Ordered their menudo on a Sunday to go and was very impressed that not only was their small size a good portion but was also given 4 tortillas, chips and salsa and all the fixings for under $10! My dad was craving Mexican food but most places weren't doing takeout or to go orders but thankfully we found this little hole in the wall. Everything I ordered to go was delicious! I had a craving for Menudo. I thought it was Saturday when I asked if they had Menudo, but then later realized it was Friday. (retired, lose track of days...lol)Most places where I have lived (southern CA and Las Vegas, NV) only make it on the weekends. I was ordering for my mother and me. We ended up sharing the Menudo and also ordered the Grande combination(I think that's what it was called) It had a hard shell shredded beef taco, a cheese enchilada, a chili relleno, and a small side of rice and beans. The menudo was perfect. I like some Hominy in it and am disappointed when some make without, which I know is a preference for many. They don't overload the hominy, just enough to give people like me what they want. Probably makes it easy for others to say "No hominy" and they can serve it without. The broth wasn't greasy like some places, and the meat was perfect. I didn't have any fatty pieces of snot like meat, no bone with fat like some serve. It was exactly how I like Menudo. All the toppings and tortillas were all in the bag also. They even gave a small bag of chips and a side of salsa. All the food I named above was delicious! I It was a lot of food and I have lots of menudo leftover and we couldn't eat the taco. I tasted the meat though, to verify it was great tasting too! I have ordered from places and I will like everything, but maybe not the hot sauce/salsa, or I won't like the rice or beans. But this place, like I said, everything was delicious! This has been our go to restaurant for many years. My husband was a faithful of #11 for years. The salsa can vary in its heat, depending I think on who makes it. We have had it from mild to very warm. Free chips and salsa with meal. Soups are all very good. Posole tends to sell out. The waitresses are very kind, welcoming, and accommodating. Over the years my children have asked for variations on items and the cooks have always been able to make the changes. It is a great casual neighborhood place for dinner, they also do take out if you like, and can be quite busy some nights. read more

This is real Mexican food, and it's delicious! Rancho Viejo is small and the decor is standard Mexican restaurant crapola. The staff (owners?) are really nice though and the food is so good. Both the chips and the salsa are great (a rarity--usually restaurants either have good salsa or good chips, but never both!). The salsa is spicy and the chips are hot and salty. C got enchiladas and I got tacos. We both licked the plates clean. We'll definitely be coming back. read more

Just great food! Only this missing is Tequila,lol. They do have many beers tho. We had been looking for a New Mexican food place on the central coast for a while now and finally landed here. It is nothing fancy or kitschy. No chain restaurant here people, just small family owned and ran. It is consistently good. I've had many different things on their menu. Some of my favorites are; Diabla Shrimp, Chili Verde, Chilaquiles, albondigas soup just to name a few. They're happy to accommodate any request you may have to any dish. I also enjoy the people who work there who will treat you like family when you dine. Lucretia and Norma have been wonderful each and every time we have eaten at Ranch Viejo. They always ask after family that aren't there with you at that time. Just love those ladies and the personable reception that we are always met with that is always genuine. Don't let the fact that this little gem is located in a strip mall deter you from giving this great place a chance. it's delicious. read more

This is probably the best Mexican food in the Central Coast area! It was so fresh and tasted wonderful. We got there at 5:30 to beat the regular crowd that arrives at 6 pm and I'm glad we did. I had the #2 combination which was chicken enchilada and guacamole tostada and I loved it. My husband has been there before but this was my first time and I regret it took me so long to discover this jewel in the middle of a shopping center in Nipomo. We were with three friends who live in Santa Maria and they all agreed that this was one of the best Mexican meals they have had. read more

We have been frequenting this restaurant for over a year. The food is consistently good. The restaurant is small but very clean. The owner and servers are friendly, welcoming and accommodating. Our favorites are the Carnitas and Chile Verde. Most of the fat is removed from the pork and it is seasoned with the right amount of spice and heat. The Chile Rellenos are prepared light and cheezie. Pozole and Albondigas are souper! Breakfast especially on the weekends is excellent! If you like Mexican cuisine give Rancho Viejo a try! read more

Well, I must admit right off that I don't like to imagine that a restaurant is worthy of five stars. Surely something happens that has me making a sacrifice in taste or values, or in cleanliness, the friendliness of the staff... or finding a child has fingerpainted with salsa and cheese in my menu. So, I came back a second time to make sure this out-of-the-way Mexican food restaurant in a strip mall which has long ago shed any pretense of being the 'happening spot', was the real thing. Disclaimer: I'm not Mexican, but I really enjoy good Mexifood. And this is good. And consistent. And the chips are thin and warm, the salsa fresca is mild with a little kick, and the beers are brought out with mismatching mugs that have been in a freezer all day. Beans are savory, rice is good but a little reserved in flavor, and the meals I've enjoyed ( fish taco combo and the chile relleno/enchilalala combo, negra modelos ) were both five star-worthy. The staff here is GREAT!!! The food is always good and the prices can't be beat! Our family goes to R.V. often, very often.. The chips and salsa are some of the best around! We always eat way more than our share of chips and salsa here every time we go. The staff always have my little kids plates made just how my little ones want it.They never act like your table is asking for a lot and they are very friendly. I have 5 boys and they can eat a LOT. They are always full when we leave here and like the food also! They have a lot of things under $10. read more

Had better mexican food else where. But food was okay. When the nice lady served me the plate,the plate was super hot, that tells me they microwave it. I had the enchiladas verdes. Im used to enchiladas Mexican style like made from scratch. The flavor of the green sauce tasted like it was canned. ( i know ) lol. The reason i gave this place a 3 stars was because of the aguachiles. They are not in the menu so you will have to tell them to prepare it ahead of time before you go in. Now that was the bomb! My wife and I went here this past Friday. This is a good place, and the food is good. The service was very good, up until a few large family groups came in and they got rushed, but we had already eaten and the only issue was that it took a while for the check to arrive...no big deal. My wife had the enchiladas and found the sauce to be very spicy-hot (perfect for me), but otherwise very good. I had the Carne Azada burrito, of which there seem to be 2. One, on the 'blackboard', was 75 cents more than the one on the menu, justified by the fact that the pricier one had black beans, as opposed to the regular menu one that had pinto beans. It was quite good, regardless. This is the first of the local Mexican restaurants in Nipomo that we have tried since relocating here less than a month ago from "The Crush" (L.A./O.C. area), and it was pricier than I like for what is good, but not great Mexican food. I DO like their habanero hot sauce (you have to ask for it). With the fullness of time. after trying the other local Mexican places here in town, we will probably be back, as this place does warrant further visits. read more
