Went here with my family and we weren't disappointed much. Just about everything is. good. From the french dip, the pulled pork to the smoked chicken. Counter service and other staff are very friendly and your order will be ready fast. My only caution is this: The baked beans are not good so I would stay away from them. I was working in Galveston on a Saturday, and asked one of my customers for a good place to go for a quick lunch, and Queens was what they recommended. I ordered their Smoked Turkey Cliffhanger, and got my food very quickly. I must say, that was the most tender and flavorful turkey that I've had in a long time. I got the sandwich with their Jalapeño bread, and I'm glad I did. It's not spicy, but the flavor was great. This sandwich was incredible; I'm happy I listened to my customers recommendation! Having a week to spend in Galveston, we decided to try out the two BBQs that Galvastonians seem to either love or hate. Here's the rundown: 1. Hospitality: Our waitress at Leon's took the time to explain the menu, to recommend a "Leon's cut" of brisket for someone who isn't afraid to enjoy life, and came back often to make sure everything was OK. The counter worker at Queen's acted like she was pissed off we were there. Advantage: Leon. 2. Meat: The aforementioned "Leon's cut" of brisket was succulent, cooked perfectly, and had an awesome crust of smoky, salty fatty goodness. The "brisket" at Queen's looks like packaged roast beef from Kroger's that was dredged through some crappy sauce. Advantage: Leon. 3. Sauce: As mentioned, Queen's appears to have one kind of sauce. You get whatever they throw on your meat. And what there was of it, sucked. Leon's sauce is perfectly balanced to enhance the meat, but not overwhelm it. And there's a big bottle on your table, so you can have all you want. Advantage: Leon. 4. Portion size. Queen's gave us enough for dinner. But Leon's stuffed us at dinner. Plus we had enough leftover to make picnic sandwiches the next day. Advantage: Leon. 5. Flies: There were none buzzing around Leon's. But at Queen's, we think we were able to positively identify House Flies (Musca domestica), Blow Flies (Calliphoridae spp.), and several Fruit Flies (Drosophila spp.). Advantage: Queen. As you see, in 4 out of 5 categories, Leon's kicked arse hands down. All in all, we were pretty amazed that anyone would prefer Queen's over Leon's. Any ideas from the natives? read more

Queen's is one of those places that, once you find it, it's difficult to forget it. On the island there are a lot of restaurants to choose from, and this one is a good spot because not a lot of tourists learn about it. So it's mostly locals that frequent the restaurant. The restaurant has country decor and is spacious with seating. The setup is a get-in-line-and-order style and they call your number once your food is ready. Extras like pickles and onions are avail as a small bar by the beverage fountains. The menu is straight BBQ with a variety of meats, and everything we have tried has been well worth it. They have regular platters and sandwiches, but we go for the monstrous spuds. The potatoes are the largest ones I have ever seen, topped with the meat of your choice, cheese, chives, onions, and sauce. And that's all you need! The taste is packed into the meat and sauce and I usually can't even finish my spud before I am stuffed! The parking is limited, so I recommend parking on the street. They occasionally have outdoor tables available, which can be nice when it's cooler and the wind isn't too strong off the gulf side. read more

I ordered 1/2 lb moist brisket, what I received instead was dry over cooked lean brisket drowned in some sort of sauce, I managed to take one bite and almost spit it out. Thank goodness I also got a second meal to try. Pork dinner was ok, turned out to be chopped pork, I had green chile cream corn and potato salad. The green chile corn was super bland, it had no heat and the flavors never blended. The potato salad was decent, filling. Queens is a no-frills place that has very good meat (especially, in my opinion, the sausage); "sides" and the pina colada cake hit the spot, too. The sauce is a complete miss for me, though: tastes to me like ketchup and sugar, thinned liberally with vinegar. Guess my Yankee upbringing makes me think barbecue sauce should be rich, thick, smoky....and only just slightly sweet! My daughter knows I love BBQ. I own a 55 gallon ugly drum smoker, so I really am fairly serious about smoked meat. She said, "Dad, you HAVE to try this bbq place. They have a sandwich called the Cliffhanger!" (My assumption was pulled pork.) We were going to be in town only for a few days, and she was determined that I not miss out on this! What is a Cliffhanger, you ask? It is a 1/3 lb of smoked TURKEY with melted cheddar and jalapeno cheese on a large bun with chives and ranch dressing served with jalapeno peppers. When I think bbq, I don't necessarily think turkey, if you know what I mean. Pork shoulder, brisket, burnt ends, etc... But this sandwich was an amazing diversion from the typical bbq pit fare. I didn't get to go into Queens, as our family had scattered for the afternoon and she called to tell me she was picking up food for us. (I told you, she was determined for me to try this sandwich! lol) I could swear there was way more than 1/3 lb of turkey on this thing! It was PILED with meat on a HUGE bun! Great flavors happening, too! It really was a unique sandwich experience! I am giving the Cliffhanger 5 stars. I can't speak for the rest of their menu, but if it's half as good as this sandwich... My only regret is that we're heading out of town and I won't get the opportunity to sample the rest of their menu! read more

Last night was my first visit to Queens-Bar-B-Q in Galveston Texas. After all the good things I have heard about Queens, I was very disappointed. I was not disappointed by the food quality but it was not hot. The biggest thing I was disappointed in was the service. A young man at the counter who took my order failed. I specifically ask about a new item on the menu. Bacon, for $.90. I specifically ask him how much bacon was in The order for $.90. He told me four slices. I asked for it to be put on the side. When I got my order I received approximately half of one piece of bacon crumbled in a half ounce plastic cup. I brought this to his attention and told him that I wanted four slices of bacon as I was told. He went to the back to get more bacon and the owner told him no. Instead of refunding my money I was told no. I will not be back!!! The owner should have corrected the employee and given me what I was promised or refunded my money. read more

So this is my favorite bbq (yes I know how to spell "barbecue," I'm just doing my part to make my reviews slightly shorter) joint in Galveston (my husband prefers Leon's). Another no-frills order-at-the-counter type place. I stick to brisket when I go, either in a sandwich or in a baked potato (it may be referred to as chopped beef or chipped beef or something, but c'mon, it's brisket). Sometimes I get a side of green beans to go with it. My husband has had other menu items and has liked them. I'm never disappointed by the food, though sometimes the service is lacking (once I went about half an hour before closing, and an employee was really, really annoyed that I came up to the soda fountain for my first refill after she was already dis-assembling it, and made a huge production out of how hard it was to put the nozzles or whatever back on since she had some fancy pro-nails). They also close a bit early for making it there for dinner after work. I hope I get the chance to come back, but I'm not sure I will since I no longer live on the island and will most likely be craving seafood when I visit (the Austin area doesn't lack for good bbq, after all). read more

The four of us tried this place out yesterday. WOW! The only thing that would have been better would have been if I could have taken it back to my Home. I had Brisket, which was lean, well flavored with a big smoke ring, good sauce, great Potato Salad and the best easily, Cream Corn I have ever had. My wife had the ribs, cole slaw, and green beans. Thumbs up on them. My friends ate the Senior meals with a side of Cream Corn and Cole Slaw. We all were astounded at how good it was. The people are friendly and the little lady, in her 70's, that still runs the place came out and visited with us to boot. This is a place you need to find, even if it is not on the Seawall. My husband and I stopped here during our week long trip to Galveston. Although the place is kind of a dive, the food is very good. I got the 1/2 chicken, cole slaw, and potato salad. My husband got the pulled pork, corn, and mac and cheese. The meat was very good and even the sides were very good. It's unusual to find good potato salad as where I live seems to think that potato salad is cold mashed potatoes with stuff in it. This was actual potato salad with chunks of potatoes. The cole slaw was creamy and delicious. The BBQ sauce is unusual and couldn't place what was in it but it too was very good. The owner even gave us a free piece of pina colada cake which was also delicious even though I don't typically like coconut. It might be a bit off the beaten track but take the time to go here. One of the best barbecue places on the island. I always get the chopped beef on a bun or a loaded baked potato with beef if I'm really hungry. The sausage is also really good. If your wanting something sweet the pina coloda cake is great, I usually order to go and they are pretty quick, and the staff is always nice.
