Loved our experience here! Did non-traditional Thanksgiving with my daughter and her best friend and we were all so happy with everything we ordered. It was so flavorful and fresh. Our drinks were incredible. The margarita is one of the best I've had ever in my life- literally! Stopped for happy hour on a weeknight! It was a great happy hour with lots of options at varying prices. The sushi was fresh! We really enjoyed the spicy salmon roll. This is good, solid sushi, remember, they are a chain cause I know I've eaten at them in other states. There is consistency to be said for that, the menu is pretty straightforward and they don't get too creative. I've gone with people that had never had sushi before, and it was a good way to introduce them to the concept.. some people don't like raw fish, but there is other things on the menu that you can ease them into the fold. Our choices were the Adults Only Roll, Chili Ponzu Yellowtail Roll, and the Viva Las Vegas Roll. We also ordered an edamame appetizer, yellowtail (hamachi) nigiri and salmon (sake) sashimi. Favorites: the salmon sashimi. Fresh and sliced perfectly. Interesting: Adults Only Roll, which they lit on fire! Least favorite: Viva Las Vegas Roll - I didn't enjoy this at all, and it was too big to eat in one bite. Bland or Uninteresting: everything else. The sashimi was good and I enjoyed the ambiance. I originally came here for a friend's birthday with a party of 9 and I had called ahead to schedule a birthday dessert surprise but our server had ruined the surprise by telling the whole table. The server we had was young and seemed lost about what she was doing, didn't know whose orders she was taking, and the customer service wasn't great either. The server kept coming back to our table because she kept forgetting what my table ordered, even when she wrote everything down. I've came to RA Sushi before and had a better experience. I wanted MORE. The Spicy yellowtail roll, I go live without it. Unfortunately, the calamari had no flavor. It was completely bland. The dipping sauce also, carried no flavor. Absolutely phenomenal as always. I want to start with the service. The maitre d' was polite and seated us quickly. Our server was great. Heather was the perfect mix of professional and personable. She was attentive, friendly, and very patient. Even though she had other tables, we never felt ignored, or rushed. She knew the menu inside and out. My wife is a bit of a picky eater, and after a brief conversation, she had a perfect recommendation. We have always had great service at RA, but Heather is the best we've had. The GM, who was busy with interviews, also took the time to check on the customers. The food was amazing as always. They have a great selection and it is always fresh. Our appetizers came out fast and tasted great. I ordered the A5 Wagyu and it was cooked to my exact specifications. I told Heather how I would like it, and she made it happen. Since I ordered a 3 course meal and my wife did not, Heather brought my wife a soup and a salad just so she didnt feel left out. I didnt catch what her recommendation for my wifes food was but she absolutely loved it. Perfection. Consistency is extremely important for us and RA is always on point. If we order something that we have had before, we know its going to taste the same. I also want to add that the staff keeps everything immaculately clean. My wife and I found Ra in the height of the pandemic, when our go-to sushi joint of 15+ years failed to handle the food service changes well during 2020-21. Since then, we frequented Ra, on average, once per month over the past couple of years. For the balance of the pandemic, we ordered sushi takeout; when things really opened up in 2022, we made many visits to eat FRESH sushi, on site! Most of those experiences were good, to above-average. At the end of 2022, this would have been a five star review, with the only negative being that it felt about 15% overpriced. Yes, even for sushi. Yes, even for sushi in Leawood. The last handful of experiences have been STRAIGHT downhill for our dear Ra, culminating in last night's experience. Since that experience serves as the cherry on top of the cake of reasons why we won't ever go back, I'll describe the many fails we encountered. We ordered a dinner of our favorite maki rolls online for a 4:45 pickup. The competency of ordering online is where the positives end with this experience. I showed up at 4:50 to pick up the order. When I walked in, there was no host, nor were there any wait staff in the bar area to flag down. Having done this before, I knew where to look for the prepared pickup orders. None in sight. I waited for about five more minutes, and only saw the bartender, and about five sushi chefs behind the sushi bar. No waitstaff anywhere. As I was beginning to round the bar to approach a sushi chef, I saw another worker come out of the kitchen area with four bags of food. I paused, and she approached the pickup area, and set down all four bags. One was mine. Hmmm...interesting, I thought. Four orders of supposedly-fresh sushi, ready all at once from the kitchen? Upon arriving home with the haul, the disappointment sank in. All four of our rolls, which we've ordered more than a dozen times before, had shrunk in size by a factor of at least half. Not kidding - it was as if they fell victim to at remake of "Honey, I Shrunk the Sushi." Shrinkflation was our assumption, but hey, if the flavors were all well and good, then, chalk it up to a bad week of fish and ingredients. Ohhhhh, man....a BAD week of fish, it was. Every single roll tasted of terrible, stinky fish. Every single roll was also chilled. Considering two of our four rolls were to have WARM ingredients, it became apparent that there was likely a good reason why our food suddenly appeared from the back. My working assumption is that the order was prepared hours before (likely at the time of order online?), and popped in the fridge until my pickup time. Even that, likely, doesn't describe just how bad this haul was. Every roll. It was like weeks-old fish, prepared by a rookie at a local grocery store, aged in the cooler for a few days, plucked up by a customer (unfortunately, me, in this scenario), and consumed. Alongside the "fishy" taste, minuscule size, and stale flavors, two of the four rolls were horribly constructed, and incapable of keeping whole while taking the journey from dish to mouth. As I mentioned before, this ended up being the culminating, final straw for us here. We've had a couple B-rate experiences this year, but they weren't bad enough to keep us from returning. Unfortunately, this poor location seems to be on its deathbed. Tough sell for the asking price. If anyone has a favorite sushi joint that isn't this place, send me a note! We're now on the hunt... I am long time member of The Kansas City Sushi Group on MeetUp. I made a decision to select Ra Sushi for an event during their Sunday 3pm - Midnight Happy Hour. We had a smaller than usual turnout (not sure why) but 6 people attended and .. EVERYONE enjoyed Ra Sushi! We 'cleaned our plates' as mama used to say. Not a bite left as we paid our tabs to go home! Drinks, appetizers, sushi and the like were all 100% first rate. If anyone reading this has stepped away from Ra due to the past(?) C'mon back. We received great service and excellent dining at a fair price. Happy to say I got a personal phone call from their General Manager Sean Sunni the next day to see how The Kansas City Sushi Club was treated and if the food delighted us. How rare and how nice! I came here for a catch up with some friends during happy hour on a weeknight. The decor is upscale Japanese vibes with a small patio area out front. It's located near Town center, so parking is sparce out front but there is a free parking garage about a 2ish minute walk from the restaurant. Service was great, our waitress was very attentive throughout our stay. She worked with me to find a comparable sake when they were out of one and answered all of our questions. We ordered her recommendation of a cucumber Collins and it was on point. The sushi was on par with other places around the city. We ordered quite a bit of mango forward rolls - which was my first experience doing so. The flavor was complemented quite well and not overpowering. The sushi could have standed to be just a hair more seasoned with the rice. Regardless, you'll find pretty much anything you like as the menu has a ton of options. We came here last Friday and ordered chips with salsa as an appetizer, but the chips were so stale we couldn't eat them. We kindly asked the waitress to take them back. The restaurant itself was very dirty -- there were fruit flies everywhere, and the table we were given was so filthy we had to clean it ourselves. When we were ready to leave, we asked for the check, but the waitress took forever to bring it. We had to ask another staff member to help us get our bill. By the time we received it, we had been waiting over 45 minutes -- and the restaurant wasn't even busy. I would understand the delay if they were overwhelmed, but that wasn't the case. The waitress seemed upset and never apologized for the delay. It was completely unprofessional. We used to come here years ago when it was good, but unfortunately, it's now rundown, dirty, and staffed with rude employees. We won't be returning. read more

The sushi and sashimi were delicious! Unfortunately I think our assigned waitress was going through a break up or some kind of drama mess on her phone. Every time I looked up- she was sitting at the bar texting 90 mph. I had to get up and ask a different waitress if they could tell our waitress if she could bring out our miso soup and salad. It was my kid's birthday so the virgin drink we ordered stayed empty about half the time we were there. I don't know if anything special happens if it's someone's birthday either. I figured since on Google it asks for the occasion. Speaking of the miso soup and salad, the entre we ordered was a platter of different sushi rolls. It can feed four individuals- which it did, but you only receive one miso soup and one salad. I guess the other 3 will sit and watch ya eat the miso soup. Probably won't be returning. Sushi Sensi If you seek sushi in a contemporary atmosphere decorated in sleek blacks and passionate reds located in the heart of Leawood Kansas, in Park Place, then Ra checks all your boxes. However, if you want clean, contemporary, and sleek sushi rolls then Ra will probably disappoint. But, on a Friday night my date booked a 6pm reservation and I did not speak up on the fact that the last time I had visited Ra was on my 16th birthday, 10 years ago instead, I was just over joyed to have some sushi. It had been weeks too long. When I arrived at Ra the music was playing entirely too loud, the tables were placed entirely too close together and all in all the vibe was just not right. But, I withheld my judgments and tried to relax and let the club like atmosphere take me over. Once seated we were not given menus right away and our server was overall pretty inattentive to us right off the get go but, I tried to ignore this fact as well and ordered a specialty cocktail. The Cucumber Collins arrived pretty fast but, it was a lackluster cocktail creation with more simple syrup and seltzer than seemingly anything else for my second round I stuck to a sine gin and tonic with Hendricks. We decided upon a modest three rolls to split between the two of us and thankfully my date proved to be very open and adventurous to different spice levels, types of fish, and textures. So, the first roll was the Hot Night Roll, containing albacore tuna, nice and plump and juicy in the inside of the roll, I liked it. It also was made interesting with the citrus zip of the ponzu sauce however, the component that most intrigued me, the garlic chips were definitely lost in the roll and I never detected them. The vegetables, crunchy cucumber and tender avocado were fresh and pleasing so, overall this roll was probably a 3.5 out of 5. It was kind of overwhelming on the spicy mayo and overall flavor profile was sort of muddled but I really liked the sauce and the tuna was great quality. Now, the Crazy Monkey Roll again really sounded spectacular but lacked in taste when it arrived, but I will note presentation was definitely on point for this roll. It claimed to contain smoked salmon, which I wish was raw salmon but ok, and also cream cheese, which overpowered the entire roll, not great. But what really got me was that I was so intrigued by the description of red tempura bits and sauteed cashews...neither of which I really tasted at all, quite disappointing. The ample drizzling of the mango and eel sauce were way too sweet for a roll that already had salmon and cream cheese, two sweet ingredients. Probably a 3 out of 5. The third roll was my overall favorite however, it too had it's flaws. The chili shrimp roll overall I thought had the most cohesive flavor profile however, it was very cumbersome to eat. The imitation spicy krab mixture was the right creamy texture and spice level but, what I wished was done differently was I wish the sweet and spicy tempura shrimp was somehow incorporated into the roll and wasn't just placed on top because they were big shrimp and hard to consume with the roll itself, you almost had to deconstruct it. The jalapeno added a nice crunch and kick on the very top of the roll but we're precarious balanced on top of the shrimp. It really came down to how well all these flavors played together in the roll and how each ingredient was distinguishable, I would say a 4 out of 5 and it would be the only roll I would consider ordering again. All in all, it took me ten years to return to Ra and in all seriousness it may take me ten more to come back ... it's just sub par sushi, nothing special or unique, the menu seems uninspired and like things are sort of just slapped together to create and appetizing sounded roll that under delivers when it arrives. The decor and overall vibe is meant to distract you from mediocre Midwest sushi. Seek sushi elsewhere in smaller establishments that take themselves more seriously. read more

This has to be one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left. If my friend had not wanted to stay because we drove such a long way I would have never patronized. We sat ourselves at a high top table near the bar. There was only a large group at the back of the dining room and a couple at another table top in the bar area. Not busy at all. Yet, no one came to greet us for at least 10 minutes. Our server ended up being the bartender and he seemed extremely annoyed by our presence. I attempted to ignore his attitude by being friendly (hoping it would help turn his attitude around). I asked him if he could make a specific drink and he shrugged his shoulders and said "I guess?" I the said "It's ok if you can't just say so!" And then he said "I'm sure I can!" And then walked away. As for the food, the chicken that came with the fried rice was extremely bland and tasted old. The sushi roll I ordered was a joke...it literally looked like slop on a plate (see picture). Although, it looked gross it had great flavor. Back to the server/bartender, he shared that he had been drinking and he was pissed because he was the only bartender for the day and scheduled to work the next day. He was belligerent and cursing AND taking shots with other patrons. Just horrible!!!! The front and back of the house needs revamping. I will not waste my time nor money returning. The steak was cooked almost to a char- it wasn't asked how I preferred it cooked- not sure if it was an option or not. The service took quite some time to come out too, which surprised me considering when I ordered everyone else had their meals or part of their meals too. Overall, this was not worth $25. I used the birthday coupon they send as well and that took quite some time. This weekend, a group of friends went out for my birthday and we felt that the quality has gone down hill quite noticeably while the costs went up quite a bit. The value was just not there or worth it. We always get the viva Las Vegas Roll $20 which is supposed to be deep fried, but did not see warm or freshly made. The ultimate shrimp tempura roll $17, tasted like it was made the day before and refrigerated. The breaded shrimp tasted soggy and not and the rice tasted stale and cold. The fish cut on top had dry edges that appear that it was not cut fresh. Tasted like it came from the grocery store. Our friends had the ponzu chili speciality roll and they kept commenting on how fishy and not fresh it tasted. The maki roll was good, however we do not pick out sushi places based on maki rolls. The restaurant was completely empty and we considered saying something to the server, but we just wanted to enjoy catching up with friends. $20 per roll for extremely poor sushi quality was very disappointing and I don't plan to come back unfortunately.
