Came here with a friend for the Whole Pig Feast event and it was my very first time trying Guamanian food. My friend told me that she loved Guamanian food and this was one of the only places in the bay that survived the pandemic. I'm glad that it did because the food was absolutely amazing, but first lets start with getting there. Prebuchu is located at Mission St in SF, which you can already tell is probably an absolute nightmare when it came to parking. On Sunday, on a super nice day, it definitely was, but we were eventually able to find parking that was about 5 minutes away from the event. Otherwise, I'd recommend just taking transit or an uber over there to save the headache. The location itself is pretty neat, there an interior part of the restaurant (which was essentially closed off), and an exterior on the right side after entering (which is where the event was being held). The event was pretty well organized (in terms of seating), which plenty of seating for all the guests that reserved. The vibe was pretty great in there, they had someone come in to play music and he definitely set the tone. The service itself was pretty mixed to be honest, which brings me to why I'm taking a star away. The food came out really randomly, some way sooner than others. Me and my friend arrived there at 1:00 PM, which is when the event started, but they probably took about an hour and a half for all of our food to come through. I even saw some people getting served their full course before we did and they came in after us. Even though they are doing their best, the event was just super unorganized. The food itself though was absolutely amazing. Now, I've never had Guamanian food before, but every entree they took out was absolute fuego. The Chamorro Empanada and they had this hot sauce that had some coconut milk and a bunch of different chili in there that tasted amazing. Loved adding it to the Hotnon Babui giving it a little bit of a spicy flavor. the Golal Hagon Suni was amazing too. It had kind of like this coconut aftertaste that was really good. All in all, the food made the wait definitely worth it. I really wish I could give this place 5 stars, but I had to dock it one star just because the service was so inconsistent. Prubechu is the first time I have had Guamanian food and I'm happy I tried it. Overall the food is pretty good, though the prices are probably just a tad too high for the portions. I do know that operating in SF is expensive but even with that $17 for 5 wings and so on is a bit much. I enjoyed their vegetables more than the meat overall and I'd come back (or order take out) but would order more of the veggies. Stuff tried: - Ko'ko wings: their version of fried chicken. The schezuan pepper adds a bit of numbing spice. Overall this was enjoyable but the price seemed a bit too high for what you get - Appan mendioka (cassava in coconut milk): I really enjoyed this, especially with their hot sauce (which you need to order separately). This is a bit sweet due to the coconut and was a nice contrast to the other dishes. It's also vegan. - Brisket: I was a bit disappointed by this. It wasn't bad by any means but it didn't have as much flavor as I'd hoped and I've definitely had tastier brisket - Sweet and sour pork belly: the pork belly was okay but the highlight of this was the different veggies (bell pepper, cabbage, shishito peppers) with the sweet and tangy sauce and pieces of pineapple. The contrast of flavors and textures was nice. The pork belly was fine, not amazing and if they offered this dish with just the veggies I'd probably opt for that - Red rice: I didn't find this particularly flavorful and unless you really want rice with your meal, I'd get a different side They are pretty good for those with dietary restrictions (good amount of veggie and vegan options and also a lot of things can be made gluten free). Overall, the food is good but not as amazing as I'd hoped. It's probably around 3 and a half stars for me; I round down mostly because the value could be better. read more

Yummy! Why have all my Chamorro friends been holding back on me?? Location wise- this restaurant is very easy to miss and parking sooks (but you already knew that about the Mission). I liked the chill vibes. We sat outside on picnic tables surrounded by the sounds of good reggae music. Koko wings Chicken Kelaguen BBQ pork ribs Tinaktak Red rice All the food was really delicious and so full of flavor. My only qualm is how pricey the food is for the portions. Maybe the fiesta table would have been more worth it than a la carte? Overall, still a great meal with great food and friendly service. We felt like family! read more

That's a whole value family pack size at Safeway uncooked. I'm just saying... for 5 pieces, it was on the expensive side. It was good. Definitely tasty. The sticker shock! 3. Chicken Kelaguen: $14.40. Came in a small bowl. Super tasty and delicious. Poured all my black finadenee on it and ate it with the red rice. Totally recommend. 4. BBQ Chicken Skewers: $21.11 for three appetizer sized sticks of chicken. Well marinated and tasty. 5. BBQ Brisket: $24.81 it was ok. Not very flavorful at all. 6. Black Finadenne sauce: $2.06.. you'd think the sauce would be free. Our meal here cost more than Brenda's French Soul food. They have a fixed price menu but we just tried a variety of a la carte items. We had the gilf shrimp kelagun and tityas as well as the chicken kelagun. I was a little surprised that the kelagun was cold, so just be aware of that. We also had the red rice, which was flavorful. My favorite was the tinaktak- lovely noodles bathed in a coconut sauce. Not a place to go for a leisurely meal. Went with a party of 6 friends and spent about $150 person ($900). Our conversation was interrupted by the waiter right after paying the bill to tell us that we had five minutes more at the table and then would need to leave. We had been there just under 2 hours. Came to SFO to visit our beautiful family and our foodie nice wanted to surprise us with great different food! What an awesome experience!!! I was clueless about food from Guam. It was different, delicious and fantastic. The place is rather eclectic and fun, very casual, great music and service. I loved the food!!!! We did share "tapas style"... The eggplant was probably the best followed by the noodles with beef and mushrooms (Tianktak), the chicken wings were also delicious, kind of special and different... everything we tried were delicious... Eating at Prubechu was my first time eating Guamanian food and it was pretty delicious! Pretty much everything we ordered was good but my favorites were the Ko'ko' wings, the spicy hot tamale gisu with fried egg, and the chicken tinaktak! The red rice was super good too. I'm just in general not a big mayo/cream person so the chicken kelaguen was a little too mayo/creamy for me, same with the golai hagon suni (creamed spinach) and the appan mendioka (cassava in coconut milk) but really the flavors were all good and it's not like I wouldn't eat it again! Prices are all on the higher side so probably better to share with 3-4 people in the group if you want to try more dishes at once but still be okay with the portion sizes. Checked this place out after wanting to try it for a long time. We didn't have a reservation and were able to walk in on a Friday night. We got a table inside but also have a patio outside. It's cozy inside and good vibes. Everyone was really kind and helpful with suggestions on the menu. We tried a couple cocktails that were delicious and well balanced. The food was so good. We started with the eggplant and sweet rolls for apps. The rolls were amazing and addictive. They were warm, fluffy, a bit sweet, and butter was great with it. I didn't love the eggplant but flavor was pretty good. Some parts didn't seem cooked as well and were pretty hard. The empanada and koko wings were favorites as well. The empanada was good sized and loved how crisp it was on the outside with all the cheese on top. The koko wings were also crispy, not greasy or oily, and great flavor. The BBQ ribs were so tender and flavor was great. The tinaktak was a bit different and liked it but wish it was slightly less creamy. We definitely ate everything and left super full. I've never had Guamanian food prior to visiting Prubechu so I didn't have any expectations or point of reference, but I left with an impeccable experience! The flavors were all so unique yet comforting, I would absolutely be back. Especially for the Ko Ko Wings. It was my first bite and it blew me away. They were some of the crispiest and most seasoned fried chicken wings I've ever had, and comes with a tangy lemon sauce. Surprisingly, the other item that I enjoyed the most was the Red Rice we ordered as a side. It's very fragrant and goes well with savory dishes, such as the BBQ Pork Ribs. From the dishes I've ordered, it seems like most dishes have sour and tangy or coconut flavors to them, like the Gulf Shrimp Kelaguen & Coconut Titiyas and the Tinaktak. My recent visit to Prubechu, the Guamanian fusion restaurant, left me with mixed feelings. We only got two items,the Ko'Ko Wings and the Crispy Sweet & Sour Pork belly. The wings were definitely one of the best wings you can find in San Francisco. I looove Chamorro food, and I never knew until I tried Prubechu! I briefly dated a part Guamanian guy who ate lemons with soy sauce for a snack. That was my only impression of Guamanian food until now. Now, I'm getting some vibes of Filipino and Spanish mixed with super deliciousness. There's vinegar, lemon, and soy flavor profiles mixed throughout most of the food - some intense mixes, but integrated quite well! So, I've always had this place bookmarked before COVID-19 but never found an opportunity to go, partially because I had no idea what I would have even ordered as the menu was so foreign to me. It seems their menu was simplified to fare better as takeout food now, although they are transitioning to serving food in their outdoor patio, and have hosted a couple of enticing food events. - BBQ Chicken Fiesta Like a full meal with various sides and sauce. The fiestas come with red rice, chicken kelaguen, kimchi pickle, and fina'denne'. First, that rice! I haven't had this kind of flavored rice before, but it's deliciously tangy and peppery with achote! The chicken kelaguen, called a "ceviche", is made with chicken grilled over live fire, and marinated in lemon with coconut and scallion. It tastes like lightly acidic shredded chicken. The kimchi had a thick, crisp bite, and was mostly vinegary. Fina'denne' is essentially finely chopped onions with soy sauce and vinegar, and theirs was quite tart! The food was already flavorful without it, but it did allow for some more sour bites! The BBQ chicken itself was a little hard and could be more tender, though it had a good sweet soy flavor. - A la carte BBQ Pork Ribs Very good ribs in a smoky Asian flavor with nice char and good fat amount, though the portion is small for the price. I'd choose this meat over the chicken. Comes with fina'denne'! - Beef & Potato Empanada Guamanian empanadas?! This was so tasty, because it has a light, crisp skin, and it's almost like a gigantic fried wonton. The meat inside was very beefy in a moist mixture. This is garnished with arugula, fresh parmesan shavings, and comes with some creamy aioli. - Chamorro Sweet Roll & Tuba Butter A lot smaller than you'd think, but pretty worth it - really good bread. Soft, fluffy, milky dinner rolls that give way to any pressure... They're like King's Hawaiian bread, but elevated. The butter whip is amazing as well, flavored with hints of coconut, vinegar, and sea salt. If you've never had this type of cuisine, it's definitely worth a try. They seated us outside on the coldest night everrrr, we were freezing but the heaters made it better. You know what made it even better though? Some menu items I ordered didn't quite land (do not recommend the Appan Mendioka for those who have never had it) but other items on the menu certainly captured my interest enough for a return visit. Food - 7/10 - I went with the servers recommendation and got the BBQ ribs as well as Appan Mendioka. Ribs - 7/10 - pretty good. Wasn't falling off the bone but certainly very flavorful and the presentation was impressive. Im not a huge rib guy so I can't evaluate ribs that well. It tasted good but at $22 I expect to have a magical umami experience. This was not the case. If you like ribs and don't have another spot to try in the mission I'd say that this might be a new favorite. Judge for yourself. Appan Mendioka - 3/10 - hear me out. This is some kind of vegitable or plant that I've never had before. It was exotic and exciting. The sauce reminded me of the sweet sauce found on sticky mango rice at Asian venues and was good. However I found the plant itself to be very flavorless and a strange texture. I simply think that no matter how the plant was prepared I would not like it. I am a bit confused why they would recommend this as a top dish- it seems like many would not like this unless it was a known food to them. If you are avoiding meat then perhaps give it a go, otherwise I would avoid the $7 price tag and get something else. Service - 8/10 - server was great. A bit too many questions towards the end of my meal but his heart is in the right place. My food came pretty quickly. Ambiance - 7/10 - great backyard vibes with lots of plants and open air. There is a covered outdoor area as well. Points lost for a car parked in the middle of the back lot and an extremely exposed fancy bathroom trailer thing. There's no way to go wrong with any of the dishes or drinks offered here, and the service is so warm and kind. They are clearly so excited to tell you more about the cuisine and it makes it so much more enjoyable to eat food from people who love to make it. My best outdoor dining experience yet! Not only did I feel very safe dining here, but the Chamorro food was amazing! Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the shaved summer squash dish. The crunchy chili garlic sauce was sooooo delicious and perfectly balanced the dish -- I scraped it all off the plate! I also recommend the Chamorro sweet roll. As for outdoor dining, I was super impressed by their safety precautions for outdoor dining. Upon arrival you'll be asked to fill out a Covid survey on your phone. Everyone gets their temperature checked before entering (temperature gun, so no contact). All of the tables have hand sanitizer spray. Once you're seated, you order everything through your phone for minimal contact. The tables are generously spaced and have sun umbrellas to keep you cool. Very well done! read more

This place has been on my list for a while & I can't believe it took us so long to try them out because they are one of the greatest hidden gems on Mission St hand down! Even though they have a great variety of seating as well as a bar inside, my family & I dined outside under their heated tent & it was such a welcoming experience. It honestly felt like we were at a family bbq with a mix of some upscale pacific rim cuisine on the menu. We started with the beef & potato empanada & butternut squash soup. Both were out of this world & exploding with flavor! The empanada was honestly like nothing I've ever had before & I wish I had ordered two, it was that good. Then we enjoyed their sweet rolls & butter, another mind blowing dish. The bread was so warm & soft & the vinegar butter complimented it very well. Our main course was their bbq brisket along with red rice. The brisket was flavor bombed & cooked to perfection & the rice was just the right complement. We ended our experience with homemade coconut ice cream & cones. I honestly would come here just for the dessert! 3 - 3.4 Stars. Firstly, I like this place because I have never had Chamorro food before and it's pretty cool we have this in San Francisco. Secondly, they take their safety precautions very seriously here. No mask, no service. Also, in order to be let in to the outdoor parking turned dining area, they also took my temperature. Everyone wore masks and gloves. I pre-ordered from tock and arrived 15 minutes earlier than pickup time, so while waiting in the outdoor dining area, I also got myself a cup of the calamansi sake mimosa drink. Looks pretty but it's just okay, kind of watered down and I can't really taste the calamansi flavor. Too much ice maybe? I hardly drink, but when I do (seems to be doing more of it lately), I need a little stiffer drink if you know what I mean. I ordered the BBQ brisket and the BBQ chicken. Both came with red rice, chicken kelaguen, kimchi pickles, and fina'denne. The BBQ brisket was pretty tasty. Hubby thought it was a little dry but tender. I thought it tasted great the way it is. We both agreed that the BBQ chicken was very, very, very salty. I think they used way too much soy sauce marinate because it was way too STRONG and you know how when you oversalt something, you taste the food, and it's a little bitter as well, yeah, like that. Not very pleasant. Hubby spit it out after just one bite. I ate a few more bites before I gave it up. We had different upbringing, but even I can't handle this much salt. Since they are using chicken thigh (dark) meat, they don't really need to be so heavy handed, it's way too overpowering. I really hope this is not the way they normally cook their chicken. Though he was not a fan of the over-salt BBQ chicken, he was fixated on the red rice and the chicken kelaguan. So I let him finish my portion, too. He thought it tasted great. He was curious on why the rice is red, and proudly informed me after a quick google search that it's red because they add achote seeds to get the orange/red coloring. According to Wiki, "Kelaguen is a Chamorro dish from the Mariana Islands eaten as a side or main dish. It is similar to ceviche, a pickling marinade of lemon juice, fresh coconut, green onions, salt and spicy hot peppers or donni' is used to marinate cooked chicken, raw shrimp, fish or beef meat/liver." It is also said that "Kelaguen is derived from the Filipino kilawin. It was introduced by Filipino settlers when the Marianas and the Philippines were both part of the Spanish East Indies." Personally, I found the kimchi pickles really delicious (still very salty) and paired well with the rice, and the yummy brisket. Hubby generously let me have all the kimchi after initial taste. I also like the Fina'denne' sauce (use sparingly as it's again very salty) which he thought was also too overpowering. It's a soy sauce, vinegar dip that has white onions (or shallots) chopped into it. Came here for a friend's birthday! For large parties (ours was 12), they'll create a pre fixe menu. We were seated outside and a large table with a colorful tablecloth, and the ambiance is really nice. At night, they turn on the heaters which is a great touch, and it's not chilly at all. I had the: - Brentwood Corn Soup (7/10): Interesting, but overall good - BBQ Pork Ribs (8/10): Good ribs, pretty tender. Came with rice and sauces. You can also ask for spicy sauces on demand, and they will bring it! - Rice Dessert (8/10): Good, but definitely not a sweet dessert For drinks, I ordered the Spritz. I've been the this restaurant about 5 times now. Upon writing this review I'm realizing I am due for another visit. I love the outdoor patio of this restaurant. They have bathrooms outside which is convenient as well. As a plant lover, this place has all the best plants surrounding the tables as you eat. The bread rolls- a must order. Soft w/ a nicely brushed sweet glaze top. Accompanied with butter. Perfect. I need 2 orders. The wedge salad- I love their wasabi dressing! Although the last time I went it was a bit overdressed for me, I still very much enjoyed it. So refreshing and such a great starter. The wings- I don't know what they put in that sour white sauce but I am in love with it. The wings are a must order. Also ask for a side of hot sauce. They even have bottled you can purchase for the house. The batter is perfectly crisp on the wings. Ribs- I'm not one to usually order ribs @ a restaurant but these were yummy flavorful fall off the bone. Lastly the whole fish- it's a whole fried fish, what else can I say. read more

The food just kept getting better and better as it all came out. The pork belly was so tender and went well with the crispy skin and cabbage and pineapple. The pork ribs were so well marinated, the empanadas were so flavorful. Everything was amazing. read more

I love trying new cuisines and new foods. The food on the menu at Prubechu was exciting and different. I came in a larger group, which meant we could share and try different dishes. That was perfect since not every dish was to my personal taste. My favorite dishes of the night : shrimp and grits, tinaktak, koko wings, empanada. Other dishes I enjoyed were from the bbq section. We had the chicken, ribs and brisket. And generally as a group, we were underwhelmed by the chamorro sweet rolls, an eggplant dish, creamed spinach, the dishes with coconut titiyas, and the whole branzino. The outdoor seating was very comfortable and the service was wonderful. Like others have said, it feels a little pricy for the amount of food you get. And for my tastebuds, the food was a hit or miss, but I thoroughly enjoyed trying this cuisine. read more

I've had Prubechu bookmarked for years so when my friend suggested we go, who am I to object? The space itself is very cute, they have an indoor section that no one was using because their outdoor section was so spacious. They had a giant canopy for a shaded section, and a few non shaded tables, all with heat lamps throughout. For food, we started with the Chamorro sweet rolls with tuba butter. Light and fluffy, great flavor and perfect starter. From there we got the Iceberg wedge with wasabi ranch. The wasabi ranch really made it. I could have this every day. Normally I don't care for iceberg lettuce salads or ranch dressing but it was so good. We ate it all so fast. For the rest of the mains we got: The spicy tamales with fried egg. I didn't have any of this as I was saving room for the pork ribs lol. Let me tell you, these were fall off the bone bbq pork ribs. They were so good, only messy. Wished they came with a wet wipe. The Tinaktak was like the Guam version of Russia's stroganoff... trust me it's pure comfort food. We ate it all up. For sides, we got the sweet potato with creamed spinach with sautéed greens- I only had the creamed spinach cuz I'm obsessed and it didn't let me down, the egg salad which I generally just don't care for in general so it was just meh to me, and the red rice, which was yummy. As for dessert, we had to try the banana donuts, basically fried bananas with cream. Man these things went fast even with all the food we ordered. Overall, I will definitely be back.
