Went here recently for brunch and I have to give this restaurant serious props. The food was amazing: the ingredients are whole and fresh, so flavorful and well made. Their breakfast burrito is so delicious. The pastry basket is so delicious and different from the typical pastries you get places that it will ruin you for anything average after that. We were so impressed. And their coffee drinks are SO delicious. To date it's the best latte I've ever had. The restaurant is beautiful, plenty of outdoor seating and no one is cramped together like other restaurants on 5th. They do a really good job and are very responsible. Above all this I want to give a shout out to our server Gabriel. He went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience. He was super attentive, warm and even sanitized are credit card. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner, we were staying at the Pendry Hotel (which I also highly recommend), and we were blown away. The aesthetic here is really sweet and intimate, but also friendly and open with great lighting. Our bartender Eric was amazing. We had a great experience at Provisional , there was a little wait but they texted us right when the table was ready, The host was extremely friendly 7/29/18 and they were able to get us a patio table because we had my dog with us. The food is great, we got a goat cheese pizza and heirloom and burrata salad to share between two people, the quality of the food was outstanding. We also got two complimentary mimosas which was nice. What sets this place apart was the Customer Service. Our server Collin was 10-10, he was attentive, friendly and gave great recommendations of the menu. The food was out in a timely matter , dropped off by a manager (nice touch) and Collin checked in a few times to make sure everything was good. The busser was also attentive and friendly as well! They have gluten free options and a menu for the brunch lover. They have a great mimosa menu. I enjoyed the hibiscus mint mimosa with a build yourself omelette. My husband was more adventurous with a breakfast pizza and crab cake eggs benedict. Delicious! The atmosphere is upscale causal. They have outdoor seating available with music for Sunday brunch. Came here for restaurant week, but I won't be coming here again! I GOT FOOD POISONING! When my friend and I got seated, the tablecloths were smelly! It smelled like wet dog. First, I ordered the tai snapper crudo and my friend ordered the carpaccio. My entree was the pork chop, while hers was the chicken breast. Both entrees were lacking seasoning. Simple salt and pepper would have elevated the dishes a lot more. The only thing that we liked were our desserts. I ordered the basque cake while she ordered the rice pudding. That night my friend started to mention that her stomach was uneasy. Then later that night I threw up! I especially recall throwing up the crudo! So all night, I was not able to sleep because I needed to vomit. I understand the crudo is uncooked fish, but I consume raw seafood frequently and I never had a problem. Knowing that it is a fine dining restaurant, you would think they would have better preparations of their food. Overall, underwhelming experience. read more

Went there for my Birthday Brunch last week. Ordered the Breakfast pizza and it was delicious. My husband thought the Provisional breakfast sandwich was good too. Pendry breakfast looked good and my sister liked it. I think my sisters boyfriend liked his breakfast burrito. The caffe nicciole was good BUT there was a fly in the whipped cream of my sister's BF's drink. And when we asked for a replacement, there were TWO flies in the whipped cream. ‍ Their service recovery was good because they brought out regular coffees and baileys shots so that the boys could put it together themselves. Would I go there again? Maybe for the bottomless $20 mimosas and the breakfast pizza. Was it overpriced? Yes but it's Downtown San Diego and is expected. read more

Beautiful ambiance. However, the one vegan dish on the menu leaves a lot to be desired. $28 for pieces of beets, 4 leaves of endive and some honey and fennel cream at the bottom. Honey is not vegan so there's that but even if you get past that, which many won't, it was terrible for the price. The world has come a long way with vegan food but definitely not this place. Valentine's Day standardized menus typically offer little flexibility. I had called a few restaurants in the San Diego area looking for take-out options for Valentine's Day for my girlfriend and I. Given certain dietary restrictions, choosing restaurants can sometimes be difficult for us, especially when the particular establishment is unwilling to work with us to try to accommodate. During my initial calls to a number of restaurants the standardized response was something along the lines that their menu was preset and what was marketed was what was available, with no ability to alter or change. That was until I wrote to Provisional late one night asking if they were willing to try to accommodate my request. By first thing the next morning I had a staff member personally call me to discuss options and accommodate my every request. Customer service at its finest! I was not asking the chef to cook a dish I had personally dreamt of, just an option- 1 that might work for our party. Provisional and its staff made everything come together and allowed my girlfriend and I to have a great Valentine's Day. My fiancé and I have decided to review restaurants based on five criteria: Food, Alcohol, Cleanliness & Ambiance, Service and Value/Price. For breakfast today we went to Provisional Kitchen, Cafe & Mercantile. This restaurant is attached to the Pendry which is the hotel we are staying at. Before we get into the review I have to say the kitchen made my omelet with whole eggs instead of egg whites as requested, caught the error and remade the omelet without me noticing. As a result the food was slightly delayed so the manager comped the whole meal which was incredible and we didn't have to ask. FOOD Since it was breakfast and one of us was hungover (not me) we both had eggs. Karol had the Pendry Breakfast with the eggs over hard and the ham steak. I had the egg white omelet with peppers, onions, bacon, sausage and ham. The potatoes were fantastic. They use a Pesto flavor on their potatoes and that makes them taste really good. Mine were a little soggy close to the eggs but that was because my omelet was brought out hot so it left some liquid on the plate. Can't object to hot food. The omelet had great flavor and all the ingredients seemed super fresh. The ham steak was also really good and cooked perfectly. Overall the food tasted really good and deserves one star. ALCOHOL We both had spicy Bloody Mary's and they were pretty good. They use a Shrimp Cocktail as their base so if you like that flavor you will enjoy these Bloody Mary's. They weren't the best we have ever had but pretty good and just what Karol needed. They do have a full bar so there are many different options. Overall the drinks were good and deserve 3/4 of a star. CLEANLINESS & AMBIANCE The ambiance at this restaurant were really nice. The whole hotel including this restaurant has a modern industrial feel. The restaurant is large but not over packed with tables. The ceilings are high and you get to see the kitchen staff making your food. This is one of the better designed restaurants we have visited in a long time. The restrooms are hotel restrooms and are very well maintained. I also liked the decor very much. The ambiance and cleanliness was definitely there and deserves one star. SERVICE The service was exceptional as stated in my introduction. The hostess showed us to our table and brought water almost immediately. The waiter was super friendly and even offered to open a bottle of champagne we had with us without us asking. The champagne was a gift so we weren't drinking it with breakfast but the fact that he asked goes a long way. Finally the manager was very gracious in taking care of us for something that was a minor mistake. I have been to places that made significantly larger mistakes and didn't even apologize. I think without question everyone would agree Service is worthy of one star. VALUE/PRICE The value was great for a two dollar sign restaurant. The meals were $16-$17 each and the drinks were $12 each. That seems absolutely reasonable for a meal in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. Overall the value/price receives one star. In conclusion this is a great brunch place in San Diego. We will definitely be back probably for dinner to try their food then as well. The get 4.75 stars which rounds up to 5 stars. read more

The Pendry hotel is doing something right.... Lionfish & Provisional Cafe are my fav hotel dining spots. Had a simple but Delish brunch here last week. Hubby started with a well crafted Manhattan. I requested the highly touted Breakfast Pizza with perfectly cooked eggs, cheese, ham, Spinach and a great hollandaise sauce, basically like the best version of a Benny I have ever had. Soo good!!! Perfect proportions and that Crust!! Yes! Perfectly paired with a glass of Bubbly. Hubby had the tender and tasty wagyu flat iron skirt steak served with a perfect side salad of delicate greens. A tad salty but wonderful overall. Missed the morning mini maple donuts, but can't wait to return to taste through more of their great menu! read more

On a whim, we decided to drive down from L.A. to S.D., and since I'd never been to the Gaslamp Quarter, we took a walk down Fifth and saw this place. I saw the Croque Monsieur on the menu and it piqued my interest. It was a bit of a wait to get a table (reservations are probably the way to go) but once we did? WORTH IT. My Croque Monsieur, which became a Croque Madame with the addition of two poached eggs, was so gooey and crispy and delicious. I paired it with a great cup of coffee and a side of berries. We also ordered the not-calzone, I think they call it an Italian sandwich? Whatever it's called, it was awesome. The rest of our party had the BYO omelette, turkey sandwich, and breakfast plate, all of them fire. Especially the turkey sammy. It comes with this balsamic (?) spread that adds great flavor and cuts through the richness of the mayo and bacon. Came here today for lunch for the 3rd or 4th time and I have to say this is still my favorite place to go for business lunches. The menu has all of your great lunch choices from personal pizzas, pasta, salads, soups, etc... they also have a "Business Lunch" where you choose up to 3 items. The food here is delicious and very nice and bright and colorful. I definitely highly recommend Provisional for Breakfast or Lunch. Oh man. This review is WAY LONG OVERDUE! We were there for Comic Con in July and stopped by not knowing anything about this place. We had such an amazing meal the first day that we ended up having two more meals there the second day! We were able to have breakfast, lunch, AND dinner there. The food was exceptional and the service was even better! Our little guy was dressed as Shang-Chi and Dr. Strange and he had a MARVEL-ous time.
