Best pepperoni pizza in Alexandria, we move around a lot so finding our go to is one of the first things we do in a new place.

Quattro Formaggi appears to be just a pie venue. Nothing fancy but great Italian/Mediterranean sustenance. We had two pies that were excellent. The baked ziti was perfectly prepared. Zac's sauce is delicious. The Quattro's Calzone was very good. Zac and his wife are severely understaffed. The phone was constantly ringing with To-Go orders and there were four patrons with families present during our two hour feast. The salads are great. The Almond-crusted Goat Cheese Mixed Green Salad for two was enough for four people (family style). It came with a dressing that was delicious. The appetizer, tomato with fresh mozzarella, was way more than just some cheese and tomato slices dribbled with a basaltic dressing. It was a salad big enough for four. It came with greens and the dressing was Devine. There are about ten Italian/Mediterranean spots within a two mile square. I highly recommend Quattros. It's my fave. read more

---sigh. Where to begin. Thinking I could do better than the hotel grill called Caprese at the Embassy Suites, I moseyed to this Italian restaurant. I was wrong about being able to do better. Here's why: 1) At 8PM, the lights were off on the back part of the restaurant. There were no customers. A couple of young girls who work there were eating at the back. TRANSLATION: They are mentally closed already. They are less inclined to be helpful and service-oriented. 2) Did not tell me I had to order up at the front. I was just handed a menu at my table. The girls resumed eating. I figured out I had to order up front because someone else showed up and ordered up front. This was after 10 mins I was waiting at my table, then learned it wasn't THAT kind of restaurant. TRANSLATION: These people checked out a long time ago. See #1 3) Food should show up like this: appetizer, soup/salad, main course, dessert. This is how mine showed up: salad, appetizer and main course at the same time. TRANSLATION: These people could care less about serving you as a customer properly since they checked out mentally already. So they served me as the food came out. I wanted my appetizer first, dammit. That just made sense. 4) The girls that worked there, one of them was in their teens and the other in her late teens-early 20s, visibly horsed around behind the counter and in front of the customers. TRANSLATION: They could care less that this is a place of business. At this point, customer service and professionalism has lost any meaning now. 5) The calamari was good. The salad was okay, but the Italian dressing was chunky, almost looked like congealed cream of tomato soup. The dressing tasted like nothing. So the salad was eaten dry. The manager asked me how it was, and I told him about the salad. He told me that I had a choice in dressing. I told him I was never offered a choice. He told me I did, for next time. The spaghetti was more spaghettini than spaghetti. Tiny noodles. Nickel-sized meatballs. The hell?! Tasted good though. I figured the manager was probably the owner of the business and the girls were most likely his. Complaining about these girls would have made him very defensive. So I didn't bother. Very hard to argue with that. I took my cannoli and ran. Oh, by the way. There wouldn't be a next time. This is even if I lived close by. You're already closed by 8PM. I doubt you'll miss my business, or anyone else's for that matter. read more

Outstanding food. Employees and owner are very kind and welcoming. I was thoroughly impressed with this place. We ordered the Bianca Margarita pizza. Richest flavor of any white pizza I've ever had. Good size slices for decent price. You can tell the ingredients are high quality, and the flavor design is varied. The service was top notch, the restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was casual/friendly. As first timers, my wife and I felt humbled at how they treated us like family. First they delivered my pizza with half of the toppings all slid to one side, and I did not speak out -- Because I was too hungry. Then they argued that cheese was a topping on my deluxe five topping pizza, making it a semi-deluxe four topping pizza, and I did not speak out -- Because four toppings is better than none. Then they made my deluxe "olives, mushroom, pepperoni, tomato, AND I would like to have sausage on only half" pizza, a half cheese pizza with all ingredients on the other half. -- Because people love paying extra for a 1/2 cheese pizza. Then they yelled at me for not being more clear - and there was no one left to speak but me. Never again! I've had it with the owner. You do not yell at a customer when you take an order incorrectly, or here's a hint- EVER! I've ordered delivery from them four times, and the quality just keeps on going down and down. The last attempt was just a bland mess that I had to try to salt to make it taste like something. Quattro Formaggi is a fan of head games. The food here is pretty great, as said below, they're known for their pizza, I'd recommend their White pizza, they had a story in the Post about it hanging on their wall. I'm a sucker, I see read those articles, and usually order what they tell me. Journalists are always right. ;) I'm also a big fan of their soup. Warning, if you order a bowl of soup, don't order anything else. The portion is HUGE. They basically deliver a child's play pool filled of it. However, the service has been really great, and really terrible, which is why I never know what to expect. This place is right near work, and right near class so I catch dinner there often. One time after class a couple of classmates and I thought we could go here and go over a project. The place shut down after we got our meals, leaving us outside with our trays, and in a state of perplexity. Once with Keri M., we both ordered the special, they were out of the special, and when we tried to order something new, they tried to force us to get something of the same price so they wouldn't have to ring up a new order. Other times I've been there, and I've been treated really well, with people behind the counter making suggestions and small talk while I've looked over the menu. I'll be honest though, it's really the convenience of location that brings me back, I don't know if I'd make special trips if I wasn't located like a block away. Update: I've changed it from a 3 star to a 2 star, after my friend tried to tell the cashier her salad dressing had gone bad (it was, it tasted really funky), he yelled her, and told her it was fine, and they would never serve bad dressing. Then he took a fork full from her plate and tasted it! Said it was fine, and refused to let her switch her food out. Terrible, just terrible. read more

I went there with family for dinner on a Sunday evening when many places are not open, and I probably would have given it a 3/5 rating then because it was okay, nothing special. Overall, service was good and food was sub-par. Now, however, I am giving it a 1/5 due to a recent delivery experience. My husband called around 10 pm for a late dinner, when they are supposed to be open according to Google and Yelp listed hours. The woman answered rudely and said that they were closed, but would take the order because the oven was still hot. Good news, we thought, knowing that the food might be the end-of-the-day kind of food. Our order was delivered 45 minutes later. We paid $30 just for a lasagna entree and a small pizza, so we gave what we thought was an appropriate tip. The delivery man, however, told us we were lucky it was his last delivery of the night because we should have given more tip. He said, "Maybe next time you'll give more tip." The food itself was fine. Again, nothing special. With that kind of service, however, we will not be ordering from them again and would not recommend it. read more

Open for lunch and dinner. Fresh-cooked food with a lot of options for sandwiches and salads and pizza. Options include paninis, wraps, gyros, pizza, parmigiana sandwiches and salads. They have indoor and outdoor seating. My favorite sandwiches include the roasted vegetable panini and the chicken or eggplant parmigiana sub. The bread on the subs is AMAZING - crusty on the outside, but not too crusty, and soft on the inside. The bread for the subs has always been fresh. For $9 (on the pricey side) you can get a salad with mixed greens and a fancy cheese (gorgonzola or chevre), pine nuts and olives. Or you can get iceberg with cold cuts for about $7. The salad dressing here is SO GOOD. Judging by the flavor, I think the dressing comes with about 20g of fat, but it's worth every gram. Despite working nearby, I have avoided this place, because the employees are rather cold and curt and because I find their lack of organization annoying. You have to wait for your order (the price you pay for fresh-cooked food) and you don't always hear them when your order is ready. Once, my friend finished his meal before I even got mine. Their system for notifying you when your meal is ready remains a mystery to me. Sometimes they call out your number, sometimes call out the food you ordered, sometimes they just leave your food out. When you go at lunchtime, you have to keep interrupting the conversation with the person you're with to listen intently anytime you hear a sound coming from the direction of the kitchen. So, I recommend against going here when you're really hungry (which, in my case means cranky). read more

At least 2 of the 4 items they have on their "veggan" menu (as it is misspelled on their paper menu, not the website) are NOT vegan-- one contains butter, the other cheddar cheese. I called them 2 YEARS AGO to explain what veganism is and that they should simply relabel this section of the menu "vegetarian" if they did not wish to make the entrees "vegan." While they have since changed items on the vegan menu, the same egregious error remains. DAIRY IS NOT VEGAN. ANIMAL PRODUCTS IN GENERAL ARE NOT PART OF A VEGAN DIET. I am going to be honest, I have never eaten at Quattro Formaggi, nor as a vegan would I necessarily think to go to a restaurant with "formaggi" in their name. However, the inclusion of a "veggan/vegan" menu suggests some attempt at an interest in catering to those who do not consume dairy. Problematically, including these offerings that are not in actuality vegan and thus show an inadequate understanding of veganism, suggests to me that this restaurant does not care about actual dietary/ethical practices and is trying to profit off of what has become a trendy niche market. It also suggests to me that if I were to go here and order something without dairy products, this request would probably not be taken too seriously and perhaps not respected at all. read more

This place is OK. The few times I have eaten here it has satisfied my hunger but I can't say I am blown away by the food. It is convenient to several hotels and apartments in the area and is open until 10 so they get points for that. It appears that the ingredients they use are fresh. I did enjoy my last visit here when I ordered the Puttanesca pizza which had all of the salty goodness associated with that dish including whole anchovy slices on the pizza which I love. The crust was very good too. Thin and chewy. Pizzas come in individual sizes as well as the standard sizes and they don't skimp on the toppings. I was excited to finally have found a brick oven pizza place that sells slices. However, I can't give a good review. On our second visit, I opened my finished soda to get an ice cube to find a chunk of mold. It was about the size of my pinkie nail. Obviously they're not properly servicing their soda machine. I don't want to know what else isn't cleaned as it should be. Worse, we showed them and they just said, oh, looks like mold. When I pointed out that it was really terrible and asked if they've cleaned the soda machine the guy just shrugged. So gross! We won't be going back. read more

I would like to start by saying my wife and I used to use this as our go to for Pizza delivery, and for the most part, it was decent... not good, but not bad. It was a huge ordeal to avoid having soggy, overly oily, and quite honestly, not fully cooked pizza... If you like "well done" or even a little bit of crisp to the pizza, you REALLY have to hammer it home to them, and even then, I'd say it's 50/50 at best. That wasn't the dealbreaker however, what did it for us was horrible service/rude phone operators... sure they always seemed a little short, and less than friendly, I'm not one to care about that. But one night we called and requested a delivery (again we've ordered there at least once a month for the better part of a year by this time, and always tip well on top of that) and after he asked for my address, he interrupted me and said "No! we too busy to go out there, if you want, you come pick up!" With even more edge than usual mind you. So I sort of taken aback, manage... "Oh, ok" He says "Ok you come pick up?" I say "No." Click. Haven't been back since, Paisano's is just as good/if not better (they actually cook their pizza and include ingredients other than oil) more affordable, and far better service. Too bad really. Usually try to avoid chains and help smaller businesses, but that place has to shape up. read more

Pizza is good...last time I went, had a chicken parm sandwich, just like I remember from growing up in the northeast. Although, I like the large generous slices of the cheesiest pizza, I couldn't remember why I hadn't been there in a couple of years. Ah, went back and they were nice enough to remind me-the service can really suck sometimes. This last time I went in for two slices of pizza (at a pizza place) at 7 pm in a Friday night. 30 minutes later, no pizza. I looked back at the guy who creates one of 5 or so nicknames for everyone and he is talking it up with the cashier. Hmmm...needless to say that in a couple more years I will probably forget why I don't go there, but this time it only took $6.60 to remind me that the this place sucks, a bargain actually. Update 3/12 - more reason to not go, don't use a credit card, a few friends and I have been there at various times, but they saved up all of their credit card receipts for payment for months. A friend of mine went in October, the transaction cleared in March, me in early January and it cleared in March. It solidify's the poor customer service - poor management. read more

Good quick place for lunch. The name was a little misleading, I had been looking for a pizza place near work, and really didn't expect it to be ny style. I was pleasantly surprised! Quattro Formaggi is one of the better ny-style slices in the area. Floppy, greasy, and filling. I recommend the white slice - garlicky with tons of cheese. I am not a fan of this place. I have been here on 2 separate visits for pasta and I haven't been pleased either time. At this point, I can't vouch for their pizza, but I'm sure I'll try it at some point. (read: I'm a sucker and will try places I don't enjoy multiple times. Maybe I just like spending money?) 1st visit: Lasagna 2nd visit: Spaghetti with meat sauce Each time, I visited Quattro Formaggi on an "oh-god-must-have-this-food-right-now-or-I-will-die" craving. Their spaghetti sauce is too tart. Their meat is weird (and not plentiful). And, hand to Zeus, they love oregano like I have never tasted. Both dishes kind of reminded me of pasta from elementary school, where the lunch ladies relied on cans and cans of tomato sauce which contained more preservatives than actual tomatoes. That last sentence came out more scathing than I intended. Sorry, QF. PROS (I'll just throw these in to be a good sport): The location is great. There is seating outside that gets amazing sunlight during the afternoon. They're located about a 5 minute walk from the patent office. Their service was decent and sufficiently speedy (I waited about 5 minutes), and it looks like their location could handle a nicely sized group during lunchtime. Where can you get a great calzone or stromboli in Alexandria? There's only one answer: Quattro Formaggi! Occasionally they have a few calzones by the pizza slices -- I don't recommend those. Instead, ask for a fresh one and prepare to wait at least 10-15 minutes. Your wait will be rewarded with a generously sized, freshly baked, pocket (or loaf) of Italian goodness! Quattro's calzones and strombolis are excellent....so why only a three star rating? One nit picky reason and one more substantial reason (at least to me). First the nit picky reason....the calzones' and strombolis' dough bakes to form a quite hard crust. The hard crust is fine, but unfortunately Quattro has only plastic forks and knives. Perhaps it's just my technique, but I've broken at least one fork and/or knife every time I've eaten Quattro's calzone or stromboli! The more substantive reason for my mediocre score is the combination of the somewhat confusing counter (for ordering) and the disinterested demeanor of the staff. The counter has at least two places to order (and I've seen people shout out orders at other places along the counter) and it's unclear where to go -- and I've been told multiple times to go to the other location. read more

A lack of basic English + inability to do basic math means that I can never order from this place again. Sucks, cause the pizza was good. So, we have a coupon for a "gourmet or up to 5 toppings" pizza from this place. We decide on a "deluxe" gourmet pizza which is described in the menu as "everything! Up to 6 toppings" which tells me nothing. So, I call to place the order, mention the coupon, specify my 6 toppings, and wait for the pizza to arrive. When it does, I find that they have somehow charged me for 6 toppings on top of the regular price, nevermind the stupid coupon. So I explain to the delivery man that this is an incorrect total, then call the pizza place to correct it, thinking it is a simple mistake, easy to correct. No. This turns into an argument about the semantics of the menu and coupon with at least 3 people. In the end, they still wouldn't give me the correct total, and I was not about to argue for an hour about a couple of bucks. I am still fucking mystified as to how this makes any sense, but for those of you who may encounter this in the future, allow me to enlighten you: the people who run this place don't count their "gourmet" pizzas as being in a separate category from "make your own" no matter what the layout or wording of the menu suggests. Why does this matter, you ask? Well, in the event that you use a coupon, please count the toppings on the damned "gourmet" pizza, lest you be charged for them if they number above the stated amount (as several do) or just in general. Or, argue with the guy on the phone before you make your order, not after. Also, the menu says free delivery. So, check that your total reflects that. To sum up, 4 stars for the pizza itself which was not cooked as I ordered it and was greasy as hell, but was overall damned good. 1 star for the customer service. read more

I've been there several times for lunch with friends. Only to get pizza though, so I can't vouch for the quality of other food they have. Prices are fair, but it's interesting to note that for the price of two slices of pepperoni you can get three of cheese for just a few cents more - what I'm getting at is you pay a lot for a topping (75 cents I think). Seems a bit much when they charge like $2 for a topping on a whole pizza and this is only 1/8 of a pizza. Best bet is to split a pie with a friend and pocket the savings. This place has quality wannabe New York style pizza. (At least in Alexandria). Both times I have gone I've ordered the Club and the Bianca. The pizzas are thin, foldable soft, and have the right amount of sauce/cheese. The Bianca is pretty much a plain cheese with no sauce and basil toppings. The second time I ordered the Bianca, I held the basil and added sauce. The Club has ham and chicken as toppings and comes with sauce. Both are really tasty pizzas. I haven't dined in here, but the restaurant is clean and tidy and always seems to be busy (at least in the kitchen). The service is fast and nice enough. I don't really have any complaints in this department, but they also don't earn a gold star. Prices are a little high, but with the printable coupons on their website, it makes it a little easier to swallow. I have had a better New York pizza before, but with the proximity to my house and quality product made, this is my go-to spot until something better comes along. read more

So, I've continued my search for gluten free pizza that's edible and actually tastes like pizza. Quattro Formaggi has done a pretty damn good job. We've ordered two different white pizzas from there and they both have been really good and I didn't get sick! Having a gluten allergy is generally a crapshoot when you eat out because of cross contamination, but QFs has done alright by me so far. The boyfriend even ate the pizza without complaining (he insists that food that normally contains gluten NEEDS gluten) - so that is a pretty good barometer of the quality of the crust. He also got a steak and cheese, mozzarella sticks and I got a side salad. Not sure I'm a huge fan of the house dressing, but its passable. Very disappointed by their business practice! Will never visit again!!! I bought a 16'' pizza with half meat and half veggie, and was charged almost $23.98. A whole "meat lover" or "veggie" 16'' pizza costs $16 only. If the person who answered our call could tell us that our order for one 16'' would cost $24, we would order just two 12'' pizza for $26 ($13 each). It's not the amount of money we paid made us angry, it's the feeling of being ripoff does. Originally we planned to buy two 16'' pizza, but were afraid it would be too much for two persons, that's why we chose one 16'' pizza: half meat and half veggie. We called back after pickup to complain about this problem, the guy apologized and said a 10% discount will apply to our next order, but we will not order from this restaurant anymore, so the 10% discount will not matter to us. We made the mistake for not asking the total over the phone, so I guess we should blame ourselves first. read more

This place is the definition of meh. I've worked across the street for years and as a result end up here every now and again. Not if I can help it though, because I'm usually just too lazy to walk an extra block for real food. They offer a variety of things, from pizza, to stir fry, to gyros and quesadillas etc. The problem is, they have so many options, but don't seem to make any one thing well. This place has not failed to disappoint me. Each time I think I'll give them another try, the dish would bore me. Never again. No more chances. This is it. This place feels like an abusive boyfriend. It never treats me right but I keep coming back for more (only because it's so conveniently located). Every single time I've ordered delivery from them, the total price that they quote me on the phone is $4-$6 less than the price that the delivery guy tells me... every single time.. . not to mention the people on the phone are all surly. I think Monterrey's is the better choice, because the people are actually friendly, the pizza is good, and the prices are better.
