in an unassuming packaging. PG has laid-back, neighborhood atmosphere with muted acoustics, the way a SF coffee house should be. WIth a steady local patronage coming here for the usual things: a quick lunch, catch up with friends, read the paper, have an ice-cream with the kids. You can tell thought has gone into selecting and preparing Progressive's coffee. The result is superb, even by high local standards. There's also free high-quality wifi. read more
