Though the service was pretty good and the drinks decent, the food was really unimpressive and disappointing, especially for the price. The charcuterie board was fine, though it lacked variety and the meats were more like sliced hotdogs. For entrees, the gnocchi was super bland and overcooked, almost soggy. I'm usually not picky, nor do I write bad reviews for restaurants, but I barely touched my dinner. For a cute place in a nice hotel with other good dining options such as Spruzzo, I really expected much more than what we got. My family and I decided to come here for my parents special 20th anniversary. But we were Rudely interrupted when a fire alarm went off while we were dining. Everybody had to exit the building and waited outside for around 15 minutes. Stopped in for a business dinner. Really beautiful place inside. They have a really nice outside bar and patio. The service was very good. I ordered the NY strip and it was fine perfectly per my request. Had the charred Romain salad yo start with and it was superb. All in all an excellent meal. I tried Proper Grit for their Happy Hour specials with my girlfriend and we were a bit underwhelmed. Let's start with the positives though. The actual design of the restaurant is stunning. Different types of seating and very comfy surroundings. The staff was very good, our server was attentive and efficient. The hostess was great as well, the Happy Hour only exists at the bar and the bar was filled. The outdoor patio was empty but the weather was quite bad (as was the live music). So she sat us as close to the bar as possible so we could get the Happy Hour benefits. The actual "bites" on the Happy Hour are quite cheap and the serving sizes were a bit larger then expected. The drink deals were decent as well. Now time for the negatives. We ordered a blueberry old fashioned, as we saw them on their Instagram feed and they were on special ($8). The taste was pretty good but they looked nothing like the pictures we had seen. Think purple liquid with ice cube. The pictures had all these pretty garnishes with them. We really couldn't taste much alcohol either. We tried a bunch of the Happy Hour bites ($4 each) to get a good sample of the food there. The Cheddar Bacon Jalapeno Grit Croquets were bland and we got literally none of the flavors advertised. The Chicharrones with Chili Lime Dust were quite good and they gave you a lot of them. The Black Bean Hummus was average, we had to ask for flatbread (which they charge you for). In fact, the $3 extra charge for bread was just $1 less than the actual hummus plate! The funniest thing we ordered was the Grilled Cheese Sliders. Now mind you, the place is super upscale looking and has a great vibe...the "sliders" were literally a grilled cheese sandwich on white bread that they cut into 4 pieces. We actually laughed when they dropped the plate on our table. Apart from the nostalgia of my childhood, this dish is pretty laughable for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. We didn't order from the main menu, so I can not comment on any of those items, but judging from the "bites" we had, I would say this restaurant is all style and no substance. read more

The burger itself was seasoned just right and also came with aged cheddar, Dewey's pioneer sauce, bacon & pepper jam, potato straws and french fries. All went well with and a burger that could stand alone! ​ Last, but not least, came the Acai Bowl. Granola, coconut flakes, banana and seasonal fruits was the perfect refreshing treat to end such an amazing brunch. The fruit was fresh along with the Acai which was chilled and bursting with flavor as it mixed with the berries. This was by far one of the worst places we have ever been. Overpriced, poor quality and lack luster wine/bourbon availability. The wedge was so blah, the bacon app was over cooked and dry & the main dish was so bad we had to send it back. It's rare to experience a perfect combination of wonderfully attentive service, amazing food, perfectly crafted cocktails, wonderfully prepared desserts and beautiful atmosphere...right by the water...but that's what the four of us just experienced at Proper Grit, at the Ben Hotel in West Palm Beach, FL. We started with their street corn empanadas and the burrata with red and orange beets and were blown away by the flavors and presentation. Three of us were carnivores and one of us was a pescatarian so we had a filet served with asparagus (perfectly cooked with a sauce to die for), a bone in ribeye which was perfection and a NY strip that was possibly the best we've ever had. My wife, the pescatarian, ordered the salmon and it blew her away...moist, extremely flavorful and now she's spoiled. Even the mashed potatoes were memorable. Exquisite attention to detail seems to be the mantra here. The dessert we ordered was creme brûlée with caramelized popcorn and berries (who would've thunk it...amazing) plus a chocolate cake that was out of this world. Chef Dan, the wizard behind the wizardry, came out and explained each dish and how much pride he took in the Prime aged steaks, and the best Scottish salmon money can buy. He also spoke so highly of the amazing team he works with. It was touching and refreshing to hear. Joyalene, our server was so wonderful and attentive and a shout out goes to Randy the mixologist who made us perfectly prepared Old Fashioned's and other cocktails that were equally well crafted. The entire staff made us all feel at home and were just wonderful to us and made a birthday celebration an experience none of us will ever forget. Definitely coming back for their breakfast, which I've heard is amazing and lunch and more dinners...we checked out the rest of the menu items and they have amazing dishes for everyone whether they are vegetarians, pescatarians like my wife or meat eaters. Also the wine selections are extensive and reasonably priced. But the topping on the cake for me is their extensive scotch, bourbon and spirits selection. Truly a perfect combo of life's pleasures. I go to pick up the order and ask the hostess who politely sent me to the bar. I stand at the bar for 5 minutes without any acknowledgement even though 3/4 staff members standing in the corner. I finally ask a server walking by. She sends me back to hostess. After being frustrated I ask a gentleman in a suit and he found my order. Bar tender hands me a check and I pay without even one word. I signed a bill for 78.00. After four days of calling management to reverse the incorrect charges, I finally had to call my bank and file a complaint. Wait staff did warn me that they were having issues with their credit card machine. Just make sure you KEEP UR RECEIPTS!!! Oh... also, dinner came out about an hour late, and we had to go track down the waiter to get our drinks refilled. also it's quite expensive....I will definitely give it another chance, the rooftop bar is phenomenal. Gurkin the server is amazing.. and in general everyone greets you right away. Good coffee and champagne available at 8am. Maybe a couple dollars more than surrounding spots but non of them are even open right now and they have a really cool menu, everything from shrimp and grits to bagels to acai bowls. This is not a fine dining restaurant. This is a hotel bar that happens to have decent food. The decor is beautiful and comfortable. The service was fine, nothing special. The food was good but very heavy. The thing that made the visit so disappointing was the people!! There was an intoxicated man that was in jeopardy of falling, throwing up or passing out at any minute. Last I saw him, he meandered into the kitchen. I hope they were able to help him. There were 3 dogs in the restaurant. One that yapped a lot, one that was relatively quiet until the third dog came in and he barked loudly and a lot. His "mom" fed him from the table the entire time we were there. It started to feel a little bit like a circus. There was a squealing baby - I love babies and I don't blame them but it did diminish our experience. It goes back to my original take - this is not a fine dining restaurant.
