Malatang has become so popular in SD, especially around Convoy, and I've noticed several new spots opening up in just the past couple of years. We tried the Malatang with the classic bone broth and tom yum broth. Both were alright - the broths were lighter and not as heavy or rich as some other Malatang places. It's a good option if you prefer something less oily and more on the lighter side. Their fried desserts - the Coconut Lava Balls and Brown Sugar Glutinous Rice Cakes - were pretty good. They had just the right amount of sweetness and weren't overly sweet, making them a nice way to end the meal. Even though they now offer Malatang, their Chinese-style fish soups are still worth checking out. Their menu originally centered around dishes like suancai fish, a popular Chinese comfort food that's relatively new to the SD food scene. When I first saw that Yonny Mini Hot Pot's sign replaced Fish With You, I was so sad because I thought FWY was gone. So glad to see that they still have the FWY menu available! Since I'm not the biggest spice fan, I usually order the Tangy Lemon Fish and the Royal Tomato Fish. If you like spice, then I recommend the Signature and the Laotan Suancai and Fish - both have a nice numbing mala spice to them. Perfect combination of salty, sour, and spicy flavors. For each bowl, you start by picking whether you want the base to be snakehead or basa fish. You then select 4 sides from a list (I highly recommend the vermicelli). Additional sides cost extra. For a small sized bowl, 1 bowl of rice is included. For a large sized bowl, 2 bowls of rice are included. The large size is enough to feed 2 people. This has been my hyper fixation meal for the last few weeks! Have literally gotten take out and delivered 4 times in the last month. It's mainly driven by the kuan fen (I think that's what the noodles are called) in the signature suan cai. The noodles are made with sweet potato starch, and are this insanely chewy and satisfying texture that I haven't tried or found elsewhere. The sourness from the suan cai is pretty unique and addicting. The portion of even the small/regular is a lot, and with rice I usually cannot finish in one meal. Ordering is a bit confusing, it's hard to tell what comes with something of a combo. I've tried the crispy pork on the side, and it was fun how the batter had sichuan peppercorns in it! I was a little worried when we arrived at 6 PM on a Saturday night and the place was almost empty. But never fear, Fish With You lives up to the hype! Since we had never been before, my man and I decided to err on the side of caution as far as spice goes. We started out with the crispy squid, which came out almost immediately. Hot and delicious with just a little bit of ice spicy salt on the side. For the main course I had the lemon Basa soup and my man had the crispy chicken tomato soup. Both were advertised as not being spicy and both were absolutely fantastic. I could seriously eat that lemon soup every day! For my add-ins, I went for Inoki mushrooms and cabbage, and got a side of noodles. They also put a generous amount of tofu in the soup. It was light, tangy, refreshing, and completely satisfying. I could only eat about half of it so I took the other half home for lunch for the next day. My man's crispy chicken soup was awesome too. It had a deliciously decadent tomato soup base, a ton of fried chicken strips, and also came with a generous amount of tofu. He got rice with his, but he was jealous of my noodles. The ambience inside is kind of stark but it's clean and neat. Within 20 minutes of us getting there the whole restaurant was full so we hit it at the sweet spot on a Saturday night! Ever since they opened, I've been really excited to try Fish With You. Szechuan suan cai yu soup is such a comforting meal, especially in colder weather, and I love that a restaurant specializing in this dish has opened in Convoy. I stopped by recently and was really impressed with the food. There was no wait on a Saturday afternoon and we were quickly seated. We had to scan a QR code for the menu and to place our food orders so service interaction is minimal. I love QR menus but it did make it slightly harder for the elderly people in our group to navigate and read the menu. We ordered crispy pork as an appetizer and several variations of their fish soups, all in small size, as our individual entrees. Fried pork was good but not really memorable. The real star of the show were the fish soups. We were shocked with how large the portions were. A small portion is definitely enough for one person, or even two to share, and a large portion should definitely be shared between 2-4 people. The fish was very tender and the broth was really flavorful and had the perfect balance of spicy and sour. Parking is a bit hard to find with the busy plazas but we parked in a nearby plaza and walked over. As I mentioned, service is minimal but they are friendly enough. They satisfied the savory part but neither the wallet nor the chewy part. The jellies with popping boba though offered at the beginning were saved until the end - the perfect dessert. They have a lot of different types of flavors to pick from with various spice levels and you get to pick from a few options what veggies/toppings to get with the fish. Rice is included with the fish dishes. We also got the crispy pork on the side which was well fried and helped take the edge off of the spice. It was really busy when we went, all the tables were full but we didn't have to wait long for one. Very efficient service here. If the fish soups weren't soooo spicy I would give this 6 stars. I could only handle so much and asked repeatedly to have them not put in any hot peppers or chili's but they said they couldn't accommodate me.
