Was out from Nevada for a wedding in Lancaster. A bunch of us went to Quips after the wedding and we had a blast! Great beer selection and super accommodating staff! We ordered the nachos with chicken and I forgot to take a picture! I would have appreciated more salsa and sour cream. Outside seating options are always a plus. You can find seating on the front porch or the seated dining area in the back. No complaints about Quips. I have been coming here for years and have always had a good time. I'm down. I see this place packed all the time but never ate there. We got the mussels, a burger, and colcannon, an Irish dish made of cabbage, mashed potatoes and here with bacon. The food was above average for a bar. The mussels stood out with a great broth and soft bread to dip; the burger was dry and small (not recommended) but the greasy parm fries hit the spot; and the colcannon was a pleasant surprise with good substance and bacon flavor. I'll be back for the famous wings and fish and chips! The inside was a bit too dark for us midday but the new outside deck is nice. Service was friendly and helpful. Don't know what this place is like at 1am on Friday (and I might not want to) but on a tame Tuesday afternoon it was a pleasant outing, especially with two harp lagers!! read more

Best place to grab a drink over the holidays. Service is friendly, but in a bar full of locals it can be slow. The servers are a vital part of locals weekly life, so there's a lot of catching up. This place was cute and homey. It feels cozy exactly like an English pub. There's a toy train going around the bar, which filled up. There's a lot of weeknights special. Monday nights are busy: £8/dozen wings. They use pounds instead of dollars on the menu. We came for an early dinner and by 6:30 pm the restaurant was packed. This place is the opposite of pretentious. I ordered a hot toddy, and I got JD whisky, tea, a cup of honey and lemon wedges. I was a bit annoyed I had to mix it myself. But, then it was lovely and only $5. I'm just used to paying $10 for the prettier version. Food was good. Healthy options are scarce. I ordered Caesar salad, salmon with lump crab with potatoes and asparagus. The salad was a bit too heavy and overdressed. My husband had bangers and mash. We came to this small, British style pub in PA because the wedding venue we were visiting was across the street. If you like English beers, or English style this place is definitely your jam. They do offer food (whisky fries for the win). This bar is perfect for when you want to go out for a relaxing evening with your friends, maybe play some darts. Wasn't expecting to write a review today. I was in Lancaster for business and was 2 hours from home. Left work at 4:30 and NAV said it was almost 3 hours to home. Asked Suri for a close bar/restaurant and fell upon Quips. It was early for a pub and the place had just opened and was empty upon arrival. Wandered around the little, unassuming place and looked for a seat at the empty bar-peering behind it for bottles of brown liquor-specifically single malt scotches. I was amazed to see a staircase behind the bar with all top shelf hooch. Bartender handed me a liquor menu where the prices are very reasonable. Had a generous pour of Balvenie Caribbean cask. Great stuff. Ordered a 'special' salmon with asparagus, rice, and peas. Came in a bowl with veggies chopped and included with the rice and a nice portion of perfectly cooked grilled salmon. Forgot to mention the side sales that came out first---complete with green beans, peas and hearts. Service was friendly, attentive and helpful. Could not have asked for a better experience. So sorry this place is 2 hours from home and I may never be here again. read more

Prior to 7/6/09 Quips was one of the three best places to get a draft beer -- the others are Brendee's (very smoky, but a bargain and usually has surprising beers) and Annie Bailey's. Since 7/6/09, Quip's has replaced their tap system and added three drafts, vaulting it to the top of the heap. Quip's has one of the better set of permanent lineup of drafts -- Guiness (best pour around), Boddington's, Harp, Smithwick's, Bass, Stella, Fuller's ESB (a gem), Speckled Hen, and Newcastle. However, they now have three rotating taps, which are always top notch micro's, currently there is Victory Hop Wallop, Sierra Nevada Summer Fest, and Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA. In the past they have carried, Dogfish, Brooklyn, Rogue, Troeg's, Stoudt's, and the like. Oh and the beers are always served in full 20 oz British pints ! The food is very, very good pub food (second only to Characters Pub) along with 3-4 nightly specials and the portions are impresive. I'm not a local. I'm an NYC Philly nightlife person. Hanging out with my nephew in Lancaster for my first St paddy's day. Went to a few places, no live music, not impressed. My nephew tells me quips has live music. Get there around 3, no live music, but it appears like there might be soon, seeing a music stage. I asked my server when the live music is starting, and she says around 6:30. I'm like, great, we have an awesome seat. Then a server comes up and tells us there is a 2 hours table limit. I'm like what? Yes, you have to leave. 6 of us at that table get booted and can't watch the band, unless we go stand by the bar, and maybe get a seat. We already dropped $100-200 at that table, and would have spent another $200 while the band played. I asked to speak to the manager, and while I was getting nowhere with her, someone passed what looked like a 3-6 month swaddling infant to her. I said are you kidding me? What is that little baby doing in this place on a busy day like today? A server butted in, asking me if I'm done commenting. We come to Lancaster a few times a year and this pub was recommended to us and I'm very happy to say this is our new place to make sure we visit when we're here. From the onion soup to the fries to the cheesesteak the food is absolutely delicious. The staff goes out of their way to make sure everything is good and you are satisfied with everything you ordered. Whether you live in Lancaster or plan on visiting the area quips pub is a place you definitely want to visit I promise you won't be disappointed. Quips is the best place to go if you want drink beer and eat really well made food without any stuffiness or pretense. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Some nights can get busy, and the quarters are pretty cramped, but a little patience is worth it. Their wings are the best I've ever had, and on Monday wing nights, make a reservation to go and try all of the flavors. The food and drinks usually come out super quickly, and everything is always hot and fresh. Their pub fair is also really good - best fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and a solid burger. I've had this same wine whenever I come. I asked the server and he said that "oh I know this is a good selling wine and they open new bottles all the time". He would not replace it. Another server came and my friend told her what happened and she said that the first server was the manager and she was sorry they didn't replace it, and couldn't because he was the manager. later she came with another glass of wine. I thanked her for getting the bad glass replaced and she said 'well they charged you for it and I didn't know they were going to do that until after it was poured'. i did not ask for it and I didn't even drink one full glass but paid for two glasses. We are from CA, but decided to visit Quips on the recommendation of a friend who used to live in the area. There were 4 of us in the party and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service. I had the Colcannon - a first for me - it was delicious. Next time I'll probably order it to be served family style for the table to share as a side dish as it was rich and filling, but lacked a protein. Of course, by the time our main dishes had arrived we had already consumed the Brussel sprouts - DELICIOUS - and tomato soup - also delish! Fish & chips - very large serving - the fish was cooked to perfection and the batter was thin and crisp. Two of our group got the burgers and enjoyed them. The scotch eggs were perfectly cooked and yummy. The real star of the evening was the Sticky Toffee Pudding. So good, that we're going back for more. I used to like this place, the beer selection is decent and the fish and chips passable the ambiance interesting, until I had a disappointing encounter with one of the waitresses. We booked a table for four, arrived on time yet had to wait for our table (granted it was busy) which we did patiently and with good humor. We all ordered appetizers, entrees, and drinks. When it came time for dessert, we were told we'd have to eat it at the bar. I have never been told that before. Told matter of factly and NOT asked. We had been at our table for less than an hour. We were a quiet bunch of middle aged married couples. Pretty inoffensive, casually dressed and well groomed. Needless to say we did not stay for dessert and I haven't gone back since. I'm sure they won't miss my business as the place is popular. Having recently spent a month in England where I frequented many pubs all over the country, I can say that I never once encountered such rudeness at a single one. Guess you have to go to England for an authentic pub experience. The kind where the regulars draw you into the group and buy you a drink and generally have a good sense of humor. This place is on my infamous BOYCOTT list. Used to be a huge supporter until this happened: So- a little background. Friends had reserved a section for my buddy's birthday, they were completely cool with it and said we had from 6-8. I was hungry so my girlfriend and I showed up at 530ish to eat first. I ordered at the bar then sat down per the bartenders suggestion in the reserved section. 550ish, food comes out and I begin eating. Veggie wrap and fries. The hostess comes up to me and says I have to move. She said tables are for dinner customers. Okay - I explained that I got here early to eat dinner, shouldn't have mattered that I was with the group because the bartender seated and served me. Apparently not okay because she needed the smallest table near the window. Other tables open, asked if I could move. That's fine. Second table to the left of the dart board. Finished my wrap, working on my fries. Same woman "you gotta move. We have customers" I was still eating, and she tried to take my plate. TRIED TO TAKE IT FROM ME. Then told me I could eat, but couldn't sit at a table. Keep in mind, there's 15 of my paying friends around us and she's treating me like garbage. So I'm left to a chair now to the right of the dart board. Plate is in my lap, eating my fries, cup on the floor. Think you know what's about to happen... "You can't sit there - we need the chairs for tables " I'm left standing eating my fries. She treated me poorly because the rest of the group was there to drink. At a bar. For a birthday. Keep in mind - the restaurant wasn't even busy at this time. I don't get it, don't get what I did wrong. I was trying to be respectful. I'm not some kid here to party. When I arrived it wasn't with a group, I arrived for dinner. I have NEVER been treated so poorly in any service industry. I'm emotional just reliving this in my head. Quips indeed, has the best beer selection in Lancaster. The food is top quality - incredibly delicious and satisfying. We usually go there for wing night on Monday nights. See cm t.'s review for an extensive description. Make sure you make a reservation cause any given night can be very busy. The entire staff is fantastic, though they can get very busy... you kinda have to flag them down for a refill every now and then, but it's that kinda place. Everybody knows everybody. There's also some serious dart players there. Make sure you know your dart etiquette before going. My personal favorites off the menu are - Ayce wings (all you can eat on Mondays), bangers and mash, fish and chips, crab dip, and the burgers. So... The kitchen closes in 4 minutes isn't the greatest greetings I've ever received at a restaurant. That was at 9:35 I asked when the kitchen closed? Was told it was 9:45 there website says 10. When I mentioned this she told me the kitchen closes at 10 but they go by. The restaurant clock and its 15mins fast? At this point we were seated and I informed her we didn't want to be a burden and we'd go elsewhere. She said it was ok but at that point I knew it wasn't going to be a good experience. So we left. I give it 5 stars because it is exactley what my idea of a pub is. - Loud, crowded (if it's a good pub) big beer selection, good food. The wait staff must pool the tips because we had about 3 people asking us if we needed anything or were being taken care of. Big menu so it's hard to choose, but ended up with bangers & mash and english faggots. - both were real good - I thought the bangers were better than Annie Baileys, my wife said she prefered annie's but both were excellent. Stopped in for a cider (they have Magner's on tap) and some food in between dropping my dog off at a kennel and getting a haircut. Being my first time in Lancaster I wasn't quite sure where to go I looked this up on Yelp and it got good reviews so I decided why not? Magners was delicious and I'd come back for that alone. It's got a very dark pub like feel and is situated in an old home. I liked it, but as I chose to sit against a pole, I was quite uncomfortable because I couldn't figure out just how to sit. Overall, it's nothing special inside, but still charming enough to have Man United scarves up on the wall. The food (I ordered french onion soup and french fries - ahaha) was okay - good for a place that is primarily a bar. The fries, while well cooked boardwalk like fries, were unseasoned and fairly bland. I doused them in salt (something I haven't had to do in awhile). The soup was okay - nothing special and not enough cheese and bread. Just another "meh" on my quest for good French onion soup in central PA. I wouldn't say not to get it, I wouldn't say to get it, I'd probably say there are better things out there. I would come back for the drinks and nice atmosphere, but not for the food. read more

I've been to Quips various times over the last fifteen years and this pat time was good, but good wise nothing to write home about! Let's start with the pros... service was great, even with a very busy wing night crowd. Drinks were great as well. Now the only con really was good. Typical bar food.. maybe we didn't pick the right night to come. Clearly the frier was on overdrive and not keeping a consistent temp, because my husband's fish and chips were soggy. I understand the wings were probably hogging the frier, so no biggy, but still not the greatest fish and chips. I, as usual, had a salad and not surprisingly, it wasn't stellar because I ordered a salad at a pub. Come here for a great bar, friendly service, good wings, and a fun place to hang, but if you want a high quality dinner out, go further downtown. Come here after for drinks! read more

This is one of those unfortunately situations where a seemingly good location provided a terrible experience that might just have been a case of bad luck. Looking at the other reviews, I think I'll go back and try again. Went on a Monday evening and it was PACKED. We were told to wait for an hour for seats and hesitantly decided to wait (it was a MONDAY for goodness sakes), looking at 3-4 empty tables while doing so. After an hour and fifteen minutes, we asked the hostess how much longer and were informed it would be at least another 15-30 minutes. When we politely explained that we had been waiting for an hour already and saw those empty tables she could have also responded politely but instead was very reactive and even stomped off (very unprofessional). Her attitude turned us off so much that we just decided to leave and get dinner elsewhere. I understand that she was busy but literally stomping away from customers probably isn't the best way to handle things. All that being said, the ambiance was very cool and the food options didn't really call out to me but the wings looked great. Beer selection was very good. Next time, I'm making a reservation and hoping that the hostess is in a better mood. Hopefully then I'll see why everyone raves so much about this place. read more

From the great local and other beer menu to the whiskey-butter fries, yes you read that right, the food is probably the best pub you will find in the known universe. We got seated pretty quickly outdoors. But the waitress took forever to stop over to ask about our drink orders. We waited and waited. Finally, she comes over and we ask to taste a sample of a rotating beer. She comes over 7-10 minutes later to tell us that the beer is out of stock but forgets to bring my boyfriend's sample. I ask for another sample and she comes back 5 minutes later to tell me that one is out also. And she forgets my boyfriends sample! It took over 20 minutes to get a beer to the table. The house salad was very small even though I ordered a large house salad. I ordered salmon on top and it was delicious. My boyfriend had the fish and chips with home fries, and his meal came wrapped in newspaper! It was awesome!
