I hope my experience was better because QingShu adapted and got better, because I really enjoyed it! They had quite a few solo diners and a steady stream of customers on a cold, blustery Sunday night. It's not the cleanest place and it is certainly no frills, but I devoured my personal hot pot bowl! You walk in, pick up a bowl, and add your toppings. I thought their selection of meats and vegetables was very good. You pay based on weight, not item, so I loaded up on shrimp, enoki mushrooms, fish balls, and wood ear mushrooms. The spicy broth was delicious and hearty, with good complex and vibrant flavors. The spice was not overwhelming and complemented the protein and vegetables. I of course enjoyed making my sauce with their cilantro. I stopped by Qingshu with some friends over the weekend and tried their Tasty Mushroom broth along with various ingredients, including their lamb, beef, and udon noodles. The broth was rich, earthy, and was generally a good base for all the meats and noodles. The lamb and beef were tender and flavorful, and the udon noodles held up nicely without being too mushy. There isn't table service, as you just grab a basket, pick out your ingredients, then weigh it at the cashier and let them know if you want stir-fry or with a broth. They also have a self-serve drink station with ice maker, hot jasmine tea, water, and lemon passionfruit tea. I love the options! While, I was a long term customer of this spot, which I always have their fried stuff instead of malatang, their malatang is going a downhill... which I don't blame them because their fired stuff are good. I've been ordering from QingShu in person and through delivery apps all year and I don't see that changing in the new year because the food is delicious! I always order the dry pot and customize by adding my fave hot pot ingredients, but there are definitely hit and miss items that I've learned to avoid. All of the fish ball variants are great, as are the mushrooms. The meats are sliced too thick for my liking and end up being tough to chew through, so I usually opt for fish instead. A carb that can soak up the sauce is necessary in my opinion, and I often get noodles to eat with white rice. This is meant to be a comfort meal, not a healthy one! The restaurant offers a small sauce bar in person with sizable togo sauce containers. I find that the dry pot sauce is so flavorful that I don't miss the sauce bar anyway, but if you're ordering something that's milder then it may be a better experience to order in person. The food is prepared quickly so it can be easily taken out to go, and the restaurant is so close to Golden Gate Park that the excursion can easily become a picnic. read more

The ingredients were less fresh (could be the time of day). Also, utensils were not provided for each item, each customer gets one pair of tongs for the entire section, which makes me worried about cross contamination. I came cuz I heard that the pickled chili broth was genuinely super spicy... they must have looked at me and thought I couldn't handle that because my food was like a 3/10 on the spice scale. I was in the Inner Sunset area and stumbled upon this malatang restaurant which was a Sheng Kee Bakery at one point. The concept is similar to Tang Bar at Stonestown, but the selection of ingredients is smaller. Looking at the meat and noodles, they appeared to be portioned already. There is beef, lamb, and chicken options. The usual vegetables and fish balls are also available. I did recall seeing shrimp and squid available for seafood. As for the quality of the ingredients, it didn't appear to very fresh, probably been sitting for a few days, which was a bummer. I don't think there is enough business to move the ingredients unfortunately. I was actually the only person dining at noon on a weekday. The people working here are friendly and do acknowledge your presence and bring your food to your table. The sauce bar on the other hand was better than Tang Bar and Malatown, think more like a hot pot restaurant where you create your own sauce. The broth was alright and was not too salty or overwhelming with MSG. Overall gets the job done if you are craving malatang. This is a truly traditional Chinese restaurant but not the one you'd expect with chow mein and mu shu pork. No, this one specializes in malatang hot pots, a specialty soup originating from Sichuan Province. Basically you grab a basket, pick out your ingredients from a large refrigerated area, have it weighed to determine the price, and hand it over to the staff to cook. When I arrived, even though the refrigerated section was full of meat, fish, noodles, and veggies, there wasn't a single customer in here. Part of the challenge might be that it was somewhat dark inside, besides which, the order process might come across as too cumbersome for the eat-and-run crowd. I may be guilty of that limited thinking because I ordered the already assembled $13.99 Chicken Legs Rice Plate. It was actually served in a bowl since that was their concept. Yummy! I came to this spot for lunch and had fun picking out my ingredients. I was slightly hesitant because the shelves looked very exposed, but the ingredients looked cold and pretty fresh, and my stomach was totally fine. I have a tendency to over-order at my local dry pot place, so it was nice to be able to choose the portion sizes and get a little of a lot of items. (I grabbed a bunch of noodles that had come out of the bundles.) Came here around 7:45pm on Wednesday evening for dinner. There was only one other table for 2 in the restaurant, but they do close at 8:30. You come in and grab a basket and tongs and start to get the fixings for your noodles. There are quite a bit of options for soup bases, which is different from other malatang places. Variety on the fixings is pretty decent. Note that the beef slices are pretty big and heavy, so maybe don't go crazy and grab a bunch. It's 13.99 lb, which is slightly cheaper than some other places. Service was fast as the food came out pretty quickly. There is also a sauce bar. I chose the Szechuan soup base and it reminds me of hot pot. The soup was pretty decent and it was very hot in temperature, so enjoy your bowl carefully. The spice level was at a level that is enjoyable and you can tell there's some heat, but not overpowering. For those unfamiliar, malatang is like hot pot except you pick the ingredients and they'll cook it for you in the flavor of your choice, and there's no active heating component. It's perfect for lazier individuals who just want to eat! Be warned that it is priced per pound so it might end up being a lot of food/money if you lack self control! They have the largest soup selection I've seen for Malatang. I was warned that the pickle chili would be very spicy but for a spice lover I thought it was very tolerable. If you're not craving soup, they also have a dry pot option as well. There's a solid selection of ingredients ranging from veggies to noodles, meat and fish. The only complaint I had would be the meat. All the meat were very thick slices which made it more difficult to eat. Typically in malatang there are marinated meats that are more tender, or very thinly sliced meats which I would've preferred. Otherwise very tasty food and very flavorful and savory soup bases!
