Seriously one of the best restaurants I've eaten at, EVER. In my life! As a lifelong vegetarian, it was overwhelming to look at a menu and be able to order literally anything I wanted. I was also happy to see that, on top of that, there are lots of gluten free options--it can be kinda hard to find vegetarian AND gf at a restaurant, so that's a big bonus! I was with a group, so we tried a lot of different menu items, and everything we ordered was, like, the best thing we'd ever eaten. I dream of the soul rolls! And wouldn't be right not to order sweet tea. Andrew and his staff treated our table like we were royalty, so not only was the food incredible, we had an amazing experience, too. You can really tell the love and care that has been put into curating such an authentic, cool spot. Impeccable vibes.

I had the NC BBQ plate. Loved the cornbread and coleslaw. I wasn't a big fan of the collard greens...they tasted too chili-powder forward for me, and I thought the bbq and mac and cheese were just okay. While the food wasn't particularly my favorite, I loved how the menu had such variety. The cashier was super nice, and the service was great.

Stopped here on our way back from Greensboro, best travel break ever!!!! I had Soul Roll, which was an Eggrolls that consisted of greens, vegan chicken, and mac n cheese. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS, HANDS DOWN!!!!

Really enjoyed my visit to Pure Soul. It was my first time though I've heard a lot about it. As far as I understand, everything here is vegan. Which is awesome. It's in a small strip mall in Durham and has a small parking lot. When we went it was 1pm on a Thursday and there were a bunch of people. Between getting through the line and waiting for our food, it took about 30 minutes, so keep this in mind should you visit at a high traffic time. The space itself is funky and casual. They deliver your food in biodegradable to go containers. I had the fried CHKN sandwich and added buffalo sauce and ranch with a side of french fries. Everything was very good. The taste and consistency felt like chicken but not as heavy as a fried chicken sandwich would be, which is great! I really enjoyed my experience and I would recommend if you're looking for a good vegan place in the Triangle.

One of the best vegan restaurants I've tried. The fish fry sandwich was great as well as the Caesar side salad. I could taste the love and care this food was made with. There's vegan-friendly food served in most restaurants as an afterthought, but at Pure Soul, plants are center-stage. My nonvegan wife loved the "shrimp" po boy and Caesar salad as well. The lemonade was delicious and refreshing. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

One of my absolute favorite places to visit! The food is DELICIOUS! There are more than enough options and I love that no matter when I visit, there MAY be entertainment or great vendors or just a welcoming environment with friendly faces. The desserts are not my fav but almost any and everything else on the menu HITS. The Mac n and cheese, along with the soul rolls are a must try.

Honestly loved this place so much. The cornbread was AMAZING and I will be going back just for that. For being a no meat establishment, this place is honestly impressive. Everything was very good and tastes like the real deal. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the BBQ chicken was a bit difficult to eat after the first 4 or 5 bites. It's very rich and strong and I had trouble finishing it. But that also speaks to how much quantity they give you. Overall, solid place with nice vibes and good service.

God tier vegan comfort food! My husband and I split a NC BBQ plate and some fried chicken strips and it was still way more than enough for the two of us! Everything was hot and super fresh, it only took a few minutes to get and the lady at the counter was so nice. We can't wait to come back again when we're in the area next!

I REALLY enjoyed this place. We parked on the side of the barbershop and oh man....the ambiance from the minute we stepped into this space was on point. Live plants, chill music and courteous staff created an excellent experience. My husband had the NC bbq sandwich and I had the bbq plate with kale salad, mac n cheese, and cornbread. Everything was great! My husband said he could taste the difference with real meat vs vegan, but I couldn't. I also consider myself a macaroni and cheese connoisseur and I really enjoyed the vegan mac. We are excited to go back!

If I lived in Durham I would eat here once a week. This place is restorative to your soul. The food is so delicious, they play soul music, and you can eat outdoors surrounded by greenery and color. It's a vibe for sure. I came here twice in a row on a holiday weekend and loved both of the meals I had, the Soul Bowl and a 3 side plate with cornbread, vegan mac and cheese, and collards. They have both vegan and plant based entrees. Whatever you do, get the cornbread.

I kinda love this place. A lot. Thankfully, I live quite far away and so I cannot go totally broke eating here every day. But a trip to Pure Soul is often how I reward myself for being a good boy. Heh. As I have said in other reviews, I'm a plain old lacto-ovo-vegetarian -- not a vegan. However there really is no such thing as a "vegetarian restaurant"... except vegan joints. I find them exceedingly comforting, even though I don't require the full vegan Monty. What's more, I LUUUV vegan places that put in the extreme effort necessary to tickle the fancy of customers, like me, who have given up meat but miss the comfort provided by the dishes we grew up eating. To that end, Pure Soul SCORES THE POINTS. The NC BBQ plate with slaw and 2 sides is where you should start (I recommend the mac&cheese. The potato salad is also a straight up classic. You can't miss, though, no matter which sides you choose.) Like the BBQ, the "fried chicken" is good either as part of a similar "plate" or as a sandwich. All the "sandwiches", in fact, are terrific, whether BBQ, chicken, burgers, etc. They are served with nice homemade pickles and can be had with dynamite fries (with or without vegan "cheese"). Also, I've yet to meet a staff member who wasn't exceptionally helpful and pleasant. What more could you want? Oh, like many restaurants in these pandemic-adjacent times, just be sure to check the hours of business before heading out. Enjoy! read more

Here me out, I'm from the south and I love some southern style food but when I friend mentioned vegan style soul food I could've called blasphemy. But I went along with and boy was I in for a surprise. BBQ plate was delicious and had a kick to it too!!! I usually don't do spicy but it was enjoyable. We have been coming here for years. The food is always the best and you don't have to worry about it being vegan. The service is the best and the staff gets to know you. I can't say enough about how much we love this gem of a restaurant. We live about 40 minutes away but come to Durham for Dr. appointments and always stop in at Pure Soul. I have been to this restaurant several times over the course of two years and I have had tried many of their dishes. This is my first review because I like to take time to review restaurants that consistently deliver great food! Let me just say that this restaurant never disappoints! The food is amazing whether you are vegan or curious to see what food tastes like that is completely plant based. From the moment you enter the restaurant you are greeted with a welcome and the staff are very helpful with answering any questions that you may have, taking the time to make sure you enjoy your experience. The restaurant is not huge but very inviting with a decor that is simple yet warm with plants around the entry, cute print table cloths and natural lighting. Today I choice the fish plate with greens and coleslaw. I also added a side of cornbread because I can't come here and not get some! Thank you Pure Soul for another great dinning experience! I rarely ever leave reviews but had to for Pure Soul. The food was 10/10, and service was fantastic!! i'm not exaggerating at all when I say everything was above and beyond. We got the NC plate and the Chicago burger - both super tasty and great portion sizes. My favorite side was hands down the mac and cheese, and the vegan cheesecake was also amazing!! We're big foodies, and this place is now on my shortlist for places to revisit often. read more

I wish I could give a higher rating. I loved the menu--the fried "fish" was so good as were the other sides. Unfortunately for my daughter and me, there was just too much salt in every dish. (Darn low sodium diet). I know it is soul food but I wish all the sodium in the dishes could be cut in half. Loved the yellow rice (which we could eat) and still want to go back and try the three-side sampler with a recommendation on the best choices for my diet. Nice place. Well worth the visit. read more

The pulled pork sandwich made me look twice to ensure I was not consuming pig. The sweet potato pie was just the right amount of sweet without overpowering the potato. And speaking of sweet potatoes - the fries the fries the FRIES!! Just go get you some of the pure Yumminess and you'll understand my positive review. Great job folks! This is the place of my dreams. I had the NC BBQ & slaw plate with Mac and potato salad. My tastebuds died of joy and went straight to heaven. Where they rejoiced momentarily with all the animals that passed from natural causes and not by food murder. My party (with my brother and husband, it's always a party) arrived very close to the ordering cutoff and were informed there was no cornbread. We all cried real tears but quickly recovered from our deep sadness upon tasting all our other delicious foods. The staff was extremely excellent and surprised us with fresh baked cornbread, no charge, right before closing! Who does that, instead of sweeping you out with the compostable trash?! Only the best people! My tastebuds again died of joy. My heart joined from overflowing happiness. I quickly returned to living so that I can eat here again next time I'm in NC. Just... wow! I was craving an impossible burger and I got exactly what I wanted. But that doesn't sum up everything that I loved about this restaurant. The ambiance (comfy and unique decor) the great customer service (everyone we interacted with was so kind) the A+ presentation (we're just talking about a burger but it was so neatly arranged) the little extras (they brought over a sauce for us to try with our fries that we didn't order). As an added bonus, the tomato and lettuce on the side? Perfect and fresh. That's how you earn those extra bonus points from a customer, putting extra effort into the little things that are overlooked by many other places. Pure soul is exactly that; Pure. Soul. This is southern comfort food that really satisfies and the fact that it's ALL VEGAN is just incredible. For all my vegan people this is the place to bring your veg curious family and friends and introduce them to what we have known for a long time: you do not have to sacrifice taste to be vegan. I have been coming here for years and the menu is solid. The BBQ plate is still my favorite but all the items I have tried are great. The staff are genuinely friendly and compassionate and really represent the mission. The vibe is relaxed and I love that I see all types of folks come here. For those that have never been the spot is kinda tucked away at the end of a strip mall off an access road running parallel to Durham-Chapel hill blvd. Your GPS may get confused but don't get discouraged it is there! You can't miss if you give this place a try! read more

Wow! Perfect portions, spot on flavors, friendly and attentive service, chill vibes when it comes to ambiance. Strong recommendation from me. I tried the fish sandwich and it was perfect. Talk about hidden gem... this restaurant is a vegan's paradise. The ambiance transports you to a warmer weather location, on an island, maybe. The food is guilt-free, delicious, flavorful. Absolutely recommend their Chkn Plate and hiiiighly recommend their Kale Caesar salad. It's beyond comprehension how anyone could make kale taste THAT good. Looking for something different to explore on a Easy Sunday. Enter Pure Soul!! Pure Soul is a plant based culinary delight that aims to feed your Soul, with the good stuff. I ordered the BBQ Chicken and it was a plentiful portion. My boyfriend had the Fried Chicken sandwich and both were good. Also had the soul Mac and cheese and collards. Everything had great flavor and filled my appetite. I can't lie, I'm not vegan or vegetarian so my taste buds are longing for some smoked meats, real meat, real cheese. But I truly enjoyed this spot nonetheless. Having said that, the vibe was great, Dj played some great tunes and this was an enjoyable afternoon trek. Pure Soul started by traveling NC to food festivals and charity events to spread the word about kind comfort food and to test their concept. Pure Soul boasts a diverse team and ownership, with one mission. Bring vegan soul food to Durham, NC and create a kinder future!

Meet the Business Owner: Nikolas S and Andrew J.

Nikolas Spaulding, founder & head chef, loves to create an atmosphere and space where people feel at ease. He got his start at a young age, having to become inventive at a time when there were very few vegan restaurants. Most of the recipes used at Pure Soul are family recipes, altered to be plant-based. Nik most enjoys working a recipe until it tastes just right and seeing people's faces when they try his food. Andrew Justad, co-founder and idea guy, initially went vegan to realize his health goals. As his vegan journey continued, it really stuck as he learned more about the cruel and unsustainable animal-farming practices that are the norm in today's food chain. Andrew's passion for serving his community makes him a great co-founder--he loves collaborating with local artists, musicians, chefs, and fellow vegans to host kind community events.

The food I ordered was slightly wrong (breasts instead of thighs), but the person behind the counter fixed it without complaint and even threw in another piece. The porter keeps the room clean and the napkins and utensils in order. It's just a great place to sit and have a meal. And the food is hot and cooked perfectly - just like granny!!

During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

Some of the best food I've had! I had the soul rolls and fried fish sandwich and they were amazing. It's really hard to find good vegan fish but they do it right here! read more
