I tried QDoba Mexican Eats for the first time today on my lunch break - it was awesome! I honestly think it's better than Chipotle (cheaper too), it's a similar menu and layout though. You can get free queso and free guacamole on your bowls or salads (unlike chipotle). I tried the create your own bowl with shrimp as my protein - delicious. The portions are generous as well. The staff is very friendly and quick even during the lunch rush of a downtown Chicago Loop weekday. There is plenty of seating available inside the restaurant as well. I'm also happy they still separate the tables so they're not crammed together--is it because of the Pandemic, or is it because they know we don't want to sit on top of each other while trying to enjoy a meal. So the flavor of the meat is pretty good here, however, they pack so much meat inside the tacos that the dang tortilla won't even fold over it and I can't eat the dang taco the way I want to. I needed a fork. If I wanted a burrito bowl I would have ordered one. Ok rant over. My favorite here is the drunken Yardbird taco. It's chicken flavored with tequila lime, cheese, cilantro and it's really tasty. I also tried The Gladiator, which is the steak taco version, but I didn't care for that one too much. The steak comes cubed, and again, way too much meat for my liking and not enough veggies. The chips are a hit or miss. Sometimes they are nicely flavored with a hint of lime salt, sometimes not. But they give you so much chips in the bag that you almost want to order it all the time if you're a tortilla chip addict like I am. Good place for lunch in the loop if you're craving Mexican. This Qdoba is very close to my work, so I find myself here often. And each time, I think "why did I bother with this place?" Don't get me wrong, I'm a qdoba fan in general, but I despise their rewards system and the employees at this location are apathetic at best and downright mean at worse. I generally order through the app as to avoid the ire of jaded employees, but even scheduling pickup after 1:30 PM, I still get the eye for daring to come in at all. I've been to this location over 25 times in the last year (to get to the "champ" rewards level- spoiler alert...not even remotely worth it) and it is consistently a crappy experience. On top of that, prices have gone up twice in a year and they seem to be inconsistent on their menu items. Are mini burritos gone? It's still on the menu board but they won't make them. So, goodbye Qdoba. I will no longer feel bad about daring to order lunch from this location. read more

We stopped into Qdoba for lunch and had a satisfactory experience. I'll preface this by saying that I'm really not the biggest fan of Qdoba to begin with. However, I'm always willing to give places a second (or third) chance. This particular location I have not been to in nearly a decade but not much has changed. They have ample seating and it never seems to get too busy during the lunch rush. In the interest of fairness I decided I would try something I'd never had before: I went with a burrito bowl. Aside from thinking that the serving size was a bit on the small side I will admit that it was pretty tasty. The proportions of the toppings to each other complimented nicely and there wasn't any one thing that overpowered everything else. We also had a bowl of nachos which was executed very well too. The one speed bump was the pop machine. When we went up to it there was nearly 75-80% of the options listed as "unavailable". Disappointing. After swapping the drink for a bottle of Fanta we began to enjoy our food. Not a minute passed that a Qdoba employee approached the pop machine (we were sitting very near to it) and apparently reset it - everything was now working just fine! Disappointed (we really wanted the fountain drink and not a bottle of Fanta) we didn't let it ruin our meal or day. It seems someone simply forgot to reset it after restocking the machine. I'm not going to say that I've completely turned a corner on Qdoba and will be adding it back into my normal rotation. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the food during my visit. If you have a craving then this is the place to satisfy it. If you've never been, or it's been a while (like me), give this location a shot. You should leave with a smile on your fact. read more

5 stars when compared to other Qdobas in the Chicagoland area. There's not a lot of Qdoba locations in the city, and out of all of them this is my go to location. There's always parking on Wells, and the location is conveniently located not far off of the Eisenhower. This location is always clean (for being in the loop), and the employees are committed to customer service. Ingredients here are always fresh, and they never skimp on their servings. read more

Our office catered from Qdoba for our cinco de mayo lunch. Food was great! Free lunch for today. Generally, Qdoba is similar to Chipotle, only Qdoba offers free guac. You got me at free guac... Let's be real. Also, the chips are addicting. The salt on the chips is so satisfying. Generally, bowls are around 9 dollars with tax, but Qdoba also has mini bowls which are decently priced if your looking for a lighter meal. There can be a lunch-rush any given day from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. But, what lunch spot doesn't in the loop doesn't have a rush? read more

I've got another Qdoba review on the books so I'll get down to business. Qdoba is about on par with Chipotle and Burrito Beach in terms of authenticity, but here's the one thing it's got going for it the others don't - the Qdoba Card. Each time you eat you get points and those points get you stuff. Even better the stuff doesn't have to be free Qdoba food, you can get gift certificates to lots of other places! Even though I prefer Chipotle (you haters can suck it!), I'd probably give this place 4 stars because the food is decent and the card is pretty cool, but I have to knock them down a peg for service. Service is inconsistent; occasionally I stand at the counter waving my arms like I'm directing a 747, but most frequently I'm practically getting pushed out the door. I don't care how smiley they are, they need to give people a chance to hand their money over before they start moving on to the next guy. It's like one of those lame debit card commericals where paying in cash brings everything to a grinding halt! If they're that concerned with the line backing up try putting another cashier on duty! read more

Those of us who work at home, occasionally have to bathe, put on a clean outfit, polish up our table manners and take it downtown to meet a fellow freelancer for lunch so we can bitch about the sorry state of the economy. Comparisons to Chipotle are unavoidable here. Qdoba burritoes are as delicious and well-seasoned, with a similar array of add-ons and ingredients. I opt for the bowl rather than the traditional tortilla wrap, as I dislike jamming something larger than my hand in my mouth. Wait . . . okay, never mind. ;-) However, Chipotle, comes out ahead. When I go to a place like this downtown (up north, I always opt for a non-chain taqueria), it's because I'm Really Hungry, and Chipotle gives you more food for the money. With a drink, a burrito lunch comes to $9, and that's sorta pricey (another vote for taquerias) for my frugal fashionista self. And that brings me to one of my rants about Chicago. WAYYY too many chain restaurants downtown. What is it about the Loop and environs that there are almost no one-off, unique restaurants? Must everything be homogenized and sanitized?! That said, this place is fine for lunch. The ordering method is speedy, and the place looks clean. The guys behind the counter are super cute and had big smiles for me - very pleasant. I really was enjoying my waffle and chicken until I got the bill. Me and my boyfriend both ordered 1/2 fried chicken with waffle for dinner. As we were eating we decided that we would need another waffle to go with the two pieces of chicken we both had remaining. We asked our waiter if ordering an additional waffle was possible, he stated he had to check. He came back to inform us we could order additional waffles. We fail to ask how much it would be but we had no idea it would cost just as much as our original order. The 1/2 chicken and waffle cost $15.99 each and one plain waffle was $9.99 each. I couldn't believe it! The price of the waffle was printed on the opposite page of a black and white xerox copy menu but it wasn't told to us the cost (unfortunately, we fail to ask). I asked to speak with the manager and explain my disbelief and how I would have done better order an entire meal of 2 pieces of chicken and a waffle for an additional $2 for the price of 1 waffle. That ruined the rest of the night for me! There is just no way 1 plain waffle should cost $9.99 compared to a meal with meat and waffle. This incident has turned me off from Melli Yellow. I will NOT frequent this restaurant ever again if it's left up to me! I'm telling this to everyone I know -- know what you are getting before you order. read more

Qdoba is a well run machine. This place does well even during the busy lunch hour. I'm a fan of their craft two menu. It allows me to try different items on the menu. Also, the portions are pretty filling--enough for two meals sometimes. Qdoba also sometimes offers promotions for free stuff and their loyal program also has some perks. There's plenty of seating at this location but because its downtown the lunch hour may be tough to find a seat. read more

Ha, I use to eat breakfast at this place several days a week, but had a bad experience and decided to avoid it altogether. After patronizing this restaurant several days a week and ordering the same breakfast the employees started to recognize me and make polite small talk. My bill was always $5.02 for a breakfast bowl, but apparently they were billing for a small instead of a large which is only $7.50 or so. After paying the same price for months, I had no idea that I was paying a lesser price. One day an employee attempted to ring me up for the $7.50, and I reminded her that it was $5.02 every other day that I ordered the same breakfast and she seemed to happily adjust the price. One day, I walked in and she hurried over (ran passed three people who were standing in front of the food) to make my breakfast and piled a little extra food in the bowl (that I didn't ask for), and in an angry matter of fact tone she announced to the cashier, "This is a large!" The cashier said,"$7.50." I looked around and noticed four employees staring quietly like they were watching the last scene of a film. I smiled and quietly paid for $7.50 and never ate there again. It was very obvious that there was some very petty conversation amongst the staff regarding the fact they were charging me $5.02 instead of $7.50. I had absolutely no idea why they originally charged me less, but after getting that price every day I thought the person ringing me up for $7.50 made a mistake. Note: If someone can afford to go out to eat or buy take out for breakfast every day they aren't going to be too upset over $2.00. It would have been much more professional for them to just tell me that the price for the food was $7.50 and they were previously billing incorrectly. It was just the way that they stood around like I was robbing them for $2.00 a day that annoyed the hell out of me. All they had to do was just tell me and I would have been completely fine with it, but the theatrics for $2.00 was hilarious. We clearly need to raise minimum wage in the US, because when employees are uneasy and angry about discussing a $2.00 discrepancy in a bill it's because they are not paid well. read more

I found a BUG in my taco salad. A very large bug. Wider than a dime. It was an giant black bug in my taco salad. The kind of bug you can't believe someone missed when putting the items into the bowl. After a visit to Qdoba, I can safely say that this place is just simply not Mexican food. There are (in my mind) officially two different kinds of restaurant that qualify as "Mexican". The first serves dishes that are "cheap fake Mexican", like Taco Bell and its insane reasoning for combining tortillas and an amalgam of ingredients at a price low enough to warrant not caring about the grease and saturated fat content. The second serves "authentic Mexican cuisine" and makes up for the high prices with some Mexican side dishes that come with a full meal. Qdoba is neither, and is hence not an official Mexican restaurant in my mind. First of all, it is certainly not in the "cheap fake Mexican" category because it's certainly not cheap. While you can possibly consider it "fake" due to the ingredient-based monstrocities like "Roasted Chile Corn Salsa" and "Mango Salads" and "Poblano Pesto Burrito", they do at least serve SOME semblance of Mexican food. But Qdoba needs to learn that CILANTRO DOES NOT EQUAL MEXICAN. The cilantro runs rampant in this place like a nightmare for anyone who, like me and enough others to warrant an actual IHateCilantro-dot-com website's existence, is not fond of this bitter herb. The rice is even famous for having cilantro in it. It's in practically every dish here. I tried this place out and ordered a steak burrito. With no cilantro-infested rice, thank you. If there's one thing I loathe even more than rice infesting my burritos, taking up precious space that could otherwise be filled with meat and beans, it's rice that also tastes of cilantro. Watching the top-notch chef in action, I witnessed as a large tortilla was placed in position, and then blind scooping of haphazard ingredients took over. I may not be a chef, or a Mexican cuisine specialist, but I'm almost certain there's a little art to constructing a burrito. If so, I must have gotten the Picasso of the burrito-art-scene. Let me point out yet another thing. Refried beans are supposed to be a paste. The beans get mashed, creating a pleasant mouthfeel with some slight lumps and a creamy refried bean puree. At Qdoba, they disagree, and ladled in what can only be described as a less-flavorful version of boston baked beans. The beans were still whole, tough and chewy, and swimming in a thin liquid of "bean juice". This restaurant is in the Chicago Loop near many upscale businesses - why would you serve something that threatens at every bite to downpour foul bean liquid on your customers' shirts? The meat was also stringy, and I prefer my salsa with smaller pieces of tomato and NO CILANTRO (but every salsa they offered me contained cilantro, and this one at least was left with sizeable chunks that could be picked out manually as I ate). All in all, a pathetic burrito. That cost me over $7. Add a drink and it was over $9. Here's the last major problem I have with the place: at an "authentic Mexican cuisine" other-option restaurant for Mexican food (for example, Salseria), when you're stuck ordering an entree costing over $7, they give you a heaping side of rice, beans, guacamole, shredded lettuce - and all-you-can-eat tortilla chips. Even at a place less awesome than Salseria, the chips come with the meal. And yet I dropped over $7 for a half-assed burrito at Qdoba and that was it. A large tinfoil-wrapped log dripping bean juice - that's it, get the hell out, screw you. I was so outraged by this (because a true test of a Mexican restaurant is the chips) that I had to go BACK up and place an order for chips. And do you know what she did? Opened up a DRAWER near the register and scooped out some chips into a paper bag. They keep their chips in a freakin' drawer?? On top of that, they were awful chips. I had three and gave up - dumped the bag on a coworker's desk when I got back and said "free chips for anyone who can stomach them" - and several people agreed that three of those chips was their limit. This place fails on every level in my book when it comes to "Mexican" cuisine - and doesn't deserve to display that word in its title. I do not recommend this place at all, unless you are in two groups of people: those who would consider the "best Mexican food" somewhere that served organic non-Mexican bland food but wrapped it in a tortilla - and those who enjoy cilantro to the point of considering it a fetish of theirs. The rest of you should avoid this place like the cilantro-ridden plague that it is. You're better off at Taco Bell. They may have greasy heart-attack-inducing food, but it's cheap and won't drip bean juice on you. read more

Whoever invented Qdoba was a pretty smart person. They saw how successful Chipotle was and pretty much copied their entire business model. Seriously... think Chipotle, add different logos, some additional salsas and toppings and few different names for their burritos and you have Qdoba. They're not as good though. In my last breakup, I got Qdoba before 1pm, and he gets it after 1pm. You so don't want to end up standing next to your ex-bf while waiting in line at Qdoba. Especially since he's no longer forced to listen to my "rice does not belong in burritos" rant in the hopes that I'll shut up and have sex with him later. Speaking of which, rice so doesn't belong in burritos. Beans, yes. Chicken, of course. Yummy veggies? If you are in the mood. But Rice? Of course not. Rice goes on the side. It seems to me that putting rice in burritos is just a cheap way of bulking out the burrito. However, I do love their tortilla soup - its not the usual nasty thick mashed up mess you get elsewhere. They serve the tortilla strips on the side so you can add them at the last minute for crunchy goodness. It's just a little spicy, and best yet, there are no beans and corn in it. As long as I have a few extra dollars in my pocket, Qdoba is a great place to grab lunch. They have a TON of burrito options, all the ingredients are fresh and the quality is top notch. WAY better than McSicko (Chipotle) and only a little bit more on the wallet. I recommend the shredded beef burrito with both corn salsa and salsa verde, cheese, red onion and lettuce. It's Bizarro Chipotle! Although I usually try to refrain from comparing or referring to a competing location/brand, it's hard not to think of Chipotle when you're at Qdoba. Clean restaurant, fast-food taste repeatable menu items, assembly line ordering and food creation...and a long line at lunch (this is a Loop Lunch Location). Am I at Qdoba or Chipotle? Most people will not see a substantial difference between the two, and for the most part you should be able to get what you normally order from Chipotle. "A burrito bowl is called a 'naked' burrito here? Weird!" The major differences for me is that the menu certainly has a lot more variety compared to Chipotle. They also offer quesedillas. I am also a big fan of their Ranchera sauce (part of their Fajita Ranchera Burrito). They also have a mole sauce that's pretty good too. You can also sign up to use a free Qdoba card, which tracks the purchases you make, and gives you a free burrito after you've spent enough. When the weather is nice, they have seating outdoors. Otherwise, on busier days it is a challenge to get seating, especially if you have a large enough group. read more

I think a 3 may be somewhat harsh, but I am giving it this because it is claiming to be authentic Mexican food and charging outrageous prices for it. I don't think the food is terrible or anything, you just shouldn't go here if you want Mexican food. It is kind of like taco bell...just overpriced. For the $8 they charge here, you can get an authentic Mexican burrito, a side of rice and beans, and a drink. I just don't get it really. What I really love about this place is the 3-cheese queso. Maybe they should mix the pinto beans and black beans and call it 2-bean frijoles? Anyway, if you have tried chipotle, you have tried qdoba. There are those fanatics out there that prefer one over the other...all I can say is you probably aren't Mexican if you are truly debating this. They are the same thing except you'll probably spend a little more money at qdoba for the 3-cheese cheese...or for "fajitas" (they add onions and green peppers like Chipotle, except they charge you). This place sucks! it's a good concept, good food but lousy service and management. They are really behind with technology! I ordered Gumbo without meat - but they can't remove meat option. I had to pay for chicken gumbo, however their register will charge you extra .70 for adding Green Peppers and Onions. According to Qdoba, killing animals is less expensive over Green Peppers and Onions! I get it, it's common for Vegetarians to pay extra for their meals, but this one is not worth it $10 for lunch! I find it morally wrong and i would never support them with my business again! read more

If I could find a way to mainline whatever is in Qdoba's rice recipe, I don't think I'd ever be unhappy again. The problem is, I think the secret ingredient is more addicting than anything else I could simularly put into my bloodstream. Having done extensive "scientific" research into all of the fast food Mexican places in Chicago, I have found there is no way to duplicate the euphoria of eating a Qdoba burrito. I have attempted to calibrate all the different salsas, rices, and tortillas at every other similar restaurant (that are closer to work and cheaper than Qdoba such as Burrito Beach and Burrito Buggy, and yes even Chipotle) but it has been an epic fail in conjuring the sheer joy that Qdoba's staple item produces. What I think I have discovered is that it's the rice (which makes me feel bad for those people cursed with being allergic to cilantro in the way that makes it taste like soap) and the sticky tortilla the fillings are wrapped in - which is where I think they actually hide the crack. This particular location, under the El tracks at their southwest corner, recently seems to have added more indoor seating to overcome their one former flaw (long, but quick moving lines and lack of indoor chairs). The window seats are particularly great for people watching on Van Buren Street if you can get them. Personally, I have an issue with waiting to tear into a Qdoba burrito until I get back to the office, so eating in is a necessity. I need my fix right away! read more
