    House Margarita Pitcher
    Sydney T.

My husband and I gave Ranchera Bar & Grill a try for the first time this evening, and overall, it was just okay. Right off the bat, the table we were seated at was wobbly and felt cramped, which made things a bit uncomfortable. It also seemed like we had two servers at the beginning, which was a little confusing, though I think one may have just been helping out. We did enjoy the house margarita pitcher--about three glasses each (six total)--and appreciated the generous portions across the board, from the salsa cups to the water glasses. The choriqueso was a standout: rich and flavorful, though a bit heavy on the chorizo for my taste. My husband ordered the Quesadilla Verde and wasn't too impressed--it didn't leave much of an impression. I had the taquitos, all chicken by choice (though you can mix with beef), and they were pretty solid. All in all, not a bad place if you're in the mood for Mexican food, but probably not one we'd add to our regular rotation--we've had better elsewhere.

    Now I'm holding a Paloma

I think reviewing Mexican restaurants has to be some of the hardest reviews to write. As comedian Jim Gaffigan says, every Mexican dish is "a tortilla with cheese, meat, or vegetables." But, oh, are the combinations delicious! The reason I think reviewing Mexican joints is so hard is because how do I compare a full sit-down experience complete with a spiral-bound menu with page after page of mouthwatering options with the little hole-in-the-wall taco dive? For the record, the little taco dive is almost always 5 stars! So, Ranchers receives 4 stars because it's good for what it is. The staff is friendly and your food comes out quickly. Does it compare to a 5-star taco dive with an older Latino gentleman standing behind a flat top grill who's been cooking the perfect tacos for 30 years? No. Nothing does. But I've enjoyed my dining experiences at Ranchera. I think my only drawback is that there is nothing to really make it stand out from similar eateries. If you handed me a plate of carnitas (one of my personal favorite dishes), could I distinguish it from El J's on Washington? Probably not. But I'd still demolish the little flavor-bundles of pork goodness, all the same! On this trip, I tried a Paloma. Some work friends were getting together for drinks, and The Google said a Paloma has less carbs than a margarita. For the record, I love citrus, but I loathe grapefruit. I just can't do it. So why did I choose to order a drink that has grapefruit soda as its mixer? I figured I could choke down anything with some tequila. Well, I was wrong (about the drink. Not about tequila!). This drink was phenomenal. I had two and I will be ordering them, again, in the future! And the Tajin! Oh, Tajin, how I love thee. Let me count the ways. I was enjoying my drink and licking the Tajin off the rim of my glass so much that a coworker blushed and laughed out loud. (She was several margs deep at that point! Ha) After some slight embarrassment, I finished the Tajin, though!

My family and I have come here several times and we always have a great experience. If something is wrong, they make it right, and everything always tastes delicious. Fast & efficient service every time. Their taquitos are sooo good! Highly recommend if you want to try something new.

    Camarones Especiales

Food was perfect. I had Camarones Especiales. I enjoyed it. I had to wait for a refill until the manager's table touch or I would give them 5 stars. The food deserves it and service improved greatly after the manager's visit. Definitely will go back and this item I will likely buy again.

They do indeed have a burrito section on their menu, but all of the burritos have sauce and cheese covering them, which effectively makes them enchiladas. I came for a burrito, but I left with what was essentially a plate of enchiladas. That's fine; I make do. My Burritos Michoacan were two tortillas filled with pork carnitas, and topped with green chili sauce and cheese. Rice and beans came on the side. It was tasty, but again, it was not a burrito. (Alright! I'm done belaboring this point. No burrito, no bueno. I'm sure you get it.) But, four stars because my meal came with complimentary chips and salsa, and the chips were outta sight. I liked using my chips to scoop up the rice and beans and carnitas. My meal was also big enough for two people to share. I ate my to-go meal in my car, which honestly, is the best place to eat a meal, especially a burrito-but-not-burrito meal. I bounced into Los Vaqueros soon after they opened at 11 a.m., and I was able to order my to-go food right there and then wait only about 10 minutes to receive it. There are some seats in the lobby that you can sit at while you wait. Parking can be a little iffy here. There is no designated parking lot, but there is street parking on the side of the restaurant. I wasn't able to find parking there, so I parked across the street.

The food is cooked and brought out often times on a skillet which is literally steaming as it reaches the table, which is an experience within itself that Mexican restaurants fail to reciprocate in the modern day. When you walk in, you may have some difficulty being seating as this restaurant is typically busy, and typically understaffed. The service is amazing, however. The owner and crew are all very amazing, friendly, hard workers. They converse well, they take care of each other and set up an amazing environment together. That being said, with Los Maguelles may consider hiring a few more servers for the bustling Saturday nights, you may find yourself waiting 10 minutes or longer if you don't speak up for a simple refill let alone be seated. They make it fun, with their "Burrito Tropical" earning the name "Best Burrito On The Menu" as it truly is and the staff is sure to remind you. Los Maguelles is a great experience, great eatery, and an excellent choice for lunch, but with current staffing levels I would avoid a dinner with a large group.

I kicked off the evening with the Black Margarita--a berry-flavored twist on the classic--which, unfortunately, reminded me more of cough syrup than a cocktail. As usual, we started with choriqueso, though this version was overwhelmingly queso with just a small amount of chorizo. My husband ordered the Quesabirria Tacos and enjoyed them, while I opted for the beer-battered shrimp tacos--admittedly a bold choice for someone who usually avoids seafood unless I'm near the coast. I'll be sticking to that rule from now on, especially after dealing with some stomach discomfort later that night. While the restaurant clearly has a strong reputation and many enticing options, our first visit didn't quite live up to the hype. Prices leaned toward the higher end, and oddly, a server who wasn't even assigned to our table ended up being more attentive than our actual one. That said, the restaurant was busy, and both food and drinks arrived in a timely manner. The ambiance gives off a more upscale, modern Mexican vibe, but personally, I'll always prefer the flavors and value of a traditional Mexican spot over something that feels overpriced and underwhelming.
