Pizza is excellent if you like huge crust with lots of toppings. Staff is moderately friendly in a weird kinda way, but the restaurant's atmosphere needs reconfiguring. We arrived at around 7pm and had to wait. When we finally got our table it was so fricking noisy I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me...so noisy it hurt my ears. I had the beef stroganoff with pasta. I chose it because it said on the menu it's their most requested plate. It was mediocre there was something missing maybe the sour cream...I kept adding parmigiana to see it that would help, but no. Perhaps they are better known for pizza, but I don't care for pizza. The menu is three times the size of my head! I was like, "there must be a lot of food in here". I was so happy to see all the choices and quite frankly was overwhelmed. I was also starving so I felt as though I can eat everything on the menu. They have your all american burgers to your italian pizza to greek gyros. This place has it all and I'm sure they do it well. My bf got the artichoke pizza and my my my was it DELICIOUS. They put garlic butter or oil in the pizza or something because it was one hell of a bite. All the flavors were so mouth watering. The pizza wasn't a small size too and I got the gyro platter so we had tons of leftovers. My platter was delicious. I thought the gyro was super tasty and the tzatziki sauce was out of this world! My whole platter was so satisfying and it came with such huge portions that you can easily make two to three meals out of it. I got it with french fries of course! First off, I have to give a mention about the menu. The menu booklet is massive, it made me feel like an infant holding a regular size menu. Not only are the menus big but so are their portions. This place is very generous with their portions and there's only one style of eat here and its family style because you would be a savage if you can eat any one thing on your own. Now with this being said, I'll tell you what's good. Started with the calamari and fries, pretty standard steak cut fries with perfectly fried squids. This is a staple of how fries and calamari should be made, so this place did a great job. It does come with a side of tartar sauce. Entree #1 we got the spaghetti with 4 meatballs. Again this is just your all around spaghetti and almost tennis ball sized meatballs. For those who have never had good spaghetti and meatballs, this place makes them like how they should be made. Nicely seasoned and cheesed with the perfectly cooked spaghetti noodles. Nothing to hate about this. Entree #2 was their well known greek pizza (the number 2). The pizza has great toppings. Eat a slice felt like eating a thin slice pizza but the a deep dish style of topping minus the overwhelming sauce. A pizza slice that you have to eat with utensils. It was just fantastic. VIBE: This place felt very home like as if you were eating a home cooked meal at your parents. Restaurant itself is very spacey once you walk past the kitchen. Service: Pretty good except for when I was trying to pay for the meal. No one came by to take my card after giving me the bill. It's like they didn't my money ;) Overall a great experience, the only wow factor was the portion and how good everything was. Nothing bad to say. A friend and I were talking one day and she mentioned Rainbow Pizza and how they had one of the best Greek Salads around. I never realized it was THIS place, and I was in 100% agreement with her suggestion. My family and I came here to celebrate my brother's birthday. Much larger location than the front entrance portrays and very kid friendly as well. Aside from the MASSIVELY sized menu, Rainbow Pizza also provides you with MASSIVE portions of food. As a party of 5 adults and 2 kids, we shared 1 calamari app, 1 medium pizza, 1 salad/rice/steak/chicken/shrimp plate, and a shrimp and chicken kabob plate... Who knew that 4 items would have 5 adults and 2 kids leaving STUFFED! We didn't think we'd have anything leftover, but we had enough for a couple of us to bring to lunch the following day. Next up from the size of the food, the flavor with the food is 100% spot on. Tastes nothing shy of authentic (as per my standards) and again, the size speaks volumes. If you are craving for an authentic Greek cuisine, this is the right place, for the Italian selection I definitely would go somewhere else. When it comes to Italian restaurants or pizza places I can be very picky, I spent more than a year in South Italy, living with an Italian family of course, so I perfectly recognize what is Italian and what is Americanized italian. We were a group of 4 in the mood for Mediterranean and Italian food. As soon as I took a look at the menu we figured out that the Greek selection would have been much more authentic of the italian one. And the Greek food was very tasty and well prepared and presented. Obvs the kids got pizza, they have a huge pizza menu and lots of topping options! My husband got a pasta and I got a salad. We had a few issues here. The food was just not very good. The food takes a long time to come out even when the restaurant is mostly empty The quality of ingredients isn't there. The kids got a black olive pizza, and you guys, they put WHOLE olives on the pizza. Like you couldn't even see the cheese because the pizza was covered in massive whole olives. We went for the Greek pizza (hold the bell peppers do to my sensitivity). We got a large for two people. Most places I go to a large will get you two days worth of meals. There were ten slices in this large and I struggled to finish one slice. This pizza is dense or thick of just so loaded with toppings it was hard to consume one slice in total. The dough was amazing, and as mentioned the toppings were so dense that I got the impression it was chicago style although it wasn't. Woah... Portions are huge. We got mozzarella sticks and a small vegetarian pizza. We came super hungry on the recommendation of other reviewers. We ate most of the mozzarella sticks but only one slice of pizza each... We were so full. A bonus was that we burned some calories carrying the rest of the heavy pizza to the car :) The mozzarella sticks were flavorful but not very hot. I love family style dining specially if its family owned and operated... When we got in, our party of nine was seated right away. I was shocked when I saw a huge selection of Italian and Greek offerings and how big the menu was - literally! If you laid it flat it would take up almost half a table for two. I was torn between Greek and Italian but because sharing is caring, the big advantage of eating with a big family is that you don't have to sacrifice any of your food options - just tag team. We started off with a double order of fried Calamari and a half order of Greek Salad. The calamari was good and the greek salad even better. I couldn't believe the portions! After about ten minutes of perusing the menu I ordered the Veal Picatta - thin tender veal slices sautéed with green onions and capers in a lemon-wine butter sauce with rice pilaf and fresh garden vegetables for my two sides 13.99. The rest of the line up that soon followed included - NY Steak, Club Sandwich, Chicken Picatta, Fettuccine Alfredo, The Devil... Himself Pizza, Greek Combination Platter with Mussaka and the little ones shared an Open Face Gyro Plate. My veal picatta was nice, juicy tender and flavorful yummy! The lemon wine-butter sauce with capers took it to a whole new level. The sides just perfect (good broccoli)! As my fork traveled around the table everything was deliciously prepared! The devil... himself pizza was up to par in taste, flavor and satisfied my Scoville heat rating preference. Their Mussaka was the best I've had! Plenty of tables for eat-in and beautiful Greece murals on the walls had me craving for some homemade baklava. Kudos to our server who juggled at least five tables but never missed a beat. I am not sure why I haven't reviewed this place yet, because it's amazing. My boyfriend mentions wanting to go to Rainbow Pizza usually once every 2 weeks if I'm lucky, and I understand his cravings because the pizza here is unlike any other pizza I've had. One slice of this pizza probably weighs about a pound, they seriously load the toppings on that high! My favorite is the #2, the Greek American Pizza with Salami, Pepperoni, bell peppers, onions, fresh mushrooms, Italian Sausage, feta cheese, smocked bacon. Believe me, if you are into combo pizza's this one is worth a taste! I normally like the margarita style pizza, definitely less is more, but not with this monster. Their toppings are all high quality, especially their feta, which I absolutely love. Two slices of this behemoth should fill up any stomach. And when you get it fresh from the oven, the crust is still nice and crispy...mmm... Not a fan of pizza? Rainbow has got you covered. They offer a ton of different items that are equally appetizing. I have not eaten at Rainbow, but last evening the owner of Rainbow Stratos (excuse spelling mistake) made my evening. I was planning to make pizza at home and was on the way to buy the crappy frozen dough you get at the supermarket. I saw rainbow and walked in and asked 'can I just buy the dough'. The very pleasant and nice young lady replied with a smile 'we don't but let me ask Stratos" In walks this larger than life guy, loving life, living what he does, exuding 'love for the customer' and goes on to give me dough AND sauce....AND when I ask 'how much' ....I get a huge smile and bear grip handshake and ' no charge ' I'm stunned ...who does that anymore. I felt I'd been transported to a small Greek village where I was eating at home. Rainbow Pizza is a popular icon in San Mateo. Nestled in a little shopping center at the bottom of a hill, it's one of the few true restaurants in the neighborhood and does a good business. When I lived close by, it was convenient, but in all of my trips there I could never say that the food was outstanding. The owners are super sweet and the menu is an extensive mix of Greek/Italian, but the pizzas is always soggy or cold in the middle, the wine list is so-so and there's always a wait. The "Meat Lovers" pizza I found to be tastier than the Greek American. I've brought several more colleagues here since my initial visit, and my family, too! Everyone's loved it! I seriously don't want to exaggerate, but I don't know too many people who could go past two slices of this bad boy, in one sitting. To put things in perspective, an XXL "#2 Greek-American" pizza (minimum of: 5 lbs. of dough, 6 lbs. of mozzarella) is priced at $68.95... it's dubbed "the best pizza in the house," and it's popular. Yup, you read it right - a $70 pizza folks. Try it and you'll see what I mean. You'll be inclined to "want" to eat more because of the flavor, and really, what's better than some fresh, hot pizza dough!? But I challenge you to eat their personal "Mini" 8" pizza all by yourself! Good Americanized Greek/Mediterranean, but on the pricier side. The food here is good, though I won't say that it's quite worth the price. For convenience, it is good. The gyro platter is quite delicious, along with the hummus, the calamari and the fries. The salads are okay, if you like iceberg lettuce. I personally like darker greens, so the lettuce definitely cheapened the experience. Overall, rainbow pizza is a good option for big parties because there is a lot of variety. I've patronized the Crystal Springs shopping center for years, and had only eaten at Rainbow Pizza once several years ago. I didn't care for it much the first time (super heavy, rich food), and after all the rave reviews of Yelpers and friends, decided to give it another chance last night. Pluses - Friendly service. - One slice of pizza and I was full. - They gave us several coupons (including one to use on the spot). - We got takeout & paid with a credit card, and they crossed out the tip section on the bill, so we saved with our coupon and the ambiguity was gone (so we didn't feel the need to tip for takeout pizza). - Good quality, fresh ingredients (we had the Greek pizza, minus the Gyro meat, with the artichoke hearts instead, and the olives were some serious huge black olives, feta, tomatoes - it was one HEAVY pizza!). Minuses - Pizza so heavy that it falls apart and we had to eat it with a fork. - Not the healthiest cuisine. I would go again, when I'm in the mood for really rich meal. My friend Athena chose this restaurant for us to have dinner last week. While waiting for her, I stood outside (by the kitchen window) and watched as the guy was piling up the pizzas. I've never seen a huge pile of meats on a pie. It's obviously not a place to come when you're on a diet. We ordered... Chicken Florentine-tender and delicious Vegetarian ravioli with pesto sauce-delicious Tolma-pretty good I wanted Pinot Grigio but they only had Chablis. Not bad. Over all it was a good meal.
